Thanos brought John to Vormir to seek the Soul Stone, while John challenged Thanos’s belief that eliminating poverty would create a harmonious universe. They encountered Red Skull, who revealed that obtaining the Soul Stone came at a steep price.
John confronted Thanos on Vormir after Red Skull revealed that obtaining the Soul Stone required sacrificing the person one loved most. John forced Thanos into a duel by threatening Gamora, and the battle began with Thanos overpowering John's magic as John silently counted down.
John defeated Thanos on Vormir by revealing that he had secretly replaced the Power Stone with a poisonous counterfeit and had been luring Thanos into using it. After Thanos fell into the abyss, John turned to Red Skull and called him Grindelwald.
John confronted Red Skull on Vormir and learned that the Soul Stone’s curse protected him, then left without taking the stone. With John and the other heroes stranded on Titan after Thanos abducted him, Tony and Ivan began planning a search for a way home while Harry led wizards in helping police fight crime on Earth.
John left Titan with the Space Stone and told the Collector and Grandmaster that Thanos could never obtain the Soul Stone, while learning that Earth’s growing population could trigger a Celestial’s birth. After a month-long journey, the stranded heroes returned to Earth and found John waiting at the Avengers Compound.
After the battle, John explained that Thanos had taken the Infinity Stones, while the surviving heroes and allies prepared to return to their duties. Thaddeus Ross pressed John for the stones, and the chapter ended with human greed beginning to stir around their power.
Stephen learned that wizards and other allies had helped contain threats while the superheroes were away, while Watson defended his role in keeping the underworld orderly despite Mycroft urging him to retire. Back in the Wizarding Kingdom, John investigated hidden dimensional threats, tested the Infinity Stones against his body’s limits, and realized the world was nearing the population threshold for a Celestial’s birth.
John sent Gilgamesh and Thena to investigate the Eternals’ former worlds, hoping they would uncover the truth about their mission and Thena’s strange memories. After Thena confronted John over his knowledge, she and Gilgamesh departed aboard his spaceship while Ikaris watched them leave.
John planned to use Stormbreaker to cut open a Celestial Seed and investigate its weaknesses. Meanwhile, Thor reunited with Frigga, helped Odyssey think about ruling, and departed with his family to rebuild Asgard, while Tos earned a new name and chose the Twin Blades.
Thor asked John to secure land and legal status for the Asgardians in Norway, and John negotiated their settlement in exchange for borrowing Stormbreaker. John then used the axe to break open the Celestial Seed and began analyzing the Celestial life-form inside, leaving Silver Hand Manor overrun by chaotic growth.
John sent newly mutated plants to Professor Sprout for study while the Potions Department found they could improve potion-making. Deviants reappeared around the world, and John and Wenwu investigated their connection to the ten rings as Wenwu considered reconnecting with his children.
Deviants reappeared around the world, and Dax rescued Robert and an injured woman from one in New York. After the Avengers and the Superhero Oversight and Management Authority discussed the ancient threat, the global crisis remained unresolved.
Thena told Gilgamesh that the Celestials used the Eternals to guard worlds until they could harvest the life there to birth new Celestials. As the Silver Hand 2017 returned to Earth, the pair resolved to contact the other Eternals, but learned that Ajak was dead.
Dane asked Sersi to move in with him, but she refused because she feared the pain of outliving him. When a Deviant attacked the Eternals, Ikaris intervened, and John marked the creature before realizing he had been discovered.
John met Sersi and the other Eternals after helping conceal them from the police, then experimented with Celestial Genes on plants at Silver Hand Manor. His test created Deviants capable of absorbing his blood, and Thor arrived with Frigga to retrieve Stormbreaker as smoke drifted from the manor.
John learned that Odin had forged the Destroyer Armor to defend against the Celestials and considered how to strengthen himself against them. Meanwhile, the Eternals regrouped after Ajak’s death and discovered that a wizard had cured Thena.
The Eternals learned that a Celestial was gestating beneath Earth and would destroy the world when it emerged, while Sersi contacted Arishem to hear the truth. John prepared to stop the coming destruction before Hagrid’s wedding, but absorbing celestial genes failed to break his personal limits.
John offered to help New Asgard build an economy by exporting its artisans’ handcrafted goods, but a worldwide earthquake signaled the coming birth of a Celestial. As the Eternals prepared to stop the Emergence, John tracked a Deviant to the Amazon Rainforest, where the creature was approaching Druig’s tribe.
The Eternals fought a powerful Deviant leader who drained Ikaris and nearly killed Thena, but John saved Thena with his golden blood. After the battle, John asked the Eternals to work with him and offered them a deal, leaving Sersi identified as their new leader.
John negotiated with the Eternals to help stop the Emergence, which was due within seven days, and asked for Sersi’s sphere so he could study Celestial technology. As the Eternals went to recruit Phastos in Chicago, John challenged Sprite to consider whether she would give up immortality to live a mortal life.
The Eternals tried to stop Tiamut’s emergence, but Ikaris betrayed them and killed Druig, shattering their plan. As Tiamut began to rise, John revealed he was changing Kamar-Taj’s protective magic to capture the Celestial, and prepared to act.
John trapped the emerging Celestial Tiamut in Kamar-Taj’s reversed barrier and used the Reversal Equation to weaken him. With the world’s dimensional defenses compromised, John had twenty-four hours to deal with Tiamut, who awakened enough to ask him why.
John confronted Tiamut, who revealed that he had entered John's life as the system and grown alongside him. John rejected Tiamut's claim that he had created the Wizard King and destroyed him, leaving Tiamut's power to pass through his body without finding any trace of his former influence.
Demons and other dimensional monsters poured into the world after Kamar-Taj’s barrier vanished, but coordinated forces turned the invasion into a deadly trap. After John destroyed Tiamut and freed Ikaris, Arishem appeared to confront him.
Arishem took the Eternals from Earth, but John claimed the right to be recognized as a Celestial and persuaded Arishem to spare them from judgment over their failed mission. Arishem still summoned John to face Eternity’s judgment and returned the Eternals to the World Forge, while John’s allies gathered to demand answers.
