Background / History
Joker rose from a penniless nobody to the uncrowned king of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Without wealth, established influence, superpowers, or physical abilities comparable to Batman’s, he built his position through chaotic violence and a formidable capacity to manipulate others 17.
He is among the dangerous criminals confined at Arkham Asylum. His repeated confrontations with Batman have made him the Dark Knight’s most troublesome opponent, despite Gotham’s many superpowered villains 16 17.
His case file records neither his birth nor his age and describes him as a compulsive liar. It warns anyone who encounters him not to believe his statements, to notify Batman immediately, and to retreat to safety 56.
Among his most consequential crimes are the torture and murder of the second Robin, Jason Todd, and the attack that shattered Barbara Gordon’s spine. Both were intended to break Batman through the suffering of people close to him rather than through a direct victory in combat 78 373.
He later acquires Dionesium, which greatly enhances his regeneration without improving his other physical attributes. This makes repeated physical punishment an ineffective means of keeping him subdued and motivates the younger Batfamily members to attack his influence and psychological vulnerabilities instead 111 160.
Appearance
Joker is tall and lanky, with a deathly pale face and an exaggerated grin 27.
- Hair: Fluorescent green, visible beneath the blonde wig worn during his television broadcast 27.
- Eyes: Green, surrounded by black rings 27.
- Mouth: Blazing red lips extending toward his ears; he later pulls at the already split corners of his mouth to exaggerate his smile 27 35.
- Broadcast costume: An ill-fitting blue skirt suit falling below his knees and a long, curly blonde wig. He adopts a higher, softer voice while retaining rough, masculine movements 27.
- Signature clothing: A formal purple-and-green ensemble with white gloves, a fluorescent-green shirt, purple tailcoat, and striped tie. His case-file photograph also depicts him in a bright purple suit 56 133.
- Arkham clothing: An orange-red prison uniform. During Miaomiao and Damian’s visit, his tangled green hair clings to his pale cheeks 161.
- Christmas broadcast: His pale face and scarlet grin are presented with greasepaint, accompanied by his characteristic purple-and-green suit and green tie 260.
Personality
Joker treats suffering, explosions, and mortal danger as entertainment. Pain is merely “seasoning” for an otherwise boring life, and neither his own death nor the deaths of others frighten him. He remains amused even while Batman beats him and breaks his bones 33 34.
His central obsession is proving that “one bad day” can turn a rational person into a madman. He targets weaknesses in human nature to make people abandon their principles or kill one another, with Batman as his preferred subject. He insists that he and Batman are two sides of the same coin, interpreting Batman’s restraint as concealment of a shared nature 34.
His playful manner masks calculated cruelty. He uses affectionate nicknames, singsong taunts, and apparently innocent requests while constructing situations intended to destroy Batman’s moral standing. His composure breaks when Miaomiao reveals that she has rescued the hostages he believed impossible to find 33 34 35.
He also craves an audience. Miaomiao, Tim, and Damian identify his need to be noticed and remembered as a vulnerability: his crimes routinely include publicity, theatrical staging, and recognizable symbols. His violence leaves Gotham’s residents afraid not only of him, but also of ordinary laughter, balloons, clown performances, and jack-in-the-boxes 112 133.
His unpredictability extends to his accomplices. He can cooperate cheerfully with someone and then kill them without warning, and he routinely treats his followers as expendable cannon fodder 111 133. During his Christmas livestream, he praises a frightened employee for obeying him before striking the man unconscious with a crowbar and pretending that he merely wanted to help him relax 260.
Despite his madness, Joker remains observant and capable of deliberate analysis. When he cannot immediately overcome Miaomiao’s magic, he calms himself and studies the situation. He hates being forced into another person’s game, and the prospect of being forgotten produces fear that physical injury does not 162.
His apparent tenderness toward Harley is a means of control rather than an equal partnership. When she challenges him, he alternates between professions of love, denial of his abuse, insults, and threats. His rage at her claim to have killed Batman reveals that preserving his own contest with Batman matters more to him than her devotion 281 282 283.
Power Progression
| Stage / Development | Abilities and Limits | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Original human capabilities | Has no innate superpowers. Builds his criminal standing through manipulation, chaos, and technical knowledge rather than exceptional strength or Batman-level combat ability. | 17 56 111 |
| Acquisition of Dionesium | Later obtains exceptionally strong healing. The acquisition’s exact date is not specified, and his other physical attributes remain unenhanced. | 111 160 |
| Regeneration clarified | Gunshot wounds, broken bones, disfigurement, and even injuries described as killing him can heal rapidly. Tim explains that more severe and frequent injuries theoretically strengthen and accelerate Dionesium’s effects; instant recovery from every injury is a potential consequence of repeated punishment, not a confirmed advancement. | 160 |
Abilities & Skills
Psychological Manipulation
Joker’s greatest advantage is his ability to influence and destabilize people, rather than supernatural power 17.
- Corrupts Harleen Quinzel, an Arkham criminal psychology consultant who initially intended to treat him, into the obsessively devoted Harley Quinn 34.
- Provokes Batman by recalling the fatal torture of his “baby red bird,” briefly bringing him close to strangling Joker before he regains control 33.
- Constructs forced-choice scenarios in which saving one group appears to require abandoning another, threatening Batman’s public credibility and cooperation with the police 33.
- Fails to make Batman violate his no-kill principle during the television-station confrontation 33.
- Uses verbal provocation, exploitation of human weaknesses, and physical coercion to draw people into his traps, willingly or otherwise 56.
- Repeatedly turns Arkham guards and treating psychiatrists into accomplices through words alone. His isolation arrangements eventually eliminate personnel assigned directly to his room, with meals delivered by machine 161.
- Subjects Harleen to repeated electric shocks and brainwashing after she permits him to restrain her on an operating table 269.
- Leaves a deeply rooted psychological imprint in Harley that can perpetuate his preferred behavior without a new instruction from him. Batman explains that holidays or emotional emptiness can prompt her to act according to what she believes Joker would want 251 254.
- Inspires followers through rhetoric presenting rules and morality as oppression and chaos as freedom, rebirth, and release 134.
Criminal Planning and Hostage Traps
Joker coordinates simultaneous attacks to isolate Batman and prevent his allies from reaching him 28 33 34.
- Sets a ten-minute deadline while other incidents draw Robin and Red Robin away 27 33.
- Uses accomplices to occupy Robin, Red Robin, and Red Hood while Batman confronts him 34.
- Fits hostages with linked bomb collars that detonate if the victims move more than a meter apart or one collar is removed and disabled 32.
- Conceals bound, weighted hostages underwater in sealed tanks with only half an hour of oxygen. The water reduces their temperature difference from their surroundings, defeating thermal-imaging searches 35.
- Does not anticipate Miaomiao’s water-based abilities, which allow her to locate the submerged hostages and neutralize the bombs 35.
- Designs Jason Todd’s fatal trap around genuine information about his birth mother, then uses her pleas and his threats to make Jason surrender his equipment. He calculates Batman’s arrival time and detonates the warehouse just before Batman can intervene 77 78.
- Uses a double disguised as himself in his Arkham room to distract Batman while he attacks the Gordon family 373.
- During the Christmas amusement-park confrontation, combines an accelerated Ferris wheel, hostage-linked explosive triggers, decoy bomb sites, and uncertainty over which three buttons activate real explosives 261 262.
- The Christmas breakout is described as destroying Arkham’s core security system, compromising surveillance, and disabling electronic locks, allowing other villains and their remaining followers to exploit the resulting disorder 262.
Resilience and Combat
Joker has no stated innate superpowers, and his strength and fighting skills are unexceptional compared with Batman’s. Nevertheless, he displays remarkable recovery and tolerance for injury 17 33 111.
- Quickly recovers from an electrical attack strong enough to incapacitate a burly adult 33.
- Continues speaking and taunting Batman despite heavy blows, bleeding, and broken bones 33.
- Exploits a momentary distraction to strike Batman with a club 33.
- Is ultimately knocked unconscious by Batman once the hostages are safe 35.
- His case file credits him with considerable hand-to-hand combat ability. Tim nevertheless judges his fighting skills below his own and his marksmanship merely decent, far below Deadshot’s 56 111.
- Dionesium enables rapid recovery from gunshot wounds, fractures, disfigurement, and even apparently fatal injuries. It does not grant corresponding increases in strength, speed, or other abilities 160.
- Can read lips and communicate through gestures, which he considers possible alternatives when Miaomiao’s illusion initially deprives him of sound 162.
Scientific Knowledge and Weapon Manufacture
Joker possesses extensive knowledge of physics and chemistry and can independently manufacture powerful bombs 56.
- Develops Joker Venom, a poison gas that makes victims laugh uncontrollably until they die 56.
- Tim identifies Joker Venom as his greatest chemical research achievement but notes that timely administration of an antidote can treat its effects 111.
- Disguises weapons as entertaining toys and novelties, including balloons, dolls, fake marbles, cigar bombs, and jack-in-the-boxes 56.
- Within Miaomiao’s isolation illusion, collects available materials and assembles improvised destructive devices while moving through the apparently empty asylum 162.
Publicity and Gang Influence
Joker deliberately reinforces his identity through recurring visual signatures and public performances 133.
- Announces crimes through purple-and-green notices bearing smiley faces, messages carved into a clock tower, newspaper offices, and hijacked live broadcasts 133.
- Uses purple and green, grinning faces, clown props, and the Jester King playing-card emblem as recognizable signatures 133.
- Leaves giant smiling graffiti after explosions and grinning corpses after poisonings, encouraging the public to associate these images with him 133.
- Although he considers building a gang beneath him, attracts fanatical admirers and brainwashed citizens whom he ignores until he needs them 133.
- His followers imitate his crimes, spread graffiti, wear clown makeup and purple-and-green clothing, and answer his calls despite his habit of killing them after they have served their purpose 133.
- Joker Gang gatherings distribute masks and posters and replay recordings of his crimes and speeches as instruments of indoctrination 134.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
- Fear of being forgotten: The Batfamily children identify his dependence on public attention as a vulnerability. Miaomiao’s illusion confirms that an empty world without Batman, police, civilians, or any audience frightens him 112 133 162.
- Susceptibility to merfolk illusion: Covering his ears does not stop Miaomiao’s song, which seems to sound directly inside his head. His attempts to shout or strike his cell fail to produce audible results within the illusion 162.
- Resistance is not immunity: His chaotic mind makes ordinary hypnosis difficult, but he cannot control his movements once Harley takes command of the illusion in which she confronts him 283.
- Dependence on resources and followers: Dismantling his hideouts and stockpiles limits what he can organize after escaping. In the Christmas confrontation, his depleted resources restrict him to three actual explosive sites, supplemented by decoys and psychological pressure 262.
- Physical punishment is counterproductive: Pain does not deter him, and repeated injury may stimulate stronger Dionesium regeneration. The children therefore choose confinement through dreams rather than repeated beatings 111 160.
- Loss of conditioned followers: Miaomiao’s recorded singing helps Joker Gang members recover their sense of individuality. Some subsequently leave the gang or surrender to police and provide information about hidden bases 136 160.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Club — Used against Batman during their fight inside Gotham Television Station 33.
- Explosives — Planted at multiple locations; Tim initially detects four bomb sites but cannot rule out additional devices 28.
- Remote-controlled bomb collars — Leather collars fitted with compact explosive devices and red indicator lights; their linked triggers obstruct conventional rescue attempts 32.
- Underwater hostage apparatus — Weights, oxygen masks, and tightly sealed water tanks used to conceal victims from Batman’s equipment 35.
- Joker Venom — His independently developed lethal laughing gas, also associated with weaponized balloons and other clown-themed traps 56 133 254.
- Disguised novelty weapons — Balloons, dolls, fake marbles, cigar bombs, and jack-in-the-boxes conceal dangerous mechanisms 56.
- Rusty crowbar — The instrument used to torture Jason Todd; a rusty crowbar is also used against the employee preparing his Christmas livestream 78 260.
- Firearms — Joker possesses shooting skills; Harley recalls him shooting the gangsters who surrounded her on a rainy night 111 278.
- Christmas detonator and Ferris-wheel apparatus — A remote trigger and hostage arrangement intended to force Batman to risk explosions when rescuing individual victims 261 262.
- Livestreaming equipment — Installed under coercion by a frightened employee to broadcast his amusement-park performance across Gotham 260.
- “J” necklace — A black metal necklace bearing a capital “J,” given to Harley and treasured by her as a token of their supposed love 270.
Relationships
- Batman / Bruce Wayne — Principal adversary and the focus of Joker’s obsession. Joker calls himself Batman’s “archenemy” and “other half,” repeatedly attempting to make him kill or abandon innocent people 33 34. Jason’s murder nearly succeeds in provoking Batman to kill him, but Superman intervenes 78 92. Joker also undermines Bruce’s planned marriage to Catwoman by planting doubts in both partners 175.
- Harley Quinn / Harleen Quinzel — Former clinician turned devoted accomplice. She helps him escape Arkham and fights Robin during the television-station operation; news of Joker’s capture leaves her vulnerable to defeat 34 35. Joker repeatedly uses, beats, abandons, and conditions her, treating her as a tool rather than an equal partner 251 254. With help from Miaomiao, Pamela, and Selina, Harley finally recognizes his manipulation, ends their relationship within an illusion, and wakes free of his mental imprint 283 284.
- Miaomiao / Quan Ke — Unexpected opponent who dismantles his hostage scheme. He mocks her as a possible new Batgirl before discovering that she has already rescued his victims 34 35. She later studies his methods, helps organize the Joker Forgetting Plan, and uses Illusion Song to trap him in a world where nobody acknowledges him 83 133 162 165. Her illusion also enables Harley to confront and overcome his hold over her 283 284.
- Poison Ivy / Pamela Isley — Temporary escape partner. She accepts his breakout plan to leave Arkham but dismisses his Batman obsession and heads toward the Botanical Garden instead 29. She later condemns his abuse of Harley, repeatedly tries to stop Harley from returning to him, and helps her escape his psychological control 58 82 251 284.
- Killer Croc and Clayface — Temporary allies who jointly prevent Red Hood from reaching Batman during Joker’s operation 34 46.
- Scarecrow and Mad Hatter — Fellow criminals whose attacks help keep Batman’s allies occupied during the hostage crisis 34.
- Jason Todd / Red Hood — Joker’s murder victim and later an enemy seeking revenge. As a young Robin, Jason first helps rescue Batman from a Joker trap; Joker subsequently tortures him with a crowbar and kills him in the warehouse explosion 77 78. After resurrection, Jason’s anger at Joker and Batman’s refusal to kill him contributes to his becoming Red Hood 78 90. Jason eventually joins the younger children’s effort to erase Joker’s influence and offers to cover for their unauthorized actions 165.
- Tim Drake / Red Robin and Damian Wayne / Robin — Work with Miaomiao to identify Joker’s fear of being forgotten, disrupt his followers, suppress his publicity, and keep him confined. Damian accompanies Miaomiao into Arkham while Tim supports them by hacking surveillance 111 112 133 160 162.
- Dick Grayson / Nightwing — Agrees to keep the children’s anti-Joker plan secret from Bruce and participates in restoring sites associated with Joker’s terror 134 173 191.
- Barbara Gordon / Batgirl / Oracle — Joker shoots her and shatters her spine as part of his attempt to break Batman and Commissioner Gordon. The injury ends her active Batgirl career and leads to her work as Oracle; Miaomiao’s Pearl and spiritual power eventually restore her ability to stand 373.
- James Gordon — Abducted and subjected to degrading abuse in Joker’s effort to prove that one terrible day can destroy a person’s principles. Gordon refuses to cross that final moral line and is rescued 373.
- Superman / Clark Kent — Stops Batman from killing Joker in the aftermath of Jason’s death 92.
- Catwoman / Selina Kyle — Joker’s interference contributes to her departure on the eve of her planned wedding to Bruce. She later helps Harley break free of his mental imprint 175 284.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Gotham Television Station Attack
- Arkham breakout: Joker gathers several villains for a coordinated escape, intending to give Batman a “grand present” 29.
- Televised ultimatum: He seizes Gotham Television Station and demands Batman’s arrival within ten minutes, threatening to kill one hostage for every minute of delay 27.
- Forced choice: During their fight, Joker claims to have divided the station’s occupants into three groups. Believing one group has already died, he demands that Batman choose between the wealthy people controlling the station and its employees 33.
- Interrupted confrontation: With Batman’s allies pinned down elsewhere, Miaomiao arrives. Joker resents the interruption and renews his demand that Batman decide who will die 34.
- Defeat: Miaomiao reveals that every hostage has been rescued and the bombs rendered harmless. Batman knocks Joker unconscious and personally returns him to Arkham 35.
Jason Todd’s Murder and Its Aftermath
- Earlier defeat: Jason’s intervention while wearing the Robin uniform helps Batman escape a Joker trap and demonstrates his readiness to become the second Robin 77.
- Warehouse trap: Joker exploits Jason’s search for his birth mother, Sheila Haywood. Faced with threats against her and her pleas, Jason gives up his equipment 77 78.
- Torture and murder: Joker deliberately targets Jason’s bones with a rusty crowbar, avoiding immediately fatal blows to prolong his suffering. He then detonates the warehouse moments before Batman can save him; Jason dies trying to protect Sheila 78.
- Batman’s retaliation: Bruce attacks Joker with fists and a firearm, abandons his usual restraints, and nearly snaps his neck. Superman prevents the killing 92.
- Continuing consequences: The resurrected Jason becomes Red Hood and seeks revenge against Joker, while Batman’s continued refusal to kill his murderer becomes a central source of conflict between father and son 78 90.
Attack on the Gordon Family
- Deception: Joker leaves a disguised double in his Arkham room and takes his men to the Gordon home 373.
- Barbara’s injury: He shoots Barbara at the waist, shattering her spine and taking away her ability to walk 373.
- Commissioner Gordon’s ordeal: He abducts and degrades James Gordon, attempting to destroy the father and daughter psychologically and thereby provoke Batman into becoming another Joker 373.
- Failure of his thesis: Both Gordons and Batman retain their principles. Gordon is rescued, and Joker is returned to Arkham 373.
- Lasting harm and eventual recovery: Barbara suffers severe trauma and is initially told that her spinal damage is irreversible. Much later, Miaomiao’s Pearl and spiritual power repair her nerves and bones, allowing her to stand again 373.
Joker Forgetting Plan
- Identifying the weakness: Miaomiao, Tim, and Damian conclude that Joker’s need for attention makes being forgotten a more effective threat than pain or death 112 133.
- Suppressing publicity: Tim creates software that filters or replaces Joker-related online information. Ordinary searches are redirected or obscured, while the Batcave and police databases retain relatively complete records 134 160.
- Infiltrating the gang: Tim supplies false identities and compromises the gang’s verification system so that Miaomiao and Damian can attend a gathering at an abandoned amusement park. They investigate its coercive recruitment and indoctrination methods and take down the meeting site 134 135 136.
- Breaking indoctrination: Miaomiao distributes recorded singing that gradually weakens followers’ fixation on Joker and restores their sense of self. Some abandon the gang or surrender with information that helps expose hidden bases 136 160.
- Removing physical traces: Damian works against Joker’s real-world marks and infrastructure. The children dismantle hideouts, clear explosion damage, and remove reminders of his crimes 160 181.
- Restoring public spaces: The family acquires the abandoned amusement park and Ace Chemical Plant. Rather than treating all clown and amusement-park imagery as inherently evil, Dick advocates renovations that can make such places joyful again 173 191.
- Bruce learns the truth: Miaomiao and the Bat-kids reveal their secret work to Bruce. He recognizes their aim of freeing Gotham from Joker’s shadow and feels proud of what they have accomplished 181 191.
Illusion Confinement at Arkham
- Choosing a nonlethal method: Tim explains that repeated injuries could strengthen Joker’s Dionesium regeneration. Miaomiao chooses to use a dream rather than physical harm, honoring her promise to Bruce not to kill 160 165.
- Infiltration: Miaomiao and Damian reach Joker’s room in Arkham’s high-risk isolation ward while Tim temporarily controls surveillance. Joker recognizes them and correctly guesses that Batman does not know about their visit 160 161 162.
- The “gift”: Miaomiao introduces pearl mist and sings. Joker cannot block the song by covering his ears, and his attempts to shout or pound on the glass appear soundless 162.
- An audience-less world: Within the illusion, days pass without food deliveries, guards, or neighboring inmates. He seemingly escapes and causes destruction, only to discover that Batman, Gordon, the police, and frightened civilians are absent as well 162.
- Fear exposed: The apparent erasure of his existence terrifies him, directly targeting his refusal to be forgotten 162.
- Jason joins: Jason learns what the children have done, identifies the security mistakes that will expose them to Batman, and offers to help and cover for them 165.
Christmas Conditioning and Amusement-Park Confrontation
- Persistent influence: Although Joker is believed to remain asleep in Arkham under Miaomiao’s singing, Harley becomes determined to find him. Batman concludes that his old conditioning can drive her to reproduce his Christmas chaos without fresh instructions 251 254.
- Illusion investigation: While trying to help Harley, Bruce asks Miaomiao to construct an illusion for him, despite the risks posed by his strong mental defenses 259.
- Reported escape and broadcast: In the ensuing amusement-park confrontation, Joker broadcasts gagged hostages tied to the outside of Ferris-wheel gondolas. He demands Batman’s arrival within ten minutes, forbids assistance, and threatens random hostage deaths 260.
- Violence against an obedient captive: He strikes the employee who prepared the broadcast with a rusty crowbar immediately after praising him 260.
- Rigged choices: Joker resets his countdown and accelerates the wheel. He claims that saving particular hostages will trigger corresponding explosives, but only three buttons connect to real bombs, and he does not know which three 261.
- Depleted resources: Batman recognizes that Joker cannot have prepared citywide devastation so soon after escape. The children’s dismantling of his resources has forced him to rely on three actual explosive sites and numerous decoys 261 262.
- Wider chaos: Reports describe an Arkham security collapse and simultaneous breakouts while the hostage crisis keeps Batman occupied. Batman finally challenges the figure before him by declaring, “You’re not the Joker” 262.
Harley Quinn’s Break with Joker
- Abandonment exposed: Pamela tells Harley that Joker escaped without coming to find or contact her. Harley initially rejects the implication that he has discarded her 270.
- Reviewing her attachment: Within Miaomiao’s illusion, Harley revisits her first encounter with him, her chemical-vat memory, and the excitement she associated with life at his side. Her remembered romantic version of the vat incident is questioned rather than established as an objective account 270 274 279.
- Confrontation: Harley faces Joker in an illusion resembling his Arkham room and confronts him about using her against police, abandoning her at an explosion, and attempting to kill her with a rocket 281.
- His obsession laid bare: Her claim that she killed Batman prompts disbelief and then furious abuse. Joker accuses her of destroying his fun and plans, revealing how little her supposed achievement matters beside his own fixation 282 283.
- Manipulation fails: Joker recognizes the illusion and resumes false declarations of love, but Harley remains unmoved. She identifies his treatment as emotional control and psychological coercion and declares their relationship permanently over 283.
- Harley takes control: She transforms the illusion into the Ace Chemical Plant and compels him to walk toward the chemical vat, declaring that she will become Gotham’s one and only new king of crime. His involuntary movement occurs within the illusion, not as an established physical fall into chemicals 283.
- Aftermath: Harley wakes beside Pamela free of Joker’s mental imprint and learns that Miaomiao, Pamela, and Selina helped her. Miaomiao returns home exhausted by the effort 284.
Appearance in Dick’s Vampire Dream
In Dick’s account of a vampire-related dream, a playing card bearing blood-red graffiti over Joker’s face is interpreted by Bruce as a diversion intended to make others suspect Joker of being the new Vampire King. This is dream evidence and does not establish that the actual Joker became a vampire 427.
