Background / History
Damian is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, and the grandson of Ra’s al Ghul. Bruce’s relationship with Talia ended after he rejected the League of Assassins’ plan to eliminate evil through killing, including destroying crime-ridden cities such as Gotham. Bruce and Damian remained unaware of each other until Damian was ten 18.
The League’s prophecy identified Damian as the “Demon’s Head,” and Talia and Ra’s prepared him to become their perfect heir from before his birth. His upbringing combined exceptionally brutal combat training with intensive private education. By ten, he could defeat Talia; she then sent him to Gotham, believing Batman’s guidance would further perfect him 19 39.
His development included biochemical accelerated maturation in a laboratory. At four, he crossed snowy mountains and continued training with a broken arm; at six, he could breach the North American Department of Defense’s firewall; at eight, he could use a Tang sword to cut down groups of League ninjas and assassins. Talia and Ra’s also arranged unpredictable assassination attempts, including attacks during his sleep, in which failure to defend himself could mean actual death 67 87 155 452.
While still known as Damian al Ghul, he entered ruins to steal the king of Bialya’s scepter as proof of his worth to Talia and the League. He killed several generations of its Dragon Bat guardians, but spared the last young survivor after it approached and licked his nose. He adopted the creature, named it Goliath, and vowed to raise it into the most powerful Dragon Bat 55.
Damian initially attacked his father and older brothers and treated violence as the solution to almost every problem. After roughly a year under the family’s guidance, he earned their approval and became Robin. Although his arrogance and aggression persisted, he stopped responding to minor disagreements with lethal force and adopted Batman’s no-kill rule. His ambition is to inherit Batman’s cape 19 26.
His earliest attacks were genuinely lethal: he slashed Dick more than a dozen times and nearly killed Tim while trying to claim the position of Batman’s partner. Bruce initially wanted him to live as an ordinary child rather than become Robin, but guiding him away from the League’s worldview ultimately also led him toward the role 78 79 87 209 432.
Appearance
- Black hair and green eyes: His features closely resemble Bruce’s, making him look like a miniature version of his father when they wear formal clothes 19 41.
- Small stature: At 137 cm, he remains the shortest family member, even after Miaomiao transforms her tail into legs 36.
- Robin uniform: His vigilante costume includes bright yellow and green, contrasting with the Bat Family’s predominantly black and dark-red outfits 31.
- Civilian clothing: He wears a small suit for his shopping trip with Miaomiao 41.
- Conditioned physique: His arms are considerably more muscular than expected for his age, despite his small frame and 38 kg body weight 156 157.
- Diving clothing: Wears a full diving suit when checking on Miaomiao during the Christmas Eve operation 241.
Personality
Damian is proud, impatient, quick-tempered, and openly contemptuous of people he considers foolish. He trades insults with his brothers, resents unwanted nicknames and physical teasing, and dismisses elementary schoolwork as beneath his intelligence. His League upbringing left him with little empathy or respect for ordinary people, though Batman’s guidance has substantially restrained his violent behavior 15 19 39 47.
His patience with animals sharply contrasts with his treatment of people: he personally handles their feeding, exercise, and cleaning. Miaomiao also draws out a gentler side. Despite complaining about looking after her, he waits while she learns to dress, ties her shoelaces, and protects her during a gunfight. He enjoys her mischievous response to threats, but rejects the idea that fate should dictate someone’s death 16 25 41 44.
His aloofness conceals insecurity about whether he is genuinely wanted. When comparing himself with Jon Kent, he privately views Jon as a child born from love and himself as an artificially matured product of deception and ambition. He fears that Bruce and his brothers initially accepted him only from an obligation to their shared blood. He also recognizes that classmates and young heroes avoid or fear his aggression, sarcasm, and history of killing 153 155.
Damian has difficulty responding to sincere affection. Martha Kent’s uncomplicated concern leaves him wanting to flee, and Miaomiao’s direct question about whether he likes her makes him blush, stammer, and deny it; she identifies the denial as a lie. He similarly becomes embarrassed when Bruce reassures him that he does not have to bear every burden alone 80 150 452.
His pride includes a strong sense of responsibility toward promises he has made. Although initially unwilling to accept Jon’s help with Bat-Cow, he eventually agrees to learn because he has sworn to handle her care himself. His determination persists through repeated failed attempts 141 156.
A visit to Kent Farm reveals a more ordinary childish side. After a ram knocks him down, Damian turns the encounter into an energetic game of dodging, wrestling, and petting, laughing freely before becoming embarrassed that others might have seen him abandon his usual cool persona 157 158 159.
He strongly resists being excluded under the justification of protection. When the family discusses a dangerous situation without him, he insists that danger does not choose victims by age and that being Robin entitles him to participate. He also treats suggestions that he could be bullied as challenges to his competence, dismissing rumors and rejection rather than acknowledging vulnerability 431 432 452.
Abilities & Skills
Combat and Swordsmanship
- Assassin training: Raised under the League’s lethal standards, Damian was capable of defeating his mother by age ten 19.
- Swordsmanship: Practices a sword routine in the manor grounds and carries a blade, including during confrontations with his brothers 19 36 47.
- Unarmed combat: Quickly defeats two men attempting to rob him and Miaomiao 45 46.
- Restraint: Follows Batman’s no-kill principle despite his assassin background; he spares the would-be robbers and sends them away with a warning 26 45 46.
- Early martial proficiency: By eight, he could wield a Tang sword against groups of League ninjas and killers; later recollections describe him as having mastered numerous martial arts at that age 87 431.
- Thrown weapons: His assassin and ninja training makes darts and improvised concealed weapons natural tools. He strikes a fleeing Joker Gang member’s ankle with a small ornament and can embed a Batarang halfway into a tree trunk with a hand throw 135 151.
- Non-superpowered combatant: Explicitly states that he has no superpowers, attributing his effectiveness to his intelligence, weapons, and training 151.
Agility, Endurance, and Awareness
- Athletic conditioning: Wall climbing, rooftop racing, dart exercises, and pursuit games with Titus amount to little more than a warm-up for him 38.
- Quick reactions: Pulls Miaomiao behind a sofa as violence erupts at the Iceberg Lounge, keeping both of them clear of the initial chaos 44.
- Situational awareness: Notices when Miaomiao stops following him and discreetly observes the lounge while listening for useful information 43.
- Physical limitation: His height, rather than his strength, prevents him from carrying Miaomiao upstairs without dragging her tail across the floor 19.
- Extreme endurance from childhood: Crossed snowy mountains at four while injured and continued training with a broken arm 67 87.
- Sleep-conditioned vigilance: Repeated assassination attempts during his childhood trained him to wake and enter combat readiness at an unfamiliar breath. After a year in Gotham, he has only gradually learned to tolerate family members nearby without reacting defensively 155.
- Limits of body mass and attention: An unnoticed charge from a ram sends him flying despite his combat skill. Once alert to the animal’s approach, he repeatedly dodges its charges and can hold it in place 157 158.
Academic Knowledge and Teaching
- Advanced education: Talia kidnapped PhDs, scientists, and artists to tutor him. His knowledge is described as sufficient for advanced degrees in psychology, economics, and mechanics; he also studied chemistry, physics, medicine, electronics, music, painting, and other arts 39.
- Languages: Knows some Chinese, as do the other Wayne family members, and is later described as speaking multiple languages 21 431.
- Practical teaching: Uses English-language films and cartoons, supplemented by conversation, to improve Miaomiao’s spoken English 24.
- Everyday instruction: Finds a dressing tutorial for Miaomiao and demonstrates how to tie her shoelaces 41.
- Hacking: Could breach the North American Department of Defense’s firewall at six 87.
- Materials knowledge: Recognizes the difficulty of incorporating mermaid silk into different armor materials without compromising either its magic resistance or the equipment’s existing properties 122.
- Investment management: Maintains profitable personal investments funded with commissions he earned on League missions, rather than relying solely on family wealth 167.
Animal Care and Supernatural Knowledge
- Hands-on animal care: Personally tends a collection including cats, dogs, rabbits, poultry, swans, peacocks, cows, bats, and crocodiles 16 38.
- Coordination with Titus: Exercises the Bat-Hound through demanding games involving prediction, interception, dodging, and pursuit 38.
- Supernatural familiarity: His experience with the League’s spirits, mysterious powers, and Lazarus Pit makes him comparatively unsurprised by Miaomiao’s pearl-producing tears. He knows the Pit can restore youth and revive the dead 20.
- Merfolk knowledge: Explains to Jon that merfolk originate in Eastern mythology, weave silk from water, shed pearls as tears, control water, and possess powerful bodies, distinguishing them from Western fairy-tale mermaids 141.
- Learning practical husbandry: Initially overlooks Bat-Cow’s need for milking and cannot perform it effectively after studying tutorials. He later accepts Jon’s demonstration and practices at Kent Farm 141 142 156.
- Supernatural investigation: Draws on encounters with demons and shadow-walking beings at the Ninja Temple to argue that Blüdhaven’s traceless disappearances likely involve a metahuman or supernatural creature rather than an ordinary criminal 376.
Planning and Infiltration
- Security preparation: Identifies Miaomiao’s secret plan to visit Arkham, obtains its guard rotation and camera blind spots, and supplies a jammer for their attempted departure 110.
- Undercover discipline: Infiltrates a Joker Gang gathering with Miaomiao under false identities prepared by Tim and suppresses his anger at the gang’s indoctrination to preserve their cover 134.
- Operational reporting: Reports Joker’s kidnapping of Gotham Television Station employees and movement toward the abandoned amusement park, enabling Batman and Nightwing to respond 260.
- Christmas Eve planning: Miaomiao credits his idea after her Illusion Song successfully puts Arkham’s inhabitants to sleep for the family’s Christmas Eve operation 241.

- Media-room aquarium — Installed specifically to accommodate Miaomiao before he learns that she can take human form 36.
- Batarangs — Used for throwing demonstrations and combat-related tests. He throws an unsharpened one at Jon’s head in an attempt to trigger a dormant power 151 152.
- Short blade — Secretly brings one to Kent Farm and instinctively reaches beneath his pillow for it while struggling to sleep beside Jon 155.
- Jammer and Arkham security information — Supplies Miaomiao with a jammer and brings guard schedules annotated with camera blind spots for their planned Joker confrontation 110.
- Gas mask — His Bat Family equipment protects him from the widely dispersed fear toxin released during a coordinated villain attack 127.

- Vintage game cartridge — Receives a rare cartridge from Miaomiao’s New York shopping that fills a long-standing gap in his collection 367.
Relationships
- Bruce Wayne / Batman — Father and mentor. Damian eagerly welcomes him home after his disappearance and wants to succeed him as Batman. Bruce requires school attendance, respectful conduct, and completed homework as conditions for joining night patrols 16 19 39. Their relationship remains volatile even after Damian becomes Robin: he idolizes Bruce and refuses to tolerate criticism of him, but also argues and fights with him, with one past clash described as nearly fatal to Bruce. Later, Bruce increasingly recognizes Damian’s emotional insecurity and explicitly assures him that family support is not pity 79 87 431 432 452.
- Talia al Ghul — Mother and childhood trainer. She raised him as her ideal heir and sent him to Bruce after Damian became capable of defeating her 18 19. Her methods included unpredictable, potentially lethal ambushes, even while he slept 155.
- Ra’s al Ghul — Maternal grandfather and League leader, who helped prepare Damian for succession 18 19. Alongside Talia, he participated in the lethal training that taught Damian to trust no one, including his own relatives 155.
- Alfred Pennyworth — Caregiver and firm authority figure. He stops Damian’s public quarrel with Tim and later disciplines Damian and Dick for damaging the sitting room 15 48. Alfred also bans him from the kitchen after a failed attempt to prepare Titus’s food causes an explosion 95.
- Dick Grayson / Nightwing — Eldest brother, whose affectionate teasing provokes Damian. Tim describes their roughhousing as a form of brotherly bonding 21 47. Dick restrains rather than seriously harms Damian during their violent first meeting, later agrees to keep the anti-Joker plan secret, and continues provoking him through nicknames, hugs, and hair-ruffling 79 134 193.
- Timothy Drake / Red Robin — Older brother and frequent verbal sparring partner. Tim calls him “Dami” despite his objections and worries that Miaomiao is acquiring Damian’s mischievous tendencies 15 24. Damian originally nearly kills Tim while attempting to take his place as Batman’s partner. Their later cooperation includes the anti-Joker campaign, for which Tim supplies false identities and hacking support; their teasing continues through threats to show Damian’s first reaction to Miaomiao 78 134 141 209 432.
- Jason Todd / Red Hood — Older brother with whom Damian shares mutual dislike. Despite their insults, Damian recognizes the horror of Jason’s experiences and passes along Alfred’s dinner invitation 36 46. Jason recalls saving Damian from a pursuing clone, while Damian later joins Miaomiao’s effort to punish Joker for hurting Jason and participates in the amusement-park project with his brothers 87 110 170 172.
- Miaomiao — Close companion who becomes his adopted older sister. Damian initially wants to “keep” her, then accepts Bruce’s insistence that she is a person rather than a pet. Their friendship grows through movies, snacks, and shared mockery of fictional plots 18 19 24 48 64. By Chapter 80, she is the person he spends the most time with and shares his strongest friendship with. He calls her “Little Fish,” watches over her during stressful work, resists Tony’s attempt to draw her away from Wayne Manor, and is pleased to become the first person besides Bruce whom she invites into the ocean for recreation 80 124 206 229 241.
- Titus / Bat-Hound — Animal companion and exercise partner. Damian feeds and walks him, and the pair practice elaborate athletic games together 38. Titus also nudges him during his rude exchanges with Jon and prevents him from slipping into the pool while chasing Tim 141.
- Goliath — Adopted Dragon Bat whose affectionate approach causes Damian to spare him after killing the other guardians of Bialya’s scepter. Their meeting is described as an early crack in the emotional armor imposed by the League 55.
- Bat-Cow — Rescued, genetically modified brown-and-white dairy cow with facial markings resembling a bat mask. Damian insists on adopting her despite Batman’s objections and promises to supervise and care for her himself 141 156.
- Jonathan “Jon” Kent / Little Jo — Initially the target of Damian’s scorn and accusations of incompetence. At Kent Farm, the boys discuss their isolation, Damian admits he does not hate Jon, and they agree to a truce. Jon helps him learn to milk cows and becomes a genuine friend outside Wayne Manor 141 152 155 156 159.
- Martha Kent — Her sincere warmth unsettles Damian because it differs from the hostility, flattery, and calculated attention he is accustomed to. She shares Jon’s painful experiences with him and gives the children space to spend time together 150 152 153 157.
- Miss Susie — Teacher who refuses his bribes and threats, challenges Bruce’s parenting, and declines a promotion offered through his donations. Damian must complete his overdue homework, apologize to her, and listen to her advice before regaining patrol privileges 431.
- Stephanie Brown / Spoiler — Provokes him by using “Little Fish,” which he regards as his own special nickname for Miaomiao. Stephanie continues with Miaomiao’s permission despite his objections 229.
- Jarro — A would-be Robin at the Watchtower. Damian is absent when Miaomiao makes Jarro a miniature uniform based on Robin’s design; Bruce privately anticipates that seeing it would infuriate Damian. No direct confrontation occurs in the supplied account 461.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Bruce’s Return and Miaomiao’s Arrival
- Waits at Gotham Harbor with Alfred and Tim, complains about the press, and is the first son to rush forward and embrace Bruce 15 16.
- Repeatedly asks whether he can keep Miaomiao. Bruce explains that adoption would make her his older sister, not his pet 16 18 19.
- His established enthusiasm for animals supplies Alfred’s public explanation for the manor’s aquatic construction project: Damian supposedly wants to keep marine life 23.
Helping Miaomiao Adjust
- Receives “babysitting duty” while the others deal with work left behind by Bruce’s disappearance. His film-based lessons rapidly improve Miaomiao’s everyday English 24.
- Challenges her belief in fate, then laughs and high-fives her when she jokes about dealing with anyone who threatens her 25.
- Reacts indignantly to discovering that she could transform her tail into legs all along, having already installed an aquarium for her 35 36.
- Reluctantly agrees to take her shopping. Bruce intends the outing to help both children: Miaomiao can experience human society, while Damian can share in her liveliness and childish curiosity 39 40.
Shopping and the Iceberg Lounge
- Helps Miaomiao dress, ties her shoes, and takes her to Gotham’s largest mall. To quiet her constant questions, he repeatedly buys her food, turning the outing into a street-food tour 41 42.
- Stops her from swimming with the Iceberg Lounge’s penguins and shelters her when Red Hood attacks the establishment 43 44.
- Allows her to keep a frightened penguin chick, later named Jiujio, and defeats two would-be robbers outside 45 46.
- Encounters Jason, delivers Alfred’s invitation, and decides that Batman should explain Jason’s past to Miaomiao 46.
Family Dinner and Adoption
- Chases Dick after being hugged, teased, and photographed. Their roughhousing destroys Alfred’s treasured teapot and Tim’s teacup, earning disciplinary attention and cookie punishments 47 48.
- Urges Miaomiao to accept Bruce’s adoption offer, insisting that he has already agreed to let her be his older sister 48.
- Is the first to protest when she reveals that she is in her fifties. Her explanation that merfolk reach adulthood at eighty leaves him stunned 49.
Gotham Villains and Family Affection
- Hears Miaomiao’s account of befriending Killer Croc and her suggestion that Damian could keep him, prompting an argument with Tim over Croc’s cuteness. The family later discusses the dangers of her friendships with Gotham villains 55.
- Teases Miaomiao when the family assigns her a large villains compendium to study 56.
- Is taken hostage by Bane to force Batman into a confrontation; Miaomiao defeats Bane and he is taken away by the GCPD 64.
- Blushes and denies liking Miaomiao when she asks directly, only for her to identify his answer as a lie. When she interprets Bruce’s scolding as shyness, Damian challenges her to a duel, then puts away his blade and goes to feed the animals after she refuses 80.
The Anti-Joker Campaign
- Discovers Miaomiao’s plan to punish Joker for hurting Jason and insists on accompanying her, providing security information and a jammer. They choose a Batcycle rather than the Batmobile, but Batman catches them before departure 110.
- Reluctantly accepts Bruce’s order not to approach Arkham. The family conceals the attempted mission from Jason to avoid reopening his conflict with Bruce 116.
- Helps Miaomiao take breaks from difficult mermaid-silk armor experiments by pulling her out of the Batcave to eat, play games, and visit friends 124.
- Works with Tim, Miaomiao, and Dick on a plan to reduce Joker’s influence. He and Miaomiao infiltrate a gang gathering at an abandoned amusement park and help bring about police arrests, although the leader with hypnosis abilities escapes 134 135.
- Suggests repeatedly beating Joker, but Tim explains that frequent severe injuries could stimulate Dionesium and make Joker’s regeneration stronger 160.
- Celebrates Jason’s legal purchase of the abandoned amusement park with his siblings and joins the Drake Manor conference that favors removing Joker’s remnants and giving the park new life rather than destroying it 170 172.
- Participates in the family’s discussion of the successful use of Bruce Wayne gossip to displace negative Gotham news online 193.
- Later reports Joker’s kidnapping of television employees and return to the amusement park. Bruce orders him not to act alone while Batman and Nightwing respond to Joker’s hostage game 260.
Jon Kent and the Kent Farm Visit
- Mocks Jon’s unfamiliarity with merfolk, then fights with Tim when Tim threatens to show footage of Damian’s own first reaction to Miaomiao 141.
- Rushes to Bat-Cow’s side when she becomes distressed, but is embarrassed to learn from Jon that she needs milking. His attempt after studying instructions is unsuccessful 141 142.
- Accompanies Miaomiao to Kent Farm partly from concern about her safety away from large bodies of water and partly because Jon mentions the farm’s animals 149.
- Throws an unsharpened Batarang at Jon to test whether an alarming impact might awaken another power. Miaomiao treats the swelling while explaining Damian’s familiarity with dangerous training 152.
- Discusses loneliness and others’ fear of him with Jon during their sleepless night. He admits that he does not hate Jon and agrees to a truce 155.
- Accepts Jon’s milking instruction and persists through repeated mistakes 156.
- Is knocked down by the ram Fast, then turns their confrontation into carefree play. The visit gives Damian and Miaomiao a friend their own age outside the household and Gotham’s villains 157 158 159.
Christmas and Shared Recreation
- Helps explain that Christmas is a family holiday when Tony invites Miaomiao elsewhere; she chooses to remain with the Wayne Family 207.
- Explains that the extended Bat Family includes those who regularly visit Wayne Manor and are genuinely regarded as family, while again emphasizing his biological connection to Bruce 208.
- Objects when Stephanie uses his nickname “Little Fish” for Miaomiao, but fails to stop their good-natured teasing 229.
- Helps with the Christmas Eve plan to lull Arkham into sleep, checks on Miaomiao afterward, and gives her an energy bar. She then takes him on a deep underwater excursion inside a protective bubble 241.
- Receives a long-sought vintage game cartridge from Miaomiao’s New York gifts 367.
- Reacts with anger and concealed hurt upon learning that Bruce took Miaomiao to an amusement park without him; Jason and Tim also show displeasure 372.
Blüdhaven Investigation and Inclusion
- Joins Tim and Jason in discussing Dick’s investigation of unexplained disappearances in Blüdhaven. He argues that the complete absence of traces suggests a supernatural or metahuman culprit and connects the cases with the harbor’s vampire legend 376.
- Returns from school to find the family gathered without him after discussion of Dick’s account of a vampire-dominated future 430 431.
- Having lost his communicator and patrol privileges over missing homework, completes the assignment and apologizes to Miss Susie. He then confronts Bruce over whether his age, temper, or League background caused his exclusion 431.
- Rejects being kept uninformed in the name of protection and asserts his responsibility as Robin. Bruce reflects on how far he has come from the boy who nearly killed Tim to seize the role 432.
School and Emotional Support
- Requests permission to move ahead to the high-school division when Miaomiao is preparing to attend school, but Bruce reiterates that schooling is intended to develop ordinary social experience rather than supply academic knowledge 433.
- Warns Miaomiao not to reveal her background to curious students and awkwardly offers help, directing her to Tim if the distance between their campuses prevents Damian from responding 435.
- Bristles when Bruce asks whether he has been bullied, dismissing nonphysical hostility as meaningless gossip. Bruce clarifies that rejection and isolation can cause harm and assures him that he does not have to shoulder everything alone 452.
