As a child, Medusa dreamed of becoming queen, leading the Snake-People out of the desert, and giving them peaceful lives. Her younger sister, Die, instead wanted to travel throughout the Jia Ma Empire and see the wider world. The sisters had identical faces, and Medusa cultivated diligently to prepare for her future responsibilities 5.

The tribe’s succession rules required one sister to live as queen and the other to die. Die deliberately died at Medusa’s hands so that her elder sister could take the throne. Afterward, Medusa’s former smiles disappeared behind a cold exterior. Snake Ji and the other elders had insisted upon the rules that made this sacrifice necessary 5 9.

Despite her strength and popularity, Medusa did not initially hold unquestioned authority. The Four Great Elders controlled important tribal decisions, while the previous queen, Snake Ji, retained considerable influence. Her severity is rooted in responsibility rather than indifference. She conceals the takeover of her body to avoid causing panic and initially seeks seclusion to prevent the unknown intruder from harming her people. She also rejects invading the Jia Ma Empire, recognizing that a common threat would unite its human population against the Snake-People 4 5 14.

With Chen Xuan, her hostility gradually gives way to trust, encouragement, and affection.
