Background / History
Robert grew up alongside Eddard Stark at the Eyrie under Jon Arryn, whom both regarded as a foster father and mentor. When the Mad King demanded their surrender, Jon refused and rose against him, beginning the rebellion that overthrew the Targaryen dynasty 194 272.
During the rebellion, Robert drew support from Storm’s End, the Vale, the North, and the Riverlands. He killed Rhaegar Targaryen with his warhammer at the Trident and ultimately became king 15 95 123.
Robert’s marriage to Cersei secured an alliance between Houses Baratheon and Lannister, but his fixation on Lyanna Stark poisoned their relationship from the beginning. Drunk on his wedding night, he called Cersei by Lyanna’s name—an insult she never forgot 14.
Appearance
- Imposing height: At six feet five inches, Robert towers over the people gathered to welcome him at Winterfell 14.
- Former warrior’s bearing: In his youth, he wore armor and a great helm crowned with branching antlers; even Ned struggled to lift his warhammers 14.
- Obesity: By his arrival at Winterfell, his face is heavy with flesh and he requires a mounting block to dismount 14.
- Declining health: Later, his black velvet coat stretches tightly over his belly, his face carries an unhealthy flush, and his breath reeks of wine 172.
- Eyes and voice: He has blue eyes and a booming voice, frequently described through his thunderous commands and laughter 14 241.
Personality
Robert values martial courage far more than administrative competence. He mocks Lynn’s tournament ambitions until Lynn offers to kill Viserys, then immediately becomes enthusiastic and promises extravagant rewards. The revelation of an army of the dead similarly rekindles his desire for a war worthy of his former strength 95 173.
He dislikes council meetings, accounts, and court intrigue, leaving much of the work of government to Jon Arryn and Ned. Nevertheless, he understands warfare well enough to reconsider executing Cersei when warned that an unverified accusation could plunge the kingdoms into civil war 123 124 173 241.
Alcohol and Tywin’s poison intensify Robert’s brutality and paranoia. After slaughtering Petyr Baelish, he enjoys the court’s terror, suspects even Ned of disloyalty, and treats submission as proof of weakness rather than a reason to restore trust 194 195.
His final hours bring an unusual clarity. He admits that he idealized Lyanna, neglected his responsibilities, mistreated Cersei, failed his children, and wrongly doubted Ned. He also abandons his hatred of Daenerys and asks that she be spared 241.
Abilities & Skills
Warhammer Combat
Robert was a formidable warrior before his physical decline 14 241.
- Killed Rhaegar Targaryen with his warhammer at the Trident 15 95.
- Could crush an enemy’s breastplate with a single hammer blow 241.
- His strength deteriorates with obesity, drinking, poison, and his final injury; alcohol and rage also ruin his aim during Petyr’s execution 172 194 239.
Military Judgment
Robert recognizes the consequences of a large-scale war, despite his weakness at political maneuvering 123 124.
- Reconsiders his pursuit of Cersei’s execution after Lynn and Ned explain the danger of a Lannister rebellion and wider intervention 123.
- Accepts Lynn’s forces and dragon as potential weapons against the dead 173 174.
- Later plans to weaken his former allies by provoking conflict among the North, Vale, and Riverlands 224.
Royal Authority
As king, Robert can confer honors, make appointments, and issue judgments 95 115 201.
- Grants Lynn entry into every tournament event and personally knights him after his victory 95 115.
- Orders betrothals dissolved and new marriage arrangements imposed 174 188.
- Appoints Sansa Stark as Master of Coin 201.
- Orders Stannis stripped of his titles and lands and commands a blockade of Dragonstone 239.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Warhammer — His signature weapon in his youth and the weapon used to kill Rhaegar 15 95.
- Antler-crowned great helm — Part of his youthful battle attire 14.
- Gem-studded royal longsword — Used to knight Lynn; Robert also grips it while threatening him in the throne room 115 172.
- Borrowed Kingsguard longsword — Seized and used to hack Petyr Baelish to death 194.
Relationships
- Eddard “Ned” Stark — Childhood companion, fellow rebel, and Hand of the King. Robert’s poisoned paranoia badly damages their friendship, but he seeks Ned’s forgiveness and entrusts him with his final wishes 15 195 241.
- Jon Arryn — Foster father and mentor whose death leaves Robert distrustful of his court. Robert condemns Lysa for Jon’s murder 15 194 272.
- Lyanna Stark — Former betrothed and the woman Robert mourns for years. On his deathbed, he acknowledges that he may have loved an imagined version of her and privately suspected she had willingly left with Rhaegar 14 15 241.
- Cersei Lannister — Queen and estranged wife. Their marriage deteriorates through humiliation, accusations, and physical violence; Robert finally admits that he wronged her 14 104 224 241.
- Lynn — Initially a mocked Night’s Watch petitioner, later a knight and royal son-in-law. Robert alternates between rewarding his achievements, regarding him as a loyal servant, and plotting his death 95 115 174 199 224 226.
- Joffrey — Publicly recognized firstborn and heir, whom Robert alternately protects and condemns. Robert dies believing Joffrey is his son; Cersei later tells Joffrey that Jaime is his biological father 103 188 241 336.
- Myrcella — Royal princess whose marriage to Lynn is ordered to bind Lynn’s military and financial resources to the crown. She turns against Robert after he strikes Cersei; Jaime identifies her privately as his daughter 174 224 226.
- Stannis Baratheon — Younger brother whom Robert denounces as a usurper near the end of his life 239.
- Renly Baratheon — Youngest brother and Master of Ships. Robert orders him away from King’s Landing, fearing his ambitions for the throne 201 239 241.
- Daenerys Targaryen — Initially a target of Robert’s demand to erase the Targaryen line. His final request is that Ned let her live 15 241.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Winterfell Visit
Robert arrives at Winterfell with the royal procession and reunites warmly with Ned. In the Stark crypts, he demands that Ned become Hand, proposes a marriage between their children, and insists that Viserys and Daenerys be killed. His appeal to the deaths of Rickard and Brandon Stark leaves Ned unable to voice his objection 14 15.
Lynn’s Tournament Bargain
Lynn offers to bring Robert Viserys’s head in exchange for tournament entry and knighthood. Robert promises not only a knighthood but also a lordship, castle, and exemption from the Night’s Watch restriction on marriage. After Lynn defeats Loras Tyrell, Robert personally performs the knighting ceremony before the crowd 95 115.
Accusations Against Cersei
An assassin’s accusations provoke Robert into blaming Cersei for attempts against him and Joffrey. Jaime disputes the evidence, while Barristan persuades Robert to confine her in Maegor’s Holdfast pending investigation 103 104.
Later rumors accuse Cersei of murdering Jon Arryn. Robert grants her a trial by combat, but Lynn and Ned warn him that executing her could provoke war with House Lannister. Donnel subsequently volunteers as Robert’s champion 123 129.
The Northern Threat and Marriage Alliance
When Lynn returns, Robert threatens him for admitting Wildlings into the kingdom and ruling beyond the Wall. Viserys’s severed head earns praise but does not immediately erase those accusations. Lynn’s captive wight then forces the court to confront the threat of the dead 172.
Robert’s hostility briefly gives way to excitement over a new war. Lynn presents his dragon, eight thousand Unsullied, and white-sugar trade as resources for defending the realm. Robert accepts the offer and orders Lynn to marry Myrcella before his Stark betrothed 173 174.
Poisoned Tyranny
Tywin’s poison worsens Robert’s loss of restraint. When Lysa’s envoy demands Petyr’s release and threatens him with the Vale’s army, Robert publicly hacks Petyr to death and orders his head sent to the Eyrie as his answer 194 195.
He then accuses Catelyn and House Stark of possible complicity, demands that she come to King’s Landing to kneel before him, and forces Ned into a humiliating public submission. Lynn exploits Robert’s distrust by recommending Sansa as Master of Coin, presenting her as a controllable hostage who will secure Ned’s loyalty 195 199 201.
Robert also dissolves Joffrey and Sansa’s betrothal and punishes the prince. Sansa later brings him evidence of embezzlement, leading him to have two household officials whipped to death 188 212.
Scheme Against the North
Robert reveals to Cersei that he intends to send Lynn north and use him to provoke war among Ned Stark, Lysa Arryn, and Hoster Tully. He supplies only three thousand poorly equipped militia, intending to weaken the competing houses and have Lynn killed. Cersei and Myrcella warn Lynn and arrange covert Lannister supplies, while Jaime resigns from the Kingsguard to accompany him 224 226.
Death and Succession
A boar tears open Robert’s abdomen. Pycelle cauterizes the wound, but internal injuries, fever, and Robert’s existing poisoning leave him dying. Robert orders Stannis stripped of his holdings, sends Renly back to Storm’s End, and summons Ned for a private farewell 239.
Robert admits his failures and asks Ned to protect Joffrey, prevent his brothers from destroying the realm, and spare Daenerys. Ned promises to protect Robert’s bloodline without revealing Joffrey’s true parentage. Robert dies after thanking him 241.
Joffrey is subsequently crowned with Lynn’s public support. The disputed succession remains a source of war: Stannis later declares himself king and denounces Joffrey as a false heir 242 439.
