Background / History

Marriage to Robert and the Succession Secret

Cersei’s marriage to Robert secured an alliance between Houses Baratheon and Lannister. She initially liked him, but his attachment to Lyanna Stark embittered their relationship. On their wedding night, the drunken Robert called her Lyanna’s name—an humiliation Cersei never forgot 14.

Cersei maintained a secret relationship with her twin brother, Jaime. Their children—Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen—were publicly presented as Robert’s heirs. Exposure of their parentage would threaten both the children’s lives and the Lannisters’ hold on the throne 22 214 215.

Winterfell and Bran’s Fall

At Winterfell, Cersei objected to Robert immediately visiting Lyanna’s statue in the crypts, but he ignored her. Later, Bran discovered Cersei and Jaime together in an abandoned tower; Jaime pushed him from the window to conceal their relationship 14 23 225.

After Lynn saved Bran, Cersei questioned him about the fall and offered gold or a position. Lynn refused the rewards and maintained that he had heard Bran scream while practicing swordsmanship, then seen him fall 25.

Blackmail and Trial by Combat

Cersei initially believed Ned Stark’s investigation into Jon Arryn’s death was going nowhere. That confidence was misplaced: Ned’s apparent incompetence was an act, and Lynn already knew the secret of her children’s birth 89 107.

Lynn also manufactured evidence against her by controlling an assassin who accused Cersei of ordering attacks on Robert and Joffrey. He subsequently confronted her with knowledge of Lancel’s preparation of unusually strong wine for Robert’s boar hunt, the depletion of the Lannister gold mines, and Tywin’s debts to the Iron Bank 103 104 120.

Cersei proposed marrying Joffrey to Margaery Tyrell to secure Highgarden’s support. Lynn countered that Robert could block the marriage and that exposure of Joffrey’s parentage would undermine it. He demanded Cersei’s submission, threatening to reveal her secrets while offering protection for her family 120.

Separately accused of poisoning Jon Arryn, Cersei denied the charge; Lynn acknowledged that the Lannisters had not killed him. Robert selected Lynn as her champion to avoid a war with House Lannister. Lynn made his protection conditional on Myrcella accompanying him as a hostage 120 123 124.

Lynn defeated Donnel in the trial by combat, and Robert declared Cersei innocent. After her release from Maegor’s Holdfast, she rejected Jaime’s attempts to celebrate, blamed his injury for her dependence on Lynn, and drove him from her room 131 132.

Seeking an Alliance with Lynn

As Lynn’s military strength grew, Cersei sought to turn their coercive arrangement into an alliance. She offered low-priced trade between Casterly Rock and the Gift, including grain, ironwork, and textiles. She also revealed that Robert was being slowly poisoned and asked Lynn to use his army and dragons to defend Joffrey against Stannis and Renly 179.

Robert ordered Lynn to marry Myrcella. Before the wedding, Cersei threatened to burn everything Lynn valued if he harmed her daughter. Lynn exposed his knowledge of her hidden wildfire stores and warned that any fire would also endanger her children, forcing her to abandon the threat 188 209 210.

After Myrcella discovered her mother’s involvement with Lynn, Cersei revealed the truth of her parentage. She explained her submission as a desperate attempt to keep her children alive and encouraged Myrcella to secure Lynn’s protection through calculated vulnerability. Lynn later witnessed this conversation through Greensight 214 215 216.

When Robert struck Cersei and disclosed a plan to provoke war among the North, Vale, and Riverlands, she warned Myrcella. Together they proposed covert Lannister shipments of iron, steel, smiths, and other supplies through White Harbor. Lynn accepted their offer 224 225.

Tywin’s Broken Promises and Renewed Confinement

After Robert’s death, Lynn publicly supported Joffrey’s succession, convincing Cersei that their bargain had succeeded. She later discovered that Tywin had sent none of the promised aid during Lynn’s northern war. Fearing Lynn would regard her as a betrayer, she begged Tywin to provide grain, gold, and other assistance, but he refused 242 304.

Tywin then sought to marry her to Loras Tyrell. Cersei attempted to escape King’s Landing disguised as a maid, carrying gold and jewels and hoping to find a ship north. Tywin intercepted her at the docks and ordered her confined in Maegor’s Holdfast again 308.

Joffrey later brought Cersei out of a sept and celebrated having rescued her. Nevertheless, her renewed appeal to Lynn failed: he rejected her offers of Lannister wealth and armies, condemned the family’s empty promises, and warned that he might replace them as rulers of the Westerlands 323 331.

Joffrey’s Betrayal and Loyalty to Lynn

Cersei revealed to Joffrey that Jaime was his father. Rather than accept her reassurance about their Lannister blood, Joffrey decided that those who knew the secret threatened his throne and began strangling her. Lynn intervened and saved her 336 337.

The attack shattered Cersei’s faith in her eldest son. Lynn offered an alternative future through Myrcella and a prospective child carrying both his and Lannister blood. Cersei chose to serve him, motivated by survival, her daughter’s future, and revenge against those who had abandoned her 338 339 340.

Joffrey subsequently ordered Tommen killed. Lynn secretly substituted a masked corpse and hid the boy safely. After revealing the rescue, he received Cersei’s explicit pledge of loyalty. At his direction, she convinced Joffrey that Stannis and Renly had murdered Tommen, provoking preparations for war 344 345.

Departure from King’s Landing

Cersei left King’s Landing with Lynn aboard Winter, resolving to begin a new life. Her presence beside him astonished Ned and Catelyn; she later reunited uneasily with Tyrion at Winterfell 369 371 394.

When Jaime confronted her, Cersei said she had chosen to become Lynn’s woman rather than remain Tywin’s instrument for marriage alliances. Although she lacked a formal title in Lynn’s household, she described her new position as an escape from the demands of family glory 404.

Despite that decision, she still wanted the attention Lynn gave his other companions. Lynn discovered this wish by entering her dream through the Glass Candle and subsequently acted on it 417.

After Tywin’s defeat, Cersei confronted him at Casterly Rock, condemning his treatment of her as a bargaining chip for political marriages. She also reacted with disgust to Tyrion’s account of Tywin’s abuse of Tysha. During the subsequent settlement, she witnessed Myrcella’s appointment as Warden of the West 450 452.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long golden hair, described as curls on her arrival at Winterfell and frequently worn loose over her shoulders 14 22 209.
  • Eyes: Usually described as deep green; some passages instead call them blue 14 104 120.
  • Bearing: Graceful and overtly aristocratic, with an arrogance that remains conspicuous even without a crown 14 25.
  • Clothing: Lavish silk and brocade gowns in red, gold, and black; she adopts plain dark clothes or a maid’s disguise for secret visits and escape attempts 25 123 172 178 308.
  • Beauty: The narration repeatedly calls her the most beautiful woman in the Seven Kingdoms 25 178.

Personality

Cersei takes pride in her beauty, royal position, and Lannister birth. She treats Lynn’s modest room with visible contempt and maintains a public posture of dignity even while facing accusations that could cost her life 25 123.

Her pursuit of power is closely tied to fear for her children. She tells Myrcella that she has suffered nightmares of Robert discovering their parentage since their births. She sees political strength and Lynn’s dragons as protection against execution, exile, and the collapse of her family’s position 214 215.

Cersei combines genuine maternal devotion with manipulation. She acknowledges that her overprotection contributed to her children’s failings, yet deliberately teaches Myrcella to conceal her changed outlook and use beauty, status, and apparent innocence to secure Lynn’s attachment 215.

Her defiance repeatedly gives way to compromise when she encounters superior power. Initially, she treats submission to Lynn as a temporary survival tactic; after Joffrey attacks her and Lynn saves Tommen, her loyalty becomes explicit. By Winterfell, she rejects Tywin’s definition of family duty and seeks an identity beyond being his political tool 210 340 344 404.
