History

Founding and renaming

Danyla initially developed agriculture and crafts on New Dragonstone Island. After discovering a mountain rich in gems, she decided to investigate its resources while keeping their value secret until she possessed enough strength and authority to protect them 29.

King Jaehaerys renamed the island Holy Flame Island, taking the name from Danyla’s residence in Dragonstone Castle, the Holy Flame Tower. He also proposed announcing the change throughout the Seven Kingdoms and granting her the title of Holy Flame Prince during a tournament 73. Within three years, Danyla had transformed the formerly barren island into a prosperous domain, with Dragonfire Wine and Dragon Porcelain providing major profits 167.

Oldtown and the Long Night

Following the seizure of Oldtown’s wealth, Holy Flame Island received captured ships, treasure, and House Hightower’s property deeds. Danyla also directed detained merchant flotillas to the island under the Holy Flame Fleet’s escort. At this stage, the unfinished harbor still discouraged larger merchant fleets from visiting voluntarily 133.

During the Long Night, Samwell and Medrick maintained the island’s administration while Danyla was missing. Refugee settlement pushed its population beyond 100,000, but the interruption of grain and livestock imports forced reductions in daily meals 199 207. Construction continued throughout the crisis, and the island’s fleet secured imported grain at normal prices before worsening shortages drove prices upward elsewhere 208 209.

Commercial and royal center

After Danyla gained control of Oldtown, she redirected Holy Flame Island toward trade, precision crafts, and advanced research. Much of its large-scale manufacturing moved to other territories, while its fields and pastures became dedicated to developing improved varieties 287.

Holy Flame Castle’s main structure was completed before its decorative work, and the entire castle was finished by the time of Jacaerys’s birth. Viserys and his family had already lived there for several years 410 426. Jaehaerys’s final days, abdication in favor of Danyla and Daemon, and dragon-producing funeral were associated with the island and its Dragonpit 430. Their eldest son, Aurelion, subsequently received the title Prince of Holy Flame Island 431.

After Danyla ascended to godhood, Isara, Igaia, and Ilisa jointly governed the island and supervised all dragonriders. Under Aurelion I’s reorganization of the Holy Flame Fleet, its strongest force remained stationed there 597.

Geography and Magical Environment

Terrain and climate

  • Volcanic interior: An active volcano stands behind Holy Flame Castle; the open-air Dragonpit extends into it 410.
  • Northern mountains: These contain Magic Gem veins, which expanded as the island accumulated greater quantities of magical energy 565.
  • Gourd Bay: A secluded bay behind the castle, bordered by water on one side and mountains on the other three 309.
  • Limited farmland: The island’s small land area constrained porcelain production and crop experimentation, while its favorable climate made testing cold-resistant crops difficult 176.
  • Winter conditions: During the Long Night, heavy snow had little apparent effect on local temperatures. Crops gradually stopped growing, but pasture grass continued to fare comparatively well 199.
  • Land reclamation: Clearing rocky hills for dragonstone production created new farmland; specially prepared manure could improve the exposed ground within a few months 308.

Weirwoods and magical energy

  • Myracis’s weirwood: Danyla and the Children of the Forest cultivated the island’s first mutated weirwood. Its connection to a Great Dragon allowed it to withstand ordinary fire and high temperatures, and it grew particularly quickly when Myracis was nearby 195.
  • Magical gathering: The island was already rich in magical energy before the Long Night. Its weirwood gathered additional energy during the crisis, benefiting Myracis when she returned 206.
  • Weirwood nursery: With Herb’s assistance, the island established a nursery covering hundreds of mu. Its cultivation program supplied weirwoods for extensive planting in the Stepstones and Sevan Peninsula 402.
  • Runic buildings: By the later period, the island’s dragonstone buildings were carved with Bronze Runes. Castle towers also contained Magic Gems, while weirwoods absorbed and stored much of the gathered energy in their roots 565.
  • Concentrated reserves: Gourd Bay, the treasuries, and the dragonpits accumulated especially dense energy from magical carcasses, weirwoods, the volcano, and gem veins 565.

Rainbow Energy Crystal

  • An enormous fractured Rainbow Energy Crystal, more than ten meters across, lies beneath the volcano 565.
  • Danyla suspected it was part of the heart of an ancient, immensely powerful energy-body lifeform. She detected no remaining consciousness, but could not determine whether it had been completely destroyed or deliberately erased 565.
  • She regarded the crystal as the source of the island’s abundance and a lasting energy supply that could sustain its dragons even during a future magical low period 565.

White Sheep Town

  • Had more than 50,000 registered residents and had nearly reached capacity when the Long Night began 199.
  • Attracted visitors through Dragonfire Wine, Dragon Porcelain, jewelry, glassware, textiles, and distinctive seasonings 208.
  • Eventually occupied the northern end of Holy Flame City’s western district. Its shops moved closer to the Fighting Arena, while its workshops concentrated on secret research and technological development 309.

Holy Flame Castle

  • Also called Danyla Castle, the complex incorporates a thousand-meter mountain and is built entirely from dragonstone 410.
  • Its three concentric walls extend from the mountain’s foot toward its middle slopes. The outermost wall measures fifty meters high and twenty meters wide 309.
  • The completed Main Keep, the Holy Flame Tower, rises more than two hundred meters. It can be reached only by Great Dragon or a specially constructed rope elevator 426.
  • Its hanging garden includes a vast dragonstone platform where Great Dragons can land 563.
  • Private docks and cliffside treasuries lie behind the castle in Gourd Bay 287.

Dragonpit and Cremation Complex

  • Open-air Dragonpit: Built against and into the volcano, with large quantities of Magic Gems and surrounding weirwoods. Its quality was described as second only to Oldtown’s Dragonpit 410.
  • Restricted access: Only the island’s Dragonkeepers could enter the Dragonpit, which ranked among its most closely guarded locations 410.
  • Funeral Priests: Temple priests who experienced magical replenishment through Funeral Rites became the island’s first Funeral Priests 92.
  • Continuing cremations: Silverwing eventually attended the Cremation Platform daily after recognizing the rites’ benefits, allowing cremation work to continue while other dragons were absent 410.
  • Later expansion: The cremation complex grew more than tenfold, with the number of platforms and towers rising to seven. New hatchlings received corresponding Septon’s Halls, enlarged as they grew 563.

Economy and Trade

Principal goods

Product Economic Role
Dragonfire Wine One of the island’s original major sources of profit. Large-scale production later moved to Oldtown and Sunhouse Castle, while the island refined recipes and reserved almost all its own superior-tasting production for royal use 167 287.
Dragon Porcelain A highly profitable export whose production was constrained by the island’s limited land. Danyla planned to move production to the North 167 176 287.
Dragon salt Refined sea salt mixed with spices, seasonings, and essence extracted from dragon dung, sold in elaborate porcelain containers as an exclusive luxury seasoning 308.
Glassware Precision glassmaking remained on the island. Craftsmen recruited from Myr, dragonfire assistance, and suitable sand from Dorne enabled crystal-clear glass and greatly increased output 287 414.
Jewelry and crystal carving Precision crafts retained locally after broader manufacturing shifted elsewhere 287.
Weapons and armor Island workshops produced advanced equipment, though weaponsmithing was gradually transferred to Cisland 225 287.
Improved livestock Superior young livestock, sterilized before sale, were among the goods drawing merchants to the harbor 308.

Harbor and shipbuilding

  • By Danyla’s return after the Long Night, the docks could berth more than 1,000 large three-masted sailing ships 208.
  • Holy Flame Harbor later ranked second only to King’s Landing in daily trading volume within the Seven Kingdoms, generating tens of thousands of Gold Dragons in monthly trade taxes 287.
  • More than 1,000 merchant ships visited daily by the period of Holy Flame City’s expansion 308.
  • The Holy Flame Island–Stepstones route subsequently carried the highest trade volume in the Narrow Sea 414.
  • Braavosi shipwrights established a large shipyard in the bay between Holy Flame Island and Dragonstone. Initially, it produced roughly one three-masted ship per month 208.
  • Danyla supplied designs for Nine-masted Dragon Ships, armored turtle escorts, and a luxurious mobile royal residence. These began as research plans rather than immediately completed vessels 208.
  • The Holy Flame Bank later supplied substantial working capital for the island’s wider operations 450.

Import dependence

  • Limited land made the island dependent on imports for almost all its grain, especially because brewing consumed large quantities 210.
  • At the start of the Long Night, reserves could feed the population for slightly more than six months. Reduced meal provisions were intended to extend that to about a year 199.
  • After the shift toward research, ordinary supplies came mainly from imports; Danyla’s manors outside King’s Landing could also support the island’s needs 287.

Treasuries

The cliffside vaults behind Holy Flame Castle were concealed by a massive dragonstone wall and protected by three successive doors: reinforced oak, a false-Valyrian-steel grille, and genuine Valyrian steel 287.

Treasury Documented Contents
First Treasury Gold bars, gems, antiques, paintings, calligraphy, and rare objects worth several hundred million Gold Dragons. Wealth came from overseas trading and seizures from House Hightower, House Cuy, and pirates 287.
Second Treasury Weapons, equipment, and Magic Gems. Initially held 500 sets of Valyria armor and weapons, plus more than 10,000 sets of advanced locally forged equipment 287.
Third Storehouse Rare spices, fine silks, and other valuable consumables retained after much of the original stock was resold or gifted 287.
Fourth Storehouse Fine wines, chiefly Dragonfire Wine. This storehouse extended half a kilometer into the mountain; dozens of additional wine cellars existed elsewhere in the island’s mountains 287.
Later equipment reserves The treasury held 1,000 sets of Valyrian steel plate armor and standard swords during the Myr campaign, and 10,000 sets of Valyrian steel equipment by the later magical resurgence 414 565.
  • Danyla valued her overall wealth at roughly one billion Gold Dragons, excluding her Great Dragons and Valyrian steel weapons; this was her personal wealth estimate, not a stated island treasury balance 287.
  • Captured treasures and ships continued arriving, requiring Samwell and White Sheep Town’s officials to work for days sorting and registering the shipments 296.
  • The greater treasure reserves remained untouched while Danyla spent proceeds from Rhoynar salvage on developing Ny Sar 450.

Government and Society

Administration

  • Danyla — Directed agriculture, livestock breeding, crafts, commerce, refugee settlement, fleet deployment, and ventures outside the island 206.
  • Samwell — Chief steward; managed settlement, finances, treasury registration, and construction during Danyla’s absences 199 207 296.
  • Medrick — Helped maintain stability during the Long Night and reported on trade, supplies, and development 207 208.
  • Rhaenyra — Took an active interest in island affairs after Danyla disappeared 206.
  • Isara — Served as de facto commander whenever Danyla was absent; even senior administrators were reluctant to defy her 563.
  • Isara, Igaia, and Ilisa — Became joint governors after Danyla’s ascension, with authority over all dragonriders and support from extensive directly ruled territories 597.

Refugees and public works

  • Early settlement policies welcomed refugees while screening those seeking to become permanent subjects. More than thirty thousand were settled in newly established interior manors during the Long Night 199.
  • Construction offered wages and meals. Some 200,000–300,000 refugees participated in infrastructure work during the Long Night; this figure describes workers involved, not a permanent population count 209.
  • Dragonstone roads connected every manor, while Blackstone Avenue extended to Dragonstone’s docks and fishing villages 209.
  • By the later Dornish expansion, Holy Flame Island had stopped accepting new subjects, although the Stepstones and Cisland remained open to settlers 404.

Education, research, and medicine

  • The island’s Citadel brought together maesters, scholars, healers, and sorcerers recruited from Westeros, Slaver’s Bay, and the Free Cities 309.
  • Jili developed Caltrop Dragonfire Bombs, using wildfire, ceramic triggering components, and wax-coated shells to improve transport and storage safety 309.
  • Glassworkers developed a naval telescope from the Citadel’s astronomical telescope. Danyla imposed permanent patent rights and strict controls on independent manufacture 412.
  • Across Holy Flame Island’s territories, ordinary education covered literacy and vocational skills. Exceptionally gifted students could receive otherwise expensive specialized Citadel education free of charge 450.
  • More than 30% of annual profits went into education, exceeded only by infrastructure spending 450.
  • Herb became the finest midwife on Holy Flame Island and Dragonstone, greatly improving infant survival rates. She also trained medical practitioners and developed herbal treatments that saved many lives during extreme weather 207 426 557.
  • The island sent students, healers, medicine, and supplies to assist a greyscale treatment settlement at Velonserys 452.

Religion

  • Danyla initially treated the Faith of the Seven, worship of the Lord of Light, and other Essosi religions equally within her domains. Many longstanding followers nevertheless preferred to pray directly to her 463.
  • A later decree ordered the eradication of heretical faiths. On the island, smaller temples were converted into Divine Dragon halls; priests who refused conversion were sacrificed to Great Dragons 563.

Defenses and Security

Fortifications

  • Holy Flame City’s southern wall stood 30–40 meters high and more than ten meters wide, with heavy crossbows and military supplies 308.
  • Holy Flame Castle’s outer wall had bastions roughly every dozen meters, equipped with advanced giant ballistae and wildfire stores. Dragonstone construction reduced the danger of dragonfire quickly melting the walls 309.
  • Five three-story watchtowers and a seven-story lighthouse on the northern peaks monitored surrounding waters for nearly a hundred li and guided incoming ships 209.
  • Two five-story fortresses flanked the shipyard, each holding one hundred soldiers and dozens of giant ballistae 208.
  • Caltrop Dragonfire Bombs and massive wildfire ballistae could fatally injure an adult Great Dragon. The dock defenses were described as capable of destroying a hundred-ship fleet 410.

Garrison and internal control

  • The Holy Flame garrison numbered 3,000, defending the island, maintaining order, and collecting harbor taxes 308.
  • Secret Guards maintained an extensive island-wide network and eliminated numerous foreign spies 410.
  • Serious criminals could be sent to Dreamfyre Island or condemned to the saltworks. At least one thousand people received salt-slave sentences within six months; their descendants inherited that status 199 308.
  • Gourd Bay, the secret treasury, and the Dragonpit were particularly closely guarded 410.

Holy Flame Fleet

  • The island possessed the Seven Kingdoms’ largest fleet, including more than 300 large seagoing ships, while publicly acknowledging only slightly more than one hundred. Other vessels were registered under House Tarth or disguised as merchant fleets 229.
  • Captures from the Triarchy and Purple Fleet created a shortage of trained sailors and naval soldiers. Danyla recruited several thousand mercenaries and sailors through Braavosi contacts 301.
  • In the Bay of Myr, telescopes supported coordination through thick smoke, while long-range volleys of Caltrop Dragonfire Bombs devastated the opposing fleet 412.
  • After Aurelion I divided the fleet into regional commands, its strongest contingent remained based at Holy Flame Island 597.
