Background / History
Staying on Dragonstone
Viserys arrives on Dragonstone with Aemma for Baelon’s funeral. The couple already have a close, affectionate relationship with their cousin Danyla. After two miscarriages, Aemma agrees to remain on the island at Danyla’s suggestion, hoping its conditions will help her deliver a healthy child. Viserys, who strongly desires a male heir, supports the decision 6.
Following Danyla’s wager with Borros, Viserys congratulates her on winning ten ships but warns that conspicuous wealth and strength can provoke resentment. He advises her to consider reputation, relationships, and political control rather than relying on displays of force 11.
Danyla subsequently urges him to claim the riderless Vhagar, both to prepare for a possible succession and to prevent House Velaryon from gaining her. Viserys refuses another mount out of attachment to Balerion and tells Danyla not to discuss succession where others might overhear 12.
Adopting Danyla
King Jaehaerys orders Viserys and Aemma to adopt Danyla and take responsibility for arranging her marriage. Having already treated her as their own daughter, they happily agree. The adoption also serves Jaehaerys’s intention to discourage Daemon’s pursuit of her 16 17.
Viserys privately resolves to try taming Vhagar so that he can protect Danyla from Cannibal. During the family’s subsequent stay, he joins orchard picnics, sightseeing flights, and visits to the three wild young dragons. He names the green hatchling Vhagar, after the dragon of the Conquest 16 19 20 22.
Although identified as Rhaenys’s strongest rival for the throne, Viserys initially remains disengaged from the political contest. While Corlys cultivates noble support, Viserys concentrates on Aemma’s pregnancy and the possibility of a son 22.
Cannibal’s Attack and Vhagar’s Acceptance
When Cannibal attacks again, the Dragon Guards escort Viserys, Aemma, and the others into a cave. Viserys reassures his wife that Dreamfyre can fight or escape, but watching Danyla face danger without being able to help strengthens his determination to ride again. He also becomes furious at Daemon for failing to appear with his dragon 24.
After Dreamfyre and Sheepstealer drive Cannibal into retreat, Vhagar ambushes and incapacitates him. Viserys then approaches Vhagar with roasted goats and successfully claims her. His first flight renews his pride and ambition, giving him the means to defend his family rather than remain a helpless spectator 25 26.
When Rhaenys arrives, Viserys explicitly credits Danyla and Dreamfyre with the greatest contribution to the victory. He later beats Daemon for abandoning his protective duties, then accepts his gifts to the girls while warning him against further negligence 26 27.
Family Affairs and the Tourney
Viserys initially wants Danyla to entrust Myracis and the three young dragons to the Dragonkeepers. He drops the proposal after seeing how effectively she commands them and recognizing the political difference between dragons held by his immediate family and those available to the wider house 33.
With young nobles gathering on Dragonstone, he supports Rhaenyra’s proposal for a tourney. Concerned about its expense and manpower, he accepts Danyla’s offer to supply both in return for eighty percent of the revenue. He also accepts discreet betting, but objects to allowing strangers to approach or ride the dragons 35 36 40 41.
After Rhaenyra admits spreading an embellished story about Danyla and the Manderly brothers, Viserys and Aemma agree to supervise the girls more strictly and replace Rhaenyra’s maids. When Rhaenyra later rejects Danyla’s jewelry gift, Viserys thanks Danyla for his own presents and tries to soothe her by attributing Rhaenyra’s behavior to jealousy 48 49 50.
He remains on Dragonstone awaiting Aemma’s delivery even as Corlys and Daemon cultivate political connections in King’s Landing. Danyla later warns Jaehaerys that choosing either Viserys or Rhaenys without addressing future inheritance disputes could divide the Targaryens and Velaryons 62 70.
When Aemma complains that their daughters are too concerned with earning money, Viserys defends the value of wealth and strength. He also arranges a banquet for the nobles on Dragonstone as Danyla and Rhaenyra reconcile 87.
The Long Night and Appointment as Hand
During Danyla’s disappearance, Viserys and Daemon search for her on both sides of the Wall. Anxiety leaves Viserys unable to eat properly, and he becomes almost unrecognizably thin within half a month. They continue searching until Jaehaerys orders them back to King’s Landing as the Long Night and blizzards plunge the realm into crisis 198.
Jaehaerys appoints Viserys Hand of the King, with Daemon commanding the King’s Landing Garrison and Lord Redwyne becoming Master of Ships. Under the king’s personal guidance, Viserys becomes increasingly proficient in affairs of state. His elevation makes Jaehaerys’s preference for him as successor apparent, provoking resentment from Rhaenys and Corlys 198 200.
The king dispatches Viserys and Daemon on their dragons to collect grain and the Long Night tax from the Reach and Stormlands. While awaiting Danyla’s return and Aemma’s delivery, Viserys and Aemma notice that the continuous snow has not brought the expected degree of cold. Viserys expresses pride in Danyla’s service to the realm but struggles to contain his grief over her absence 200.
Danyla returns during Aemma’s labor. Viserys immediately embraces her and weeps with relief 206.
Vinylla and Senylla
Aemma safely gives birth to Vinylla, a healthy silver-haired, purple-eyed daughter. Viserys welcomes her without disappointment that she is not a boy. He and Aemma had previously agreed to call the child Baelon if male and Vinylla if female 207.
On learning that Janna has also given birth to Daemon’s daughter, Danyla proposes raising that child as Vinylla’s younger twin sister. Viserys is conflicted because the arrangement challenges Westerosi traditions concerning royal status and would require providing a dragon egg to a bastard. Nevertheless, after discussing the matter with Aemma and hearing Rhaenyra’s support, he agrees. Janna’s daughter Senyra is brought to Dragonstone and raised as Senylla 207.
Viserys places a white dragon egg with silver markings in Vinylla’s cradle, replacing an earlier egg that had been stolen. Rhaenyra goes to choose another egg for Senylla 207.
Succession Signals and Withdrawal from Court
Viserys warmly reunites with his closest childhood friend, Lord Lyonel Strong of Harrenhal, who brings his household to King’s Landing. The two have maintained their friendship through correspondence despite Lyonel’s departure from court years earlier 224.
Jaehaerys bestows Blackfyre and the Black Flame Armor on Viserys after giving Dark Sister to Rhaenyra. The gifts are nearly equivalent to publicly declaring Viserys heir apparent, although the king deliberately delays a formal proclamation to give him time to consolidate his position and expose hostile factions. Boremund and Borros nearly object but fall silent on seeing Daemon with Cold Night. Bennard subsequently accepts Danyla’s recommendation to serve as Viserys’s cupbearer 227.
Viserys and Rhaenyra help oversee the expansion of the Dragonpit using paid volunteer labor 240.
Angered by the prospect of Vaegon and his family returning to the Royal House, Viserys takes his wife and children back to Dragonstone. He recognizes that reinstating an oathbreaking maester could worsen the existing unrest, even though he is not particularly attached to the Iron Throne 304.
During a family discussion, he asks whether a king unable to protect his own family can protect the realm. Danyla argues that royal responsibility sometimes requires choosing between authority and family affection, while Aemma reassures him that he would be a good king. Viserys remains opposed to Vaegon’s restoration but asks Rhaenyra not to insult their blood relatives. The discussion ends with the family of six sharing dinner 307.
The Great Dragon Battles
Viserys participates in the conflict with the Red Princess. After wounded Vhagar catches up with her, Danyla and Dreamfyre join the battle and pursue the enemy into the Mountains of the Moon. With their mounts too exhausted for sustained high-speed flight, Viserys and Rhaenys descend toward the Green Fork, where they find Myracis, wounded Antheros, and the incapacitated Purple Prince 337.
Worry for Danyla keeps Viserys awake for most of the following night. Myracis catches fish for him and Rhaenys while they wait 339.
Viserys, Daemon, and the great dragons bring the dead dragons to camp and guard the Purple Prince. When Danyla brings Laena to reunite with Rhaenys, Viserys comforts his cousin after she learns of Laenor’s death. He also tries to stop Danyla from approaching the wounded Purple Prince, warning that a wild dragon is unlike those she raised herself 341.
War and Reconstruction in Dorne
News of an assassination attempt against Danyla initially makes Viserys want to attack Sunspear immediately. Her secret letter calms him, and he instead returns to Dragonstone and takes his family into hiding across the Narrow Sea 361.
During the campaign, Viserys and Rhaenyra chant blood sacrifice spells as Vhagar and Syrax destroy the Vale River fortress tower and burn the Dornish camp. Their attack enables Lord Swann’s Stormlands army to secure the crossing and advance toward Wyl 364.
Danyla later finds the family in Sevan City and explains the assassination attempt and her plans for retaliation. Viserys and Aemma worry about the cost of war, but support her after recalling Dorne’s earlier crimes against the Reach. Viserys emphasizes that their dragons now greatly exceed the strength available during the Conquest. He approves Danyla’s detailed plan to take half of Dorne without deepening the hatred of its entire population 366 367.
Viserys works with Vhagar on the grand canal project. Their prolonged cooperation deepens their mental bond. When excavation southwest of Tor, near the source of the Greenblood, reveals a gold mine, he summons Lord Tarly to seal off the surrounding area before Danyla arrives with prospecting maesters 404.
After learning of Danyla’s pregnancy by Daemon, Viserys flies into a rage. He first destroys Godsgrace, reducing the city to scorched earth while chanting blood sacrifice spells. The sacrifice of its tens of thousands of inhabitants supplies magical energy that intensifies his frenzy and refreshes Vhagar. He then flies to Oldstones and attacks Daemon 405 406.
Danyla’s Pregnancy and the Family’s Changing Roles
Viserys severely beats Daemon for failing to take responsibility for Danyla before her pregnancy became impossible to conceal. He refuses to trust Daemon’s promises of love and fidelity, then departs for Dorne. Daemon follows, and the next day the two approach Danyla to discuss marriage 406.
Viserys returns with Daemon and Rhaenyra to find Danyla laboring in a blazing pyre. He shares in the family’s celebration after Aurelion and Isilia are born, before Danyla realizes a third child remains to be delivered 421.
After the triplets’ birth, Viserys and Daemon search unsuccessfully for the hatchling from the shattered black egg. Viserys names their youngest son Otheryon 423.
Viserys introduces Rhaenyra to the eldest son of Lord Strong, leading to their marriage. He also recommends Lord Strong to replace him as Hand of the King. Having left the center of royal power, Viserys and Rhaenyra enjoy greater personal freedom than in the original course of history 425.
The Frost Dragon Battle and Danyla’s Poisoning
Viserys rides Vhagar in the battle against the Frost Dragon, wearing his Enchanted Dragon Wings Cloak against fire and cold. The Frost Dragon throws Vhagar down and coats her in ice with a blast of extreme cold. Despite the cloak, Viserys suffers severe freezing; Hognara subsequently melts the ice on Vhagar 436.
Viserys remains unconscious for several days. Upon awakening and learning that Danyla has been poisoned, he rides Vhagar to gather almost every renowned maester in the North. He conceals the severity of his own condition while continuing to seek a cure for her 437.
When the maesters cannot counter the unknown poison, a Greenseer applies glowing Moontear Moss to Danyla’s wound. Viserys draws his sword as the treatment makes her convulse 437.
Vhagar’s death is mentioned later, when young dragons hatched from eggs she laid shortly before dying are described as commemorations of her. This ends Viserys’s partnership with the dragon of the Conquest 464.
Appearance
- Build: Tall, slightly plump, and still in his physical prime when he claims Vhagar 26.
- Looks: Handsome, with the striking appearance associated with House Targaryen 26.
- Facial hair: Has a beard, which he strokes while considering the tourney’s costs 40.
- Bearing: Usually mild-mannered and refined; when approaching Vhagar, he displays unusual composure, resolve, and tenacity 25.
- Weight loss: Becomes almost unrecognizably thin while searching for Danyla. He regains some weight afterward but remains noticeably leaner and is described as more handsome 198 200 206.
- Later physique: Half a year of physical labor in Dorne transforms his slightly pudgy body into solid muscle, giving considerable force to his punches and kicks 406.
- Battle injuries: Severe cold exposure during the Frost Dragon battle leaves him unconscious for several days and in poor physical condition afterward 436 437.
Personality
Viserys is gentle, affectionate, and inclined toward patient guidance. He and Aemma allow the girls considerable freedom, believing that royal children should have room to live as they please. His modest personal desires also leave him slow to build a substantial circle of capable, loyal followers 13 16.
His softness does not prevent forceful reactions when relatives cross boundaries. He punches Daemon for insulting Lady Royce, throws a silver cup at him after an obscene remark about Danyla, and later beats him for neglecting the family during Cannibal’s attack 9 18 26 27.
Viserys understands political caution even when he does not actively pursue power. He warns Danyla against careless trust, unnecessary offense, and public succession talk. Claiming Vhagar reveals a more determined side of him and rekindles ambition that had previously been overshadowed by concern for Aemma and their unborn child 11 12 22 26.
Family affection remains stronger than his attachment to royal authority. Although he opposes Vaegon’s restoration, he sympathizes with Jaehaerys’s desire to forgive his surviving children and insists that their kinship still deserves respect. He is also a keen judge of people, watching Danyla closely to determine whether she is genuinely unworried 304 307.
His earlier desire for a son does not prevent him from welcoming Vinylla wholeheartedly. He also accepts Senylla into his household despite reservations about tradition and the political weight of recognizing a royal princess 207.
His protectiveness can become extreme violence. Although normally inclined toward peaceful solutions, he supports war after the attempt on Danyla’s life. His later fury over her pregnancy leads to the destruction of Godsgrace, with blood sacrifice magic further intensifying his rage 366 405 406.
