Power Progression
Ghost gods do not share a single documented sequence of cultivation realms. The following are observed transformations and advancement attempts by particular individuals or groups.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Humans granted ghost-god powers | 340 341 | Divine Emperor Heart draws humans into the Underworld through their dreams and grants them ghost-god powers. These intruders are stronger than ordinary ghost gods. |
| Stone Bull Ghost God’s accelerated growth | 609 610 | After entering the Second Layer and guarding Wang Quan’s Manor, he grows more than a zhang in three to five days. Previously, gaining a zhang while refining luminous pearls took roughly ten thousand years. |
| Second Layer Ghost Gods transformed by the Third Layer | 804 | Twelve ghost gods leave the sheltered region beneath blue skies and white clouds. The true Third Layer enlarges their bodies, strengthens their foundations, and adapts them to its environment. |
| Petrification while pursuing Innate Ghost God status | 816 817 | Second Layer Ghost Gods turn to stone to guard safe zones, strengthen their foundations, and help revive their world. Their stated chance of becoming Innate Ghost Gods is one percent; no successful transformation is shown in these passages. |
Origins and Classification
“Ghost God” covers beings with different origins rather than one uniform species or power level 298 334.
| Category | Origin and Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Native ghost gods | Underworld natives, distinguished from ghost gods transformed from human cultivators 334 340. |
| Acquired ghost gods | Soft Bristle identifies himself as a ghost god who was not born of heaven and earth, and admits he is not among the strongest acquired ghost gods 298. |
| Ghost gods formed from deceased cultivators | Some cultivators’ Primordial Spirits and Dharma Forms fall into the Underworld after death and become ghost gods. They can equal or exceed the strength of ghost gods born of heaven and earth 334. |
| Ghost gods born of heaven and earth | Their birthplaces include strange regions formed after exceptional Purple Mansion and Golden Core cultivators perish. These regions are embryonic blessed lands; some ghost gods born there are those cultivators living a second life 334. |
| Innate Ghost Gods | Ghost gods born of heaven and earth who awaken memories of their previous lives. They can travel freely between yin and yang and are described as far stronger than other kinds of ghost god 334. |
| Bloodline Ghost Gods and descendants | Underworld beings identified through inherited ghost-god bloodlines. Daoist Two Ravens belongs to the Death-Heralding Lineage, while the Wild Ox Ghost God identifies himself with the Nine-Bend Divine Ox lineage 258 260 604. |
- Ghost-god ancestry does not guarantee privilege: descendants can be treated as peasants, barred from a residence’s main entrance, or offered employment as doormen 260.
- Innate Ghost Gods are not synonymous with Innate Gods and Devils: the Second Layer Ghost Gods explicitly distinguish their desired advancement from becoming Innate Gods and Devils 839.
- Human transformation has more than one route: Divine Emperor Heart’s empowerment of living humans is separate from the postmortem transformations recorded in Wang Quan’s research 334 341.
Appearance
- Enormous bodies: many stand as tall as high-rises or mountains. The Third Layer’s native ghost gods dwarf visiting Second Layer Ghost Gods 340 805.
- Varied forms: examples include animal-headed humanoids, a turtle-backed crane, hundred-armed and thousand-headed giants, oversized spirit monsters, wind, and fire 441 795 807.
- Changeable size: individuals can shrink into ordinary-looking forms, although the First Layer Ghost Gods guarding the Manor remain over ten meters tall even after shrinking 602 630 760.
- Living entourages: ghosts, monsters, and descendants may shelter among a ghost god’s hair, mane, or body, emerging to scout or fight 649 738 795.
- Exceptions to giant stature: Frost Ice Ghost God is only palm-sized, with cicada wings, luxurious clothing, and a crown 808.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Power and Bodily Transformation
Ghost gods can alter their size, reshape their bodies, and turn body parts into tools or separate manifestations.
- Soft Bristle draws a blade from his spine and turns a fallen hair into a road that transports Wang Quan across numerous regions 260 298.
- A delivery ghost god severs a finger and transforms it into a black-robed cultivator capable of harvesting New-Method Golden Cores 739.
- The Wild Ox Ghost God survives beheading and replaces his destroyed head with stone; his brain subsequently begins growing again 605 609.
- Ghost gods can remain alive despite severe bodily destruction, including White Bone Ghost God’s prolonged imprisonment in a boiling pot 802.
- Recovery has limits: flesh and soul burned through certain secret arts are permanently expended and require an extremely long time to restore 816.
Dharma Power and Divine Abilities
Their powers vary substantially between individuals.
- Human ghost gods manifest solid gazes, visible sound-wave attacks, fiery escape methods, and transformations into starlight 340 341.
- The Wild Ox Ghost God produces black fire from his horns, smoke from his tail, and lava beneath his feet 604.
- Other ghost gods employ river- and wheel-like Divine Abilities, Ice Soul Frostlight, and techniques taught by Wang Quan 650 651.
- Some animate stone rings and ribbons into smaller ghost-god forms, which consume other creatures and develop flesh, bones, internal landscapes, and temples 292.
- The power emitted by the ghost gods confronting Wang Quan in City No. 95 is sufficient to shatter an ordinary Foundation Establishment cultivator’s soul 294.
Travel, Transport, and Retinues
- Ghost gods can enter the Present World through ritual passages. Wang Quan summons a group along an incense chain using the Five-Colored Earth Altar 363.
- Scouting groups carry and release large numbers of subordinate ghosts and monsters to map terrain, earth veins, and qi veins 680.
- One such group travels several times faster than Grotto Heaven cultivators 680.
- The twelve ghost gods exploring the Third Layer carry unusual subordinate creatures to confront supernatural anomalies, as well as building materials stored within their bodies 795 802 804.
Petrification and Safe-Zone Guardianship
Turning to stone allows ghost gods to conserve themselves while guarding safe zones.
- Petrification reduces vitality consumption to a minimum; the Second Layer Ghost Gods describe a year passing like a day 816.
- Other ghost gods reinforce the stone guardians by carving markings onto them, sometimes burning portions of their own flesh and souls to empower the work 816.
- Guarding safe zones offers a chance to strengthen their foundations, revive the Second Layer, and become Innate Ghost Gods 816.
- Their sleep may last until the approaching Era Cataclysm or, if they do not awaken then, at least an entire era 817.
Craftsmanship and Large-Scale Labor
- Ghost gods connect Three-Legged Cauldron Mountain to Earth Veins, hold it in place, and assist Wang Quan’s Golden Core refinement with hammering, Divine Abilities, blood, and vitality 650 651.
- They complete heavy material-processing tasks in a few blows that take ordinary ghosts days of work 839.
- They are less suited to delicate work, which they leave to smaller ghosts and other living beings 839.
Relative Strength and Limitations
Differences Between Regions
| Region | Documented Conditions |
|---|---|
| First Layer: outer rings | Wild ghost gods are rare around Ring No. 95. Even powerful residents can be subordinate laborers of the Ghost Emperors 604 630. |
| First Layer: inner rings | Ghost gods become increasingly numerous toward Emperor’s Tomb City’s imperial capital. Those encountered in City No. 11 overpower and humiliate Ox Head and Horse Face 630. |
| Second Layer | Its ghost gods are much more formidable than the First Layer’s. Daoist Black Smoke warns that Wang Quan could have become part of their memories without his exceptional foundations and luck 609. |
| Third Layer | Native ghost gods possess much deeper foundations than the twelve visitors from the Second Layer. Their overwhelming numbers force the visitors to retreat despite their recent strengthening 804 805 807. |
Known Vulnerabilities
- Sky Patrol Magic Treasures: ordinary ghost gods can be immobilized or annihilated by these battlefield weapons. Wang Quan destroys Northern Deep City and its ancestral ghost gods with one 442 448.
- Exceptional resistance: Frost Ice Ghost God claims that a previously summoned treasure assembled from twelfth-tier Magic Treasures merely left lumps on her head. Her resistance is not representative of ordinary ghost gods 809.
- Residence defenses: Wang Quan’s authority and Yin Virtue-powered Bull-Head Towers defeat, impale, and devour the human ghost gods occupying Residence No. 95 340 341.
- Evil contamination: prolonged combat in Evil Worlds can contaminate ghost gods. Safe zones and Ying Jiaren’s Fire Mulberry Tree provide cleansing and recovery 449 450.
- Hostile Underworld regions: Emperor’s Tomb City’s deeper alleys are dangerous enough to kill ghost gods 255.
- Limited resources: many ghost gods are poor and lack high-tier Magic Treasures 447.
Wang Quan’s lantern test also demonstrates their durability: a treasure that destroys lesser ghosts causes a ragged ghost god intense pain but only superficial injury 753 754.
Society and Economy
Rule and Hierarchy
- Ghost gods patrol cities, lead armies, oversee laborers, and establish settlements in which they intend to rule over ordinary inhabitants 257 361 558 649.
- Some maintain ancestral lineages linking the Present World and Underworld. Northern Deep’s deceased ancestors prepare to defend their lineage when its living descendants are attacked 441 442.
- Ghost Emperors impose labor and tribute obligations. Several ghost gods describe refining luminous pearls and gems under exhausting conditions 610 650 753.
- Escaping such service does not necessarily make a ghost god benevolent: the ragged ghost god openly wants freedom so he can become a local tyrant 753.
- Third Layer ghost gods celebrate having no Ghost Emperors above them and resist changes to the Underworld they control 805.
Employment and Payment
- Ying Jiaren recruits Underworld ghost gods to work in the Present World in exchange for resources and access to spirit monsters 363.
- The Dao Court employs ghost gods as Golden Core couriers. Couriers caught stealing from their delivery baskets are seized as research materials; those proven to have harvested only wild cores are released 738 739.
- Green Fly Coins can purchase ghost-god labor. Wang Quan later contracts for a workforce that must remain at no fewer than 1,001 ghost gods 839.
- A Ghost Emperor offers purchasable slots to become Innate Ghost Gods, motivating ghost gods to seek paid work. Wang Quan questions the offer’s authenticity; no guaranteed advancement is demonstrated 839.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Emperor’s Tomb City
Wang Quan initially encounters ghost gods as inspectors, travelers, and patrol guards. Soft Bristle then hires him to locate a statue associated with the former Western Ghost Emperor, providing residence keys as payment. The arrangement ends with Ghost Emperor Heart devouring Soft Bristle with Wang Quan’s help 255 257 260 342.
After Wang Quan demonstrates access to the Sky Patrol Magic Treasure and threatens to summon the Drowning Dao Court, City No. 95’s ghost gods abandon their confrontation and offer friendship tokens. More than a hundred later flee with the city lord, carrying his residence out of the city; Wang Quan becomes the new city lord 294 348.
Northern Deep Lineage
Northern Deep’s ancestral ghost gods become targets during Wang Quan’s retaliation against the lineage. Their worshipped Great One statue consumes nine of them as incense to escape the Sky Patrol Magic Treasure. Wang Quan forces the survivors to power a pursuit ritual before destroying Northern Deep City 441 442 444 448.
Revival of the Second Layer
After entering a region that retraces its past, Wang Quan revives Second Layer Ghost Gods ahead of time and teaches them scriptures. They ask how to repay him. Their superiority over First Layer ghost gods is demonstrated when they beat and behead the visiting Wild Ox Ghost God 583 603 605.
Wang Quan subsequently works with twelve Second Layer Ghost Gods to explore the Third Layer and establish a safe zone. Their attempt to confront the native ghost gods fails because of the locals’ superior foundations and overwhelming numbers 795 796 804 805.
Guardians Across Worlds
The Second Layer Ghost Gods ultimately choose safe-zone guardianship over accompanying Wang Quan into the Fourth Layer. Thirty-six million plan to turn to stone, seeking a chance to become Innate Ghost Gods while helping their world’s sun revive 816.
Because one safe zone cannot accommodate them all, Wang Quan directs them to safe zones in the Mortal World and the Second and Third Layer Evil Worlds. Their arrival relieves Dao Seal Cultivators of guard duties, while the ghost gods pledge to defend the territories and express gratitude toward Wang Quan 816 817.
