Personality

Yuanshi prioritizes the Chan Sect’s dominance over cooperation with Tongtian. He regards the Interception Sect’s large membership as a threat to his own sect’s growth and presents sacrificing it to the calamity as an impartial decision. His contempt for its nonhuman disciples is explicit: he repeatedly calls them “fur-clad, horn-bearing creatures” and describes the tribulation as a means of cleansing their ranks 7 41 42.

He takes Tongtian’s tolerance for granted, expecting brotherly affection and loyalty to the Mystic Gate to outweigh the danger to Tongtian’s disciples. When Tongtian refuses to support him, Yuanshi alternates between accusations, threats, and a rare conciliatory appeal. Even after acknowledging that his past methods were improper, he maintains that he acted in Tongtian’s best interests 44 45 46.

Yuanshi is deeply concerned with authority and public dignity. He wants their battle to establish his absolute authority as the elder brother, but resorts to attacking Tongtian from behind when direct confrontation proves unsuccessful 48 49.

His pride extends to his selection of disciples. He meticulously scrutinizes their origins and talent, confidently declaring that his Twelve Golden Immortals can reunite the Interception Sect without a Saint’s personal intervention. Learning that his disciples have already suffered crushing defeats humiliates him, particularly because he has just boasted about them to Laozi 52 54.

Yuanshi repeatedly attributes setbacks to Tongtian’s supposed schemes rather than accepting the strength of the Interception Sect’s disciples. After Qiongxiao destroys his incarnation, he blames Tongtian in part because acknowledging an independent defeat by a disciple would be intolerably embarrassing 58. He also welcomes the concealment of Heavenly Secrets surrounding his sect’s humiliation because it limits the damage to his reputation 93.

He enjoys extravagance and spends numerous rare materials rebuilding the Jade Void Palace. Even this costly replacement disappoints him because he cannot obtain enough dragon crystal to match the original 95.

Despite his arrogance, Yuanshi can recognize immediate danger and seek protection or assistance. He appeals to Laozi when trapped in Lu Feng’s formations, sacrifices treasures to survive the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, and invokes Hongjun’s disapproval when Tongtian threatens his life 70 126 159. His Dao heart also remains sufficiently steadfast that, after raging over his sudden loss of cultivation, he resumes cultivating rather than abandoning recovery 201.

Abilities & Skills

Saint-Level Combat

  • Exchanges hundreds of blows with Tongtian in the depths of Chaos 49.
  • Their colliding attacks shatter the surrounding space. They fight outside the Primordial World because a battle there could kill or injure more than half its living beings 48 49.
  • Despite attacking at full strength, he is outmatched by Tongtian’s swordsmanship and wounded through his defenses 49 50.
  • Can travel across the Primordial World almost instantaneously and project Saintly might powerful enough to disturb the surrounding heaven and earth 123.
  • Uses the Laws of the Sage Dao to empower the Three Treasures Jade Ruyi and the Pangu Banner 124 126.
  • Can expend his blood essence to strengthen the Pangu Banner, accepting the risk of grievous injury in an attempt to escape Tongtian’s formation 126.

Heavenly Dao Aura

  • Displays an aura associated with the Heavenly Dao that strengthens him during the battle with Tongtian 50.
  • Its appearance surprises the observing Saints; Laozi does not know when Yuanshi gained insight into it 50.
  • The enhancement cannot prevent Tongtian’s lotus-empowered sword strike from breaking through his defenses 50.

Divination and Spiritual Detection

  • Senses interference with the formation protecting the Jade Void Palace while he is in Zixiao Palace 32.
  • Attempts to divine the intruder’s identity, but concealed Heavenly Secrets prevent him from identifying the culprit 32.
  • Accuses the Interception Sect based on his belief that its members could possess the necessary concealment ability, rather than a successful divination 32.
  • Participates in identifying Jiang Shang’s location near Golden Ao Island, prompting his attempt to reclaim the man chosen by destiny 123.

Formations

  • Places a Saint-level formation on the Jade Void Palace’s name plaque 32.
  • His formation attainments are described as unimpressive; Golden Hoop Immortal can break the formation despite some difficulty 32.
  • His avatar’s Pangu Banner attacks fail against Lu Feng’s devouring formation because it absorbs the spiritual power carried by the attacks 65 66.
  • Uses the Heaven-Burning Jade Fan and his power of law against the formation, briefly making it tremble and weakening its devouring force 66 67.
  • Later breaks one of Lu Feng’s five successive Restraining Formations with the Pangu Banner, but the remaining layers delay him long enough for Tongtian to complete the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation 124.

Avatars and Incarnations

  • Can manifest avatars to operate in the Primordial World while his true body remains in Chaos 52 58.
  • His first incarnation withstands Qiongxiao’s devouring law beneath a layer of golden light, but is destroyed by her sword attack 57 58.
  • After that loss, he creates a more powerful replacement avatar and equips it with major treasures for the expedition to Golden Ao Island 59 66.
  • Avatar destruction returns his consciousness to his true body, but does not spare him the humiliation or material losses associated with defeat 58 72 73.

Pangu Banner Mastery

  • Is proficient in the banner’s profound meaning of destruction and possesses some understanding of its profound meaning of establishment 156.
  • Has not comprehended its profound meanings of restraint and annihilation despite possessing it for a long time 156.
  • Initially assumes Tongtian cannot unleash the stolen banner’s true power and is shocked when Tongtian demonstrates mastery of destruction 156.

World Origin Power Absorption

  • Overwhelms the inhabitants of a small world in Chaos, plunders its resources, and forcibly absorbs its World Origin Power at the source 201.
  • Achieves a breakthrough after consuming only a small portion of that power 201.
  • Cannot resist the distant pressure that subsequently shatters his manifested Dao. He nevertheless retains the ability to cultivate and attempts to use the remaining origin power to restore his lost realm 201.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Pangu Banner — His companion treasure, an Innate Supreme Treasure and one of the three great heaven-opening treasures. It appears behind him during his battle with Tongtian and radiates a chilling, baleful aura as the fight intensifies 49 50 66 124. His avatar later loses treasures in Lu Feng’s formations, but Yuanshi is again shown wielding the banner during his attempt to reclaim Jiang Shang 72 124. Lu Feng then steals it and severs Yuanshi’s connection to it using Great Dao-level artifact-refining techniques. Tongtian subsequently wields it against Yuanshi 127 156 159.
  • Three Treasures Jade Ruyi — Emits three-colored light and serves both offensive and defensive purposes. Yuanshi directs it to attack Tongtian from behind, then uses it to protect himself; Tongtian’s sword attacks overcome its defenses 49 50. Later generates azure attacks against Lu Feng and a protective barrier within the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. It withstands the formation better than several of Yuanshi’s other treasures 124 126.
  • Jade Void Palace — His residence and a symbol of both his dignity and the Chan Sect’s prestige. Golden Hoop Immortal, Tiger Monster, and Snake Monster remove it and strip the surrounding grounds 32 33. Yuanshi later rebuilds it with rare materials, although the replacement lacks the original’s quantity of dragon crystal 95.
  • Jade Void Palace Signboard — Originally protected by his Saint-level formation. After its theft, Lu Feng uses the signboard to club him from behind while stealing the Pangu Banner, then sits on it while recovering 32 127.
  • Heaven-Burning Jade Fan — A supreme-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure obtained at the Treasure Distribution Cliff. Yuanshi’s avatar uses it to spread flames through Lu Feng’s formation and defend himself at its core. The expedition ends with the avatars’ destruction and the loss of their treasures 66 67 70 72 73.
  • Investiture of the Gods List — Entrusted to him by Hongjun after the Saints fill its three hundred and sixty-five positions. Tongtian regards this custody as an advantage for Yuanshi’s faction 87. Hongjun later offers to hand the list and God-Beating Whip to Lu Feng in exchange for Yuanshi’s release 131.
  • God-Beating Whip — An instrument of the tribulation that restrains those occupying divine positions. Hongjun places it in Yuanshi’s keeping until the person chosen by destiny appears. It measures three feet, six inches, and five divisions, with twenty-one segments bearing four talisman seals each 87.
  • Hongjun’s Secret-Realm Treasure — A purple gateway refined by Hongjun, containing a secret realm with formations, laws, and the Heavenly Dao’s blessing. Yuanshi receives it and opens it to strengthen the Three Teachings’ disciples before their campaign against the Interception Sect 92 95 101.
  • Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner — A defensive treasure used alongside the Jade Ruyi inside the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. It blocks one of the formation’s major attacks and shows no signs of cracking while weaker treasures fail 126.
  • Taiji Talisman Seal — A supreme-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure sacrificed to withstand the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. It shatters under the strain; Lu Feng subsequently offers its damaged remains to Tongtian 126 127.
  • Qiankun Fan — Another supreme-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure used to block the sword formation. It is destroyed shortly after the Taiji Talisman Seal, and Lu Feng collects its damaged remains 126 127.
  • Monster-Suppressing Pagoda — Brought out as a replacement defense after the Taiji Talisman Seal fails. It also shatters, leaving Yuanshi increasingly exposed 126 127.
  • Heaven-Suppressing Coffin — A Heavenly Dao Fiendish Treasure that releases immense baleful energy and establishes a domain in which Saint methods and Sage Dao principles cannot be used. Yuanshi employs it against Tongtian and as a second defensive line after the Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud weakens. It remains behind after his death 156 159.
  • Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud — A Heavenly Dao defensive treasure said to have formed from the vast righteous qi in Pangu’s heart. It manifests five-colored radiance, a primordial chaos world, celestial bodies, golden lamps, lotuses, garlands, and pearls. It initially blocks the Six Souls Banner and Pangu Banner, but repeated destruction attacks breach much of its protection. The cloud flies away after Yuanshi is slain 156 159.

Relationships

  • Tongtian — Younger brother and fellow Saint of the Mystic Gate. Yuanshi’s attempt to sacrifice the Interception Sect destroys Tongtian’s willingness to defer to him and culminates in open combat 42 44 48. Tongtian later formally severs ties with Yuanshi and Laozi through an oath witnessed by the Heavenly Dao, declaring that they will meet as enemies rather than brothers 89 90. Their conflict ultimately leads to Tongtian killing Yuanshi outside Golden Ao Island 159.
  • Taishang Laozi — Elder brother and political supporter. Laozi repeatedly favors Yuanshi in disputes with Tongtian and initially predicts that Yuanshi will win their battle 32 46 48. They jointly attempt to reunite the Interception Sect and recruit the Western Saints after their initial failure 52 58. Laozi’s support remains self-interested: he initially stays behind when Yuanshi goes to reclaim Jiang Shang and later occupies Nuwa rather than helping Yuanshi fight the stronger Tongtian 123 153.
  • Hongjun — Teacher and authority over the tribulation deliberations. Hongjun permits the brothers to settle their dispute through battle and later tells Laozi that Yuanshi will not win 42 48 50. He supports a plan to reunite the Interception Sect, entrusts Yuanshi with the Investiture of the Gods List, God-Beating Whip, and secret-realm treasure, and intervenes during the later confrontation over Jiang Shang 51 52 87 92 131. Yuanshi relies heavily on Hongjun’s backing and, after repeated failures, directly asks him to handle the Interception Sect himself 73 74 95.
  • Jieyin and Zhunti — Shifting allies against the Interception Sect. Once that sect becomes ineligible for the calamity, they turn against Yuanshi, nominate the Chan Sect, and mock his treatment of Tongtian 42 43 45. They later join his renewed campaign, although mutual resentment persists after the loss of their avatars and treasures 59 72 73 75. They initially allow Yuanshi to confront Tongtian alone over Jiang Shang, partly welcoming the possibility that injury will weaken him, but ultimately move to intervene when he is in mortal danger 123 125 127.
  • Daoist Randeng — Chan Sect vice leader who invokes Yuanshi’s authority to intimidate Duobao. Randeng later coordinates a denial of the treasure debt so the captives will have an excuse before Yuanshi 26 30. On Yuanshi’s return to Kunlun, he explains the palace theft and the Chan Sect’s defeat. After cultivating in Hongjun’s secret realm, Randeng reaches peak Quasi-Sage, delighting Yuanshi 53 54 132.
  • Golden Hoop Immortal — Interception Sect disciple responsible for breaching Yuanshi’s palace formation and organizing the palace’s theft; Yuanshi cannot divine his identity 32 33.
  • Qiongxiao — Interception Sect disciple who destroys his first incarnation. Yuanshi responds with fury and attributes her strength to Tongtian’s schemes. Her unfamiliar power of law later becomes a subject of his report to Hongjun 57 58 75.
  • Lu Feng — Tongtian’s eldest disciple and a principal source of Yuanshi’s setbacks. His formations destroy Yuanshi’s replacement avatar, and he later traps Yuanshi during the dispute over Jiang Shang, strikes him with the stolen palace signboard, and takes the Pangu Banner 65 66 70 72 124 127.
  • Nuwa — Initially observes his duel with Tongtian and expresses surprise at his strength 48 50. She later sides openly with Tongtian, helps control the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation against Yuanshi’s faction, and opposes the Saints’ attempt to prevent Zhunti’s investiture 91 152.
  • Jiang Shang — The man chosen by destiny, whom Yuanshi considers essential to his plans. Jiang Shang’s arrival at the Interception Sect prompts Yuanshi to go personally to Golden Ao Island to demand his return 123. Yuanshi later attacks him to prevent Zhunti’s true spirit from entering the Investiture of the Gods List 152.
  • Luohu — Target of Hongjun’s expedition, during which Yuanshi dismisses the weak Saints within the Demonic Qi World and searches for its resources. Luohu’s destruction of that world annihilates Yuanshi and the other three Saints 168 176 178.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Theft of the Jade Void Palace

While Yuanshi attends the Saints’ deliberations in Zixiao Palace, Golden Hoop Immortal breaches the final formation protecting his palace. Yuanshi immediately senses the intrusion but cannot identify the thief. He blames the Interception Sect and angrily accuses Tongtian of enjoying his humiliation, although Tongtian is also surprised by the news 32 33.

The palace theft reinforces Yuanshi’s hostility toward the Interception Sect. He subsequently rejects Tongtian’s proposal to unite their sects against the Western Teachings, preferring to remove the Chan Sect’s principal rival instead 41.

When Yuanshi and Laozi later arrive at Kunlun Mountain, they discover the extent of the looting: not only the palace, but also its paving bricks and surrounding spirit herbs are gone. Randeng identifies the Interception Sect as responsible, while another disciple describes a donkey-faced leader accompanied by a Tiger Monster and Snake Monster. Yuanshi demands an explanation for their failure to stop the thieves and is further humiliated to learn how badly his disciples were defeated 53 54.

Yuanshi eventually constructs a new Jade Void Palace at considerable expense. Although he uses many rare materials, he cannot replace the dragon crystal that distinguished the original building 95.

Investiture of the Gods Deliberations

Yuanshi supports assigning the calamity to the Interception Sect, citing its size and indiscriminate acceptance of disciples. Jieyin and Zhunti back him, but Hongjun discovers that the sect has already disbanded and rules it out as a candidate 42 43.

With only the Chan Sect and Western Teachings left under consideration, Yuanshi argues that the West’s smaller population would suffer fewer losses. His former allies reject this reasoning, while Tongtian turns Yuanshi’s own claims about the tribulation being an “opportunity” against him 43 44.

Yuanshi’s apology and appeals to Mystic Gate unity fail to regain Tongtian’s support. He then accuses Tongtian of deliberately disbanding his sect to evade the calamity, bringing their dispute to an open rupture 45 46 47.

In later deliberations, Yuanshi again insists that Interception Sect disciples should fill the list, arguing that his own disciples’ exceptional foundations would be wasted on divine positions. Hongjun instead orders the Three Teachings to fill the list together and prohibits Saints from intervening in the calamity. After all three hundred and sixty-five positions are filled, Hongjun entrusts the list and God-Beating Whip to Yuanshi, pleasing his allies and reinforcing Tongtian’s belief that their teacher favors the opposing faction 86 87.

Defeat in Chaos

After Hongjun authorizes combat, Yuanshi challenges Tongtian to enforce his authority as the elder brother. Tongtian withstands his attacks, counters the Jade Ruyi’s sneak attack with the Qingping Sword, and unleashes thirty-six sword strikes that draw Yuanshi’s golden Saint blood 48 49.

Yuanshi continues fighting with the Heavenly Dao’s aura strengthening him. Nevertheless, Tongtian combines the Qingping Sword, Thirty-Six-Petaled Green Lotus, and Laws of the Sword and Formations in a strike that shatters the Jade Ruyi’s defensive radiance and hits his body, leaving the observers stunned 50.

His defeat is subsequently confirmed by observers in the Primordial World. Zhen Yuanzi is particularly surprised that Tongtian can defeat a Saint of Yuanshi’s standing so quickly 51.

Failed Attempt to Reunite the Interception Sect

Hongjun proposes concealing Tongtian’s perception through the Heavenly Dao while Laozi and Yuanshi use Dharma Bodies to gather the scattered Interception Sect disciples. Reestablishing the sect would make it eligible for the tribulation again. Yuanshi eagerly accepts the plan and initially excludes Jieyin and Zhunti, convinced that he and Laozi require no help 51 52.

After discovering the Chan Sect’s defeats at Kunlun, the two Saints proceed personally. Yuanshi dismisses the danger posed by individual disciples, but Qiongxiao destroys his incarnation with a sword attack. Back in his true body, he blames Tongtian for preparing the disciples’ strength and agrees to recruit the Western Saints 54 55 57 58.

Yuanshi creates a stronger replacement avatar and accompanies Laozi, Jieyin, and Zhunti to Golden Ao Island. His initial attack sends him into Lu Feng’s formation, where the Pangu Banner’s spiritual power is absorbed. He switches to the Heaven-Burning Jade Fan and his power of law, but the layered formations ultimately crush him at their core 59 65 66 67 70.

The other three avatars reach him and attempt a collective escape. Nevertheless, all four lose their avatars and treasures. Yuanshi, having now lost two incarnations in succession, is unwilling to accept the Western Saints’ demands for compensation and is prepared to fight them 70 72.

The four eventually return to Zixiao Palace to report their failure. When Hongjun proposes continuing with the original tribulation arrangements, Yuanshi asks him to handle the Interception Sect personally. During the ensuing discussion, he describes Qiongxiao’s power of law, only for Hongjun to admit that he does not recognize it. Hongjun’s acknowledgment that a disciple killed Yuanshi’s earlier avatar exposes another humiliation to Jieyin and Zhunti 73 74 75.

Severance of Brotherhood and Preparation for War

When Yuanshi’s faction confronts Tongtian over its lost treasures, Tongtian formally severs his ties with Yuanshi and Laozi. The Heavenly Dao witnesses his oath that they will henceforth be enemies rather than brothers. Enraged, Yuanshi urges an immediate attack 89 90.

Yuanshi initially believes four Saints can break the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. Nuwa’s intervention on Tongtian’s side overturns this expectation, forcing the four into retreat until Hongjun orders the fighting to stop. In Zixiao Palace, Hongjun reiterates the prohibition on Saint participation, and the four recognize that their disciples cannot defeat the Interception Sect’s disciples unaided 91.

Hongjun provides a secret-realm treasure to remedy that disadvantage. Yuanshi reassures his followers that signing the Investiture of the Gods List will allow them to send other sects’ disciples through the tribulation, then promises access to the realm. He later opens its purple gateway and explicitly commands the Three Teachings’ disciples to slaughter the Interception Sect and send its members onto the list after their training 92 95 101.

Attempt to Reclaim Jiang Shang

Jiang Shang’s arrival at Golden Ao Island prompts Yuanshi to intervene personally. Considering the man chosen by destiny indispensable, he travels alone while Laozi and the Western Saints remain behind. He accuses Tongtian of stealing Jiang Shang from his sect and demands his return 123.

When Tongtian and Lu Feng mock him by discussing sending a random disciple to oppose him, Yuanshi attacks Lu Feng with the Three Treasures Jade Ruyi. Lu Feng’s successive Restraining Formations prevent his escape while Tongtian completes the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. Its sword qi wounds Yuanshi and severs one of his arms 123 124.

Yuanshi commits numerous treasures to his defense while using the Pangu Banner to attack the formation’s edge. The Taiji Talisman Seal and Qiankun Fan are destroyed, and he brings out the Monster-Suppressing Pagoda to buy more time. He even expends blood essence to strengthen the banner 126.

During the struggle, Lu Feng appears behind him and strikes him with the stolen Jade Void Palace signboard. Lu Feng then takes the Pangu Banner and severs its connection to Yuanshi, preventing its recall. The Monster-Suppressing Pagoda also shatters, and the other three Saints finally move to intervene 127.

Yuanshi remains trapped and increasingly endangered until Hongjun appears. Hongjun offers to hand the Investiture of the Gods List and God-Beating Whip to Lu Feng in exchange for releasing him. Yuanshi is subsequently back at Kunlun Mountain when the secret-realm disciples emerge, rejoicing at the cultivation gains of Randeng, Guangchengzi, and the others 130 131 132.

Investiture War and Death at Tongtian’s Hands

With the Three Teachings assembled at Kunlun Mountain, Yuanshi occupies the central seat of honor because the Chan Sect supplies the main force and its disciples possess the highest cultivation. His Golden Immortals have reached the Quasi-Sage realm, while many third-generation disciples have entered Great Luo. He orders the assembled disciples to destroy the Interception Sect, beginning the war 133.

Yuanshi and Jieyin later agree to withdraw their forces, but the battle has already begun by the time Randeng receives the message. Zhao Gongming gravely wounds Juliusun and Daoist Yu Ding during the fighting 141.

When Zhunti’s true spirit is threatened with entry into the Investiture of the Gods List, Yuanshi joins Laozi and Jieyin in attempting to prevent it. Nuwa and Duobao block the Saints, and Yuanshi attacks Jiang Shang. Tongtian emerges from seclusion at late Saint Realm Tier Eight and confronts him 152 153.

Yuanshi reveals that he has advanced from peak Saint Realm Tier Six to Tier Seven and attacks with the Heaven-Suppressing Coffin. Tongtian counters with the stolen Pangu Banner, demonstrating an understanding of its profound meaning of destruction. When Tongtian inscribes Yuanshi’s name on the Six Souls Banner, Yuanshi summons the Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud to block its death-energy attack 156.

Repeated Pangu Banner attacks eventually breach much of the cloud’s protection. The Six Souls Banner’s death energy tears open Yuanshi’s Heavenly Dao Saint Body and corrodes it, allowing Tongtian to overwhelm him with a further destruction attack. Yuanshi invokes Hongjun’s authority in an attempt to deter the killing, but Tongtian slays him. The Myriad Heavens Auspicious Cloud departs, while the Heaven-Suppressing Coffin remains behind 159.

Expedition Against Luohu

Yuanshi later reappears among the Saints summoned by Hongjun to attack Luohu. Hongjun assigns himself to face Luohu and the four Saints to deal with his subordinates, promising resources capable of assisting their breakthroughs. Yuanshi abandons the idea of inviting Tongtian, and the expedition waits for the injured Saints to recover 168 171.

Within the Demonic Qi World, Yuanshi derides Luohu’s accumulated strength after finding only two Saints at the first stage of the realm. He and the others consider those opponents negligible and begin searching for resources 176.

Luohu instead destroys the Demonic Qi World. The resulting explosions annihilate Yuanshi, Laozi, Jieyin, and Zhunti, although several supreme treasures survive 178.

World Origin Breakthrough and Dao Backlash

Yuanshi is later alive in a small world in Chaos, where his cultivation gives him overwhelming superiority over the native inhabitants. He plunders the world and forcibly absorbs its World Origin Power, anticipating that a breakthrough will let him settle his grievance with Tongtian 201.

After consuming only a small portion of the origin power, he advances to the next realm. His triumph is immediately reversed when an immense distant pressure causes his Dao to manifest and shatter. The backlash makes him spit blood and lowers his realm by two stages 201.

Yuanshi does not understand the source of the calamity, which occurs amid Lu Feng’s overwhelming breakthrough in the Primordial World. After raging at the loss of his hard-won advancement, he resumes cultivating with the remaining World Origin Power, hoping to restore his realm and vowing resentment toward whoever caused the damage 201.
