Nature and Purpose
- Publicly known danger: Dungeons contain magic-enhancing gems and items, but their hazards discourage most people from entering. Underground labyrinths and demons are identified as humanity’s two major threats 1 3.
- Hidden purpose: According to Nightmare, the Five Great Dungeons are prisons and seals containing Outer Gods, dangerous beings from beyond the world whose awakening could destroy it 15.
- Limits of Greg’s knowledge: Greg knows the early layouts and monsters from the original game, but the Outer Gods were absent from its lore. He initially doubts Nightmare’s explanation 15.
The Five Great Dungeons
| Dungeon | Location | Distinguishing Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Glory Kael Magic Academy Dungeon | Beneath Glory Kael Magic Academy | First and most accessible of the five 15. |
| Ducal Dungeon | Beneath the Everfrost Glacier in the northern duchy | Extreme cold and ice monsters 15. |
| Imperial Dungeon | Beneath the Imperial Capital of the Central Empire | Heavily guarded and exceptionally difficult 15. |
| Undersea Dungeon | The deepest trench of the Endless Sea | Severe environmental penalties; reaching it requires exceptional water specialization or special adaptations 15. |
| Demon Realm Dungeon | The heart of Demon territory | Saturated with demonic energy and especially hostile to humans 15. |
- All five are vast, have complex mechanics, and contain monsters whose strength increases exponentially. Before Greg’s transmigration, the game’s forums had no complete clearing guide for any of them 15.
Layout and Environment
First Floor
The first floor contains distinct shallow, middle, and deep regions; its recommended entry level does not reflect the full danger of its deeper areas 44 46.
| Area | Environment | Notable Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Outer / shallow region | Rocky caverns, moss, underground rivers, and narrow paths or stone bridges 1 8 44. | Greg’s initial hunting grounds and campsite; river monsters remain dangerous even near otherwise secure locations 1 2. |
| Passage toward the middle region | Widening paths, more complicated terrain, dimmer luminous moss, and air smelling of stale dust and blood 40. | Blocked by displaced goblins, including an elite shaman normally found deeper inside 40 42. |
| Safe connecting passage | Smooth, arched walls; glowing crystals; dry, clean air; comfortably cool temperatures 43. | Most monsters experience discomfort, aversion, or fear here and generally avoid crossing or lingering 43. |
| Middle region | Caverns with a richer ecosystem and purple, blue, and pale-green luminous fungi and moss 44. | Becomes unnaturally quiet during the monster-repelling device incident 45. |
| Deep region | Cavern halls with ceilings at least twenty to thirty meters high, broad spaces, ledges, slopes, stalactites, and stalagmites 46. | An intricate maze containing aggressive monsters; the missing testers become lost while fleeing through it 46. |
| First-floor boss room | Greg’s intended destination during his clearing attempt 45. | He initially plans to head there without becoming involved in the testers’ predicament 45. |
Greg’s Campsite
- Natural cave: Discovered on Greg’s second day underground. No monsters spawn inside, and its hard ground prevents Horned Rabbits from burrowing up to ambush him 1.
- Riverbank location: The adjacent underground river supplies a washing place but also exposes the camp’s surroundings to aquatic predators 1 2.
- Initial furnishings: A campfire and little else; Greg initially has no bed, furniture, or proper storage and sleeps on his academy coat 10 16.
- Later improvements: Greg installs a waterproof, windproof canvas tent with padding and a low-grade magical barrier. The barrier warns of intrusions and repels weak insects and small monsters, but cannot withstand powerful attacks 31.
Monsters and Hazards
| Monster | Documented Threat or Trait |
|---|---|
| Horned Rabbit | Can burrow beneath explorers and ambush them; Greg uses its meat for food 1. |
| Devil Flower | Vulnerable to weaknesses Greg remembers from the game. Its territory contains salt, and its buds secrete a pepper-like powder 1. |
| Blackwater Octopus | Grabs victims with tentacles and drags them underwater; Greg calls it the leading predator of dungeon newcomers 2. |
| Goblin warriors | Approximately LV15–LV18. Displaced goblins gather near the route into the middle region and attack with weapons, arrows, and thrown stones 40. |
| Goblin shaman | A LV23 elite normally restricted to the first floor’s deep region. One appears near the shallow-region boundary and attempts to kill Sylvia with magic 41 42. |
| Spineback Lizard | Uses lunging attacks, claws, and venom. Greg exploits its exposed throat and eye 49. |
| Mossrock Golem | Has a vulnerable core that Greg destroys with fire magic 49. |
| Shadow Devourer | Uses Shadow Strike and leaves Shadow Crystals after defeat 49. |
- Water hazards: The underground river is raging and freezing; narrow, damp crossings leave entrants vulnerable to being pulled into it 1 8.
- Misleading entry recommendation: Reaching LV20 does not make the entire first floor safe. Its deep region is substantially more dangerous than the official recommendation suggests 46.
- Resource pressure: Greg must repeatedly hunt to replenish food, while exhausting his mana would leave him exposed to further encounters 31.
Resources and Dungeon Mechanics
Obtainable Resources
- Magic gems: Monsters can drop gems used in magical implements. Different attributes alter spells, including splitting a projectile or accelerating it 2 6.
- Rare materials: Players explore the early floors for rare materials and special gems, even when unwilling to attempt a full clear 15.
- Food and seasonings: Greg survives on hunted monster meat and uses salt and pepper-like powder found in Devil Flower territory 1.
- Shadow Crystals: Left behind when the Shadow Devourer dissolves after its defeat 49.
Greg’s Dungeon-Dependent Talents
These effects belong to Greg’s talents and operate while he is inside a dungeon 1 8.
| Talent | Effect |
|---|---|
| Dungeon Explorer | Increases damage dealt to any entity by 20%; upgradeable 1. |
| Praise the Dungeon | Prevents Greg’s actual luck value from falling below zero; upgradeable 1. |
| Dungeon’s Charity | Slightly increases experience gained; upgradeable 1. |
| Digestive Bacteria | Gives a chance to obtain a random skill or skill fragment from enemies killed inside a dungeon; fixed 1. |
First-Floor Clearing Quest
| Quest Detail | Requirement or Outcome |
|---|---|
| Quest | Redemption of the Villainous Noble 2. |
| Objective | Clear the first dungeon floor before the story’s first act ends 2. |
| Success Reward | Full upgrades to Greg’s three upgradeable dungeon talents 2. |
| Failure Penalty | A new 1,381st death CG 2. |
Story Role and Major Events
Greg’s Refuge
Immediately after transmigrating, Greg flees his classroom for the Dungeon. In the original game, his counterpart never entered a dungeon on any route, so it is the only location without a death CG for him. This makes it a refuge from scripted deaths, not from monsters or environmental danger 1.
During his first five days, Greg establishes a camp, hunts for food, gains survival skills, and writes an Academy Dungeon Survival Guide. He also notices three upper-year students passing through and later finds goblins occupying an area where they do not normally appear 1.
River Rescues and First-Floor Objective
Greg rescues Sylvia from a Blackwater Octopus, bringing him into contact with Victoria. Their confrontation triggers the first-floor clearing quest. Victoria subsequently accepts a rare Reflection Gem from Greg and promises that she and Sylvia will help him after the class placement assessment 2 6.
Lilith later enters alone in disguise to obtain loot and prove herself. A tentacle pulls her from a stone bridge into the river, where Greg saves her. She visits his camp afterward, believing him to be speaking with “Lily Carlo,” her disguised identity 8 9 10 11.
The Monster-Repelling Device Incident
Nightmare detects a regular, foreign noise from the middle region. Greg connects it to the three missing upperclassmen and the goblins’ displacement toward the shallow region 33.
The missing students are testers for Catherine Roman’s secret magical device. Catherine refuses to involve the Academy because an investigation could expose the prototype and her plans to use it in the merchant guild’s succession contest 38.
Greg identifies the disturbance as the effect of Screech, a device that imitates a powerful monster’s territorial signal. It drives away weaker creatures, but its energy fluctuations attract stronger monsters in deeper areas. He concludes that Catherine’s earlier testers encountered the same danger that Victoria faced in the original game’s later commission 45.
Greg and Sylvia’s Expedition
With Victoria unable to fight because of her injuries, Greg enters with Sylvia. Together they overcome the goblins blocking the route; Greg kills the displaced elite shaman with Dark Wave before the pair crosses the safe passage into the middle region 35 40 41 42 43 44.
Greg wants to avoid the testers and proceed directly to the boss room, but Sylvia insists on searching for the missing students. In the ensuing expedition, Greg defeats a Spineback Lizard, Mossrock Golem, and Shadow Devourer using monster weaknesses, basic magic, and Sylvia’s support 45 49.
