Background / History
Morning Light Orphanage
Ellie grew up at Morning Light Orphanage, whose elderly director supported abandoned children through donations and odd jobs. At twelve, she was already capable of beating street thugs and regularly intervened when they bullied others. The younger children admired her, while the director repeatedly urged her to stop fighting and protect herself 268.
When thugs threatened to drive the orphanage out, Ellie stood between them and the director despite expecting to lose against their numbers. Six-year-old Greg arrived with knights and a butler and drove the attackers away. This was the first time someone had stepped forward to help her when she most needed it 268 269.
Becoming Greg’s Maid
Determined to repay Greg, Ellie offered to become his maid. When he refused, she knocked down a knight who tried to stop her, grabbed Greg by the collar, and demanded that he reconsider. His butler, Sebas, recognized her exceptional talent and accepted her as an apprentice maid at Duke Sass’s Mansion 269.
Her apprenticeship exposed her poor household skills: she broke plates, burned soup, damaged clothing, and scattered books while cleaning. Frustrated by her failures, she amused herself by frightening Greg with pranks. She eventually became his full-fledged personal maid and remained with him for more than ten years 269.
Ellie both cared for and disciplined Greg throughout his childhood. She wiped away his tears while calling him a wimp, dragged him by the ear when he misbehaved, and frequently rapped him on the head. Her swordsmanship was already formidable at twelve: one practice session killed every Monster on the mountain behind the estate, prompting the family to seal it off for a month 244.
The Sass Mansion’s Secrets
After Duke Sass brought secretive strangers into the mansion, servants and branch-family relatives began disappearing. Greg became withdrawn and hostile, distancing himself from his fiancée, adopted sister, and Ellie. Ellie refused to leave him alone, repeatedly forcing her way back into his life 414.
She later attempted to investigate the disappearances, but Greg blocked her path and pleaded, “Don’t go.” Recognizing that he feared for her safety, Ellie came to regard the mansion as a gilded cage holding him prisoner. She trained desperately to become strong enough to protect him and free him 414.
When Greg was expelled from the family, Ellie felt relief rather than anger: he had finally escaped. Although no longer formally his maid, she refused his suggestion that she pursue an independent life, insisting that staying with him was already the life she wanted 27 414.
Appearance
- Face and complexion: Delicate, doll-like features and fair skin; Greg considers her beauty comparable to that of the original game’s heroines 26 211 271.
- Hair: Long golden or dark-golden hair, sometimes tied into a high ponytail 27 211.
- Eyes: Usually described as blue, azure, or pale blue. Some passages instead describe them as green or amber 26 29 160 161 212.
- Clothing: Wears a white-silk maid’s dress early in the story, a loose cloak during church activities, and ordinary dresses when out in the city 30 79 211.
- Hands: Thin calluses on her fingertips from years of sword practice 413.
Personality
Ellie combines unwavering devotion with a sharp tongue and intimidating threats. She calls Greg an idiot, threatens to kill him in a sweet voice, and conceals concern beneath sarcasm. His safety nevertheless takes priority over the Empire, the Dungeon, or the Demon King Cult; she trusts his decisions even when she does not understand his plans 27 246 270 272.
Her attachment gradually changed from gratitude and affection for a younger boy into romantic possessiveness. She feared being replaced when Greg gained an adopted sister, resented his engagement, and became furious when it ended. She is especially sensitive to being excluded or seeing him with other women, but becomes shy and visibly happy when he gives her personal attention 269 411 413.
Greg distinguishes three forms of her anger: explosive violence, icy sarcasm, and silent sulking. He recognizes the last as hurt that requires reassurance rather than solitude. Although he often dismisses her as hopeless outside swordsmanship, Ellie recognizes Wendy’s talent and proudly credits her with the Night Church’s success 161 244.
In battle, Ellie enjoys strong opponents and can become dangerously overconfident. After a time trap nearly killed her, she admitted that relying on her higher level had been arrogant and apologized for exhausting Greg during her rescue. Her desire to grow stronger is tied to protecting him, including from the possible dangers of Nightmare’s influence 270 280 314.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Ellie is a prodigious swordswoman whose speed, strength, and precision make her Greg’s principal fighting partner in the Imperial Dungeon 197 211.
- Kills ordinary Monsters with clean, precise strikes, often before they can react 266 267.
- Defeats the Imperial Dungeon’s First Floor lord in under five minutes 266.
- Escapes pursuit by more than a dozen knight commanders after storming the Royal Capital over Greg’s broken engagement 79.
- Trades blows with Roland, the Sword of the Empire, before gaining insight and defeating him 314.
- Can learn through combat: her duel with Roland produces a sudden two-level breakthrough 314.
Sword Energy
Ellie channels magic power through her longsword to release silver-white ranged slashes 274.
- Precisely cuts down fleeing Demon King Cult members 247.
- Sends crescent-shaped attacks powerful enough to shake a hall and dislodge stone 274.
- Cuts through both a cultist and the wall behind him during her duel with Roland 314.
- Her sword energy remains vulnerable to temporal interference; the Everturning Filthy Clock slows it enough to evade 275.
Sword Domain—Condemnation
Condemnation is Ellie’s nascent domain, also called a Proto-Domain. Its activation floods the surroundings with silver-white radiance and produces golden patterns along her blade 276 279 314.
- Bisects and destroys the Everturning Filthy Clock after Greg freezes its gears and prevents Time Reversal 276.
- Overpowers Roland’s blood-red Blood Slash domain, pierces his defenses, and leaves him unconscious 314.
- Requires significant exertion; Greg avoids having her use it against the Crystal-Spined Beast to preserve stamina for the floor boss 279.
- Ellie initially keeps it secret because she wants to give Greg a “surprise” when needed 277.
Evasion and Combat Instincts
- Detects concealed danger in a mysterious black-haired woman and immediately prepares to fight 80.
- Moves fast enough to leave afterimages and follows Greg’s feinting instructions without hesitation 275.
- Draws an enemy’s attention through attacks at vulnerable areas, then escapes at difficult angles. Against the Crystal-Spined Beast, this creates an opening for Greg’s Black Flame 279.
Limitations
- Time manipulation: Level 71 does not protect her from a trap that slows her body while leaving her thoughts clear. Greg must rescue her before nearby Monsters reach her throat 266 267.
- Resistant armor: Ordinary sword attacks barely mark the Crystal-Spined Beast’s shell and hurt her gripping hand 279.
- Household work: Her combat talent does not extend to domestic duties. Greg identifies plain rice and boiled eggs as her reliable cooking repertoire; her Dungeon soup produces purple steam 269 270.
- Academy access: Being neither a student nor an authorized attendant prevents her from accompanying Greg into the Academy Dungeon early on 29.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Longsword — Her primary weapon, carried in a dull-silver scabbard and sometimes concealed beneath her cloak or skirt 79 160.
- Maid’s uniform — Retained after her formal service to Greg ends 30.
- Mask — Worn while finalizing the Night Church’s agreement with Catherine 364.
- Lily-of-the-valley hairpin — An elven silver accessory decorated with moonstones. Wendy buys it for fifty gold coins; Ellie chooses it while wondering whether Greg will like how she looks wearing it 411.
- Private savings — Lends Greg three gold coins when he is penniless. Despite the church’s growth, she later receives only a fixed salary under Wendy’s spending policy 28 266.
Relationships
- Greg Sass — Former master, childhood companion, and romantic attachment. His childhood rescue begins her devotion; she continues protecting him after his expulsion and promises to remain beside him 27 269 413 414.
- Wendy — Recruited by Ellie and appointed the Night Church’s Night Raven. Wendy handles nearly all recruitment, intelligence, preaching, and daily administration, while also mediating Ellie’s disputes with Greg 79 161 243.
- Vivian — Greg’s former fiancée. Ellie resents her departure and challenges her renewed wish to stay beside him, questioning how persistently she tried to reach him in the past 211 243.
- Sebas — Greg’s elderly butler, who recognizes Ellie’s potential and admits her to the Sass household as an apprentice maid 269.
- Morning Light Orphanage’s director and children — Her childhood family. She defends them from thugs and promises to return and ensure they are no longer bullied 268 269.
- Nightmare — The goddess whose faith Ellie helps restore. Ellie worries about the being who granted Greg his unusual powers, while Nightmare praises Ellie as a “good girl” 135 277 280.
- Catherine Roman — A prospective church partner whose cooperation proposal Ellie accepts immediately after Greg privately signals her to cooperate 360 364.
- Roland — A powerful rival defeated in the Imperial Capital. Ellie dislikes him but enjoys their duel and regrets that it ends before she can gain another level 314.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing the Night Church
- Reunites with Greg at Yenil City’s Clock Tower, rebukes his disappearance, and refuses to abandon him despite his inability to pay her 26 27.
- Witnesses Greg’s dark power and learns that he is Nightmare’s emissary. She accepts his request to spread the forgotten goddess’s faith 29 30.
- Recruits Wendy, whose organizational abilities turn the assignment into the Night Church. Ellie provides its armed protection and agrees to confront the Gray Rat Gang so frightened slum girls can join safely 79.
- The resulting growth in faith astonishes Greg. His fear that Ellie might be forcing conversions is a suspicion, not an established account of her methods 135 161.
Imperial Dungeon and Wendy’s Rescue
- Travels into the Empire with Wendy, but her eagerness to fight a strong enemy at a hidden knights’ camp threatens their mission’s secrecy 221.
- Receives Greg’s map and explicit warning not to explore deeply alone. She nevertheless clears the First Floor and proceeds onward, becoming trapped on the Second Floor 246 266 267.
- After Greg rescues her, they reconcile and fight together. Ellie delivers the finishing strike against the Everturning Filthy Clock, then helps explore the Third Floor 270 276 278 279.
- Directs Night Church officers to carry out Greg’s plan to rescue Wendy 290.
- Defeats Roland in the Imperial Capital, then encounters the phantoms appearing throughout the city 314.
Church Cooperation and the Sass Family’s Return
- Accepts Catherine’s proposal and finalizes every term within an hour, leaving Catherine suspicious of the unusually accommodating church 360 364.
- Enjoys shopping with Wendy but leaves angrily after seeing Greg at a café with another woman. Greg subsequently takes her to the Golden Crucible for the dinner he promised 411 413.
- Becomes immediately hostile when a Sass Family steward asks Greg to return and discuss reinstatement as heir. At Level 73, she believes she can oppose anyone in the household, but allows Greg to answer for himself 414.

“No idea. I just somehow knew how.”
— On mastering her domain 314
“There's just no helping you. I'll keep staying by your side from now on too... you silly young master.” 414
Trivia
- In every known route and ending of the original game, Ellie stays with Greg and meets ruin alongside him. Even its final DLC never explains her loyalty, making it a recurring complaint among players 31.
- She habitually goes to bed shortly after nightfall and can fall asleep within seconds. This routine returns once she confirms Greg is safe 79.
- She loves sweets and roast meat, but the happiness of her outing with Greg comes from his specifically treating her, not merely from the food 244 245.
- When troubled, she unconsciously rubs the rim of her teacup—a habit Greg has recognized since childhood 244.
