Background / History
Lu Ziye is a university sophomore on Blue Star and an avid gamer who already uses the username Passing Pure-Love Warrior before entering the Wasteland. He discovers Awakening of the Old Gods while browsing a gaming forum from his dormitory with a VR headset. Despite his roommate’s warning, he runs the one-kilobyte client and loses consciousness as it launches 1.
After the first session, he becomes a vocal defender of the game’s realism on public forums. Even Monkeys Have Dignity invites him into a chat with Kindergarten Boss, and the full five-player squad later exchanges WeChat IDs to coordinate outside the game. When he learns that the server will reopen at seven in the morning, he sets several alarms for 6:50 7 16.
His roommate Wang eventually discovers that Lu Ziye is one of the five famous first-test players. Wang appeals to their friendship—including buying him instant noodles and answering roll call when he skips class—and begs to borrow his headset 30.
Appearance
- Original avatar: An identical muscular, bald male body wearing baggy white boxers, shared by all five players because the rushed summoning leaves no time for customization 2.
- Customized hair: Bright silver-white spikes, deliberately modeled after an anime protagonist 9.
- Face: Sharply chiseled features with a deliberately added red battle scar crossing the bridge of his nose between his eyebrows 9.
- Build: Muscle definition pushed to the creation panel’s maximum; he initially poses shirtless to admire his biceps 9.
- Veteran presentation: Wears an Ash Robe with glowing runes around the collar and cuffs, accompanied by a dark-gold Ash Guide title and Lv.7 marker 45.
Personality
Lu Ziye is exuberant, competitive, and openly theatrical. He prioritizes looking impressive over temporary balance advantages, defending his white-haired, heavily muscled avatar as an action-game heartthrob. He enjoys the second-beta newcomers’ admiration and tries to hide his smile while presenting himself as a veteran 9 45.
His appetite for rewards often overrides caution. While fleeing the Cave Stalker, he stops to kill weaker monsters rather than leave empty-handed. Later, he tries to continue farming after the crimson moon rises, requiring Ji Luo to stop him. Nevertheless, he is not genuinely fearless: the Cave Stalker visibly shakes him, and he privately panics while leading newcomers into the Black Forest 13 29 47.
He regularly mocks his teammates’ avatars and mannerisms, but cooperates closely with them in combat. He gives Ma Lou finishing blows so the squad can learn what First-Tier skills unlock, and during the church siege he willingly takes fatal attacks to protect the statue and create openings for his allies 9 11 22 36 38.
Abilities & Skills
Ashen Missile
A projectile of black smoke and sparks that explodes into ash on impact. Its class description specifies minor damage against both physical enemies and spirits, together with temporary blindness 23.
- Tests it immediately after reaching Lv.1, blasting dry grass into a shallow scorched crater 24.
- Uses it alongside Ji Luo’s missile to damage and blind monsters trapped in the squad’s killing pit 27.
- Consumes mental energy. The squad’s Lv.1 testing indicates roughly three basic casts before exhaustion and about half an hour for full natural recovery; this estimate comes from Ma Lou’s demonstration 23.
Ashen Shaping
Controls nearby ash to create temporary forms. The class skill can produce weapons or defensive barriers, with hardness and duration dependent on mental energy 23.
- Joins the other three allies in using Ashen Shaping to strengthen Ji Luo’s finishing spear attack against Flesh Fusion 40.
- Uses an ash version of his spiked club to crack the weakened monster’s head during the final assault 40.
- Constructs are limited by the caster’s available mental energy rather than being permanent equipment 23.
Frontline Combat
His customary squad role is to initiate encounters with heavy club strikes, staggering or pinning enemies so his teammates can follow up 22 23.
- Improvises weapons from door panels, table legs, bricks, and rocks 2 13 36.
- Targets vulnerable areas: skulls on Corrupted Villagers, a Cave Stalker’s joint, and Flesh Fusion’s damaged head 13 24 40.
- Grapples a Mutant Hound and tells Ji Luo to spear through him to reach its eye and brain 36.
- Clings to Flesh Fusion and bites off rotten flesh to distract it from Lin En’s statue 38.
System Resurrection
His player body dissolves into ash upon death and can return through the church’s resurrection system 3 13.
- Ordinary resurrection requires available lives or payment; exhausting the initial free revives forces the squad to earn Ash Coins 14 16.
- Later hunting instructions identify the normal revival cost as ten Ash Coins 48.
- The Defense of the Deity Hall event temporarily grants unlimited free revivals, allowing repeated sacrificial attacks 36 40.
- Resurrection does not eliminate pain: wounds still cause realistic sensations despite system reduction 36.
Crafting, Construction & Leadership
- Crafts his own stone-shard club using black wood, vines, resin, and sharp stone fragments 22.
- Hoists thick wooden poles into position while the squad builds the NPC’s house 15.
- Helps excavate and maintain the concealed monster-killing pit 27 28.
- Leads ten second-beta players, teaching quiet movement, flanking, aggro management, and coordinated attacks 48.
- Recognizes suspicious movement deeper in the forest and orders his squad to tighten formation 49.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Stone-Shard Spiked Club / Pimple Mace — Homemade blunt weapon with a black wooden shaft and roughly a dozen lashed-on stone shards. Its system rating lists low damage and a chance of mild dizziness on head strikes. Lu Ziye names it the Great-Luck Skull Crusher 22 23.
- Broken wooden door panel — His first improvised weapon. After being killed during his initial charge, he later plunges its splintered edge into the Mutated Corpse’s neck to finish the fight 2 3 4.
- Ash Spear — A temporary two-meter spear created for him by Ma Lou and Jiahao during the Flesh Fusion battle 39.
- Ash Robe — Worn for the first-test veterans’ introduction to the newcomers; its collar and cuffs bear glowing divine runes 45.
- Secondhand VR headset — His Blue Star device for checking the client and entering the game 7.
- Replacement stone spears — Sells Crazy Young Master two replacements for two Ash Coins each after the newcomer’s weapon breaks 48.
Relationships
- Ji Luo — Tactical commander and close squadmate. Lu Ziye follows his plans, opens fights for him, and sacrifices his body to enable decisive attacks 11 24 36.
- Even Monkeys Have Dignity / Ma Lou — Squadmate and frequent target of his teasing. They trip the Mutated Corpse together; Lu Ziye later helps him level despite blaming him for the Cave Stalker wipe 4 13 22.
- Kindergarten Boss / Bossy Guy — Fellow first-test player and frontline partner. Boss shields him during the Cave Stalker rematch and repeatedly attacks Flesh Fusion alongside him 24 40.
- I’m Not Jiahao — Squadmate whose affected persona and avatar he mocks. Jiahao nevertheless supplies magical support and helps create his Ash Spear 10 11 39.
- Lin En, the Lord of Ashes — The deity whose system summons him. Lu Ziye fights to protect his statue during the church siege 2 38.
- Wang — University roommate who supports him with food and class roll calls, then begs for access to the game after discovering his veteran status 30.
- Immortal Star Crazy Young Master / Kuang Shao — Newcomer under his guidance and a customer for replacement weapons. Lu Ziye later orders the squad to spear through Kuang Shao when a Rift Ghoul bites his arm 48 49.
- Knight Kyle — Wounded knight encountered during the squad’s forest expedition. After the players intervene against his pursuers, Lu Ziye tries to communicate with him 49 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First-Test Survival
- Leads the first charge against the Mutated Corpse, dies to a single blow, and later lands the finishing strike during the squad’s successful rematch 2 3 4.
- Discovers Ash Coin drops while killing Corrupted Villagers during the retreat from the Cave Stalker; the squad is subsequently wiped out 13.
- Helps build shelter to recover the funds needed for resurrection. His attempt to gather wood by punching a tree instead hurts his hand and deals one point of damage 14 15 16.
Black Forest Farming & Portal Construction
- Becomes the squad’s club-wielding initiator and advances to First Tier through coordinated hunting 22 23 24.
- Helps defeat the Cave Stalker that previously wiped out the party; the resulting loot triggers Fog Town’s Plea for Aid 24 25.
- Participates in industrialized pit-trap farming that raises the squad to Lv.3 and helps rebuild the Ashen Portal 27 28.
- Faces stalled progress when the squad discovers it has exhausted nearby monsters and herbs, prompting exploration of the abandoned village 32 33.
Flesh Fusion & the Church Siege
- Kills a guarding cultist and intercepts the red-robed leader while the squad attacks the incubating Flesh Cocoon. The resulting encounter wipes out all five players 34 35.
- Exploits the defense event’s unlimited revivals to hold the church breach and repeatedly distract Flesh Fusion 36 38.
- Attacks its feeding tentacles alongside Bossy Guy, helping interrupt its attempted Second-Tier advancement. He then joins the final assault and supports Ji Luo’s finishing strike 40.
- Reaches Lv.7 after the victory and receives Ash Guide when the completed portal opens the next beta 41.
Second-Beta Guide
- Appears before fifty newcomers as one of the five Lv.7 veterans, then leads a ten-player hunting squad and profits from replacement-weapon sales 45 48.
- His squad reaches the boundary between the Black Forest’s outskirts and interior, encounters Kyle’s pursuers, and intervenes against Fallen Cultists and Rift Ghouls 49.
- Takes the lead in checking whether the rescued Kyle can hear and respond to the players 50.
