Many girls had a habit of carrying snacks with them.
Chen Jing was one of them.
The moment she saw the zombies, she knew disaster had struck. Many disasters lasted a long time, and supplies were vital.
Having food and water could greatly extend her survival time, allowing her to hold out until help arrived from the government.
Although Su Dazhu had saved her, she had no intention of sharing her snacks with him.
After hiding with Su Dazhu for most of the day, she was painfully hungry too. She had planned to find an excuse to get away from him and sneak a bite on her own.
But there was no telling how long this disaster would last. Chen Jing thought she should save them until she was starving and truly had nothing else to eat.
She hadn't expected those two bastards, Dharma King and Chen Luo, to expose the snacks in her backpack.
Until then, she had insisted she had nothing on her.
Chen Jing's mind went blank. Being exposed wasn't the biggest problem. Having offended both men, she probably wouldn't be able to freeload off their supplies anymore.
Especially Chen Luo, who seemed to be targeting her, whether openly or subtly.
Looking at the backpack full of snacks, Chen Luo grinned. Heaven knew, he had known Chen Jing would hoard supplies later, but he hadn't expected her to be carrying so many snacks even before the Apocalypse.
A little of her ugly true nature had been exposed.
"Heh, just looking at these makes me hungry. Don't mind if I do."
Chen Luo stabbed a straw into the Wahaha drink and drained it in a few gulps.
He handed the beef bites and potato chips to Su Dazhu at the same time. "Dazhu, you're still hungry, right? Take these. Once we're full, we'll go get supplies."
This time, Su Dazhu didn't stand on ceremony with Chen Luo. He took them without a word, then shot Chen Jing a hostile look.
That morning, he had risked his life to save Chen Jing. When she couldn't climb into the villa, he had climbed back over and boosted her across.
He had nearly been caught by a zombie.
Yet she had food all along and had lied to him about it.
Clearly, she just hadn't wanted to share.
Su Dazhu was simply guileless and didn't assume the worst of people. He wasn't stupid.
Why should he show Chen Jing any courtesy now?
Coming to her senses, Chen Jing screamed and lunged at them.
"Those are mine! Give them back!"
Chen Luo shoved her to the ground.
Chen Jing landed on her backside and began sobbing. "Two grown men bullying one little girl! What kind of men are you?"
Chen Luo sneered. Go ask the zombies whether they care if you're a man or a woman.
Although a little of Chen Jing's true nature had been exposed, it wasn't enough for Su Dazhu to gain a deep understanding of human nature.
He needed to hit Chen Jing with something harsher.
Before long, Chen Luo had a plan.
Instead, Chen Luo comforted Chen Jing. "Why are you crying? We need to eat our fill to have the strength to find supplies. You don't have to come this time. Since we ate your food, we'll pay you back double when we return."
Chen Jing also realized that, no matter what, she couldn't fall out with Chen Luo and Su Dazhu. It would do her no good whatsoever and would only plunge her into the abyss. Even if she died, there would be no one to appeal to.
With tears in her eyes, Chen Jing said, "I was wrong. I went hungry as a child, and it left me scared. I know this is a bad habit. I'm sorry. It was an instinctive reaction."
On and on she went, making up a story about how miserable her childhood had been.
Even Chen Luo had to admire her ability to invent a story like that on the spot.
Chen Luo ate a few jelly cups and gave everything else to Su Dazhu.
Chen Jing watched from the side, her heart aching. Just like that, all her reserve supplies were gone.
Chen Luo said, "Dazhu, let's rest for an hour, then check out the supermarket by the entrance."
Su Dazhu nodded. "Whatever you say, Brother Chen."
Chen Luo pretended to go rest, but actually summoned Dharma King.
"Dharma King, go outside and lure some zombies over. A dozen or so. Bring them here."
By slowing down instead of shaking the zombies off, Dharma King could lure the lowest-level, mindless zombies.
A person's true heart showed in a crisis. When disaster loomed, their true nature and humanity were often laid completely bare.
Dharma King looked at Chen Luo in confusion. I understand luring zombies, but bringing them home? That I don't understand.
Chen Luo glanced at Dharma King. "Don't ask so many questions. You'll understand when you get back."
Dharma King left to carry out the order.
Chen Luo first went downstairs and quietly opened the front door. Then he took four heads of garlic out of his ability space and minced them in the kitchen.
Garlic couldn't fight off zombies or frighten them. On the contrary, its pungent smell attracted them intensely.
If someone carried a sharp, irritating smell, low-level zombies would swarm them and tear them apart.
Chen Luo brought out two bowls of garlic juice and set them on the table.
"Dazhu, there's no need to worry about going out this time. Remember how I came back from outside earlier? I happened to see someone wearing a string of garlic. The zombies were so scared that they kept backing away."
Chen Jing's eyes lit up. Garlic did work against hopping vampires in the movies.
Su Dazhu looked delighted too.
Chen Luo said regretfully, "Unfortunately, this is all the garlic we have at home. It's only enough for two people. Let's see if we can find some at the supermarket."
Just then, the roars of a group of zombies came from the distance.
Clearly, there were quite a few of them, not just one or two.
Chen Luo's expression "changed dramatically."
The zombies' roars drew closer and grew louder.
Soon, they sounded as though they were right beside their ears.
The iron gate clattered.
Chen Jing turned deathly pale. "Wasn't the gate locked?"
Hearing something, Chen Jing lost every trace of color. "The zombies are on the first floor!"
Without another word, Chen Luo poured the garlic juice over himself, then pointed at the other bowl and spoke to Su Dazhu.
"Dazhu, hurry and use that bowl of garlic!"
Su Dazhu was kindhearted. Although he had begun to dislike Chen Jing, wouldn't she die if he used it himself?
There were clearly too many zombies for them to handle.
Until then, Chen Jing had still harbored doubts about Chen Luo's claims. Could Chen Luo be trying to set me up?
But once Chen Luo poured the garlic juice over himself, all her doubts vanished.
Surely Chen Luo wouldn't harm himself?
Only one bowl remained, which meant only one more person could survive.
Chen Jing reacted quickly. Without hesitation, she grabbed the garlic juice Chen Luo had prepared for Su Dazhu and poured it over herself.
Chen Luo could have stopped her. But no, he simply didn't.
Before the Apocalypse, Chen Jing wouldn't even eat garlic, let alone pour it over herself. The smell was far too pungent.
Now, she was terrified she hadn't gotten enough garlic juice on herself.
Su Dazhu froze at the sight.
Chen Luo smiled instead. "See that, Dazhu? After the Apocalypse, don't go around being nice to just anyone. Some people aren't human at all."
In his previous life, Chen Jing hadn't just been good at playing innocent; she had been ruthless too. While Su Dazhu and Chen Luo were injured, she had stolen all their supplies and latched onto another powerful protector.
It had nearly driven Chen Luo mad with rage.
Chen Jing's expression changed drastically. "You set me up?"
