Background / History

Previous Timeline

Dharma King was originally a stray seen at a dog-meat restaurant in Demon City before the apocalypse. After awakening, he became an exceptional animal ability user, surpassing human lightning users despite animals generally having lower growth potential. His victories over people seeking to eat him earned him the title Thunder Dharma King 2.

He eventually reached King Rank. Chen Luo repeatedly ambushed him before finally killing and eating him, then absorbed his dark-purple, egg-sized crystal. That absorption took more than a week and carried Chen Luo beyond King Rank 2 8 10 24.

Rescue After Chen Luo’s Rebirth

Remembering Dharma King’s strength, Chen Luo commissioned a search and offered a one-million reward. The searchers located the black, one-eared dog at a restaurant, where he was caged alongside other dogs awaiting slaughter 2 3.

Chen Luo falsely claimed the restaurant had stolen his pet and pressured its owner, Bai Er, into releasing him. Recognizing that Chen Luo had saved him, Dharma King followed without a leash. Chen Luo paid Wang Ming the reward, brought the dog home, bathed him, and fed him sweet-and-sour ribs 3 4.

Appearance

  • Black coat and missing left ear: the identifying features that let Chen Luo recognize him in the search team’s photograph 2.
  • Initially unassuming: neither especially large nor intimidating; his listless expression made him appear helpless in the restaurant cage 3 12.
  • Later well-fed condition: described with glossy fur and a sturdy build during the confrontation with Zhang Qin’s group 45.
  • Visible awakening effect: purple electrical arcs flickered across his fur when his lightning ability emerged 9.

Personality

Dharma King is deeply attached to Chen Luo. Before the apocalypse, he feared being abandoned and returning to stray life, whining and rubbing against Chen Luo’s leg when his new owner prepared to leave. Later, he openly declared his loyalty through barking and risked injury to draw a rat swarm away from Chen Luo and Su Dazhu 5 20 41.

His loyalty coexists with a sarcastic inner voice. He resents being assigned household chores, recognizes Chen Luo’s dubious excuses, and complains about responsibilities he considers inappropriate for a dog. Nevertheless, he usually obeys; his first killing of a human involved visible hesitation before following Chen Luo’s order 13 17 19 23.

He takes pride in his combat strength and dislikes being treated as inferior simply because he is a dog. Being introduced as a lightning mage makes him straighten up proudly, while threats to turn him into dog meat provoke immediate hostility 30 39 44.

Abilities & Skills

Lightning Ability

Dharma King has exceptional lightning talent, demonstrated by his early awakening, rapid learning, and previous-timeline ranking 2 9 10.

  • Electric Arc: fires purple lightning from his mouth. Following Chen Luo’s instructions, he shattered a television on his first attempt 10.
  • Lightning Ball: a newly mastered, high-damage attack first shown against the Level Three Devourer. Its explosion later killed two Level One users at once and three members of Zhang Qin’s group 32 39 45.
  • Energy limits: initially exhausted his reserves before killing a second zombie. Lightning Ball consumes considerably more energy than Electric Arc, making the latter more efficient against ordinary zombies 10 32.
  • Defensive disadvantage: at Level Two, his Lightning Ball injured the Level Three Devourer but caused no serious wound through its specialized defenses 32.
  • Skill development: new levels increase his available power, but he must discover and practice lightning techniques himself; Chen Luo cannot teach specialized lightning skills 23.

Speed, Agility, and Physical Combat

Awakening increased Dharma King’s speed, while later levels strengthened his body as well 14 26.

  • Kiting: maintains distance while drawing enemies after him and attacking. Chen Luo considers him capable of wearing down Su Dazhu through this approach 10 24.
  • Rocket Headbutt: covered more than ten meters in one second and knocked down two zombies attacking Ma Yu 26.
  • Charging and biting: knocked a fleeing Zhang Meng to the ground and later tore open a hostile survivor’s throat 12 13.
  • Speed limits: outran ordinary mutated rats, but the Mutant Rat King could match his speed 20.

Tracking and Guard Duty

His keen hearing and sense of smell make him an effective sentry 19.

  • Handles threats within his capabilities and alerts Chen Luo to stronger intruders 19.
  • Recognized Ma Yu by scent before Chen Luo could confidently identify her 26.
  • Guards supplies, the household, and Chen Luo while he absorbs crystals 13 19 46.
  • Accompanies Mi Ling and Mi Li as a bodyguard, with instructions to intervene only if they encounter danger 42.

Intelligence and Tactical Cooperation

His intelligence develops with awakening, allowing him to follow complex instructions and devise tactics independently 4 9 45.

  • Communication: uses barking, gestures, and expressions; barked nine times to report absorbing nine crystals 19.
  • Independent tactics: drew six attackers’ attention so Su Dazhu could strike from their blind spot—a maneuver Chen Luo had not taught him 45.
  • Practical tasks: learned to pour water, wring rags, wipe floors, open doors, and carry out trash 17 23.
  • Crystal absorption: swallows crystals to strengthen his ability. Chen Luo supplies more than he can absorb each day and instructs him to stop at his limit 18 44.

Relationships

  • Chen Luo — Rescuer, owner, trainer, and companion in the current timeline; his eventual killer in the previous one. Chen Luo relies on his loyalty and early combat strength while also assigning him chores 2 3 17 19.
  • Su Dazhu — Combat partner. Dharma King helps protect him during the rat-swarm escape and cooperates with him in the ambush against Zhang Qin’s group 20 45.
  • Rice — Fellow animal ability user and occasional interpreter. Dharma King initially captures the cat, disparages its combat strength, and later asks it to translate a meal request 29 30 34.
  • Ma Yu — Familiar household member whom he identifies by scent and saves from two attacking zombies 26.
  • Mi Li and Mi Ling — Protected companions during their independent supply search. Chen Luo also uses Dharma King’s strength as a benchmark when challenging Mi Ling 42 43 44.
  • Chen Jing — Becomes hostile toward her after she proposes testing potentially unsafe water on him; his attack on her backpack exposes her hidden food 15.
