Background
Wade grew up under the surname Wilson after associating it with the happiness and family shown in a fast-food commercial. He endured poverty and abuse in an orphanage, fled at age twelve, boarded a smuggling ship, and was sent to Africa as a child soldier. There, he befriended and saved Happy Hogan; Wade later promised that he would not kill innocent people. 1742 1748
As an adult, Wade worked as a mercenary across Africa and South America. Canadian agent Michaud cultivated his trust by repeatedly feeding him jobs, while Wade fell into a cycle of completing contracts, spending his earnings, and seeking new work when broke. 2043
Terminal cancer led Wade to volunteer for a Weapon X experiment intended to implant Wolverine’s Healing Factor into disposable, brainwashed super-weapons. His cancer and the Healing Factor reached a balance, granting powerful regeneration but leaving his body grotesquely disfigured. The project declared him a failure and attempted to dispose of him. 2046
After surviving imprisonment in a black-site prison, Wade escaped with Su Ming, who presented himself as Wade’s cousin “Slade.” Su Ming provided a mask for Wade’s ruined face and aided his search for the people responsible for the experiment. 2047 2048
Wade’s personal history is complicated by his attempts to create a more satisfying origin story. He and Su Ming used time travel to examine—and reject—several contradictory versions of “Deadpool,” including alien, vigilante, spider-powered, Hulk, Thor, and Panther variants. Su Ming ultimately took control of arranging a new origin narrative for him. 1148 1151 1152
Appearance
Deadpool usually conceals his severely decayed, cancer-ravaged body beneath a red-and-black bodysuit and mask. His unmasked appearance and persistent odor routinely provoke disgust or vomiting in others. 233 638
- Red-and-black full-body uniform with white mask lenses. 637 1028
- Wears a mask to hide his corpse-like, disfigured face. 2048
- Carries a persistent garbage-like stench caused by his deteriorated body and poor hygiene. 1028 4597
- Frequently wears battered or unsuitable clothing beneath and around his costume, including a camouflage vest and strawberry-patterned underwear. 1028
- Can use the Plot Continuity Gem to physically rearrange facial features, including removing and reattaching his own mouth. 629
Personality
Deadpool is loud, impulsive, crude, and relentlessly theatrical. He narrates his actions to an unseen audience, treats life-threatening situations as performances, and frequently breaks tension with jokes, songs, poses, and pop-culture references. His behavior can resemble a mental episode, but his “audience” sometimes provides him with genuine information. 234 5940
Despite his erratic conduct, Wade is not unintelligent. He can devise unconventional battlefield plans, track targets through behavioral deductions, and exploit an opponent’s disgust, vanity, or lack of preparation. 621 1593 5211
His mercenary ethics are highly personal. Wade may abandon or even turn against an employer if he likes the target better, resulting in a mission success rate of roughly sixty to seventy percent and consistently poor client reviews. 629 He nevertheless shows loyalty toward people he considers family or friends, particularly Su Ming, Peter Parker, and his daughter. 1243 5839 5890
Abilities & Skills
Healing Factor and Immortality
Wade’s cancerous cells coexist with the Weapon X Healing Factor, allowing him to recover from otherwise fatal injuries.
- Regenerates after decapitation, incineration, dismemberment, crushing, and explosive destruction. 619 1249 4597 4651
- Can reattach detached body parts, though recovery may require time and assistance. 237 2051
- His regeneration is inconsistent in speed and can be delayed under severe damage. 2051
- Carbonadium inhibits cellular division and is therefore dangerous to regenerative beings, though Wade’s cancer makes him unusually unconcerned about its carcinogenic radiation. 2709
- Wade maintains that his survival ultimately depends on popularity and support from “Outside the Wall,” rather than the Healing Factor alone. 4651 5637
Plot Continuity Gem
Deadpool possesses an exclusive reality-altering Gem tied to narrative continuity. Anyone else attempting to use it must first become Deadpool. 619
- Alters physical reality through Wade’s imagination while making the result appear naturally continuous with the setting. 620
- Transformed Yggdrasil into a decorated Christmas tree and changed day into a snowy night. 620
- Manipulated Loki’s mental state and later transformed a Celestial into Wolverine to exploit Carbonadium’s anti-healing properties. 621 4244
- Allows Wade to alter his own body, including moving or removing facial features. 629
- Its effectiveness is diminished or absent when Wade does not possess it. 2051 3058
Combat Training
Deadpool is a highly capable mercenary with abilities broadly comparable to Deathstroke’s, though Deathstroke surpasses him in martial skill and raw strength. 233
- Proficient with firearms, blades, infiltration, and close-quarters combat. 1045 2057
- Possesses Super Soldier-level hearing and physical capability. 618
- Uses his regenerative body recklessly to draw enemy fire, absorb punishment, and create openings for allies. 1918 5952
- Can remain tactically effective while severely wounded, including fighting with shattered bones or exposed organs. 2057 3555
- His fighting style favors surprise attacks, theatrical distractions, and excessive collateral damage. 2724 3698
Disgust Manipulation
Deadpool’s decayed body, odor, and deliberately revolting tactics function as an unusual offensive asset.
- His face alone can cause opponents to panic or vomit. 638 2711
- His naked body induced a supernatural state of “Disgust” in Adam Mage, incapacitating him. 4651
- The Hands of Creation were unable to withstand his intentionally grotesque displays. 5542
- Uses body odor, filth, and biological waste to incapacitate demons and other enemies. 3698 5210
- The effect is not fully under his control and alienates allies as often as enemies. 4931 5174
Fourth-Wall Awareness
Deadpool communicates with an apparently nonexistent audience, whom he calls “Guys” or viewers.
- Receives ideas, warnings, and fragments of useful intelligence through these conversations. 5216 5940
- Believes popularity protects him from death and actively seeks attention, publicity, and “screen time.” 4209 5890
- Uses audience interaction to frame plans, solicit approval, and justify his actions. 3057 4216
- Taskmaster is uniquely able to hear some of the voices and advice affecting Wade’s mind. 1242
