Background / History
Childhood and adoption
Tobirama selects Orochimaru as his disciple when the boy is approximately five, allowing him only one day each month to visit his biological parents. He brings Orochimaru to the Princess Mausoleum and asks Yanbai to oversee his education. Madara’s presence initially terrifies the child 175.
Yanbai begins with a realistic modern-world illusion rather than simply implanting knowledge. With his early memories sealed, Orochimaru spends ten simulated years growing up under Yanbai’s care. When he reaches fifteen within the illusion, Yanbai restores his memories and assures him that he will always be his child 178 179.
A second simulation places Orochimaru and Madara in an ordinary father-son relationship without chakra or dōjutsu. Their initially cooperative household develops into a decades-long conflict as Orochimaru breaks laws in pursuit of knowledge. They imprison one another, escape, and continue their rivalry until Orochimaru builds a nuclear reactor to take Madara down with him, prompting Yanbai to end the simulation 179.
Although only a brief period passes outside, Orochimaru experiences seventy-three years across the two illusions. He consequently regards Yanbai and Madara as his true parents, while the parents who raised him for five years feel like family from a previous life 180 182.
Return to the Shinobi World
The loss of smartphones, the internet, and modern conveniences briefly leaves Orochimaru desperate to return to the illusion. Yanbai instead encourages him to build the world he wants, beginning with infrastructure 182.
His shinobi education combines Madara’s daily beatings with Yanbai’s healing. Alongside chakra training and bloodline modification, he joins Tobirama at the Research Institute to study ninjutsu, forbidden techniques, and technologies that improve everyday life 187.
Despite Tobirama’s argument that school would waste his time, Yanbai insists that Orochimaru needs friends his own age. His original body enters the Ninja Academy while his clones continue research. He represents the new students at the opening ceremony, later tops the academy-wide midterm examinations, and eventually graduates early after completing his credits 195 197 208 224.
Loss of his biological parents
At Yanbai’s insistence, Orochimaru continues visiting his biological parents and sharing his nonclassified achievements. During his second school year, they die just five days after his last visit; their remains are returned as fragile pieces of charcoal 213.
Their deaths force him to recognize that most people are nothing like his exceptionally powerful guardians. After presiding over the funeral, he gives Yanbai and Madara single-use alarm rings, hoping danger will not take them away without an opportunity to say goodbye. He does not attempt to resurrect his biological parents 213 214.
Appearance
- Hair and clothing: Wears his black hair short and choppy in the modern-world simulation, together with neat clothing and gold-rimmed glasses fitted with plain lenses. In the Shinobi World, he grows his hair long and wears traditional hanfu despite Madara’s objections 189.
- Eyes: Described as snake-like 492.
- Later presentation: Appears masked during his encounter with the other-world Orochimaru 492.
Personality
Orochimaru’s defining motivation is to understand the truth of the world. Yanbai considers this desire innate rather than a consequence of bereavement or mistreatment: immortality is a means of extending his search, not its ultimate purpose. Even loving parents and a happy simulated childhood do not prevent him from pursuing sophisticated crimes when laws obstruct his curiosity 176 179.
He combines exceptional memory and intelligence with calculated politeness. His simulated lifetimes teach him to read people, manage relationships, and manipulate circumstances; Madara’s harsh training makes him particularly skilled at controlling his expression and choosing reassuring words 180 187.
His affection for his adoptive family is genuine, but intertwined with fear and rebellion. He respects Madara while resisting his authority, and loves Yanbai while recognizing that his “mother” is the more frightening and incomprehensible parent 196 206 239 240.
Science consistently takes precedence over romance. Orochimaru expresses no interest in marriage, and Tsunade’s pursuit of him remains secondary to his research. Even at later family dinners, he routinely leaves after eating to return to work 181 316 485.
Abilities & Skills
Projection Ninjutsu
Orochimaru’s original composite method combines summoning principles, offensive ninjutsu, and basic techniques 195.
- Inscribes a summoning formula on his body; the demonstrated formula is on his right index finger.
- Stores prepared ninjutsu during spare time and rapidly releases them when needed.
- Pays the chakra cost of summoning rather than recreating each stored attack at activation.
- Can stockpile his own C-rank and D-rank techniques 195 202.
- Can also project techniques prepared by others. His Flower of Thorns supply must be replenished by Yanbai or Madara; using it does not establish that Orochimaru possesses their abilities 201 202 206.
Shadow Clones
Shadow clones underpin Orochimaru’s unusually high research output 195 205.
- Conduct research at multiple institutes while his original body attends school.
- Study history, political affairs, and forbidden techniques in parallel.
- Supervise the reincarnated Itama and Yuna’s continuous copying work.
- Attend family or research encounters in place of his original body; the Orochimaru approached through Mutsuto’s corpse is a shadow clone 205 492.
Summoning and Reincarnation Techniques
- Ninja-tool summoning: Retrieves inanimate equipment on demand, including a defensive shield. This variant draws on a technique used by the First Hokage during the Warring States Period 220.
- Impure World Reincarnation: Brings Tobirama back to continue research. Tobirama eventually escapes its control, becoming an independently acting revenant whose scrutiny obstructs Orochimaru’s plans 238 251.
- Living Corpse Reincarnation: Learns the perfected technique and supporting cellular theory from Cherry Ink. Its established method offers an alternative to developing immortality through destructive experimentation 246 247.
- Immortality limits: By a later period, his desire for immortality has weakened because the wish seems fulfilled, but the supplied account does not identify a particular body transfer or establish absolute invulnerability 316.
Scientific and Engineering Expertise
| Field | Documented contributions |
|---|---|
| Agriculture | Develops rice and fruit varieties 195. |
| Materials and manufacturing | Researches plastics, alloy types, and production processes 195. |
| Education | Updates and compiles textbook material; gives solutions beyond the Ninja Academy’s standard answers 195. |
| Weapons | Researches and produces firearms, proposes weapon improvements, and applies practical experience to bayonet design and nonreflective finishes 195 206 207. |
| Military transport | Designs armored vehicles for prisoners and supplies, protected by sealing jutsu and capable of high-speed travel on steep mountain roads 271. |
| Surveillance | Converts the Telescope Technique into the Heavenly Eye Technique, using wind, solar, and other natural-energy sources; later adds image recording 279. |
| Genetics and cloning | Provides genetic-inheritance and cloning knowledge used by Tobirama; collaborates with Cherry Ink on gene synthesis 243 254. |
| Public infrastructure | Regularly supplies designs and technological products that improve life throughout the Land of Fire 303. |
- Manufacturing limitation: His designs depend on precision components that other nations cannot easily reproduce from blueprints alone. He also remains frustrated by his inability to build a smartphone 271.
Combat, Strategy, and Teaching
- Prioritizes physical conditioning, weapons, and low-chakra taijutsu to compensate for limited reserves 195.
- Develops deception, escape, concealment, and tool-assisted strategies during his simulated conflict with Madara 179 207.
- Habitually studies unfamiliar surroundings to identify escape routes and reacts to concealed observers at the academy 200 201.
- Teaches Tsunade chakra theory, summoning principles, practical killing skills, and traditional Chinese medicine. His early explanations exceed her understanding, prompting him to adopt practical instruction 194 195 197 225.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Sasori — Family-dinner acquaintance whose unauthorized request for an artificial child Orochimaru refuses 368.
- Junlin — Younger family member who delivers a captured talking head to the Research Institute. Orochimaru advises him that loyalty to Yanbai can secure forgiveness for almost anything 408.
- Other-world Orochimaru — Alternate counterpart who contacts him through Mutsuto’s corpse and identifies himself as one of the Old Woman’s Retainers 492.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Immortality Research and Family Boundaries
After Tobirama’s death, Orochimaru secretly resurrects him and studies Yanbai’s cells in pursuit of immortality. He uses Madara’s cells as a smokescreen, then adopts Tobirama’s mistaken assumption that he intends to create an artificial child. Yanbai sees the weakness in this explanation and directs him toward Cherry Ink instead 238 239 240 241.
Cherry Ink supplies a perfected reincarnation method, sparing Orochimaru the need to invent it through potentially lethal experiments. Orochimaru nevertheless continues pursuing sensitive material under Tobirama’s surveillance and secretly supplies Cherry Ink with the Strongman’s Cells for a gene-synthesis experiment 246 247 251 254.
Later, when Sasori asks for a child made from his own cells and Yanbai’s, Orochimaru refuses. He explains that artificial-human procedures require donor consent, eligibility, and formal approval, and cites the family’s retaliation against unauthorized creation of Muye and Silver Moon 368.
Konoha’s Technological Development
Orochimaru becomes a priority-protected technological talent whose work supports agriculture, manufacturing, transport, public infrastructure, and village surveillance. His outlook shifts far from using shinobi abilities solely for combat: he also wants ordinary citizens equipped with technologies capable of countering ninjutsu 195 271 279 303.
Alternate Counterpart and Final Farewell
An Orochimaru from another world contacts his shadow clone through Mutsuto’s corpse, remarking on this version’s fear of death and good fortune in becoming Yanbai’s child 492.
When Yanbai and Madara choose to die together, Yanbai entrusts the aftermath to Orochimaru. The family helps Tobirama settle their resurrected loved ones, while Orochimaru lingers at the sealed Princess Mausoleum before saying farewell. His inner voice warns him that Itachi is still watching over Yanbai 497.
Notable Quotes

“As long as Mom is here, I'm fine.” 187
“Yes. Even if Mother knows, he won't mind. Being afraid of death isn't a bad trait.” 492
Trivia
- Chinese becomes his native language because everyone in Yanbai’s simulated upbringing speaks it; Japanese is the language he uses to communicate with Tobirama after returning 182.
- Entering the Ninja Academy marks his third experience of beginning elementary school 197.
- His academy records openly name Madara and Yanbai as guardians. The discovery makes his background intimidating even to teachers accustomed to challenging students’ parents 208 213.
