Background / History

Hashirama grows up as the Senju Clan’s heir during the Warring States period, when children accompany older shinobi on dangerous missions. His mother dies from illness; afterward, Yanbai begins following him almost constantly, behavior Hashirama describes as fear of losing another family member 3 5 19.

He understands that Yanbai’s presence has helped keep Itama and Kawarama alive. As the clan’s fighting worsens, he fears that all his younger brothers—including Yanbai—will eventually be sent onto the battlefield 13.

References to the original course of events identify Hashirama and Madara as Konoha’s future founders and Mito Uzumaki as Hashirama’s future wife. These are future references, not developments already completed during the childhood storyline 3 19 43.

Appearance

• Bowl-cut hairstyle: Madara repeatedly mocks it. Hashirama explains that Yanbai considers the haircut useful because it makes him look approachable and foolish 4 10.

Personality

Hashirama is easygoing, playful, and prone to unintentionally insulting people with earnest, airheaded remarks. His insistence that he is better at skipping stones repeatedly infuriates Madara, while his exaggerated dejection makes Madara feel guilty about scolding him 5 6.

His apparent foolishness does not exclude deliberate mischief. He consciously borrows Yanbai’s tactic of pretending to leave after being rejected, correctly anticipating that Madara will stop him. He also quickly shifts from joking to serious action when a corpse signals danger near their meeting place 6.

He is deeply attached to his younger brothers despite finding Yanbai’s constant surveillance exhausting. He wants occasional privacy, but still plans to bring Yanbai up a cliff so he can enjoy the view. His concern extends to protecting every younger brother “at any cost” 5 13.
