Background / History
Izuna is Tajima’s youngest son and Madara’s only remaining younger brother. His father and brother have held high expectations for him since childhood, and the Uchiha recognize him as a genius ninja. Madara’s other brothers were killed by members of the Senju Clan 14 17 28.
Senju intelligence describes Izuna as a young prodigy who conceals a “cunning and calculating” nature and is greatly favored by his father. These descriptions come from an enemy-clan dossier whose hostile characterizations of the Uchiha draw Yanbai’s skepticism 19.
Appearance
- Youthful features: His face is explicitly described as youthful, though it has lost the liveliness expected of a boy his age 39.
- Two-tomoe Sharingan: His eyes change color and display two tomoe when activated 25 26.
- Clothing: He wears ordinary clothes while searching the Naka River. After those clothes are burned, Yanbai covers him with an outer robe distinct from the Uchiha’s customary dark clothing 24 25 26 39.
Personality
Izuna deeply admires Madara and is protective of his reputation. Although he reports his brother’s secret meetings to Tajima, he refuses to discuss the apparent embrace openly before other clansmen, fearing that ruthless members might use Madara’s private affairs against him 15 17.
His loyalty also leads him to misread Madara’s feelings. He initially believes Yanbai is a wicked girl manipulating his brother, then interprets Madara’s loneliness as romantic longing. Even after reconsidering that explanation, he later suspects an unrequited crush and mistakes Madara’s kitchen-based training for self-reproach 17 21 26 30 33 44.
Izuna prides himself on his iron will, but the fireball ordeal leaves him with severe recurring pain and fear. After Yanbai repeatedly helps the brothers, Izuna becomes torn between obedience to Tajima and protecting their benefactor. His willingness to offer himself as a decoy nevertheless shows that his brother’s survival matters more to him than his own safety 25 26 37 39.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
Izuna awakens a two-tomoe Sharingan unusually early; Tajima considers the achievement remarkable even by his own expectations 25 39.
- Uses it to avoid rocks while falling over a waterfall 29.
- Reveals it to an attacking Hagoromo shinobi, whose momentary hesitation allows Madara to decapitate him; the passage does not identify this as a named technique 29.
- His eyes sometimes activate involuntarily during pain or emotional distress 26 39.
- The awakening does not erase his physical limitations: Madara still considers him too young to confront their pursuers alone 37.
Fire Release
Izuna can perform the Great Fireball Technique 25.
- Launches an enormous fireball into Madara’s dust cloud during their forest ambush, producing a violent explosion 31.
- The technique becomes disastrous at close range when Yanbai clamps his mouth shut, forcing the flames back down his throat 25.
- His relatively small chakra reserves help make that accident survivable with Yanbai’s Restoration Technique 25.
Swordsmanship and Combat
Izuna is recognized for talent in both ninjutsu and taijutsu, and carries a long sword in battle 17 32.
- Conceals himself near Madara’s fight with Hagoromo Nobuyuki, then emerges behind Nobuyuki and drives his sword through his back 32.
- Supports the wounded Madara immediately afterward and helps him retreat 32.
- Participates in counterattacks against the remaining Hagoromo pursuers 33.
Observation and Drawing
Izuna notices Madara’s frequent departures and follows him under Tajima’s orders 12 15.
- Draws an almost perfectly accurate portrait of Yanbai from repeated sightings 17.
- Gives the portrait to Tajima, enabling the clan to investigate the unidentified silver-haired child 17.
- His investigation remains vulnerable to Yanbai’s misdirection, which keeps Hashirama’s involvement hidden 15 17.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Long sword — Used to stab Hagoromo Nobuyuki from behind 32.
- Yanbai’s outer robe — Covers Izuna’s burned clothing and provides effective forest camouflage, helping him evade fatal attacks. It is later cut into strips to bind the brothers’ raft and bandage Madara; Madara ultimately burns the remaining cloth 26 29 33.
Relationships
- Madara Uchiha — Elder brother and the person Izuna admires most. Madara rescues him from drowning, protects him throughout the pursuit, and refuses his offer to act as a decoy. Izuna tends Madara’s wounds and later apologizes for revealing information under Tajima’s technique 15 29 33 37 44.
- Uchiha Tajima — Father and clan head. Izuna initially obeys his surveillance orders, but later struggles to conceal Yanbai’s involvement from him. Tajima uses his Sharingan to obtain the account Izuna cannot willingly give 15 39 41.
- Yanbai — Initially regarded as a dangerous silver-haired girl deceiving Madara. Yanbai causes the fireball accident but also saves Izuna through repeated healing and later assists the brothers’ escape. Izuna comes to regard him as a benefactor and worries about the animal messenger endangered by his disclosure 17 25 30 39 44.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Investigation of Madara
- Follows Madara on Tajima’s orders, but Yanbai repeatedly leads him away from the secret meetings 15.
- Witnesses Yanbai’s staged embrace with Madara and concludes that the silver-haired girl explains his brother’s frequent absences 15.
- Reports the encounter and supplies Yanbai’s portrait without discovering Hashirama’s involvement 17.
- Resolves to find Yanbai after mistaking Madara’s longing for his friends and their meals for romantic distress 21.
Naka River Encounter and Awakening
- Searches the Naka River without informing Madara. After Izuna insults him, Yanbai seizes him by the throat 24 26.
- Attempts the Great Fireball Technique, suffers repeated internal burning and restoration, and awakens his two-tomoe Sharingan 25.
- Awakens to Yanbai’s singing and healing, then experiences returning pain. Yanbai gives him an outer robe and warns him not to tell Madara he was bullied 26.
Hagoromo Pursuit
- Rejoins his guards after they awaken from the poisonous bird-dropping effects, becoming caught in their battle with the Hagoromo Clan 28.
- Escapes pursuing ninja dogs by entering the river, falls over a waterfall, and is rescued by Madara 29.
- Helps Madara kill Nobuyuki and counterattack other pursuers before taking shelter in a cave 32 33.
- Offers to draw enemies away when Hagoromo Ryo burns the surrounding mountains. Madara refuses, and Yanbai’s birds ultimately guide the brothers safely home 37 39.
Interrogation and Yanbai’s Retaliation
- Returns with only minor wounds, leaving him available for Tajima’s questioning while the severely injured Madara collapses 39.
- Claims he awakened his eyes fighting the Hagoromo, but Tajima disproves this using the guards’ testimony and hypnotizes him 39 41.
- Apologizes to Madara for the disclosure. Soon afterward, Tajima makes him read Yanbai’s humiliating records of the clan’s private affairs aloud for over an hour 44 45.
- Realizes alongside Madara that Tajima treats the records as useful intelligence and evidence of Yanbai’s reach, rather than merely an insult 45.
Notable Quotes
“Brother, I won't die. I've awakened the Two-Tomoe Sharingan. Go back to the Clan Grounds and recover. Wait for me at home.” 37
“I'm sorry, Brother. Father used a technique on me. I couldn't resist.” 44
Trivia
- Yanbai recalls a different, original course of events in which Tobirama gravely wounds Izuna and Izuna dies from those injuries. He identifies that death as a turning point in Madara’s personality and a catalyst for his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan; this is not Izuna’s documented fate in the current storyline 25.
