History
Staging the Jarilo-VI Encounter
Sampo planned to draw the Nameless into resolving Jarilo-VI’s Stellaron crisis by letting them discover his deliberately suspicious hiding place in the snow. Aha had already directed Jiang Yu toward him and given Sampo a revelation about a white-haired child whom Sampo interpreted as a fellow Fool 34 41.
The plan immediately went wrong: Jiang Yu persuaded the others to leave Sampo alone, then watched from shelter while he endured the cold. After emerging, Sampo introduced himself as a friendly treasure hunter and prospective business partner. Jiang Yu exposed one flaw in his helpless-merchant act—he had crossed soft snow without leaving footprints—and proposed selling captured Fragmentum creatures as heating devices 40 41 42.
Sampo agreed to guide the group toward Belobog, interested in both the amusement and potential profit of the business. When the Silvermane Guards intercepted them, he tried to flee, only for Jiang Yu to drag him back by the ear and offer him to Gepard for a bounty. Gepard subsequently escorted him to Kliperburg and took him away after introducing the outsiders to Cocolia 44 45 49.
Prison Escape and the Underworld
After escaping the Silvermane Guards’ prison, Sampo tracked down Jiang Yu to collect their agreed share of the reward. Jiang Yu offered him twenty-five Shields out of the group’s two hundred; Sampo accepted only ten, returning the rest for Jiang Yu to buy milk and ice cream 56 60.
That reunion also introduced him to Sampo Corgi, a short-legged Fragmentum creature mimicking his appearance. Jiang Yu recruited him to test its domestication and the broader possibility of using such creatures as labor 60 61 62.
At Backwater Pass, Sampo interrupted the confrontation with Bronya using sleep-inducing smoke bombs. Only he and Jiang Yu remained conscious. The group subsequently reached the Underworld, where Natasha questioned him about bringing Bronya along; Sampo insisted that Jiang Yu had been responsible for that decision 66 69.
Sampo then introduced the Trailblaze Squad to Wildfire and explained the Underworld’s Geomarrow supply and Furnace Core. His usefulness did not spare him suspicion: Dan Heng questioned his ability to cross the sealed district boundary, while Seele rebuked his troublemaking and warned Jiang Yu about trusting him 77 78 80.
Fragmentum Hunting and Guiding Duties
Sampo helped Jiang Yu install tripwire mines in the Goethe Grand Hotel, then accompanied him into Rivet Town to capture Fragmentum creatures. During the hunt, he cut apart a fireball from Flames from Beyond the Universe and later relied on Jiang Yu to intercept Ice of the Outer Universe’s attack 105 110.
At the orphanage, Jiang Yu’s technically truthful explanation made Sampo appear responsible for keeping him out all night. Unable to refute it, Sampo tried to repair his reputation by helping Seele locate medical supplies. He later took the captured Ice of the Outer Universe back by a separate route to avoid frightening townspeople 111 115.
Despite exhaustion, Sampo guided the party to the Mechanical Settlement, explained Svarog’s prospector certification system, and stopped Jiang Yu from cutting through the gate. He left after helping them gain entry, promptly slipping into the snow on his way to bed 118 119 120.
Wildfire later assigned him to guide the squad through the Furnace Core route to the surface. He also fulfilled the squad’s request to meet Welt in the snowfields and informed him that the others had already returned to the Upper District 128 133 145.
Curtain Call and Factory Management
Following the Belobog crisis, Sampo reported to the Tavern through a television in Rivet Town. He praised the Astral Express crew’s story, declined to leave for Epsilon, and warned his colleagues that Jiang Yu could contact Aha at any time. His attempted curtain call to the players was interrupted when Jiang Yu arrived—having asked Aha where to find him—and recruited him as a shopping guide 168.
At Jiang Yu’s request, Sampo received full responsibility for the Fragmentum Industries project’s first production base on Jarilo-VI. He became the guide for the Fragmentum Factory event, teaching the Trailblazer to capture monsters, put them to work, and sell their products 182.
He later identified himself by employee badge as director of Aha’s Fragmentum Factory’s Belobog main plant. In that role, he addressed the imprisoned Phantylia, who had been reduced to fuel for the factory 342.
Penacony Impersonations
The Sampo encountered in Golden Hour was Sparkle in disguise, not the real factory director. While Jiang Yu scolded the impostor for supposedly abandoning work, the real Sampo remained in Belobog feeding Sampo Corgi and correctly suspected that Sparkle had run into him 460 461.
The giant, bomb-throwing Sampo in Sparkle’s Memory Bubble was likewise a dream representation. A later “Sampo” who ambushed the group with smoke, a blade, and illusions was exposed as Sparkle again 466 467 558 559.
During the Charmony Festival, Jiang Yu messaged the real Sampo with a promise of a gift that would make him famous. Sampo’s worried follow-up messages went unanswered 610.
Appearance
Sampo’s approachable face is repeatedly undercut by the impression of a shady merchant 34.
- Build: Tall, with a flamboyant posture and gait 77 109.
- Hair: Neatly styled, flowing dark-blue hair 109.
- Eyes: Narrow, green, and frequently described as foxlike 34 109.
- Clothing: Burgundy vest and tailcoat 77 109.
Personality
Sampo maintains an affable, ingratiating merchant persona, turning suspicion into banter and presenting strangers as friends or prospective partners. His apparent panic, innocence, and reluctance are often deliberate performances rather than reliable indications of what he knows or wants 42 44 77.
He pursues both profit and Elation, treating the Jarilo-VI crisis as a production whose actors he can guide. Nevertheless, he prefers not to occupy the starring role and expresses interest in pleasures connected with human dignity rather than Epsilon’s decadent luxury 41 84 168.
His dishonesty coexists with genuine consideration for children. He brings supplies to the Underworld, plays with its children, gives Jiang Yu considerable leeway, and becomes unhappy when he initially suspects that Jiang Yu has hurt another child. Wildfire dislikes his scams but generally trusts him when it matters 60 77 99.
Jiang Yu repeatedly reverses Sampo’s tricks or leaves him taking the blame. Sampo usually tolerates the humiliation, though he eagerly welcomes chances to watch Jiang Yu become someone else’s problem—especially Sparkle’s 78 111 119.

- Uses a removable human-skin mask to impersonate another adult man 76.

- Cuts apart an incoming fireball from Flames from Beyond the Universe 105.
- Stands his ground against Ice of the Outer Universe because he trusts Jiang Yu to intervene 110.

“This story is dedicated to you, dear audience—I wonder whether you found a little Elation in it?” 168
Trivia
- Jiang Yu’s “Belobog wild man” joke comes from Sampo’s habit of hiding in snowdrifts and appearing or disappearing without a trace—not an established identity as the legendary creature 58.
- Sampo adopts Jiang Yu’s irreverent “Aha damn it” phrasing and later passes the catchphrases on to the Tavern 62 168.
- “Sampo was also still awake” becomes a recurring audience joke and the contact name Jiang Yu assigns him on his phone 461 610.
- His fourth-wall remarks extend beyond addressing players: while speaking to Phantylia, he explicitly mentions “the readers reading this book” 342.
