Background / History
Sorcerer Supreme and the search for a successor
The Ancient One has protected Earth from magical-dimensional incursions for centuries, sustaining her life with Dormammu’s energy because she could not find a suitable successor. She identifies Strange as her intended replacement and initially explains that his succession would allow her to stop absorbing dark energy, grow old, and die naturally—not die immediately upon retiring 29 35.
S.H.I.E.L.D. lists her as an S-class priority target, suspects that she possesses a unique energy source, and records her refusal to join the Avengers. Her responsibilities include Earth’s magical protection and guardianship of the Time Stone 17.
Recruitment and instruction of Mercer
The Ancient One comes to investigate Loki’s Royal Guard arriving on Earth, only to find that Alex Mercer has already driven the army away. She invites him for tea and questions his extraordinary abilities, future knowledge, and familiarity with people he has never met 28.
Her previously clear visions of the future have become blurred, and she traces the disruption to Mercer. He confirms that he arrived from outside the universe alone but refuses to disclose his origin. Her central request is that he help Strange if the future accident prevents him from becoming a suitable successor—even killing him if he becomes dangerous 29.
In exchange for Mercer’s promise, she grants him access to the Sanctum Sanctorum’s magical books. She introduces him to artifact-based magic, assigns Mordo as his sparring partner, and gives him a Sling Ring after he struggles to channel magic through the Living Tribunal Staff 30 31.
She accompanies Mercer to investigate an extraterrestrial slime and meets Galacta, whose connection to Galactus alarms her. After returning to the Sanctum Sanctorum, she explains how sorcerers obtain energy from other dimensions 31 32 33.
The Hydra trap
The Ancient One warns Mercer that Hydra is attempting to summon a Sub-Dimensional Being. Claiming that she cannot leave the Sanctum Sanctorum unguarded, she supplies the Book of the Vishanti to prepare him. His Sharingan allows him to master its spells with proficiency comparable to hers, astonishing her and briefly making her consider him a better successor than Strange 35 36.
The warning conceals a trap. A Hydra member identifies a bald woman as the source of the summoning spell, and Mercer discovers his own lightning circulating through the Magic Array beneath the Tesseract. The Ancient One later confirms that she arranged the Great Old One’s summoning to eliminate him, using most of Dormammu’s power and the Time Stone to examine the only future she could still see 45 46 48 49.
Exposure and defeat
Mercer stages his death with All Things in the Universe, an illusion from the book she gave him. Believing her principal obstacle removed, the Ancient One takes the apparent Tesseract, admits her assassination plot, and announces her intention to rule Earth. She subdues Carter and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents before Mercer’s concealed trap engulfs her in the Tesseract’s energy 48 49.
Life-preserving runes keep her alive and heal her blast wounds. She reveals Dormammu’s mark and corrupts nearby agents with darkness, but Mercer reverses the corruption and removes the bystanders. Her attempt to escape through a Sling Ring Portal fails because she is inside a Tesseract-created dimension under his control 49 50.
Unable to escape or overcome his counters, she surrenders and offers to follow him. Mercer instead throws her into the Great Old One’s lair, hoping that handing over the architect of the attack will reduce the creature’s incentive to invade Earth again. The Hero Card System then issues a mission to rescue her 50.
Appearance
The Ancient One is bald and has no eyebrows. Her voice carries an elegant British accent described as refined and noble 28.
- Clothing: Wears a fitted yellow outfit when she arrives to claim the Tesseract; summons black garments after the resulting explosion destroys her clothing 48 49.
- Dormammu’s mark: Appears at the center of her forehead and spreads across her face when she openly invokes his power 49.
- Protective runes: Black markings cover her body after the explosion and flow into her wounds as they heal 49.
Personality
Initially, the Ancient One is composed, courteous, and observant. She responds calmly to Mercer’s threatening display of lightning and identifies his outsider status through discrepancies between his supposed identity and his knowledge. She also recognizes the risk of teaching him magic: doing so could make her own spells ineffective against him 28 29 30.
Her apparent concern for succession is pragmatic rather than sentimental. She wants relief from centuries of responsibility and is willing to authorize Strange’s death if he becomes a threat. She accepts Mercer’s verbal promise rather than demanding a restrictive magical pact from someone she has only just met 29 30.
Her later conduct exposes contempt for the people she once protected and a desire for domination. She treats S.H.I.E.L.D.’s resistance as beneath her, celebrates Mercer’s apparent death, and insists that she is making better use of Dormammu’s power rather than being consumed by it. Once defeated, her arrogance gives way to desperate bargaining 48 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
Master Sorcery
The Ancient One possesses centuries of magical study and has spent that time deciphering spells Mercer later learns almost instantly 36.
- Creates golden magic-circle weapons and black-and-gold offensive Magic Arrays 32 50.
- Uses invisible force to throw Carter aside, disarm agents, and pin a group to their knees 48.
- Fires powerful magical beams and uses an immediate explosion to create distance from Mercer 50.
- Her combat spells are developed from the Book of the Vishanti; Mercer’s knowledge of its principles and his Mangekyo Sharingan allow him to counter them 50.
Future Observation
She uses the Eye of Agamotto and Time Stone to examine future events 29 49.
- Identifies Mercer’s arrival as the cause of the timeline becoming obscured 29.
- Expends most of Dormammu’s power to glimpse the only visible future and plan her assassination attempt 49.
- Her predictions do not account successfully for Mercer’s abilities and eventual survival 46 49.
Sling Ring Portals
Her Sling Ring opens golden portals for travel and access to distant objects 28 49.
- Transports Mercer to her study and accompanies him to the slime’s landing site 28 31.
- Summons replacement clothing through a portal 49.
- Cannot escape Mercer’s sealed, Tesseract-created dimension through teleportation 49 50.
Dormammu’s Power
Energy drawn from Dormammu sustains her longevity and amplifies her sorcery 29 50.
- Allows her to survive for hundreds of years beyond ordinary human cultivation limits 29 33.
- Produces spreading darkness that corrupts S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, turning their eyes entirely black 49.
- Mercer blocks the darkness with the Tesseract and cleanses the affected agents with Vishanti magic 49.
- She denies being consumed by Dormammu, despite Mercer interpreting her transformation that way 49.
Life-Preserving Protection
She previously established an emergency protection at enormous magical cost. The Tesseract explosion activates it, and black runes rapidly close her wounds 49.
- This protection does not make her physically invulnerable: her body is only somewhat tougher than an ordinary human’s, and gunshots or stab wounds can still be fatal 49.
- She offers to heal Mercer if Mordo injures him during training, though that healing is not demonstrated in the session 31.

Relationships
- Alex Mercer — Recruits him as a safeguard against a dangerous Strange and becomes his magical instructor. Their cooperation ends when her assassination plot is exposed 29 30 48 50.
- Strange — Intended successor. She fears that his accident may prevent him from fulfilling the role or cause him to go astray 29 35.
- Dormammu — Source of her centuries-long survival and later heightened dark power. She claims to be exploiting his strength rather than surrendering to it 29 49.
- Mordo — Sorcerer under her direction; assigned to help Mercer channel magic through combat 30 31.
