Background / History
Mercer is a transmigrator who arrived several months before the story begins, taking over the body of an ordinary Chinese American high school junior living with a foster family. He recognizes the world as a version of the Marvel universe, but discovers a major departure from the history he remembers: Peggy Carter, rather than Steve Rogers, became Captain America. This altered timeline makes his knowledge of future events unreliable 1.
Before gaining powers, he struggles to find steady employment because of discrimination. With only three hundred dollars remaining and two hundred dollars due in rent, he faces eviction and survives largely on milk and discounted bread. Carter pays his rent and leaves him food in her apartment; Abomination crashes into the building while Mercer is eating her beef stew 1.
Appearance
- Features: A handsome young man with distinctly Chinese features and a sharply defined profile 3 5.
- Natural eyes: Unusual blue-green irises. Carter says they resemble the eyes of someone from her past; Mercer believes she means Steve Rogers 1.
- Public concealment: Wears a hood during his first public battle, preventing spectators from obtaining a clear photograph of his face 3.
- Sharingan: Blood-red irises with tomoe markings; initially one tomoe, later three, followed by a unique evolved form 34 36 47.
- Transformation: Can replace his facial features and assume other appearances, so his visible identity is not fixed 9 10 39.
Personality
Mercer is pragmatic about both survival and public opinion. Although the Blacklight Virus urges him to consume Abomination, he initially refuses because doing so before a crowd would cause panic and risk making him a public enemy. He similarly rejects Lockdown’s proposal to slaughter Hydra members without first exposing their crimes 3 13.
He prefers cooperation when it is useful, but responds ruthlessly to attacks. He monitors Fury rather than immediately treating S.H.I.E.L.D. as an enemy, accepts honorary membership, and answers Carter’s requests for help. Against assassins and the corrupted Ancient One, however, he uses lethal force without pretending to be weaker than he is 6 9 15 37 50.
His concern for others is selective but genuine. Recognizing his favorite version of Peter Parker, he resolves to prevent the tragedies involving Gwen Stacy and her father. He also insists on confronting the Great Old One’s tentacles himself because he considers the crisis his responsibility, rather than simply having Galacta defeat them 41 46.
Mercer enjoys humor, simple food, and testing his abilities in combat. Wealth does not change his enthusiasm for cola and fried chicken, while opponents such as Loki and the Asgardian warriors become opportunities to refine his techniques 15 22 26.
Abilities & Skills
Infinite Hero Card System
The system supplies cards, collection missions, achievement rewards, and access to abilities or objects from other worlds 4 7 18 25 30.
- Can turn a sample of his Blacklight Virus into a Hero Card displaying its properties 4.
- Grants a collection mission to gather thunder power before Thor regains Mjolnir 18.
- Provides a telepathic connection between a cardholder and a card’s contents, allowing Mercer to communicate with and summon Lockdown 13.
- Offers rewards tied to specific tasks, including an Item Card for learning a spell at the Sanctum Sanctorum 30.
- Does not make every card ability permanent: the Battle-Damaged Kotoamatsukami card contains energy sufficient for only one use 25.
Blacklight Virus
A supervirus capable of absorbing life and energy and evolving without a known ceiling. Its card carries a level of ∞; this rating belongs to the virus, not to a stated overall rank for Mercer 4.
- Superhuman physique: Throws the several-ton Abomination out of a building, launches him skyward with a punch, and delivers rapid strikes that penetrate his defenses 2 3.
- Enhanced perception: Sees fast attacks as slowed movements and easily follows ordinary soldiers’ actions 2 10.
- Autonomous protection: Detects a sniper’s killing intent and moves its host out of the bullet’s path 8.
- Mobility: Supports enormous leaps, gliding, wall-running, and effortless movement between buildings 3 8.
- Physical weapons: Forms claws, thrown blades, shields, armor, and additional limbs. His claws cut reinforced walls and Abomination-resistant prison bars; a hand formed from his back restrains a Destroyer 4 5 6 9 26.
- Detached surveillance: Leaves a small mass of Blacklight matter behind to monitor Fury’s office; it later catches up and rejoins him 6.
- Energy adaptation: Develops tolerance through controlled absorption of Kyber Crystal energy. Mercer performs this test before considering dangerous sources such as the Infinity Stones 13.
- Control limitation: Initially struggles to moderate his strength; even a punch reduced to one-tenth power ruins an ordinary assassin’s forearms 9.
Absorption, Memory Acquisition, and Disguise
Consuming organisms gives Mercer access to their physical traits, skills, memories, and appearances. Small samples yield only limited information, while complete consumption provides more extensive access 4 9 11.
- Gains fluent English and elite special-forces combat techniques from Abomination’s blood 4.
- Locates Abomination’s safe house through his memories 11.
- Confirms a sniper’s Hydra affiliation by consuming him and reviewing his memories 9.
- Identifies disguised Hydra sentries through habits familiar from an absorbed assassin 41.
- Creates faces beyond those of consumed individuals, including a painted depiction of Satan used to frighten a Hydra soldier 10.
- Changes among several ordinary-looking faces without detectable makeup or disguise materials 39.
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
Mercer’s lightning abilities support elemental transformation, high-speed movement, energy constructs, and attacks that can be combined with Blacklight weapons 20 24 26.
- Lightning body: Disperses into lightning and later reassembles into human form 20 22.
- Distributed senses: Detects the concealed Loki by spreading his awareness throughout the room while transformed 20.
- Constructs: Creates armor, a fitted trench coat, battle-axes, orbs, and chains from lightning 24 26 32 46.
- Combined attacks: Coats Blacklight Claws in lightning to inflict cuts and electrical burns together; also enhances the Dark Saber with controlled lightning 26.
- Remote sword control: Uses a lightning chain to wield the Dark Saber while airborne, extending its reach and severing three tentacles before landing 46.
- Power limit: His lightning cannot reach the Dark Saber’s stated temperature of two hundred million degrees 46.
Sharingan and Susanoo
Mercer’s card-granted Sharingan adapts to his circumstances: learning magic advances it, while extreme rage triggers its later evolution 34 36 47.
- The initial Sharingan improves night vision and offers illusion-related abilities, but much of its normal perceptual benefit overlaps with his existing Blacklight enhancement 34.
- Chakra observation and ninjutsu copying have little immediate value to him because people in this universe do not possess chakra 34.
- Learns the first spell in the Book of the Vishanti after a single glance 36.
- His evolved eyes can absorb energy from his Blacklight Virus and Rumble-Rumble Fruit 47.
- Manifests a deep-purple skeletal giant identified as Susanoo 48.
Magic and Spatial Control
Absorbing Asgardians provides the magical talent that allows Mercer to study sorcery. He subsequently learns the entire Book of the Vishanti, though he acknowledges that he has not fully mastered its power 30 36 47.
- Fourfold Suppression: A high-level sealing spell that drops four massive dark-gold blocks onto a target. Galacta breaks it without injury 37.
- Boundless Lockdown: Envelops the gymnasium during the summoning crisis 45 48.
- All Things in the Universe: Uses this Vishanti spell in the deception that conceals him and Galacta from the Ancient One 49.
- Tesseract-created space: Constructs a separate dimension under his control, where the Ancient One’s teleportation magic cannot function 50.
- Energy limitation: Before receiving Galacta’s support, he can cast only two or three spells at once, with limited power and range 45.
- External support: Galacta supplies the energy required for his larger-scale spellcasting during the gymnasium battle 45 46.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dark Saber — His primary weapon. Its Kyber-powered blade cuts an armored van in half and slices through the Destroyers’ Uru bodies. Mercer also uses its energy to develop Blacklight resistance 10 13 19 26 27.
- Lockdown card — Provides the robotic assassin Lockdown, whose vehicle form is a Lamborghini Aventador. Mercer uses him for transportation and communicates with him telepathically 7 8 13.
- Kotoamatsukami Battle-Damaged Card — Achievement reward with enough chakra for a single use. It does not grant a permanent ability, and Mercer cannot replenish its chakra from nothing 25.
- S.H.I.E.L.D. credentials — Level-eight identification delivered by Carter; gives him access to the restricted Mjolnir site 15 17 19.
- Tesseract — Uses it to conceal himself and Galacta and to construct the controlled space in which he confronts the Ancient One 49 50.
- Captured sniper rifle — Takes the Hydra assassin’s rifle as a collectible rather than as a needed weapon 9.
- Living Tribunal Staff — Temporarily uses the magical artifact while training with Mordo; initially struggles to channel magic into it 30 31.
Relationships
- Peggy Carter — Neighbor, benefactor, and S.H.I.E.L.D. contact. Pays his rent, feeds him, protects his identity after the Abomination fight, and later recruits his help against Hydra 1 3 15 37.
- Nick Fury — Negotiating partner and recruiter. Cooperates over Abomination’s custody and arranges Mercer’s honorary membership; instructs Coulson to accommodate him 5 6 15 19.
- Natasha — S.H.I.E.L.D. associate who witnesses his blade control and later his disguises, which leave her unable to identify signs of ordinary undercover makeup 5 39.
- Lockdown — Card-linked companion who addresses him as “Creator,” serves as his vehicle, and proposes violent retaliation against Hydra 13.
- Galacta — Companion, sparring partner, and source of energy. Agrees to stay with him in exchange for food and becomes a safeguard against threats beyond his current power 32 33 37 45.
- Ancient One — Initially a host and magical instructor. Asks for help concerning Strange’s future, then becomes an enemy after her attempt to kill Mercer is exposed and her corruption by Dormammu is revealed 29 30 46 48 49.
- Loki — Opponent whose concealment Mercer exposes. Later attacks him with Asgardian warriors and Destroyers 20 26.
- Thor — Witness to Mercer’s battle with the Asgardians. Regains divine power, thanks Mercer, and returns to Asgard 26 27 28.
- Peter Parker — A hero Mercer recognizes as his favorite The Amazing Spider-Man incarnation. Mercer helps him against Wallace and privately vows to prevent his remembered losses 41 43.
- Tony Stark — Becomes interested in Mercer through footage of the Dark Saber and Lockdown; eventually meets him during S.H.I.E.L.D.’s investigation 11 38.
- Rogers — Hydra-controlled attacker with a metal arm whom Mercer restrains after an assassination attempt. Mercer recognizes his renewed aggression as the result of brainwashing 15 16 17.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Abomination and the End of Poverty
Abomination’s intrusion triggers Mercer’s first power activation. Mercer defeats him publicly but conceals his face and avoids openly consuming him. After negotiating with S.H.I.E.L.D., he destroys the detention room’s cameras, kills Abomination, and absorbs his body 1 2 3 5 6.
Hydra’s subsequent sniper attack confirms that Mercer has become a target. He consumes the assassin, survives another attack involving an armored van, and demonstrates the Dark Saber’s destructive power. Abomination’s memories then lead him to a safe house containing millions in cash and Swiss accounts holding at least ten million dollars each, allowing him to purchase a villa 8 9 10 11.
S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Asgardian Conflict
Mercer accepts honorary S.H.I.E.L.D. membership but remains free to choose whether to assist the agency. Using his credentials, he enters the New Mexico site containing Mjolnir and collects lightning power rather than successfully lifting the hammer 15 19.
His new lightning abilities reveal Loki’s presence. The conflict escalates into combat against Asgardian warriors and two Destroyers, which Mercer dismantles with lightning and the Dark Saber. Thor regains his power and leaves for Asgard, while Mercer proceeds to an unexpected meeting with the Ancient One 20 26 27 28.
Sorcery and Galacta
The Ancient One identifies Mercer as an outsider whose arrival has obscured the timeline she could previously observe. He agrees to help with the danger surrounding her future successor, Strange, on the condition that he can browse her magical books 29 30.
During his stay, Mercer persuades Galacta to accompany him by offering food. He gains the Sharingan, learns Vishanti magic, and uses sparring with Galacta to test his growing repertoire before Carter calls him back to assist with Hydra 32 33 34 36 37.
School Infiltration and the Ancient One’s Betrayal
Mercer disguises himself to investigate Hydra operatives at a school, where he encounters Peter Parker. The investigation leads to a Tesseract-powered summoning that brings a Great Old One’s tentacles into the gymnasium rather than the expected Loki. With Galacta providing energy, Mercer contains the area and fights the intruding limbs 39 41 43 45 46.
Learning that the Ancient One orchestrated the crisis drives his Sharingan’s next evolution. After the battle, Mercer and Galacta stage the scene and conceal themselves, drawing out the Ancient One’s admission that she intended to kill him. Her reliance on Dormammu’s power is exposed 46 47 48 49.
Mercer traps her in a Tesseract-created dimension, defeats her, and sends her into the Great Old One’s lair. He describes the exile as retaliation and hopes that offering her to the creature will reduce the risk of another invasion 50.
