Background / History

Loki is Odin’s second son and Thor’s younger sibling. His relationship with Thor is hostile: Thor recalls him transforming into her favorite snake, waiting until she picked him up, then changing back and stabbing her in the stomach. While her divine power previously made such attacks survivable, she fears that another stabbing would kill her after her banishment leaves her mortal 22 23.

Before his confrontation with Mercer, Loki accompanied Thor to suppress an invasion of Middle-earth by forces from the Flame Realm. During that campaign, he used his own Hexagonal Force Matrix to enable a small group of ordinary Asgardian Warriors to surround and kill a Lava Dragon, astonishing the witnesses. The formation became one of his proudest spells 25.

Loki also selected and trained his own Royal Guard, teaching its warriors magic alongside their martial abilities. He later brought more than a hundred of these troops to Earth to avenge his defeat by Mercer 24 25.

Appearance

  • Asgardian attire: Manifests around him in wisps of golden light 20.
  • Crown: Brilliant gold, with horns resembling a ram’s 20.
  • Weapon: Carries an ornate spear during his first confrontation with Mercer 20.

Personality

Loki regards Earth as primitive and inferior, arriving with the intention of ruling it. Being beaten by someone he considers an Earthling is deeply humiliating to him. He presents retaliation as a defense of Asgard’s dignity, although Mercer openly accuses him of bringing reinforcements because he lost their first fight 21 24.

His pride does not prevent tactical retreat or recognition of an opponent’s strength. He admires Mercer’s pure-lightning body and calls him the “true God of Thunder,” but escapes when faced with the Thunder Beast. After his army also fails, he acknowledges that he miscalculated and withdraws while promising that their conflict is not over 21 22 27.

Abilities & Skills

Asgardian Physiology and Divine Power

Loki possesses strength and endurance beyond ordinary humans, though his physical prowess is described as unexceptional by Asgardian standards 21.

  • Survives lightning strikes that throw him through multiple layers of the surrounding structure 20.
  • Channels divine power to resist electricity coursing through his body and recover from convulsions 21.
  • Is driven backward and left with numb hands when Mercer’s lightning hammer overpowers his spear attack 21.

Offensive Sorcery

Loki fights primarily with magic rather than relying on daggers, identifying himself as the “First Wizard of the Nine Realms” 21.

  • Creates a large golden magic circle beneath his feet and additional airborne circles that fire beams 21.
  • Forms a hexagram behind himself to release a much larger golden beam 21.
  • Infuses his spear with golden energy and launches an attack that multiplies into numerous apparent Lokis and spears 21.
  • Cannot find an effective counter to Mercer dispersing his body into pure lightning to evade attacks 21.

Concealment and Transformation

Loki uses magic both to hide his presence and to disguise his form 20 23.

  • Conceals himself in a corner near Mjolnir while humans enter the site 20.
  • His concealment is exposed when Mercer’s lightning-dispersed senses detect his unusual internal energy 20.
  • Can transform into a snake convincingly enough to deceive Thor 23.

Hexagonal Force Matrix

Loki created this formation to concentrate several warriors’ magical power against a stronger individual 25.

  • Arranges fighters into six linked groups, supported by spellcasters using magic scepters 25.
  • Enhances physical strength and defense; five corners can transfer their magic to whichever corner is attacking 25.
  • Incorporates older Asgardian script and scripts from other worlds, making its incantations difficult for outsiders to reproduce 26.
  • Its secrecy fails when Mercer absorbs the memories of Loki’s warriors and casts a weaker version himself 25 26.

Military Command

Loki coordinates magically trained Royal Guard Warriors and Asgardian Destroyers 24 26.

  • Orders his guards into formations and directs supporting spellcasters to increase their magical output 25 26.
  • Redirects the guards’ support magic toward the Destroyers when Mercer begins wearing down the formation 26.
  • Calls Heimdall for Bifrost extraction when his first battle turns against him 22.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spear / scepter — Used to channel magic and deliver empowered attacks; his weapon is described as a spear during the initial duel and as a scepter during his withdrawal 20 21 27.
  • Golden horned crown — Part of his manifested Asgardian attire 20.
  • Two Destroyers — Deploys two of Asgard’s four Uru constructs against Mercer. They feel no pain and fire high-heat beams, but Mercer decapitates one and cuts the other in half; their remains are retrieved during Loki’s retreat 24 26 27.

Relationships

  • Odin — Father and Asgard’s authority over royal succession. Odin’s enchantment prevents Loki from taking Mjolnir 20 22 24.
  • Thor — Older sister and rival. Loki has attacked her through deception; after regaining her divine power, she returns to Asgard to deal with him 23 28.
  • Alex Mercer — Enemy who exposes his concealment, defeats him in single combat, and repels his retaliatory army. Loki threatens further revenge before leaving 20 22 24 27.
  • Royal Guard Warriors — Personally selected and trained subordinates. Five are absorbed by Mercer, costing Loki soldiers and exposing the matrix’s incantations 24 25 26.
  • Heimdall — Answers Loki’s call and transports him away through the Bifrost 22.
  • Hydra / Vermier — Hydra attempts to summon Loki as an evil god; Vermier expects his arrival to force Earth’s inhabitants into allegiance 40.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Confrontation at Mjolnir

  • Mercer interprets Mjolnir’s arrival in New Mexico as a sign that Loki’s invasion is approaching. His expectation of an alliance with Thanos and a Chitauri invasion comes from remembered events, not an invasion shown in the supplied chapters 17.
  • Loki secretly visits the hammer to see whether he can lift it. While concealed, he witnesses Mercer’s card absorbing its energy and Mercer eating the Rumble-Rumble Fruit 20.
  • After Mercer exposes and attacks him, Loki invokes Asgard’s authority and later commands the nearby humans to worship him as their new king 20 21.
  • Mercer overcomes his magic with a lightning body and lightning weapons. Loki escapes through the Bifrost before the Thunder Beast can reach him 21 22.

Retaliatory Assault

  • Loki returns that night with two Destroyers and more than a hundred Royal Guard Warriors. Thor assumes the force is meant to kill her, but Loki identifies Mercer as his target 24.
  • Mercer absorbs five guards and copies the Hexagonal Force Matrix. Loki correctly deduces that he obtained the spell through their memories 25 26.
  • After Mercer dismantles both Destroyers, Loki withdraws with his forces and the constructs’ remains. Thor subsequently regains Mjolnir and returns to Asgard to confront him 26 27 28.

Hydra’s Summoning Attempt

  • Vermier reveals that Hydra’s ritual is intended to summon Loki. Mercer and S.H.I.E.L.D. react without the fear he expects because they already know about Loki and his defeat 40.
  • Mercer interrupts the ritual by killing the chanting operative, Manton. The Tesseract apparatus then opens an uncontrolled portal from which Great Old One tentacles emerge; Loki is not shown arriving 44.
