Background / History
Yang Wuzheng traveled to gain experience alongside his junior brother, Yan Wushuang, with the Primordial Ancient Mine as their destination. Before meeting Li Qingyue, he had helped villagers who thanked him but also feared his power 10 14.
While passing through a region devastated by massacres, he sought out a bandit stronghold to eliminate the threat. He understood that the Feathered Divine Dynasty’s sweeping actions lay behind the wider chaos, but later only suspected that the stronghold itself had the dynasty’s backing after learning it possessed the Dao Scripture 9 13.
Appearance
- White clothing: Introduced as a young man dressed in white; his figure contrasts with Yan Wushuang’s golden radiance during their first exchange 9 10.
- Relatively slight build: His clothes fit Li Qingyue better than those of the much taller Yan Wushuang, though they remain too long 15.
- Tranquil bearing: His gaze and expression usually appear calm and uncontentious. In movement, he seems to blend into heaven and earth, drifting backward like a falling leaf 10 15.
Personality
Yang Wuzheng is tranquil, detached, and reluctant to argue. He ordinarily lets minor disagreements pass with a smile and prefers allowing relationships to develop naturally. For him, affection does not require possession: quietly protecting and caring for someone can be enough 10 15 23.
His compassion is tempered by respect for Li Qingyue’s resolve. When villagers fear her after she saves them, he tells her the truth rather than softening it. He argues that Yan Wushuang’s instinct to shelter her does not fully account for her strength or what she needs 14 15. Later, he allows her dangerous cultivation experiment to continue under supervision, reasoning that stopping her once would not end her determination 38.
His growing affection also exposes jealousy beneath his composure. He clenches a handkerchief when Yan Wushuang tends to Li Qingyue first, becomes unusually argumentative over her care, and takes satisfaction in Yan’s jealousy during their zither lesson 15 41. Nevertheless, he accepts the Tianquan Saint’s hospitality rather than letting their rivalry leave her hungry 44.
Abilities & Skills
Innate Dao Body
His constitution is naturally close to the Dao and sensitive to changes in nature, contributing to his unusually perceptive mind 12 15.
- Allows him to move and fight as though his body merges with the surrounding earth and heaven 10.
- Supports combat strength comparable to Yan Wushuang’s Human Sacred Body; he does not fear a direct fight with his junior brother 10 36.
- Does not grant unrestricted Dao comprehension. He admits that Li Qingyue’s ability to sustain enlightenment as a mortal exceeds his own, and that he lacks sufficient power to sustain such enlightenment himself 19.
Divine Power and Combat
Yang Wuzheng can release destructive divine radiance and concentrate immense force into his strikes 9 10.
- Destroys the bandit stronghold, including its buildings and corpses, with a sweep of his sleeve 9.
- Meets Yan Wushuang’s fist with a mountain-like blow; their collision sinks the ground and splits it with cracks 10.
- Flies Li Qingyue back to Stone Village 9.
- Suffers substantial injuries and exhaustion during his later sparring match with Yan Wushuang, showing that their rivalry has real physical costs 16 18.
Dao Patterns and Cultivation Instruction
He understands conventional cultivation and can explain the Bitter Sea, Wheel of Life, divine power, and life essence 13.
- Demonstrates that source-stone power can activate Li Qingyue’s otherwise inert Fire-Element Dao Patterns 17.
- Imprints Dao Patterns through divine-power-infused footsteps, sealing a room and containing leaking source essence 38.
- Recognizes that Flying Dragon Ridge’s feng shui has been reversed, turning an auspicious site into a destructive domain that worsens as people die 46.
Zither Playing and the Wuzheng Melody
Yang Wuzheng combines musical skill, divine power, and his Innate Dao Body’s talents in the Wuzheng Melody 10 12.
- Usually dispels ordinary people’s sorrow and restores enthusiasm for the future 10.
- Cannot erase Li Qingyue’s grief, despite slightly improving her mood 9 10 12.
- Teaches eight finger techniques: inward stroke, outward flick, inward hook, outward pluck, thumb sweep, thumb lift, downward strike, and upward pick 41.
- Uses variations in force and speed during zither practice to help Li Qingyue master her newly increased strength in one night 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ancient Zither — His treasured teaching instrument, which he gives to Li Qingyue after their overnight lesson 41.
- Fuxi Zither — A slightly illusory, nine-stringed zither revealed among the group’s Saint Weapons. Its notes manifest Dao resonance, dragon and phoenix forms, and spatial distortion. Onlookers identify it with Fuxi’s legendary instrument; the claim that Fuxi personally forged it is presented as rumor 48.
- Dao Scripture, Sea of Bitterness Chapter — A copy he produces when offering to explain cultivation to Li Qingyue 13.
- Heaven and Earth Dao Patterns — A book he gives Li Qingyue when she seeks a way to understand the world despite her Waste Body 13.
- Source stones and storage artifact — Supplies source power for Li Qingyue’s experiments and lends Yan Wushuang additional stones for her treasured garment 17 23.
- Moon-white robes — Clothing he offers Li Qingyue to replace her bloodstained garments; the first outfit bears dust-avoiding Dao Patterns 9 10 15.
Relationships
- Li Qingyue — Traveling companion, student, and the object of his growing affection. She trusts him for protection and says that he and Yan Wushuang treat her better than anyone except her brother. His belief that her warm gaze signals romantic interest is not confirmed; during the lesson, she is remembering her brother and knows she cannot reciprocate his affection 25 36 41.
- Yan Wushuang — Junior sect brother, close friend, sparring partner, and romantic rival. Their disagreements can lead to exhausting fights, but Yang continues supporting him, including lending source stones and respecting his right to settle a duel without interference 10 15 16 23 34.
- Junior Sister Lingwei — Fellow disciple said to have deep feelings for him. Yang responds that it is best to let matters take their course 10.
- Tianquan Saint — Fellow expedition member and rival for Li Qingyue’s attention. Yang watches his approaches warily but accepts his hospitality for her benefit 42 44.
- Tianxuan Saintess and Yaoguang Holy Son — Expedition companions who cooperate with him to protect Li Qingyue while crossing Flying Dragon Ridge 42 48.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Li Qingyue
After destroying the bandit stronghold, Yang introduces himself, offers replacement clothing, and takes Li Qingyue home. He watches without interfering as she buries Stone Village’s dead, then attempts to comfort her through music. Following Yan Wushuang’s arrival, both men invite her to accompany them toward the Primordial Ancient Mine 9 10 12.
Helping Her Find a Cultivation Path
Yang becomes an early instructor for Li Qingyue, explaining the Dao Scripture and supplying the Dao Patterns text that gives her an alternative avenue of study. His source-stone demonstration helps her realize that external source power can activate patterns despite her inability to open her Bitter Sea 13 17.
In Ancient Source City, he helps shield her from unwanted attention and supervises her source-powered cultivation experiment. After her strength surges beyond her control, his overnight zither instruction gives her a practical way to regulate it 25 27 38 40 41.
Primordial Ancient Mine Expedition
Yang joins the Holy Land heirs investigating the ancient tomb. Inside Flying Dragon Ridge, he diagnoses the reversed feng shui and later deploys the Fuxi Zither alongside the others’ Saint Weapons. Their combined defenses carry Li Qingyue through hundreds of li of lethal grave mounds, but leave the heirs wounded and their weapons depleted 42 46 48.
When Dao Palace cultivators subsequently approach Li Qingyue, Yang and Yan Wushuang try to rise and intervene despite their condition. Her ensuing counterattack reveals strength beyond what they expected 50.
