Background / History

Pirate Career and Shipwreck

Tracy had spent years at sea and previously operated alone. She became known for her beauty, sudden illnesses inflicted on enemies, and use of curses, black fire, frost, and seduction 123 147.

When an unnatural storm struck, she was commanding a recently captured vessel rather than her flagship. She recognized the weather as the work of Beyonder powers and ordered her crew to discard cargo and escape, but lightning struck the ship and hurled her into the sea. The Black Death remained moored in her private harbor near Bayam 123 142.

Voyage with Brando

Tracy survived alongside Lorne, who introduced himself as Brando, and Lucky. Stranded on a raft, she attempted to use her charms to gain favors and avoid rowing, but Lorne resisted. Her severe injuries left her afraid of encountering rival pirates, ambitious subordinates, or fellow Demonesses who might exploit her vulnerability 125 126.

Lorne treated a serious burn on her back with his limited supplies, telling her that she owed him two lives. His refusal to fear or flatter her distinguished him from the men she had encountered since becoming a Demoness 127.

The pair seized the Blood Shark. Tracy subdued its crew, but hurriedly silenced the captain when he recognized her, unwilling to let Lorne learn that she was a notorious pirate. Her disease ability also accidentally weakened Lorne because he was within its range 129.

They subsequently explored an unfamiliar island containing ruins and a mural of the Creator and the Blasphemy Slate. Tracy grew jealous when Lorne photographed the mural for Edwina Edwards. During the island’s destruction, Lorne carried the injured Tracy away despite her expectation that she would die 131 135.

Afterward, Lorne offered her half of the recovered Beyonder materials, worth at least tens of thousands of pounds. Tracy saw the treasure as a possible route to demigodhood without depending on the Demoness Sect—and therefore to the freedom she wanted 139.

Abduction and Escape

Tracy invited Lorne to become a pirate. His refusal, followed by his intention to visit Edwina for academic research, convinced her that he considered Edwina superior. She secretly weakened Lorne and Lucky with disease, knocked Lorne unconscious, destroyed his camera, and redirected the ship toward the Black Death 141.

She planned to keep him aboard, claim the materials, and hide both from her mother and the sect. In her reasoning, becoming a demigod was necessary to protect their future together. She bound Lorne to a bed before leaving the cabin 142.

Unable to transport both her captive and the cargo alone, Tracy docked at a little-known private harbor and sought Misor’s help. When she returned, Lorne and Lucky were gone, the bindings had been burned through, and the materials remained untouched 143 145.

Misor contemplated killing the injured Tracy and stealing the treasure, but Katarina’s arrival stopped him. Tracy tried to keep her mother from interfering with the materials and with Brando; the sect nevertheless received the cargo, credited as Tracy’s “voluntary” contribution 145 146 150 165.

Brando’s Supposed Death

Tracy’s search included divination using Lorne’s coat, which established only that he was probably alive. She also offered a ten-thousand-pound bounty for him 151 242.

To escape her pursuit, Lorne and Danitz prepared a disguised corpse and arranged for Alger to act as an intermediary. Tracy initially received Brando’s satchel and bloodstained trousers, accused Katarina of arranging his death to make her experience affliction, and ordered an investigation because she had not yet seen a body. Her grief deepened the aura of her Demoness of Affliction potion 160 166.

After seeing the false corpse, Tracy interrogated Alger and blamed Danitz and Edwina. Her disease powers rendered Alger unconscious, and she ordered him and the body taken aboard the Black Death. Their later disappearance made her suspect that the affair had been designed to deceive her 170 177.

Her hostility toward Edwina continued. In an encounter near the Fog Sea, Tracy failed to prevent the Golden Dream from escaping, partly because Edwina’s spells were difficult to handle and Tracy’s senior crew members were absent 330.

Discovery That Brando Was Alive

Tracy preserved Lorne’s coat and handmade shotgun. When she found a sailor carrying a mass-produced Ripper, she recognized its design as almost identical to the weapon she treasured. Learning that the new model came from Backlund led her to suspect that Brando was there and to question the corpse she had seen 330 332.

She eventually learned that Brando was alive and had become a Loen viscount. Sect transport assignments, Katarina’s warnings, and Backlund’s security prevented her from immediately seeking him out. Instead, she had the movements of Edwina and Danitz tracked 363.

Klein’s recollections also establish that Tracy fought alongside him and Scott during the True Creator’s Descent Ritual, where she threw herself into Scott’s arms and cried 437.

Danitz’s Capture and Klein’s Impersonation

After her subordinates failed to capture Danitz in Bayam, Tracy decided to retrieve him personally. By this point she had secretly advanced to Sequence 4. She used nearly transparent threads to seize Danitz, blamed him for taking Brando away from her, and returned to the Black Death through mirror magic without alerting the Church of Storms 430 435 436.

She hung Danitz upside down from the mast and contacted Klein through a mirror shard. Rather than demand money, she ordered him to bring Monkey Brando, threatening Danitz if official forces were involved 437.

Klein impersonated Lorne and persuaded her to consider releasing Danitz, but Tracy insisted on a personal meeting. Although the disguise initially convinced her, she noticed the absence of her usual emotional response to Brando 447 450.

At the meeting, she could not bring herself to embrace the impostor. She then tested him with a false account of Brando refusing to take her to Backlund. His response, combined with her instinctive aversion, exposed him 451.

Tracy survived Klein’s lightning attack and revealed an incomplete mythical creature form, confirming her demigod status to him. She captured him and had him hung from the mast, sparing his life for Brando’s sake 452 453.

When Klein attempted another escape, Tracy used plague, frost, black flames, and mirrors to trap him, Danitz, and his physical body in the ammunition depot. Azik arrived with an undead army that overwhelmed her defenses and depleted her spirituality 459 460.

After learning what had happened, Lorne remained concerned for Tracy’s safety but resolved to teach her that harming his friends was unacceptable. He had still not met her again by the time of his later reflections on their relationship 466 493.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Long, slightly curled black hair and azure eyes 145 451.
  • Build and complexion: Snow-white skin, a shapely figure, and long legs; widely recognized as a beauty at sea 127 147 446.
  • Usual clothing: A white linen shirt, fitted beige trousers, tall women’s boots, and a dark red coat 330.
  • Later signature garment: Replaces her usual coat with Lorne’s ill-fitting black coat, wearing it despite its increasingly faded and worn condition 330 430 446.
  • Shipwreck injuries: Suffers a prominent burn on her back and later an abdominal wound during the island catastrophe 127 135.

Personality

Tracy is proud, commanding, and determined to remain in control. She insists internally that she should be “the one on top,” takes charge of captured ships, and gives orders that leave little room for argument 127 129 145.

Her use of feminine charm conflicts with her feelings about herself. Lorne notices that she exploits her beauty while displaying barely concealed self-disgust. Early in their voyage, she is both irritated and relieved when he resists her advances; she ordinarily regards men attracted to her with contempt 126 127 451.

Lorne’s care and generosity develop into an obsessive attachment. Tracy treats him as belonging to her, interprets his interest in Edwina as rejection, and reframes his friendships as threats to their relationship. Her jealousy extends to men, including Danitz 139 141 435 447.

She is not wholly unaware of her mistakes. She expresses regret over knocking Brando unconscious, but redirects much of the blame toward Edwina. Her longing for freedom from the sect coexists with her desire to imprison Lorne aboard her ship 142 330 451.

Abilities & Skills

Disease and Plague

Tracy inflicts illnesses that weaken, incapacitate, or disable opponents 129 147.

  • Subdues the Blood Shark’s crew, accidentally affecting Lorne within the same range 129.
  • Weakens Lorne and Lucky before her abduction; Lucky does not detect the disease in time 141.
  • Renders Alger unconscious during interrogation 170.
  • At demigod level, infects Klein’s spirit body despite its resistance to ordinary disease and poison. Spreading plague aboard her own ship also endangers her ordinary crew 459.

Black Fire, Frost, and Curses

Her established combat repertoire includes curses, black fire, and frost 147.

  • Black flames and frost can directly injure spirit bodies 459.
  • Freezes falling rain into a continuous barrage of ice spikes, making a downpour advantageous to her 459.
  • Burns through Azik’s undead attackers, but cannot keep pace with their replenishment and exhausts her spirituality 460.

Mirror Magic

Tracy uses mirrors for communication, movement, and capture 430 436 459.

  • Communicates with distant subordinates and with Klein through a mirror shard 430 437.
  • Returns from locked-down Bayam to her flagship while carrying Danitz 436.
  • Uses a mirror to intercept Klein in the ammunition depot 459.
  • Teleportation has a distance limit. Klein deliberately contacts her from the opposite end of Bayam, and she cannot escape Azik through a mirror when the distance is too great 447 460.

Threads and Restraints

Tracy controls nearly transparent threads capable of rapidly immobilizing a target 435.

  • Catches Danitz around the ankles and waist before he can escape through a window 435.
  • Wraps him in successive layers of bindings and silences him with spider silk 435 437.

Demoness Allure

Her charm can disturb an observer’s composure even when they know she is dangerous 435 446 451.

  • Uses seductive expressions to seek favors during her voyage with Lorne 125 126.
  • Continues to captivate Danitz while he is terrified of her 435 446.
  • Nearly breaks Klein’s composure despite his previous experience with Demonesses 451.
  • Does not guarantee compliance: Lorne repeatedly resists her early attempts at seduction 125 126.

Incomplete Mythical Creature Form

As a Sequence 4 demigod, Tracy can manifest an incomplete mythical creature form 452.

  • Her hair becomes thick, animated black venomous snakes 452.
  • Looking toward the form causes Klein intense pain and an instinctive spiritual warning 452.
  • Maintaining it places a substantial mental burden on a demigod 452.

Seamanship and Close Combat

Tracy’s years of piracy make her far more capable at handling a damaged ship than Lorne 142.

  • Identifies their course toward Bayam by examining the surrounding sea 139.
  • Keeps a battered vessel sailing smoothly despite its damage 142.
  • Uses precise blows to incapacitate enemies, including an elbow strike to the Blood Shark captain’s throat 129.
  • Possesses physical strength well above that of Lorne’s Sequence 7 Lucky One stage 142.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • The Black Death — Her flagship, initially kept in a private harbor near Bayam; also serves as the place where she confines captives 142 437 453.
  • Lorne’s coat — A treasured keepsake whose lingering scent comforts her. She uses it for divination and later wears it in place of her usual coat 151 330 430.
  • Handmade shotgun — The other object Brando left her. She keeps it beside her pillow, regularly oils it, and avoids firing it; familiarity with its construction lets her recognize the mass-produced Ripper 330.
  • Mass-produced Ripper — Obtained from a sailor and compared with the handmade shotgun, providing a lead to Backlund 330 332.
  • Recovered Beyonder materials — A shipload she hoped would finance independent advancement. The Demoness Sect ultimately takes them and credits the contribution to her merits 139 150 165.

Relationships

  • Lorne / Monkey Brando / James Scott — Rescuer, intimate partner, and the focus of her possessive attachment. She abducts him and later targets his friends to force a reunion; he cares about her safety but rejects her attacks on them 127 141 445 466 493.
  • Katarina — Her mother and an uneasy source of protection. Katarina prevents Misor’s attack, but Tracy distrusts her interference with Brando, the materials, and her pursuit of independence 126 145 150 430.
  • Edwina Edwards — A perceived romantic rival. Tracy resents Lorne’s admiration for her scholarship and repeatedly blames her for their separation and the false death scheme 130 141 170 332.
  • Danitz — Lorne’s friend, whom Tracy blames for taking him away. She captures, injures, and uses him as leverage to summon Brando 435 437 466.
  • Klein — Former comrade during the True Creator’s Descent Ritual, later an impostor she captures after he tries to rescue Danitz using Lorne’s appearance 437 451 453.
  • Misor — Third mate whose loyalty is suspect. He considers murdering her for the recovered materials while she is injured and distracted 145 146.
  • Kayson — Second mate who reports on the unsuccessful pursuit of Danitz; his failure prompts Tracy to act personally 430 436.
  • Blonde maid — A woman aboard the Black Death whom Tracy rejects after becoming attached to Brando, ordering her to stay away from her room and bed 149.
  • Lucky — Lorne’s cat, whom Tracy incapacitates alongside him and initially plans to keep as the ship’s cat 141 142.
  • Azik — Arrives to rescue Klein and Danitz. His undead army overwhelms Tracy, while he wonders whether she might be a descendant of someone from his fragmented memories 459 460.
