| Sequence 9 — Assassin | 13 28 47 | Already a Beyonder cat when named. Later passages explicitly identify her as an Assassin and confirm that she drank the Assassin Potion; the consumption itself is not shown in the supplied passages. |
| Assassin — possible complete control of the potion | 46 | After killing Sharon through an ambush, Lucky experiences intense excitement and pleasure. Lorne compares this with his own experience of gaining complete control over a potion, suggesting a similar breakthrough rather than a new Sequence. |
Background / History
Lucky spent years living as a stray before becoming Lorne’s pet. Those years gave her practical experience in hunting and ambushes that later proved crucial against Sharon 13 46.
While staying at a hotel in Tingen, Lorne bathed the orange cat, discovered that she was female, and named her Lucky. The name arose from a wordplay chain—“garbage,” laji, laqi, and “lucky”—and expressed his hope that she would turn his fortunes around. Its transliteration also suited Loen pet-naming conventions 13.
Appearance
- Orange fur, repeatedly reflected in her designation as the Orange Cat 13 17.
- Eyes that gleam green in dim light, notably while she opens and explores a suspected cultist’s house 41 42.
Personality
Lucky is relaxed, food-loving, and often reluctant to exert herself. She sleeps on Lorne’s bed, eagerly eats the fish and meat he provides, and droops her ears when asked to deliver a letter. Nevertheless, she carries out the task 23 24 28 29.
Her reactions are unusually expressive: she nods when named, gives Lorne exasperated looks, and protests vigorously when he blames her for trouble. She also responds to his distress, quieting down when he returns upset and rushing to his side when he collapses 13 19 27 29 34.
Her appetite can become dangerous. Sharon’s Beyonder substance provokes an intense desire to consume it, and Lucky struggles against Lorne when he prevents her from doing so 47.
Abilities & Skills
Assassin Combat and Agility
Lucky’s Assassin abilities support rapid movement, precise attacks, and concealed ambushes 28 45 46.
- Outruns Lorne around a street corner and easily avoids an approaching carriage 28.
- Leaps onto a wall and moves across nearby houses before hiding above Sharon’s encounter with Lorne 45 46.
- Swoops from the eaves, cuts Sharon’s throat with her claws, and twists in midair to strike her temple with her hind paws 46.
- Supplements her supernatural abilities with experience gained during her years as a stray 46.
Intelligence and Object Manipulation
Lucky understands and performs practical tasks despite being unable to speak 19 23 47.
- Retrieves the crystal monocle at Lorne’s request 19.
- Carries a letter downstairs to place it in the mailbox outside the inn 23.
- Opens the brass clasp of Lorne’s shoulder bag with her paw 28 41 45.
- Enters a house through a narrow window gap and opens its door lock and security chain from inside 41.
Alertness and Tracking
Lucky notices nearby activity and can follow a target without immediately drawing attention 19 41 45.
- Gives an alarmed cry shortly before Leonard confronts Lorne 19.
- Secretly follows an elderly man along a wall, leading Lorne to a house containing suspicious occult materials 41 42.
- Reacts to nearby danger as Lorne’s Robot premonition activates before Sharon appears 45.
- No specific divination or fate-manipulation ability is established for her.
Relationships
- Lorne Dysenk — Owner and closest companion. He feeds, bathes, and confides in her; her presence briefly eases his worries about fleeing and losing his notebook. He later describes her as the only living creature in this world he can talk to, while acknowledging that she cannot answer in words 20 28 30 47.
- Melissa Moretti — Lucky approaches Melissa on Iron Cross Street, prompting the encounter in which Lorne saves her from a carriage. Melissa calls Lucky adorable 28.
- Sharon — Hostile Demoness whom Lucky kills while defending Lorne. Lucky subsequently attempts to consume the Beyonder substance produced by her corpse 46 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Treasure Hunt
- Lucky’s frantic cries draw Lorne into the washroom while his ancient notebook begins turning its pages by itself. The flooded washroom keeps him occupied for nearly an hour 16 17.
- She accompanies his wilderness search, enters the hidden chamber before him, and discovers the monocle. Lorne then has her retrieve it because he remains wary of touching it himself 17 18 19.
Iron Cross Street
- Lucky’s approach to Melissa brings Lorne into the carriage-rescue incident during his search for the missing notebook 28.
- Lorne sends her with an anonymous report of a possible Beyonder incident. Dunn later tells Klein that an anonymous letter to the police helped the Nighthawks find him 29 30.
The Suspected Cultist’s House
- Lucky independently follows an elderly man and opens his house for Lorne. Inside, he discovers Hermes Script notebooks, resurrection-ritual notes, and a dark red liquid before retreating with her 41 42.
Sharon’s Death and the Altered Revolver
- Lucky’s concealed attack kills Sharon just as the wounded Demoness makes another attempt on Lorne’s life 46.
- When Lucky tries to consume Sharon’s Beyonder substance, Lorne stops her because he believes Sharon was beyond Sequence 8 and fears that skipping Sequences would cause loss of control or death 47.
- During her struggle, Lucky kicks his wrist and knocks his revolver into the substance. The gun absorbs it and develops silvery-white patterns; Lorne takes both the weapon and Lucky away from the alley 47.
- The altered revolver is later found to fire spirituality-powered bullets with black flame, frost, or Silken Binding effects, each carrying a curse 48.
