Background / History
Before his transmigration, Rowan was a World of Warcraft player who worked overtime and stayed up running Mythic Keystones. He attributes his death to overwork, then awakens in the sixteen-year-old Rowan’s body in Boralus, retaining memories of the boy’s childhood 1 2.
The original Rowan was a gifted child who placed first at the Boralus Youth Military Academy. His father, Aldrius, and Admiral Daelin were longtime comrades who sometimes discussed marrying Rowan to Jaina. At seven, Rowan promised Jaina that he would bring the most powerful fleet to Proudmoore Keep to collect her 1 16.
At eight, Rowan tried firing a broadside cannon during a ship inspection. He failed to avoid its recoil, was thrown into a cabin pillar, and suffered a head injury that impaired his intelligence for eight years. Public rumor instead claimed that he had fallen into the sea; after regaining clear speech, Rowan tells his parents what actually happened 1 3.
His initial excitement about living in Azeroth changes when he sees soldiers returning wounded from a battle with Freehold pirates. The system confirms that he cannot resurrect by returning to his corpse. He subsequently refuses his father’s demand that he attend the Military Academy, preferring engineering and eventually spellcasting to close-range combat 2 3.
Appearance
Rowan is a handsome, short-haired sixteen-year-old whose newly lively eyes attract Jenny’s attention after his recovery 2 3 5.
- Physique: Initially too weak to push through the crowd at Tradewinds Market; his early physical attributes are only ordinary adult level 2 9.
- Temporary injury: Jaina burns off his eyebrows after he teases her about marriage 21.
- Weight: By his later visit home, he has gained five pounds, despite Elena believing that he looks thinner 46.
Personality
Rowan enjoys aristocratic comforts, sleeps late, and readily shows off his success. His humor is frequently boastful or provocative: he calls himself the sea’s prospective son-in-law, flatters Gazlowe with an unearned title, and deliberately teases Jaina. Despite his interest in her, he often struggles to interpret her feelings—even when the system displays their effect on his Emotion Points 3 5 12 22 45.
His reluctance to fight begins with a realistic fear of dying, but develops into a determination to become independently capable. He favors ranged damage over melee, refuses to rely permanently on Jaina’s protection, and pursues both personal power and an industrial base. Rebuilding the Second Fleet, defeating Freehold’s pirates, and marrying Jaina become explicit goals 3 27 28 39.
He is attentive to servants and workers, inviting Jenny to eat beside him despite noble etiquette and offering mine and ironworks employees wages plus food allowances. That concern does not extend to enemies: he uses poisoned food against troggs, coercively demands decades of mining labor from Gorlick, and orders captured pirate leaders thrown into the sea 4 14 19 38 42.
Abilities & Skills
Legendary Hero Emotion Value System
The system converts legendary heroes’ emotional responses into a resource Rowan can spend on skills and attributes 2 9 43.
- Emotion collection: Gains points from surprise, happiness, pleasure, and satisfaction; disappointment and displeasure can deduct points 5 12 18 45.
- Skill purchases: Exchanges Emotion Points for engineering skill books through the System Shop 9.
- Knowledge expansion: Extends mechanical knowledge from scientific theories Rowan already understands, rather than merely supplying fixed designs 9.
- Attribute improvement: Offers Intelligence purchases as a route to spellcasting despite Rowan’s natural lack of arcane affinity 39 43.
- Limit: Provides no resurrection; Rowan has only one life 2.
Engineering and Industrial Design
Rowan combines knowledge from his former world with system-assisted engineering to develop machinery suited to Kul Tiran ships 8 9.
- Steam propulsion: Designs an engine matched to a warship’s hull and draft, then uses it to drive paddle wheels 9 29.
- Ship survivability: Adds watertight compartments to reduce flooding after hull damage 31.
- Coal-fired metallurgy: Replaces a blast furnace’s magical heating device with a coal-burning base 42.
- Mining equipment: Supplies twenty Sharphead Pickaxes to accelerate coal production 25.
- Manufacturing limits: Local smiths cannot initially shape and seal the engine cylinder adequately. Rowan solves this by employing Jaina’s fire magic for forming and welding 16 17 18.
Spellcasting
Rowan initially cannot sense surrounding magical energy. Jaina identifies his arcane affinity as zero and considers him too old to begin conventional mage training 5 39.
- System-assisted access: Intelligence investment grants low-level magical skills, bypassing the barrier that Jaina considers insurmountable 43 44.
- Forge sprites: Can summon two sprites with negligible damage, suitable for keeping as pets. The skill also provides Spirit +3 and mana regeneration speed +5% 44.
- Potential breadth: The system claims sufficient Intelligence would let him wield all six forms of Azeroth’s energy. Rowan consequently considers possibilities beyond mage magic, including warlock, priest, druid, and elemental abilities; mastery of these paths is not demonstrated 43 44.
Strategy and Command
Rowan uses technological advantages and unconventional tactics rather than personal combat strength 14 34 35.
- Trogg campaign: Exploits food shortages by mixing croton and laxatives into flour instead of attacking enemies with superior numbers and terrain 14.
- Naval maneuvering: Uses steam propulsion to turn and continue fighting after mast damage, then outruns summoned sea fog 34.
- Ramming: Orders full engine power and a head-on collision that fractures Lambert’s flagship’s hull 35.
- Delegation: Leaves direct fighting against Lambert to Leonard and Byron 35.
Commerce and Political Negotiation
Rowan treats industrial development as a problem of supplies, contracts, labor, and control over technology 22 42 49.
- Barter: Secures iron ingots through a blackstone-ore contract without paying gold 22 23.
- Supply planning: Rejects a proposed 400-ton monthly coal contract, agreeing to 200 tons so the ironworks retain sufficient fuel 45.
- Jurisdictional argument: Challenges the Third Fleet’s attempt to seize recovered cargo by emphasizing that the pirate stronghold lies on Norwington land 41.
- Technology licensing: Proposes paid usage rights under a system he calls a “patent,” rather than surrendering steam propulsion for free 49.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Steam warship: Morris Town’s first steam-powered warship; can travel without raised sails, wind runes, or Tidesage blessings 18 29.
- Carries thirty-six cannons; Leonard supplies twenty A4 Shipbreaker Cannons during its armament 31.
- Incorporates watertight compartments 31.
- Its trial voyage covers approximately seventy nautical miles on one ton of coal before exhausting the fuel supply 29.
- Retains sails, which Jaina uses with magically generated wind to return it to port 29.
- Magic Messenger Pigeon: Given to him by Jaina before his move to Morris Town 5.
- Industrial map of Tiragarde Sound: Taken from his father’s room; marks family shipyards, mines, and warehouses 4.
- Sharphead Pickaxes: System-unlocked mining tools deployed at North Mountain Mine 9 25.
- Five iron-smelting blast furnaces: Purchased with Jaina’s assistance; their transport becomes the target of a pirate ambush 20 25.
Relationships
- Jaina Proudmoore — Childhood friend, romantic interest, and essential collaborator in constructing the steam engines. Rowan wants to marry her, while she values his responsibility and care for her. Their childhood fleet promise remains central to her expectations of him 16 17 27 40.
- Aldrius — Father and financial backer. Supplies Rowan’s expedition but treats substantial funding as loans; later delegates full authority over family affairs to him 6 46 50.
- Elena — Mother. Welcomes his apparent recovery with tears and embraces, worries about his move to Morris Town, and remains openly affectionate when he returns 3 6 46.
- Jenny — Personal maid. Accompanies him, tends his injuries, and receives unusually informal treatment, including invitations to share meals and his bed 4 7 9.
- Byron — Paladin subordinate, healer, and guard. Initially recognizes Rowan’s scheming nature, but comes to admire his engineering achievements and enthusiastically supports him 7 25 29.
- Leonard — Loyal family retainer and warrior. Privately doubts Rowan’s maturity at first; later secures cannons, helps command the warship, and fights Lambert 14 31 34 35.
- Kande — Steward who manages supplies, workforce recruitment, and construction preparations. Weeps when Rowan finally gets the shipyard’s warship to sea 8 25 29 42.
- Kobi, Wrench, and Ironhammer — Blacksmiths who manufacture Rowan’s engines and assemble the ironworks’ furnace; their practical limitations prompt his collaboration with Jaina 16 18 42.
- Ellen — Lucille’s guard and a level-three Stealth User retained in Morris Town. Identifies the pirates’ powerful cannon and later warns Rowan about hidden high-ranking Stealth Users nearby 26 27 43.
- Gazlowe — Goblin trading partner. Signs ore-and-iron supply arrangements and a continuing coal contract with Rowan 22 45.
- Daelin Proudmoore — His father’s old comrade and Jaina’s father. Recognizes Rowan’s anti-pirate victory as meritorious but warns him about the political consequences of his actions 1 45.
- Lady Catherine — Jaina’s mother. Says she will consider their marriage only if Rowan becomes Commander of the First Fleet, but also welcomes him and softens Daelin’s reprimand 18 45.
- Moss Ashvane — Noble rival who mocks Rowan’s refusal to attend the Military Academy and dismisses his shipbuilding ambitions 22 23.
- Lord Ashvane and Lord Stormsong — Political opponents who press for access to steam propulsion under Kul Tiras’s technology-sharing traditions and reject Rowan’s proposed licensing terms 48 49 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Development of Morris Town
- Taking charge: Leaves Boralus with family funding, guards, blacksmiths, and supplies, then replaces Baron Delin at Morris Shipyard. Finds idle ships, unpaid workers, expensive iron, and a shortage of wind runes 6 8.
- Securing production: Uses engineering purchases to complete the engine plans and identifies the family’s nearby mine and smelting plant as resources 9.
- Removing the trogg threat: Resorts to poisoned flour after learning that previous military campaigns failed; subsequently attempts to compel Gorlick’s troggs to mine coal for at least twenty years 13 14 19.
- Proving steam power: Enlists Jaina to overcome fabrication problems, demonstrates a working prototype, and launches the first steam-powered warship 16 17 18 29.
- Opening the ironworks: Establishes coal-fired smelting and recruits labor through wages and monthly food allowances 42.
Pirate Campaign and Hidden Threats
- Convoy ambush: Leads a rescue after pirates attack ships transporting his blast furnaces. The deaths of sailors and guild personnel drive him to seek retaliation 25 26.
- Independent counterattack: Refuses Jaina’s offer to summon her father’s fleet, both to prove his independence and to avoid exposing her false Dalaran aid agreement 27.
- Naval victory: Uses superior propulsion, broadside fire, and ramming against Lambert’s fleet, although return fire damages his own vessel 34 35.
- Investigation: Stuart reveals that the Pirate Council arranged the warships, House Stormsong’s Merchants’ Guild supplied them, and an unidentified buyer hired raids around Morris Town and Cape Town. Rowan suspects the operation was intended to endanger him; that motive remains his conjecture 38 39.
- Personal vulnerability: Ellen’s discovery of Shadow Dust suggests multiple high-ranking Stealth Users have been near him. Rowan suspects protection arranged by his parents, but their identities and employer remain unconfirmed 43.
- Pursuit of magic: Turns to Intelligence purchases after recognizing that a fleet cannot protect him from every powerful professional or assassin 43 44.
Family Council and Technology Rights
- Public exposure: Brings the steam warship to Boralus once its capabilities can no longer remain secret and accepts responsibility for involving Jaina in the furnace purchase 45.
- Licensing dispute: Agrees in principle to share steam propulsion, but first secures acknowledgment of its superiority. He then proposes a monthly usage fee, initially naming 500,000 gold coins 48 49.
- Expanded responsibility: Challenges Ashvane and Stormsong’s pressure. After the council confrontation, Aldrius announces that Rowan will control the family’s affairs during his parents’ planned absence 50.
