Background / History
At five years old, Jaina rescued the Kul Tiras Fleet after a victorious campaign against Freehold’s pirates left its ships trapped in sea fog. Holding her father’s necklace, the Heart of the Kul Tiras Fleet, she sang the Kul Tiran ballad “Daughter of the Sea” and summoned the fleet home. The people adopted the song’s name as her title, honoring her for returning their missing family members 1.
Jaina and Rowan were childhood companions. Their fathers, Daelin and Lord Aldrius, were close comrades who sometimes discussed marrying the two children. When they were seven, Rowan promised to bring the most powerful fleet to Proudmoore Keep to pick her up. His subsequent cannon accident damaged his intelligence, but Jaina continued to remember that promise 1 16.
She spent years studying magic in Dalaran and became the highest-ranked student in the School of Magic’s Transmutation department. At sixteen, she returned to Kul Tiras to an enthusiastic public welcome; Rowan had not seen her for three years 1 5.
Appearance
- Build and features: Tall and slender, with delicate facial features, a high nose bridge, lively eyes, and light-gold hair 1.
- Mage attire: Wears a fitted white-and-purple mage robe during her return to Boralus 1.
- Everyday clothing: Appears in a pale-blue dress when visiting the Norwington mansion 5.
- Student clothing: Wears a blue-patterned dress and pale-blue cloak when answering Rowan’s summons to Morris Shipyard 20.
- While casting: Her eyes shine with blue magical radiance during her escape from confinement; Combustion surrounds her entire body with flames 17 36.
Personality
Jaina maintains a gentle, courteous manner in public, greeting crowds and observing noble etiquette. Around Rowan, she is much more candid: she teases him, scolds his apparent laziness, and struggles to hide her affection. She becomes jealous when he praises Lucille, while compliments directed at her restore her good mood 1 5 23.
She values ambition, responsibility, and service to Kul Tiras. Her anger over Rowan’s refusal to attend the Military Academy comes from believing he is abandoning his potential and their childhood promise. Once his steam engine works, she proudly defends his achievement to both parents. Her desire to see him become stronger coexists with intense fear whenever he faces real danger 12 16 18 30 36.
Her moral outlook is initially straightforward: she accepts harsh treatment of enemies, including Rowan’s poisoning of Troggs, but finds it difficult to believe Kul Tiran nobles could collaborate with pirates. She is also uncomfortable lying because both Daelin and Antonidas have taught her not to do so 16 20 38.
Abilities & Skills
Arcane Control and Transmutation
Jaina combines natural arcane affinity with years of study and experimentation, applying spell models to precise manufacturing work 5 17 39.
- Suspends iron plates in the air with arcane symbols 17.
- Uses a prepared spell model as a mold, then shapes heated metal with precisely controlled Arcane Blasts 17.
- Moves finished components into a water trough for cooling 17.
- Explains that magical “intellect” means receptivity to magic rather than ordinary intelligence 5.
Fire Magic
Her fire control serves both combat and industrial purposes 17 29.
- Combustion Talent: Envelops her body in intense flames, producing heat greater than the smithy’s furnace 17.
- Precision welding: Directs an even stream of fire along iron seams, fusing plates into an airtight steam-engine cylinder 17.
- Pyroblast: Ignites the coal for Rowan’s steam-powered warship’s maiden voyage 29.
- Fireball: Conjures a fireball during an argument with Rowan; he later reports that she burned off his eyebrows 21.
- Limits: Ironhammer must warn her before the heated plates melt. Producing the experimental engine consumes half her mana 17 18.
Teleportation
Jaina travels through floating arcane circles and can reach distant locations, including ships at sea 11 36.
- Answers Rowan’s magical carrier-pigeon summons by arriving at Morris Shipyard fifteen minutes later 20.
- Teleports directly aboard the Stormrain, then later onto Rowan’s warship 36 37.
- Explains that long-distance arrival-point control is difficult enough that even Antonidas might not manage it reliably 11.
Mirror Magic
Her Mirror Magic talent creates three additional Jainas with physical form through arcane magic 27 28.
- The images look indistinguishable from the original, leaving Rowan unable to identify the real Jaina during construction 28.
- All four work on the steam engine, carefully controlling fire and welding its components 28.
Wind, Water, and Observation Magic
- Wind propulsion: Generates a powerful air current to drive raised sails after the warship runs out of coal 29.
- Fog dispersal: Channels a gale through her floating staff to clear Tidesage-created sea fog 37.
- Eagle Eye: Searches the distant steam warship and identifies Rowan alive at its bow 37.
- Water control: Creates a mobile ball of water to wash coal ash from her face 28.
Technical and Commercial Assistance
- Evaluates Rowan’s steam-engine schematic and finds his explanation mechanically coherent 12.
- Secures trade contacts, investigates grain supplies, and obtains five iron-smelting blast furnaces from Ashvane Munitions 21 24.
- Cannot provide the requested twenty cannons and tells Rowan to obtain them himself 21.
- Takes the helm and steers the newly powered warship out to sea 29.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Heart of the Kul Tiras Fleet: Daelin’s necklace, which she holds while summoning the fogbound fleet home at age five 1.
- Magic Messenger Pigeon: Gives Rowan a paper pigeon so he can call for her help 5 20.
- Potions of Clarity: Brings several bottles when preparing to accelerate steam-engine construction 27.
- Small magical bag: Carries a model of Rowan’s steam warship, which she places on Daelin’s naval sand table 30.
- Crystal pendant: Clutches it while praying for Rowan’s survival during the approach to Morris Town 37.
- Ice-blue crystal staff: Materializes in her hand and serves as the focus for the gale that disperses sea fog 37.
Relationships
- Rowan — Childhood companion and romantic interest. She supports his fleet-building ambitions while insisting that he take responsibility; she eventually admits that she likes his protectiveness, reliability, and willingness to share his cake 16 27 40.
- Admiral Daelin — Father. Affectionate but protective; he grounds her over the forged aid agreement and requires Rowan to become the Second Fleet’s commander before the couple gets into further trouble 30.
- Lady Catherine — Mother. Recognizes Jaina’s feelings for Rowan and rejects the idea of marrying her away to Lordaeron, but makes marriage discussion conditional on Rowan becoming Commander of the First Fleet 18.

- To bypass the Ashvane family’s hostility toward Rowan’s family, she arranges furnace purchases under a false claim of magical aid to Dalaran 20 24 27.

“What's unfair about it? There's only one Jaina, but you can build hundreds of steam warships. How are those the same?” 29
Trivia
- Despite her status, Jaina receives only twenty gold coins a month. Spending on clothes, skincare products, and jewelry leaves her owing money to Dalaran classmates; Rowan gives her gold to repay them 20.
