Background

Ning Zhongtian rose from the Jianghu underworld. Lei Yong recognized his talent, recruited him into the Annan Army, and remained an important patron; Ning continued to retain his post as an alliance master even after reducing his involvement in the Heaven and Earth Alliance's day-to-day affairs 113 254.

He was the youngest of the Heaven and Earth Alliance's three alliance masters, its most gifted martial artist, and—after his breakthrough—its strongest. His prestige stemmed partly from his uncompromising treatment of dissidents, and discussion of consolidating the alliance under a single alliance master persisted until he personally suppressed it 114.

Establishing the Anning Guard

Ning becomes an Anning Guard garrison commander and immediately seeks to install trusted Qinghe Branch members as a banner commander and grain officer. He removes Dao Xiong from consideration and chooses candidates through strength-based contests, showing both his authority and his pragmatic view of “fairness” 114.

He develops into one of Jiang Linxian's key subordinates in Clear River, providing intelligence on Cao Wei's actions and carrying out surveillance connected to the Ghost Underworld Sect's Immortal Treasure affair 119 123.

Defending Clear River

Ning helps Jiang Linxian set a trap for Qi Cheng after the Ghost Underworld Sect infiltrator enters the Anning Guard camp. His presence and surrounding forces drive Qi Cheng toward the sword trap that kills him 145.

During the Ten Thousand Poison Ghost crisis, Ning commands troops with Feng Yu, confronts poison smoke and a Demon Tide, and reveals Dragon Gate Middle Stage strength while forcing the assassin to retreat. Jiang Linxian later kills the wounded Ten Thousand Poison Ghost and recognizes Ning's competence 181 183 184.

Brotherhood with Li Rui

Ning brings Li Rui, Huang Chui, and Fei Lao San together as sworn brothers, accepting Li Rui as their eldest brother despite Li Rui's age 210.
