Background / History
Kakashi was the son of Hatake Sakumo, the renowned White Fang of Konoha. Sakumo’s suicide left him withdrawn and distant from his classmates. Despite this isolation, Kakashi was their universally acknowledged genius, graduating early and advancing to Chunin well ahead of his peers 11 12 25.
After his father’s death, Konoha’s leadership monitored Kakashi for over a year. Hiruzen feared that the talented child might become a rogue ninja or an enemy of the village. This surveillance had only recently eased when the battle with Hozuki Mangetsu drew renewed attention to him 22.
Appearance
- White hair and a face mask distinguish him when Mu Feng and Kurenai encounter him on the street 12.
- A short sword strapped to his back forms part of his usual mission equipment 12.
- Bandages and a limping gait mark his recovery from Mangetsu’s attack; by his next meeting with Mu Feng at the exams, the bandages have been removed and his injuries are almost healed 25 36.
- An animal mask conceals his face during the covert operation, though Mu Feng recognizes him immediately by his white hair 41.
Personality
Kakashi initially treats others with cold detachment, walking past former classmates without acknowledging them. His father’s fate also makes him uncomfortable with the idea of “comrades.” Being saved by Mu Feng prompts him to reconsider that attitude, particularly after Mu Feng insists that comrades should protect one another 12 25.
His confidence in his talent is shaken when Mu Feng defeats an opponent who nearly killed him. Rather than remaining defeated, Kakashi resolves to surpass Mu Feng and begins investigating Chidori. He can openly admit that Mu Feng is stronger and later asks him for technical guidance, showing that his competitiveness does not prevent him from learning from a rival 21 25 38.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
- Fights Mangetsu with the White Fang Short Sword, exchanging airborne strikes and blade clashes 17.
- Cannot withstand Mangetsu’s superior strength; one clash sends him crashing to the ground 17.
Combat Judgment and Reconnaissance
- Notices a squad of foreign ninja outside Konoha and approaches to investigate, but is discovered 17.
- Uses the forest terrain while retreating toward Konoha, hoping to attract Jonin or ANBU assistance 17.
- Warns Mu Feng to flee after recognizing that their opponent is a Jonin 17.
- Receives an outside-the-village investigation assignment because he was the first to encounter the Kirigakure infiltrators 37.
Lightning Chakra and Chidori Research
- Is already studying chakra nature transformation when he witnesses Mu Feng’s Chidori 21 38.
- Initially declines Mu Feng’s offer to teach him, believing he can reproduce the technique after seeing it 25.
- Later identifies a practical obstacle: uncontrolled lightning chakra can injure the user while gathering on the hand 38.
- Watches repeated demonstrations and gains insight from Mu Feng’s advice to increase his chakra reserves and improve control 38.
- Documented limit: He is still developing Chidori; the supplied passages do not show him successfully using it 37 38.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White Fang Short Sword — Kakashi’s close-combat weapon. Mu Feng takes it to pursue Mangetsu, then leaves it behind after the killing blow; Kakashi retrieves it 18 21.
- Flying Thunder God-marked dagger — Given to him by Minato so that Minato can provide support during the secret mission. Possession of the dagger does not establish that Kakashi can use Flying Thunder God himself 37.
- ANBU-style animal mask — Worn during the covert operation against enemy infiltrators 41.
Relationships
- Hatake Sakumo / White Fang — Father. His death shapes Kakashi’s isolation and conflicted feelings about comrades 17 25.
- Mu Feng Uchiha — Former classmate, rescuer, rival, and source of Chidori guidance. Their initially distant relationship develops into an unspoken understanding after the Mangetsu battle 25 38.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Hokage and superior. Monitors Kakashi, questions him about Mangetsu’s death, and assigns him work connected to exam security 22 23 36 37.
- Minato Namikaze — Jonin assigned to assist Kakashi and Mu Feng on their mission. Gives Kakashi his investigation assignment and a marked dagger; he is not yet established as Kakashi’s teacher 37.
- Might Guy — Former classmate who enthusiastically approaches him despite Kakashi’s reserved manner 25.
- Hozuki Mangetsu — Enemy infiltrator who nearly kills him. Kakashi subsequently witnesses Mu Feng kill Mangetsu with Chidori 17 21.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mangetsu Encounter and Rescue
- During a nighttime walk outside Konoha, Kakashi discovers foreign ninja and is pursued by Mangetsu after attempting to investigate 17.
- Mu Feng interrupts Mangetsu’s finishing attack with shuriken and holds him off long enough for Kakashi to recover 17 18.
- After Mangetsu retreats, Mu Feng takes Kakashi’s sword and pursues him. Kakashi follows and witnesses the final counterattack 18 21.
- ANBU retrieve Kakashi from the battlefield. He falls unconscious after returning to Konoha and awakens in the hospital 22 23.
- His testimony identifies Mu Feng as Mangetsu’s killer, prompting Hiruzen and Danzo to investigate Mu Feng’s previously unrecognized strength 23.
Rivalry and Exam-Security Mission
- Visits Mu Feng to thank him and ask about Chidori, then declares his intention to surpass him. He also reassures their former classmates that Mu Feng is stronger than he is 25.
- Fetches Mu Feng from the Chunin Exam arena for a temporary mission ordered by Hiruzen 36.
- Meets Minato, receives an investigation assignment, and obtains further Chidori guidance from Mu Feng before the operation 37 38.
- Returns with his own masked squad and exchanges mission reports with the other teams. He and Mu Feng recognize one another but do not speak during the debriefing 41.
- Later directs Minato to Mu Feng’s home, where Minato delivers the promised Flying Thunder God training scroll 42.
Notable Quotes
“Mu Feng, you're strong, but next time, I'll surpass you!” 25
“That guy... he's stronger than me!” 25
Trivia
- Mu Feng’s system uses “a Kakashi” as a unit of chakra measurement. Mu Feng believes the benchmark is the elite Jonin Kakashi from the original story, rather than the child Chunin he meets in the novel 3 12.
- The Chidori exchange reverses Mu Feng’s knowledge of the original story: he draws inspiration from Kakashi’s future technique, while the younger Kakashi studies Mu Feng’s version to develop his own 25 38.
