Appearance

  • Features: Black hair, slender brows, bright eyes, white teeth, and a slender waist; repeatedly described as exceptionally beautiful 24 68 88.
  • Usual clothing: White robes or dresses, contributing to her aloof, immortal-like appearance 76 89.
  • Veil: Wears a veil aboard the Heavenly Moon Divine Ship at the border gathering 105.
  • Disguises: Assumes an ordinary woman’s appearance while operating Lin-Nan Pavilion. Later wears red clothing and an ordinary-looking disguise during the Void Sky Hall expedition 167 172.

Personality

Nangong Wan is proud, ambitious, and deeply committed to immortality. Before becoming involved with Lin He, she rarely leaves her sect and has little interest in romance or worldly affairs. Her preferred cultivation method is prolonged seclusion rather than competing for opportunities outside; she explicitly dislikes fighting and is described as not particularly skilled at it 46 121 129 163.

Her public reserve contrasts with her affectionate, teasing behavior around Lin He. She maintains a cold, formal manner before other cultivators while privately joking about their supposed senior–junior relationship. She sometimes shows jealousy toward the women around him, but also recognizes Xin Ruoyin’s feelings without confronting her 57 68 76 89.

She is generous toward her disciples and protective of their prospects. She accepts Xiao Mei so that she will not be separated from Xin Ruoyin, gives both women top-tier magical artifacts, and reassures Yan Ruyan that sustained cultivation will allow her to restore her family’s standing 46 116.

Background / History

Forbidden Land Trial

Nangong Wan leads Covering Moon Sect disciples into an underground marsh containing a golden chest. Expecting a powerful Black-Scaled Python, she instead encounters an Ink Flood Dragon. She restrains it with the Vermilion Bird Ring, but it sheds its skin, advances to the second tier, and escapes. She covers her disciples’ retreat before the Small Five-Elements Sumeru Formation seals the passage and traps her inside 22 23.

Lin He emerges from hiding and helps her fight the dragon. Their combined efforts allow him to kill it with the Golden Light Brick talisman treasure. Nangong Wan takes the dragon’s soul and golden chest, leaving its materials and the nearby spirit medicines to Lin He. A red sphere recovered from the corpse then bursts into pink mist around them 23.

The following chapter reveals that they have had intercourse. Nangong Wan initially feels hurt and resentful, particularly because of the disparity between their cultivation levels. Nevertheless, she cannot bring herself to kill Lin He. They agree to conceal what happened and cooperate to break out of the formation 24.

Reunion and the Chaotic Star Sea

When Lin He later visits the Covering Moon Sect, Nangong Wan publicly refuses to meet him but secretly arranges a meeting through a Sound Transmission Talisman. At his request, she tests Xin Ruoyin’s formation knowledge, accepts her as a disciple, and takes Xiao Mei as a nominal disciple. She also agrees to suppress Xin Ruoyin’s dangerous constitution 46.

Lin He gives her a Youth-Preserving Pill and asks her to arrange the handling of Level Five demon beast materials. As their relationship develops, his rapid cultivation progress eases her earlier dissatisfaction with their unequal standing 47 49.

Nangong Wan subsequently helps secure the Ancient Teleportation Array, killing the Blood Jade Spider guarding the cavern. She travels with Lin He and Xin Ruoyin to the Chaotic Star Sea, where they head toward Kui Star City to prepare for further exploration 51 52.

Five-Year Separation and the Demonic Path War

Before leaving with Xin Ruoyin to search for Green Spirit Island, Nangong Wan identifies the tracking danger hidden in the Golden Rain Sword. Lin He gives her a simplified Five Elements Reversal Formation for protection, and they agree to reunite after five years 57.

After their reunion, she helps plan measures to slow the Six Demonic Path Sects’ invasion, including action against wavering clans and sects. Once Lin He’s external incarnation, Lan Chou, forms his core, Nangong Wan regards Lin He as her equal in combat strength and sincerely addresses him as her husband 63 65.

At Yan Family Castle, she fights Elder Lin and later faces Wang Tiangu’s treasure-defiling yin fiend qi. Lan Chou’s intervention helps her recover the Vermilion Bird Ring. Yan Ruyan subsequently becomes her disciple, strengthening the Yan Family’s ties to the Covering Moon Sect 71 73 77.

Golden Drum Plains and Departure from the Heavenly South

Assigned by her sect to provide support, Nangong Wan visits Li Huayuan and Hongfu’s position. Her public thanks to Lin He for protecting her magic treasure provides a pretext for a private meeting. She brings him materials and jade slips, including the methods for Corpse Puppets, the Corpse Fiend Grand Array, and Soul-Burning Pearls 76 77.

On the Golden Drum Plains, she conceals herself while Lin He draws out enemies. Their coordinated use of Soul-Burning Pearls, puppets, and other attacks helps turn a large battle in their allies’ favor 93 95.

During the later retreat from the Heavenly South, she rescues Lin He and his companions with her Corpse Puppets. She openly identifies him as her husband when Hongfu attempts to take him away for Dong Xuan’er. Against Wang Tiangu, she deploys eighteen Corpse Puppets as a single Nascent Soul-level combatant, holding him off until Wen Min intervenes 116 119 120 121.

Nangong Wan refuses Wen Min’s order to return to the Covering Moon Sect, choosing to remain beside Lin He. Wen Min ultimately accepts her decision, warns her about internal sect opposition, and escorts the group part of the way 121.

Green Spirit Island

Nangong Wan settles with Lin He and their companions on Green Spirit Island. He provides her with the Great Evolution Art and Puppet Technique to strengthen her spiritual sense and help supply the island with defenders and workers 125.

After advancing to late Core Formation, she gives Lin He the eighteen Corpse Puppets for his travels, explaining that he faces more danger than she does. She also asks him to gather materials for Yan Ruyan’s life-bound magic treasure. Later, she spends more than a year helping him refine his set of 256 Golden Spirit Celestial Star Needles 129 144.

Tianxing City and Nascent Soul Formation

Nangong Wan and Lin He establish Lin-Nan Pavilion in a mortal district of Tianxing City, living under ordinary-looking disguises for more than twenty years. Their shop serves as the setting for her market-entry cultivation while she works toward Nascent Soul Formation 167.

After closing the shop, she travels to South Crane Island and successfully forms her Nascent Soul under Qing Yi’s protection. Despite reaching the same broad realm as her protector, she continues to address him respectfully as a senior and thanks him before stabilizing her cultivation 167.

Void Sky Hall

Nangong Wan appears at Void Sky Hall disguised as an ordinary-looking woman in red. She later reunites with Lin He and Qing Yi, warns Lin He about the danger of their plan to seize the cauldron, and joins their search for Longevity Fruits 172 176.

Abilities & Skills

Fire-Attribute Cultivation

  • Possesses a fire-attribute heavenly spiritual root. She shows no interest in the Heaven Mending Pills’ apparent spiritual-root improvement because her aptitude is already at its peak 52.
  • Uses the Vermilion Bird Ring to generate large numbers of fireballs and release concentrated crimson flames 22 52.
  • Kills the Level Four Blood Jade Spider with a single serious flame attack 52.

Corpse Puppet Control and the Corpse Fiend Grand Array

  • Commands eighteen Corpse Puppets that combine into a giant puppet with early Nascent Soul strength 119 120.
  • Uses the combined puppet to crush Wang Tiangu’s Ghost Hand and withstand his claw-shaped ancient treasure 120.
  • Limitation: Controlling the combined puppet as a Middle Core Formation cultivator rapidly exhausts her spiritual sense. Prolonged combat leaves her pale and struggling to maintain control 120 121.
  • Later entrusts the eighteen puppets to Lin He for protection during his travels 129.

Great Evolution Art

  • Completes the first three layers over more than twenty years, greatly strengthening her spiritual sense 128.
  • Completes the fourth layer before attempting Nascent Soul Formation, aided by Heart-Guarding Pills 167.

Concealment and Disguise

  • Nameless Qi-Concealing Technique: Conceals her aura well enough that late Core Formation cultivators would need a careful examination to detect her 68.
  • Flowing Cloud Banner: Combines its divine-sense-blocking mist with aura concealment to hide among clouds; even Lin He cannot locate her with his spiritual sense 93.
  • Form-Transformation Art: Uses the Profound Yin Scripture’s technique to assume an ordinary appearance. She initially remarks that even she cannot see through the transformation 167.
  • Privacy measures: Casts soundproofing barriers and deploys a formation capable of blocking Core Formation cultivators’ probing 47 76.

Constitution Suppression and Artifact Refinement

  • Uses cold yin magical power to suppress Xin Ruoyin’s dragon chant body. At Middle Core Formation, she states that she can manage it before Xin Ruoyin reaches Foundation Establishment 46.
  • Helps refine and test Lin He’s Golden Spirit Celestial Star Needles, including testing their durability against spells and a magic treasure 144.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Vermilion Bird Ring — Her life-bound magic treasure. Changes size to restrain opponents and produces fire attacks. It is threatened by Wang Tiangu’s yin fiend qi and later caught by his Ghost Hand; its destruction would grievously injure her 23 52 73 119.
  • Fiery-red flying sword — A magic treasure used to transport Lin He and their companions at high speed 51 52.
  • Red Jade Tablet — A fine fire-attribute ancient treasure obtained from the battle at Spirit Beast Mountain. Its runes temporarily hold up the late Core Formation cultivator Meng Liang 116 117.
  • Simplified Five Elements Reversal Formation — Given to her by Lin He before her five-year search for Green Spirit Island 57.
  • Flowing Cloud Banner — Temporarily provided by Lin He for their Golden Drum Plains ambush strategy 93.
  • Youth-Preserving Pill — A gift from Lin He during their reunion 47.
  • Level Seven Lava Giant Turtle — Given to her by Lin He after his return to Green Spirit Island 128.

Relationships

  • Lin He — Husband and Dao companion. Their initially troubled connection develops into mutual affection and a shared pursuit of higher cultivation. She repeatedly risks her safety for him and refuses to abandon him when Wen Min asks her to return to the sect 24 49 65 119 121.
  • Xin Ruoyin — Disciple. Nangong Wan recognizes her formation talent, suppresses her dragon chant body, and travels with her during the five-year search for Green Spirit Island 46 57.
  • Xiao Mei — Nominal disciple, accepted so that she can remain with Xin Ruoyin 46.
  • Yan Ruyan — Disciple accepted after the Yan Family Castle conflict. Nangong Wan supports her cultivation and her ambition to restore the Yan Family; Yan Ruyan chooses to follow her rather than return to the Covering Moon Sect 77 116 121.
  • Wen Min — Covering Moon Sect grand elder and protective senior who treats Nangong Wan as her own disciple. Although disapproving of her relationship with Lin He, Wen Min helps her survive Wang Tiangu’s pursuit and accepts her decision to leave 77 121.
  • Fairy Nishang — Close sect associate and battlefield ally. Nishang greets her with conspicuous concern after the Forbidden Land Trial, and they later fight together against Wang Tiangu and Demonic Path cultivators 24 73 95.
  • Layman Qing Yi — Protects her Nascent Soul Formation at Lin He’s request. She remains deferential toward him after her breakthrough 164 167.
  • Dong Xuan’er — Rival over Lin He. Nangong Wan opposes her attempt to take him away and accuses her of acting out of possessiveness 118 119.
  • Wang Tiangu — Enemy whose attacks repeatedly threaten her life-bound treasure. Her combined Corpse Puppet eventually allows her to resist him directly 73 119 120.

Trivia

  • Green Spirit Island’s forms of address do not follow a consistent hierarchy: Xin Ruoyin and Yan Ruyan call Nangong Wan “Master,” while Zi Ling calls her “Sister Nangong.” Yan Ruyan nevertheless continues calling Nangong Wan’s husband “Senior Brother Lin” 171.
