While still an unaffiliated cultivator, Xin Ruoyin accidentally discovered Ancient Cultivator Ruins and inherited the legacy of an ancient formation specialist. The inheritance included an ancient formations tome and the Mystic Womb Nascent Soul Transformation Art, which she kept for years before giving them to Lin He 171.

She financed her research by setting up formations for cultivation clans, using the earnings to purchase formation flags, array disks, and manuals. Several clans wanted to confine her as their permanent formation master; she refused to surrender her freedom. Years of such pressure led her to maintain three refuges and move between them regularly 31 32 35.

Rescue and relocation

After meeting Lin He at a spirit-tea shop, Xin Ruoyin and Xiao Mei left the market but were pursued by Liu Ming’s group. Her temporary formations delayed them until Xu Yan, a Foundation Establishment cultivator, intervened. When he injured and threatened Xiao Mei, Xin Ruoyin agreed to accompany him to spare her maid 31 32.

Lin He rescued both women, but Xin Ruoyin initially questioned his intentions. After a subsequent illness nearly killed her, he supplied millennium spirit medicine and explained that he wanted to invest in her future as a formation master rather than demand immediate repayment. She accepted his proposal to seek treatment and sect backing in the Yue Kingdom 35 36 37.

The women fled the Yuanwu Kingdom with Lin He and helped deploy the Five Elements Reversal Formation against their pursuers. At Yellow Maple Valley Market, Xin Ruoyin opened a formation shop under his protection. She described the following year as one of the few peaceful periods of her life 39 45 46.

Nangong Wan’s disciple

Lin He introduced Xin Ruoyin to Nangong Wan, who tested her formation knowledge and accepted her as a disciple. Nangong Wan also offered to suppress her Dragon Chant Body until she reached Foundation Establishment 46.

Xin Ruoyin later repaired and concealed an Ancient Teleportation Array, enabling the group to reach the Chaotic Star Sea. She left with Nangong Wan to search for Green Spirit Island; during their travels, the cold yin power of an Egret Fish Monster’s demon core eased her illness 52 57 63.

Heavenly One Pavilion

After settling on Green Spirit Island, Xin Ruoyin reached Foundation Establishment and completed three formations capable of holding off Core Formation cultivators. She also studied the Great Evolution Art and helped assume control of the island’s puppets, allowing Lin He to enter seclusion 125 126.

As her cultivation approached Core Formation, Lin He asked her to investigate a formation that could unite eighteen Heavenly Capital Demon Corpses. She judged that the project required at least early Core Formation cultivation. Her own core formation is later documented alongside Senior Sister Chen’s 144 163.

Ancient formations and Void Sky Hall

At a remote island, Xin Ruoyin spent several months carefully dismantling sophisticated formations rather than destroying them outright. The work improved her expertise and revealed a Spirit-Sealing Pillar. She then helped Nangong Wan hold off an animated skeleton while Lin He fought the ghost beneath it 165 166.

Before Void Sky Hall opened, she entrusted Lin He with the ancient formations tome and Mystic Womb Nascent Soul Transformation Art from her inheritance. She entered the hall with Lin He and Zi Ling, survived the first trial with her spirit beast and puppets, and accompanied them during the capture of the Nine-Curve Spirit Ginseng 170 171 172 175 176.

Xin Ruoyin values freedom more than the security offered by powerful clans. Her caution extends to benefactors: even after Lin He rescues her, she asks why he appeared and worries that gratitude might become a means of coercion 31 35 37.

Her loyalty is practical rather than passive. During Lin He’s battle with Xu Yan, she refuses to abandon him and instead attempts to activate her residence’s defensive array to relieve the pressure on him. She is similarly protective of Xiao Mei, accepting Xu Yan’s demand only after he threatens the injured maid 32 33.

She is diligent, considerate, and eager to improve her craft. On Green Spirit Island, she researches defenses day and night after learning that Lin He finds them inadequate.
