Power Progression
Mewtwo’s development includes physical maturation, psychic awakening, Trainer proficiency, and a ranked-game milestone rather than a single numerical power scale.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Early psychic awakening | 210 | After roughly a month in the Culture Vessel, develops rudimentary combat capabilities and self-awareness. Its faint telepathy is detectable by Mew but not by humans. |
| Accelerated growth phase | 233 | Reaches approximately the size of a ten-year-old human after half a month of growth. Begins learning Confusion and masters human language despite Growth Inhibitor treatment. |
| Independent physical survival | 270 | Becomes capable of surviving outside the culture fluid. Shatters its vessel with Confusion and levitates, but its lack of combat awareness allows Mega Beedrill to defeat it immediately. |
| Battle-driven growth | 285 | Repeated battles against Viridian Gym challengers rapidly improve its strength. Researchers warn that its accumulating psychic power may overcome the Suppressor Armor. |
| Restored conscious control | 293 | Mew reconnects their minds and frees Mewtwo from the restraint system’s mental suppression, restoring its connection to its body. |
| Great Ball rank | 300 | Climbs from a fresh account to Great Ball rank in Pokémon Champions after four days of practical battles and simulations. This measures its game-based Trainer progress, not personal combat strength. |
| Psychic enhancement studies | 308 | Studies Sabrina’s methods of strengthening Pokémon and forcing temporary evolution with psychic energy, adopting them as a possible route toward its own evolution. |
| Applied psychic evolution | 324 | Uses psychic power to evolve Tangela into Tangrowth and commands it in a Sunny Day team built around disruption and defensive stalling. |
| Awakening progress: 30% | 336 | Qingyu’s Travel Raising system displays the training goal “Awaken!” at 30%. Mewtwo has also fully adapted to its role as a Trainer. |
| Incomplete evolutionary manifestation | 342 | Briefly emits an Evolutionary Glow after Qingyu reassures it. The glow fades because its accumulated power is not yet sufficient for independent Mega Evolution. |
| Refined Psystrike | 348 | Learns to concentrate psychic force into a focused shape, increasing its range and one-on-one destructive power compared with its earlier scattered blasts. |
| Mega Mewtwo Y | 366 369 | Achieves Mega Evolution during the battle against Lucian. The transformation requires neither a carried Mega Stone nor an activated Key Stone. |
Background / History
Creation and confinement
Team Rocket created Mewtwo using genetic material extracted from a fossilized Mew eyelash, combined with Giovanni’s genes. Giovanni later stated that the project required nearly ten years of research, simulations, and refinement by leading scientists 160 372.
Mewtwo initially lived entirely within a Culture Vessel beneath Viridian Gym. Its immature body depended on nutrient solution and life-support equipment. When it developed self-awareness, Giovanni ordered the drug concentration doubled to suppress its thinking while allowing physical growth 210 233.
Mew became its first friend, visiting almost daily and communicating through psychic power. Those visits introduced Mewtwo to the idea of an outside world and gave it someone who treated it as an equal. Mew promised to take it away once its body could survive without the vessel 233 293.
Giovanni’s control
Mewtwo initially wondered whether the human who named it was its father. After learning Giovanni’s name and hearing itself described as a “tool,” it rejected that interpretation, regarding him only as its creator 210 233.
When Giovanni revealed that he knew about Mew’s visits, Mewtwo broke its vessel to protect its friend. Giovanni’s Mega Beedrill ambushed it before it could react, and researchers fitted it with Suppressor Armor. The armor restricted its thoughts to mechanical responses to commands, but did not stop its psychic power from growing 270 285.
Giovanni then used Viridian Gym challengers to accelerate Mewtwo’s development. Even under suppression, Mewtwo instinctively resisted hurting Mew, showing that their friendship had survived the loss of conscious control 285 286.
Rescue and a new home
During the confrontation at Viridian Gym, Mew used Zen Headbutt to restore their mental connection and release Mewtwo from suppression. After Giovanni’s defeat, he declared that he was entrusting Mewtwo to Qingyu. Qingyu rejected the premise that Mewtwo’s future was Giovanni’s to decide, insisting that it was an independent life rather than a weapon 293 294.
Mewtwo subsequently guided Qingyu and Lance through the laboratory to locate the surviving Clone Pokémon. Qingyu supplied Poké Balls so Mewtwo could guide those companions instead of taking them for himself. Lance approved placing Mewtwo with Qingyu, and Mewtwo traveled to Paldea hoping Sunshine Gym could become a home for the clones 295 298 311.
Appearance
- Early body: Pink and recognizably similar to Mew, but with more human-like anatomy 210.
- Rapid growth: Becomes two or three times Mew’s size; researchers compare its growth-phase size to that of a ten-year-old human 233.
- Height after rescue: Nearly a head shorter than Qingyu 294.
- Psychic activity: Its eyes display a pale blue glow when concentrating psychic energy 351 361.
- Mega Mewtwo Y: Smaller and more slender than its normal form, with white-and-purple skin, red eyes, and a curved, tail-like appendage extending from the back of its head 366.
Personality
Mewtwo is reserved, polite, and intensely studious. Rather than retaliating against every human after its rescue, it reassesses Qingyu when he challenges Giovanni’s treatment of it, then offers its hand and thanks him. Qingyu later describes it as a sensible, well-behaved child; the system lists its nature as “very modest” 294 329 336.
Its early confinement leaves it distrustful of humans and uncertain about its own worth. Having seen Team Rocket value Pokémon mainly for their usefulness, it comes to believe that strength is necessary to earn recognition and avoid abandonment. When Qingyu does not send it into battle, it fears that he considers it too weak 270 342.
Mewtwo’s ambition combines concern for the clones with a desire to support Qingyu. It studies battle footage frame by frame, keeps detailed notes, and treats every challenger as a source of practical experience. This diligence can become excessive: Qingyu imposes bedtime and internet limits, but Mewtwo later rationalizes studying beneath the covers as more important than sleeping 306 307 309 348.
Its battling style gradually becomes more mischievous. Starting as a straightforward novice, it adopts stalling, status moves, and disruptive combinations from Qingyu and its opponents. After awakening, it also shows occasional theatrical confidence, willingly accepting Drapion’s attack while continuing its own assault 324 338 367.
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Power
Mewtwo inherits powerful psychic abilities from Mew and expands their applications through instruction from Mew and Sabrina 336.
- Telepathy: Communicates directly with humans and Pokémon; shares a compatible psychic wavelength with Mew 233.
- Perception: Detects nearby beings and uses psychic senses to locate opponents, including Gengar hiding within shadows 298 369.
- Telekinesis: Shatters its Culture Vessel, levitates, and restrains opponents. As Mega Mewtwo Y, it stops Mega Metagross and its Substitute simultaneously 270 366.
- Training assistance: Applies pressure, reverses gravity, and creates Trick Room while training the clones 309.
- Evolution assistance: Uses psychic power to evolve Tangela into Tangrowth 324.
- Recovery through meditation: Uses Calm Mind to restore mental energy and devote more time to study 336.
- Camouflage participation: Helps with Mew’s shared invisibility technique during the plush-catching operation 351.
Psystrike
Mewtwo’s signature attack compresses psychic force into an almost tangible projectile. Although a special attack, its impact tests the opponent’s physical defenses 348.
- Focused attack: Shapes energy into a blade or concentrated point for greater single-target damage 348 361.
- Wide destruction: Its earlier, less focused version scatters force across a larger area 348.
- Psychic targeting: Tracks Mega Gengar’s location despite its concealment in shadows 369.
- Limit: Repeated use consumes considerable stamina; its destructive force requires practice away from the Gym 348.
Terrain and Battlefield Control
- Psychic Terrain: Spreads psychic energy across the ground to strengthen Psychic-type attacks and interfere with certain priority moves 355.
- Expanding Force: Resonates with Psychic Terrain to cover the field, defeating Clefable’s Minimize-and-Substitute concealment strategy 355 356.
- Teleport: Repositions rapidly to evade successive Shadow Balls rather than functioning only as a retreat move 355.
- Future Sight: Launches a delayed psychic attack that disappears from the immediate battlefield 356.
- Trick Room: Uses the move freely as part of its developed psychic repertoire 309 348.
Mega Evolution
Mewtwo achieves Mega Mewtwo Y through its own power. Qingyu’s Key Stone does not activate, and Mewtwo carries no corresponding Mega Stone 366 369.
- Greatly increases its psychic strength; its normal form can contend with Mega Metagross, while its Mega form overwhelms it 366 367.
- Redirects Fire Blast around a Substitute to strike the real Metagross from behind 367.
- Can voluntarily release its Mega form after battle 367.
- Chooses psychic power as its preferred direction of growth. Mega Mewtwo X is discussed as an alternative possibility, but no transformation into that form is documented here 329 372.
Trainer Skills
Mewtwo learns Pokémon care from the Breeding Notes Qingyu provides and tactics through videos, Pokémon Champions, and live Gym battles 300.
- Builds teams around the clones’ species and studies weather-based strategies 300 321.
- Reviews opponents’ intentions, switching patterns, and team structures instead of relying solely on raw power 300 306 348.
- Uses combinations such as Ninetales’s Will-O-Wisp and Encore followed by Tangrowth’s Sleep Powder 338.
- Trains Baby Pokémon and teaches female Indeedee psychic techniques 336.
- Serves as Sunshine Gym’s Trainer opponent for newcomers without Badges 380.
Other Moves and Durability
- Additional documented moves: Disable, Psychic, Power Swap, Recover, Confuse Ray, Psych Up, Thunder Wave, Imprison, Taunt, Will-O-Wisp, Fire Blast, and Earth Power 336 348 366 367.
- Durability: Takes Clefable’s Shadow Ball with only minor scrapes and survives an exchange with Mega Gengar’s Shadow Ball 356 369.
- Status vulnerability: Becomes poisoned after accepting Drapion’s attack during the semifinal 367.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Culture Vessel — former life support: Supplied oxygenated nutrient solution until its body could survive independently 210 233.
- Growth Inhibitor — former treatment: Used to restrain development; Giovanni discontinued it after it failed to suppress Mewtwo’s growing intelligence 233.
- Suppressor Armor — former restraint: Suppressed independent thought and forced basic obedience while leaving psychic growth unrestricted 270 285.
- Clone Pokémon’s Poké Balls: Supplied by Qingyu so Mewtwo could guide its rescued companions 295.
- Breeding Notes: A Kanto-focused care reference covering basic through advanced Pokémon raising 300.
- Study tools: Uses notebooks, phones, computers, and the Pokédex; plays Pokémon Champions on an alternate account created by Qingyu 300 306.
- Mega Stone: Does not carry one when Mega Evolving 369.
Relationships
- Mew — Genetic source, first friend, and rescuer. Its visits awaken Mewtwo’s interest in life beyond the laboratory. Mew jokes about being its mother but generally treats it as a friend 233 293 307.
- Qingyu / Teacher Yu — Caretaker, teacher, and battle partner. Mewtwo increasingly trusts him, while he emphasizes its right to choose its own path. Both compare their bond to a father-and-child relationship 294 307 329 342.
- Giovanni — Creator and source of its human genes. Mewtwo rejects him as a father after recognizing his intention to use it as a tool 233 270 372.
- Clone Pokémon — Companions it wants to protect and raise: the rescued Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Vulpix, Abra, and Tangela 295 300.
- Sabrina — Indirect psychic instructor through a training video; later an opponent whose Mega Gengar Mewtwo defeats 308 369.
- Lucario — Training companion and fellow Mega Evolution researcher 309 329.
- Female Indeedee — Psychic student and prospective tournament teammate; Mewtwo studies how their powers can coordinate 336.
- Lance — League investigator who authorizes its placement with Qingyu after observing their compatibility 311.
- Nemona — Befriends Mewtwo during a visit to Sunshine Gym and agrees to postpone battling until her Pokémon have rested 385.

- Initially loses a Gym trial to a rookie Trainer, then seeks more challengers to build experience 309.
- Develops from an inexperienced commander into an apprentice capable of defeating challengers with disruptive tactics 324 336 338.
- Accepts Qingyu’s reassurance that it need not prove its worth solely through strength, shortly before its first Evolutionary Glow appears 342.
- Later takes responsibility for training the clones and battling Badge-less newcomers, while Qingyu handles more experienced challengers 380.
- Continues defeating Gym challengers during preparations for Raihan’s visit and confronts Marshadow when it enters the Gym at night 385 391.
Psychic Power Masters Tournament
Qingyu enters Mewtwo to provide opponents strong enough to develop its personal combat abilities, rather than only its Trainer skills 329.
| Opponent | Mewtwo’s contribution | Outcome |
|---|---|---|

| Caitlin | Concentrates Psystrike into a psychic blade that overwhelms Gothitelle’s Psychic 361. | Defeats Gothitelle and secures Qingyu’s victory 361. |
| Lucian | Awakens Mega Mewtwo Y, defeats Mega Metagross with redirected Fire Blast, uses Earth Power against Drapion, and finishes against Girafarig 366 367. | Secures Qingyu’s place in the final; finishes poisoned and voluntarily releases its Mega form 367. |
| Sabrina | Counters Mega Gengar’s trapping and disruption, interrupts Perish Song with Taunt, and survives their final exchange 369. | Defeats Mega Gengar, giving Qingyu a 2–0 lead before being recalled 369. |
Notable Quotes
“More than actual battle experience, what I lack now is an understanding of the various basic strategies. Only by knowing what my opponent is thinking can I make sound judgments.” 300
“But if I beat you, that should solve everything.” 369
Trivia
- Qingyu’s system records Friendship: 200, a meeting in Cabo Poco on March 1, and a dislike of spicy food 336.
- Despite being listed as genderless, Mewtwo receives both masculine and feminine pronouns in the supplied narration; Qingyu explicitly compares it to a daughter 309 329 336.
- Qingyu’s special Pokédex has no entry for Mewtwo, and tournament spectators likewise cannot identify it through their Pokédexes 298 355.
- The Travel Raising system recognizes Mewtwo as associated with Qingyu even though he states that he has not formally caught it 336 342.
- Giovanni’s expectation that Mewtwo would favor human-style physical combat came from research indicating that his genes were dominant in the embryo. Its eventual psychic-focused Mega form exceeded his expectations 372.
