Background / History
Guardian of the Ancient Kingdom
Regirock became an ancient kingdom’s guardian after losing to someone from that kingdom. It fought numerous battles against foreign enemies, including prolonged clashes with packs of Arcanine resembling stone guardian lions. Priests once gathered around it to present offerings 104 108 109 121.
Its body was shattered during a war. The underground chamber where it subsequently slept was a recovery room, not a prison or seal. Absol’s ancestors had been friendly with Regirock, and their descendants guarded its resting place and warned humans away 101 104.
Awakening and Capture
Regirock awakens atop a rising stone pillar during Xin Mu’s desert expedition. Initially bewildered by the changed landscape, it shows little interest in the humans nearby. Its ancient speech requires translation through Crobat and the Rotom Phone, with some meanings lost 100 101.
Pokémon hunters catch it off guard with a petrification beam. Xin Mu releases it using a lever on the device’s base, but the enraged Regirock mistakes its rescuers for enemies. Meownei restrains it and drains its energy; after its attacks repeatedly miss, it uses Explosion and shatters its own body 103 104.
Meownei finds a miniature Regirock moving among the rubble, allowing Xin Mu to capture it. Absol explains that Xin Mu’s group is unaffiliated with the hunters. Regirock agrees to accept a victor’s authority, but requests another battle after recovering its full strength 104.
Acceptance of Xin Mu
At the Pokémon Center, Regirock challenges Meownei again, with Xin Mu commanding her and Tang Zi refereeing. It combines Protect with Earthquake, then attempts a Lock-On-guided Fire Punch. Xin Mu directs Meownei into sunlight concentrated by the glass roof, enabling an immediate Solar Beam that interrupts the attack. A subsequent Low Kick brings Regirock down 107 108 109.
Regirock concedes, promises to honor the result, replaces its dislodged stones, and falls asleep to recover. Meownei’s purpose in the rematch is to earn its recognition for Xin Mu, rather than merely establish her own superiority 108 109.
Appearance
- Rock-built body: A large golem assembled from gray and orange stones, with heavy, rumbling joints 100 101.
- Facial lights: Seven flashing dots arranged in an H; their activity conveys its attention, anger, and exhaustion despite its otherwise limited expressions 100 103 109.
- Arms and anatomy: Pillar-like arms without fingers; no obvious mouth or conventional internal organs 107 121 276.
- Weight: Described as heavier than the Pokédex’s listed 230 kilograms, though its actual weight is not measured 103.
- Changing composition: Replacement stones make its body a mixture of materials from different environments and eras 101 122.
- Fairy Tera form: Crystalline armor covers its body, with a large pink heart above its head 275.
Personality
Regirock respects strength and considers defeat in a fair battle a legitimate basis for obedience. Its demand for a full-strength rematch reflects its insistence on an unambiguous result. It later gives Meownei a Leaf Stone because it respects her ability to defeat it 104 107 122.
It is logical and somewhat ceremonial about combat. Although it accepts Tang Zi as the rematch’s referee, it finds her announcement of its surrender unnecessary: to Regirock, a witness need only observe a result both fighters already understand 107 109.
The destruction of its kingdom remains emotionally potent. Darkrai’s nightmares show it a collapsed temple, a shattered kingdom, and wartime fires; rather than frighten it, these memories provoke a furious awakening 266.
In modern life, Regirock prefers remaining in one place and quietly guarding the household. Its adjustment to modern norms also moderates its response to intruders: it knocks would-be thieves unconscious instead of using the harsher measures associated with its former kingdom’s customs 189 284.
Abilities & Skills
Stone Reconstruction and Recovery
Regirock is a collection of stones held together by Pokémon energy rather than an organism with conventional organs 107.
- Replaces lost or damaged pieces with surrounding rocks, including stones selected from Xin Mu’s backyard 101 109 116.
- Can eat ordinary Pokémon food and absorb stones to restore its body; Evolution stones are especially effective 107.
- Draws energy from the earth while resting and can merge directly into the ground 116 121.
- Recovers stamina through eating and sleeping 109.
- Retains Evolution-stone remnants in its body. A Sun Stone fragment accidentally triggers Gloom’s evolution into Bellossom 137.
Explosion and Miniature Survival
Its particular use of Explosion breaks its body into rubble while leaving a fist-sized miniature Regirock mobile among the fragments 103 104.
- The shattered body can be rebuilt rather than treated as a fatal injury 104.
- This is described as Regirock’s special trick, not the normal result of Explosion 104.
- Remaining mobile does not prevent exhaustion: after Giga Drain and Explosion, it has too little stamina to resist capture 104.
Lock-On
Lock-On places a crosshair-like mark on an opponent and guides the next attack toward it. Regirock uses it to compensate for its low speed 108 265.
- Requires lining up the target rather than striking it with a projectile; the mark is consumed after an attack 266.
- Supports ranged combinations with Focus Blast, Stone Edge, and Zap Cannon 265 268 276.
- Can guide a charging Fire Punch, but commits Regirock to that movement and prevents it from evading an incoming counterattack 108.
- Does not bypass Protect. Distance also increases targeting time, and exceptionally fast flying opponents can complicate its attacks 265 268.
Physical Strength and Battlefield Control
Regirock has outstanding physical defense, powerful physical attacks, and extensive wartime experience, but moves slowly and has less impressive Special Defense 108 269 275.
| Move | Documented application |
|---|---|
| Superpower | Attempts to overpower Meownei while its energy is being drained 103. |
| Hammer Arm | Knocks out Darkrai at close range immediately after awakening 266. |
| Fire Punch | Heats its rocky fists through friction, then charges under Lock-On’s guidance 108. |
| Ice Punch | Freezes the section of Gastrodon’s Muddy Water directly ahead of it 276. |
| Stone Edge | Launches ranged physical stone spikes at Articuno 268. |
| Rock Slide | Creates an aerial curtain of rocks that blocks Articuno’s escape routes; later dislodges Gastrodon from its body 268 276. |
| Earthquake | Shakes and splits the training ground while Regirock simultaneously uses Protect 108. |
| Protect | Blocks Meownei’s Aura Sphere; cannot stop Gastrodon’s point-blank attacks once the opponent is already clinging inside the barrier’s space 108 276. |
| Focus Blast | Uses a ranged Fighting attack against Darkrai, overcoming its opposing Dark Pulse 265 266. |
Electric-Type Attacks
Despite its Rock typing, Regirock has a particular aptitude for Thunder and Zap Cannon 268.
- Thunder: Finishes Articuno after Rock Slide restricts its movement, and paralyzes Togekiss during the battle with Cynthia 268 276.
- Zap Cannon: Combines with Lock-On to strike Togekiss after paralysis interrupts Dazzling Gleam 276.
- Weather interaction: Its electrical discharge gathers nearly dispersed clouds into a thunderstorm over the battlefield 276.
Fairy Terastallization
Regirock’s Fairy Tera Type is selected to address its original typing’s vulnerabilities and threaten Cynthia’s Garchomp 273 275 276.
- Changes type quickly enough to resist an incoming Aura Sphere 275.
- Makes Gastrodon’s Poison-type Sludge Bomb dangerous; Gastrodon’s Ground typing also neutralizes Regirock’s Electric attacks 276.
- Does not remove its mobility limitations or prevent an opponent from clinging to its body 276.
Relationships
- Xin Mu — Trainer and current household owner. Earns Regirock’s allegiance through the rematch and entrusts it with protecting the property during travel 109 129 169.
- Meownei — Defeats it twice, helps resolve its misunderstanding, and secures its recognition of Xin Mu. Receives a Leaf Stone as a gesture of respect 103 104 108 109 122.
- Absol — Watches over its resting place according to ancestral instructions, follows the hunters to seek a rescue opportunity, and explains the situation after Regirock’s capture 101 104.
- Lü Ming — Arranges research access, land use, and contact with Steven in connection with studying Regirock 104 118.
- Steven Stone — Admires Regirock as a remarkable stone specimen. Supplies more Evolution stones than the other symposium participants combined and trades a Lucario Mega Stone for a body specimen 121 122 129.
- Professor Oak — Investigates its former relationship with humans through translated speech and later sends Ash a small fragment of its body 122 129.
- Eevee family — Backyard residents under its protection; Regirock stops three intruders attempting to capture an Eevee for sale 188 189.
- Squirtle — Household companion who receives permission to lick one of its stones and later discovers that its sun-heated body is unsuitable for cooling off 217 220.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Research Symposium
Regirock consents to being studied by visiting professors. Part of their access time is allocated according to expertise and seniority; the remainder depends on which donated stones Regirock prefers 121.
Its body proves valuable as a geological archive. Researchers identify ancient wind-deposited sandstone, preserved air bubbles and pollen indicating seasonal desert oases, volcanic material, marine Pokémon fossils, and river erosion. Pokémon professors separately examine its energy absorption, while Oak studies its historical relationship with the kingdom 122.
The research concludes before Mania returns to Paldea. A larger internal specimen has been exchanged with Steven, while Oak’s smaller fragment becomes a souvenir for Ash 125 129.
Household Guardian
- Settles near Xin Mu’s back door, preferring the backyard and its hot spring to indoor accommodation 116.
- Remains alert beneath accumulated snow, recognizing returning household members before deciding whether to act 134.
- Joins the Lunar New Year gathering and pounds pork into mince for dumplings 148.
- Guards the home during the Hoenn expedition and knocks out three intruders who arrive separately to steal Eevee. Officer Jenny later obtains an admission that they intended to sell it 169 188 189.
- Directs Xin Mu to Sylveon’s burrow, where packages have been stored to keep them dry 218.
- Returns to its familiar half-dormant guarding position after the championship journey 284.
Sinnoh League and Champion Battle
| Opponent | Outcome | Key events |
|---|---|---|
| Tobias’s Darkrai | Victory | Makes its first appearance of the tournament in the final. Focus Blast wins the initial clash; nightmares provoke it to awaken and finish Darkrai with Hammer Arm 265 266. |
| Tobias’s Articuno | Victory | Initially forced out by Whirlwind. After returning, it pressures Articuno with Stone Edge and Rock Slide before landing Thunder 267 268. |
| Cynthia’s Togekiss | Victory | Terastallizes into Fairy, resists Aura Sphere, and wins through Thunder-induced paralysis followed by Lock-On and Zap Cannon 275 276. |
| Cynthia’s Gastrodon | Recalled | Freezes part of Muddy Water, but Gastrodon clings to its body and repeatedly uses Sludge Bomb. Rock Slide forces separation, allowing Xin Mu to withdraw it 276. |
Trivia
- Its ancient vocabulary remains difficult to translate even after joining Xin Mu’s household; prolonged sleep also leaves some memories slow to surface 111.
- Regirock recognizes the shell-bearing Sliggoo brought home by Xin Mu as resembling the Sliggoo of its own era 262.
- Its stone body can become hot enough in direct sunlight to evaporate droplets of water on contact 220.
- Meownei identifies Regirock and Squirtle as the household’s only Pokémon obtained after being defeated in battle 198.
