Power Progression
Squirtle grows stronger without evolving. His Everstone preserves his initial form despite a level high enough for rapid evolution into Blastoise if he removes it 76.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established high-level Squirtle | 57 58 59 | Already possesses Hydro Pump, Dig, Mud Shot, Ice Beam, and Aura techniques before joining Xin Mu. His broad move pool comes from more than two centuries of life rather than formal Trainer instruction. |
| Accelerated defensive training | 63 | Begins training under Meownei with wooden dummies that accelerate improvement and reduce bottlenecks. He personally notices their strengthening effect. |
| Reactive Aura shell developed | 66 77 | Conceives an Aura-coated shell that retaliates against attacks, then successfully develops it into a technique compared to Turtonator’s explosive shell. |
| Rest mastered | 131 | Demonstrates genuine stamina recovery while sleeping between Gym matches. Meownei confirms the move through its energy fluctuations. |
| Ice Punch mastered | 145 | Reveals a self-taught move inspired by watching Meownei and Regirock use elemental punches. His original goal is cooling hot bowls. |
| Zen Headbutt learned | 198 | After earlier difficulties, reports that he has essentially learned the move through spinning practice assisted by Lucario’s staff. |
| Gyro Ball learned | 212 | Daily head-spinning exercises inspired by a televised Hitmontop competition produce another move, which he uses in the Star Match. |
| Dynamax demonstrated | 214 | Xin Mu Dynamaxes him after his earlier consumption of Max Soup. The transformation is temporary; the supplied account identifies it as Dynamax rather than confirming a Gigantamax form. |
Background / History
Squirtle spent much of his long life at sea, with limited contact with modern human society. As a young turtle, he rescued a shipwrecked captain and brought him home to what was then a small fishing village. The captain taught him to repay people for things he took, and Squirtle later used pearls and gold recovered from sunken ships as payment 60.
He deliberately remained unevolved because his small, cute appearance made obtaining food from humans easier. Although he accumulated numerous moves, he spent most of his time playing rather than training. Before meeting Xin Mu, he also caught himself in a discarded Poké Ball to prevent humans from catching him, sometimes using it as a place to hibernate 59 60.
His theft of Xin Mu’s Pokéblocks brought him into conflict with Meownei. He attempted to escape with his varied moves and a prepared tunnel, but she restrained and defeated him. Unable to win or get away, he accepted Xin Mu’s offer of unlimited Pokéblocks 58 59.
The attempted capture initially failed because Squirtle already occupied his own Poké Ball—a detail he had forgotten to mention. He destroyed that ball with Bite, then eagerly caught himself again using one from Xin Mu’s belt. Meownei verified that his claim of intending to repay the stolen food was genuine, but still taught him that taking goods without permission was unacceptable even if he left payment afterward 59 60.
At Xin Mu’s new home, Squirtle selected a sunlit ground-floor pool rather than a bedroom. Meownei immediately placed him into regular training; once he recognized the equipment’s effectiveness, he began imagining that decades of improvement might make him an overlord of the deep sea 63.
Appearance
- Unevolved build: Retains a normal Squirtle’s small appearance through an Everstone stored inside his shell 59 76.
- Shell storage: Keeps objects inside his shell, including his Everstone, an old Poké Ball, and a pearl used to demonstrate his payment habits 60 76.
- Nimble hands: Can handle bowls, perform crafts, and manage the fireplace 121 144 145.
- Unchanged physique: Despite his enormous appetite, Meownei observes that he still has a normal Squirtle’s build. Squirtle claims he has never been able to become fat 152.
Personality
Squirtle’s priorities are good food, good drinks, and uninterrupted sleep. He favors warm pools, chilled juice, and convenient living arrangements, even proposing waterslides to avoid walking between his sleeping spot and the hot spring. Food-related work is the exception to his laziness: he willingly washes dishes and reheats meals because those tasks protect his current and future dining opportunities 77 145 195.
He is narcissistic, shameless, and quick with excuses. He invokes his age when claiming seniority, then emphasizes his youth by Squirtle standards when it suits him. His attempts to preserve his dignity often backfire: after dismissing a snowball fight as childish, he becomes its enthusiastic commander and ends up buried under his own oversized snowball 58 59 110 131.
His reluctance to train does not mean he lacks talent or persistence. He develops useful techniques when they make life easier, and food rewards can restore his willingness to battle almost instantly. Pride also pushes him beyond his usual limits, as shown when he refuses to withdraw against White Cloud Gym’s Snorlax despite being exhausted 130 145 198 232.
Squirtle is opportunistic rather than wholly indifferent to others. He has a longstanding practice of paying for goods he takes, and he can give away money or valuable items without hesitation. Food placed directly in his hands, however, is much harder for him to relinquish 60 273.
He enjoys radio storytelling and horror movies, but sometimes treats fiction as fact. His fear of a large mosquito Pokémon comes from a story about the Turtle-Spirit Holy Mother rather than an established personal experience with mosquitoes 246 248.
Abilities & Skills
Aura
Squirtle possesses inherited Aura-related abilities, although his Aura is weaker than Meownei’s 59 66 139.
- Telepathic communication: Connects directly with Xin Mu through Aura. Meownei can join the connection, defeating his attempt to bargain privately 59.
- Selective communication: Uses a frequency that Xin Mu and Lucario can receive while other household Pokémon cannot 152.
- Aura Sphere: An inherited move; his attack is overpowered by Meownei’s during their initial confrontation 59 139.
- Detection: Locates Excadrill underground and senses reactions from Riolu while she is still an egg 66 76.
- Team coordination: Receives Xin Mu’s Aura warning in time to evade Slaking’s Thunder with Dig 231.
Reactive Shell / “Exploding Turtle Shell”
Squirtle attaches Aura to his shell to create a defensive technique with an explosive retaliatory effect 66 77 83.
- Developed from his idea of combining an Aura shield with Aura Sphere’s offensive properties 66.
- Provides a model for Riolu’s own explosive, Aura-enhanced attacks 77 82 83.
- Meownei later proposes combining it with Shell Smash to evade an attack while increasing offensive stats and speed; successful execution of that combination is not documented 157.
Water and Ice Techniques
Squirtle combines powerful Water-type attacks with freezing techniques for direct combat, terrain control, and household tasks 76 113 145 150.
| Move | Documented use |
|---|---|
| Water Gun | Soaks an opposing Trainer after defeating Excadrill; a warm-water washing attempt accidentally incapacitates the weakened Litten 76 138. |
| Hydro Pump | Powerful enough to surprise Meownei at their first encounter; later defeats numerous Gym challengers and wears down Slaking 57 130 232. |
| Aqua Tail | Defeats Excadrill after Aura reveals its underground location 76. |
| Liquidation | Envelops his body in water and uses Whirlpool’s momentum to escape Kingdra’s attack 113. |
| Wave Crash | Follows Rocket Headbutt to defeat White Cloud Gym’s Vigoroth 231. |
| Ice Beam | Freezes restraining vines, Kingdra’s battlefield, and portions of Xuantai Gym’s arena 58 113 130. |
| Ice Punch | Cools hot soup, freezes another Squirtle’s Water Gun, and eventually freezes Slaking during their battle 145 171 232. |
| Rain Dance | Creates a heavy backyard downpour that enables Hisuian Sliggoo to evolve into Goodra 262. |
Mobility, Defense, and Physical Attacks
His small form conceals considerable defensive experience and an unusually varied move pool 58 76 263.
| Move / Skill | Applications and limits |
|---|---|
| Dig | Uses prepared tunnels to escape, navigates underground battles, evades Thunder, and harasses Snorlax through an existing tunnel network 58 76 231 232. |
| Mud Shot | Fires mud projectiles to throw up beach sand during his escape attempt 58. |
| Protect | Helps him survive Slaking’s attacks during a prolonged battle of attrition 232. |
| Bite | Destroys his original Poké Ball 60. |
| Rocket Headbutt | Used against Vigoroth and Snorlax; his headbutt training also makes his head resistant to an ordinary swat from Torracat 207 231 232. |
| Zen Headbutt | Learned through assisted spinning practice after difficulty directing Psychic-type energy into anything other than Rest 168 198. |
| Gyro Ball | Breaks through Alcremie’s restraints and disrupts Mienshao. Tailwind reduces its speed-based damage advantage but makes his approach harder to predict 212 213. |
| Shell Smash | Identified among his moves; lowers defenses to raise offensive stats and speed 82 157. |
| U-turn | Immediately leaves the field when faced with Articuno, bringing Regirock back into battle 267. |
| Evasion and durability | Impresses the younger Pokémon during his final pre-conference training examination 263. |
Rest and Endurance
Squirtle independently masters Rest and uses sleep to recover stamina between separate Gym matches 131.
- Can hibernate for months and has previously done so inside a Poké Ball 60 157.
- Claims that, when healthy and well-fed, he can go roughly a month without eating 100.
- Can maintain prolonged stillness, but falling asleep costs him a contest against Infernape 87.
- Ignores fragrant food used to distract entrants in a mall staring contest 158.
- Has finite stamina: successive battles against Slaking and Snorlax genuinely exhaust him 232.
Dynamax and Appetite-Based Combat
After drinking an entire pot of Max Soup, Squirtle later becomes Xin Mu’s choice for a Dynamax experiment while still unevolved 145 214.
- Neutralizes Alcremie’s cream restraint by eating it rather than escaping conventionally 213.
- While Dynamaxed, licks cream from Gigantamax Alcremie until it faints 214.
- Helps Mismagius defeat Mienshao and pressures Weezing and Kommo-o 214.
- Overeats during the match and must be replaced by Meownei 214.
Crafts and Household Work
Squirtle has practical skills acquired over his long life, including a family tradition of weaving 144.
- Weaves grass mats and makes straw sandals; he says his great-grandfather learned sandal-making from a human 144.
- Creates patterned ice lanterns fitted with rechargeable candle lights, including one requested by Lucario 150.
- Manages the fireplace, with his Water typing providing a way to extinguish accidental fires 121.
- Regularly handles washing dishes and reheating food 195.
Training Limits
- Torrent: Avoids trying to activate it at full health because he sees no benefit to eating or relaxing; mastery of voluntary activation is unconfirmed 175.
- Agility: Claims prompt Meownei to investigate whether he can learn it, but successful use is not shown 145.
- Hydro Cannon: Jinbei explains its training principles but doubts Squirtle’s current body can withstand it. Squirtle later expresses a preference for learning it over practicing Fake Out, without demonstrating mastery 185 191.
- Literacy: Cannot read. He relies on spoken material, pictures, recognizable symbols, and scanning functions rather than written instructions 191 234 246.
- Temperature tolerance: Prefers warm water and suitable ambient temperatures; cold water and volcanic heat discourage him from remaining outside his Poké Ball 110 182 190.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Everstone — Stored inside his shell to prevent evolution and preserve his convenient, cute appearance 59 76.
- Poké Ball — Enjoys resting inside it. His original self-acquired ball is destroyed before he catches himself in one belonging to Xin Mu 60.
- Pearls and salvaged valuables — Recovered from sunken ships and used as compensation for goods taken from humans 60.
- Self-woven grass mat — Used as a comfortable place for post-meal rest 144.
- Snorlax’s Sleep Philosophy — Xin Mu reads it aloud at his request, but Squirtle falls asleep before the first page is finished 241.
Relationships
- Xin Mu — Trainer and provider of the food-centered lifestyle Squirtle wants. Their partnership begins with unlimited Pokéblocks, and Squirtle later rejects an attempt to trade him away 59 60 171.
- Meownei — Recruiter, training supervisor, and chief source of pressure to improve. She defeats him at their first meeting, recognizes his talent, and frequently counters his excuses 58 63 131 145.
- Riolu / Lucario — Protects her egg, advises her on Aura, and influences her explosive fighting style. Later becomes her reluctant sparring partner and recruits her help for spinning-based training 72 77 83 168 198.
- Litten / Torracat / Incineroar — Initially tries to turn the newcomer into a subordinate through misleading “survival rules.” Her enthusiasm and eventual muscular evolution worry him because they imply more training obligations 139 140 175 191.
- Corvisquire / Corviknight — Attempts to recruit him as a lackey by sharing unwanted food; later proposes using him for transport between waterslides 100 195.
- Regirock — Admires his legitimate reasons for sleeping, though Regirock’s far greater age undermines Squirtle’s seniority claims 110 175.
- Tang Zi — Borrows him for a shipboard revenge match, which he wins before continuing a successful run against other challengers 171.
- White Cloud Gym’s Snorlax — Defeats him in both battle and an eating contest. Squirtle nevertheless befriends it and asks how it fights while sleeping 232 234.
- Hisuian Goodra — Squirtle supplies the rain needed for its evolution, then receives an affectionate, sticky embrace despite his protests 262.
- Ditto — Their exchanges become frustrating because Ditto uses written cue boards Squirtle cannot read; hiding one board fails when Ditto forms another on its own body 281 283.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Arc / Event | Squirtle’s role |
|---|---|
| Household integration | Becomes Meownei’s training pupil and serves as security for Riolu’s egg before resuming regular exercise after she hatches 63 72. |
| Excadrill encounter | Demonstrates that his unevolved appearance is misleading by tracking and defeating a newly evolved Excadrill underground 76. |
| Backyard Eevee arrival | Detects hidden wild Pokémon, calls Meownei for assistance, and intimidates the wary Eevee into allowing Xin Mu to treat an injured member 87 88. |
| Water-type Gym challenge | Escapes Kingdra’s Whirlpool and freezes the arena. Zhao Ying ends the battle early and awards Xin Mu the Cascade Badge after recognizing Squirtle’s strength 113. |
| Acting Gym Leader duty | Defeats challengers from sunrise to noon at Xuantai Gym. Promised premium meals, he volunteers for more battles and reveals his mastery of Rest between matches 130 131. |
| Galar Star Match | His unconventional cream-eating tactics help defeat Alcremie but cause the entire Squirtle species to trend, attracting embarrassment and dubious commentary about its suitability as a starter 213 214 215. |
| White Cloud Gym | Defeats Vigoroth and Slaking, then refuses withdrawal against Snorlax and loses. A subsequent buffet contest turns his rival into a friend and fuels his interest in sleep-based fighting 231 232 234 241. |
| Sinnoh conference preparations | Helps evolve Sliggoo, passes a demanding final training examination, and later switches out immediately when confronted by Articuno 262 263 267. |

Trivia
- Meownei’s accusations of “senile dementia” follow his forgetfulness and awkward decisions; Squirtle rejects them and attributes his behavior to prolonged isolation. No diagnosis is established 59 60.
- Claims that a long-lived relative met Arceus, but the account’s truth is explicitly uncertain 251.
- His cute appearance continues to pay off after joining Xin Mu: an ice-cream vendor gives him two extra scoops for apparently shopping on his Trainer’s behalf, and Squirtle keeps the bonus for himself 272 273.
