Background / History

Sunagakure and capture

Sasori grew up in Sunagakure under Granny Chiyo’s protection after losing his parents. Her care sheltered him from much of the village’s political maneuvering. As a child, he made two puppets called “Father and Mother” 76 87 114.

He assassinated the Third Kazekage and converted him into a human puppet, an act identified as a catalyst for the Third Shinobi World War. At fifteen, he encountered Jing Xiu in the Land of Wind. Jing Xiu destroyed Hiruko, sealed Sasori’s chakra, and confiscated the Kazekage puppet, initially regarding his capture as political leverage for the Uchiha Clan 70.

Becoming Jing Xiu’s companion

Their shared interest in constructs and the human body transformed the captivity into a working partnership. Sasori helped forge the Body Tempering Furnace at Indra Temple. After more than half a year together, Jing Xiu had removed his restraints, but Sasori no longer wanted either escape or revenge: he regarded their life together as the family companionship he had long wanted 70 71 72.

Third Shinobi World War

At the Land of Water camp, Sasori used newly crafted White Zetsu puppets to poison and defeat Uchiha Fugaku. He then accompanied Jing Xiu toward the Land of Earth, helped construct more than a hundred surveillance bugs, and spent months infiltrating Iwagakure under changing identities. Jing Xiu assigned him to secure Thread Gorge as an escape route 75 76 77.

On the Land of Wind front, Sasori fought a restrained stalemate with Orochimaru. Jing Xiu insisted that Sasori was his personal captive, not Konoha’s prisoner, preventing the village from simply claiming authority over him 83.

At Kikyo Mountain, Sasori’s Third Kazekage puppet became the centerpiece of a plan to draw Sunagakure out of its defensive position. When Granny Chiyo fought Jing Xiu, Sasori refused to turn against either of them and instead knelt to beg for her life. Land of Waves and later operations

Jing Xiu entrusted Sasori with project plans, startup funds, and equipment purchases, then instructed him to seize control of the Land of Waves and become its daimyo. The supplied material does not confirm that Sasori formally obtained that title 96 97.

Their subsequent research addressed ninja aptitude, puppet clones, kekkei genkai, and the Ōtsutsuki bloodline. Sasori also assisted with Kimimaro’s experimental treatment. Final stand and death

The coalition hunting Jing Xiu targeted Sasori to obtain his assistance and pressure Granny Chiyo into cooperating. Pursued by seven Kage-level Akatsuki members, he lost his left arm and White Zetsu puppet army but escaped their initial combined assault. When cornered again, he rejected their claim that they only wanted to take him to his grandmother 129.

Sasori activated the talisman Jing Xiu had left him years earlier and summoned three thousand spirit puppets. Determined to eliminate Jing Xiu’s future enemies, he continued fighting despite catastrophic mental strain and opened the Gate of Opening to improve his control 130 131.

Sasori died when his sea of consciousness collapsed. The spirit army briefly regained consciousness before answering Yomi’s summons and disappearing. Konan ordered Black Zetsu to retrieve his body 131.

Jing Xiu later mourned him at the battlefield, acknowledging that his scattered soul made revival extremely difficult even with his newly mastered Rinnegan. He vowed to punish Zetsu, recovered Sasori’s remains, and sealed them in a coffin inside his Devouring Pouch Orb 132 133.

Personality

Around Jing Xiu, Sasori was cheerful, inquisitive, and eager for approval. Their shared research gave him a sense of belonging, and his attachment was closer to that of a younger brother than an unquestioning subordinate. Jing Xiu explicitly distinguished this bond from Kimimaro’s absolute obedience 72 77 128.

Toward outsiders, he remained proud and unruly. He initially dismissed Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan and tended to trust his techniques more than reconnaissance. Jing Xiu repeatedly tried to teach him that intelligence gathering was central to shinobi combat 77 81.

His loyalty was personal rather than institutional. He felt little attachment to Sunagakure or its Kazekage, but Chiyo’s love remained irreplaceable. His plea at Kikyo Mountain preserved that family bond without betraying Jing Xiu; his final battle likewise centered on reducing the dangers his companion would face 87 131.
