First Appearance Chapter 9, “Shimura Danzō”

Appearance

Danzo is a middle-aged man with crossed scars on his chin. His expression is usually stern or unreadable, and Xue Ge finds his presence menacing 9 16 21.

  • Chin scars: A recognizable feature when he confronts the Kumogakure envoy 123.
  • Voice: Slightly hoarse 24 129.
  • Weapon placement: Carries a short sword behind his back and can draw a concealed kunai from his sleeve 9.

Personality

Danzo approaches mentorship as an investment in useful, controllable subordinates. He initially considers Xue Ge a disposable weapon, a convenient answer to pressure to take an apprentice, and a test subject for procedures he refuses to risk on himself. He accepts medicine expected to kill the boy before twenty, reasoning that the remaining years would be sufficient for his purposes 10.

His coldness coexists with meticulous practical support. He arranges prosthetics, medicine, instructors, replacement weapons, and techniques adapted to Xue Ge’s condition. He also takes pride in his disciple’s achievements, although Hiruzen has to expose the smugness concealed beneath his stern manner 21 28 48 56 86.

Danzo is possessive of his authority and deeply suspicious of the Uchiha. He tolerates Xue Ge’s friendship with them only while he believes it remains controllable. In village diplomacy, he rejects concessions made under threats, but can cooperate with Hiruzen in a staged confrontation rather than simply demanding war 62 89 123 124.

Background / History

Earlier career and political ambitions

Danzo followed the Second Hokage for years and was once Hiruzen Sarutobi’s teammate. He competed with Hiruzen for the Hokage position but became a Konoha elder instead. He later acknowledges that age will probably prevent him from succeeding Hiruzen personally, while insisting that he has not abandoned his ambition 90 91.

During the war in the Land of Rain, Danzo fights Chiyo, whom he has not met since the previous Shinobi World War. Her makeshift puppets wound his face, but he notes that they had not been poisoned. After the enemy withdraws, he orders prisoners taken to Konoha, specifically warning that some may possess useful talents 9.

Rescuing and adopting Xue Ge

Danzo’s Wind Release attack incidentally saves the severely injured Xue Ge from flames and an enemy ninja. He subsequently questions the boy at swordpoint about his injuries, origins, name, and desire to live. After deciding to spare him, Danzo carries him away and names him Waterbird River Xue Ge, taking inspiration from the nearby river and a startled waterbird 9.

He sees the isolated, disabled orphan as a promising recruit: someone without clan ties who can be raised into a trusted follower. He also senses a talent for killing. Adopting a commoner allows him to take an heir without becoming entangled in the political demands of major clans seeking an apprenticeship 9 10.

Training and bloodline experiments

Danzo commissions puppet prosthetics from a captured Puppet Master and arranges an extreme training program lasting at least four years. En oversees the regimen, which permits only two hours of sleep and is intended to culminate in live combat against En himself 10.

To sustain that training, Danzo obtains special medicine and Soldier Pills through Orochimaru. Orochimaru warns that modified Hero Water reduces fatigue at the cost of accumulating internal injuries, persistent pain, and an expected death before twenty without substantial treatment. Danzo accepts those terms while leaving open the possibility of obtaining medical care if Xue Ge proves valuable enough 10.

Their partnership also involves supplying experimental subjects and researching transplanted bloodlines. Initial tests using Xue Ge’s cells fail with Hashirama cells, Transparent Release chakra, Kurama clan cells, and the Sharingan. Despite those failures, Danzo promises more Sharingan, foreign kekkei genkai, and a new batch of subjects consisting mostly of children 10 31.

Academy years and control of Root

After seeing Xue Ge defeat Guy, Danzo orders him to graduate from the Ninja Academy within one year. He arranges a comparison match with Kakashi and is pleased when the two draw. He later provides combat-ninjutsu scrolls and rewards Xue Ge’s first-semester results with the Shadow Clone Technique and a version of the forbidden Multiple Shadow Clone Technique modified by Hiruzen for his condition 16 21 28 56.

When Xue Ge disappears through a contractless Summoning Technique, Danzo angrily demands action from Hiruzen and Orochimaru. He opposes officially notifying foreign villages, fearing they will recognize the value of his stranded disciple. During the crisis, he obtains a written appointment allowing him to deploy Root personnel directly, privately celebrating that actual control of Root is finally his 40.

Under his leadership, Root shifts toward recruiting and training children. Danzo adapts less extreme versions of Xue Ge’s regimen for groups of recruits, believing that members of a special organization must be raised from childhood to be trustworthy 40 90.

Team Minato and the Hyuga arrangement

Xue Ge graduates in six months and joins Team Minato with Kakashi and Shisui Uchiha. Danzo objects to Shisui’s placement, but Hiruzen overrules him. As Xue Ge grows closer to the Uchiha, Danzo watches his visits and considers how to prevent the relationship from escaping his control 62 89.

Danzo then approaches Hiashi Hyuga with a proposal to cultivate Xue Ge as a future Hokage. He argues that Xue Ge’s foreign birth requires support from established village powers and presents the boy’s Uchiha connection as part of a broader political arrangement, despite having opposed Shisui’s team assignment 90 91.

The agreement offers Hyuga backing and a prospective marriage alliance: any children inheriting the Byakugan would take the Hyuga surname. Danzo also seeks a Byakugan-wielding child for Root without the Caged Bird Seal. After the elders agree to proceed, he selects Natsu Hyuga, a four-year-old Branch Family member, to become seven-year-old Xue Ge’s student 90 91 93.

Kumogakure negotiations

Danzo warns Xue Ge to avoid visiting Kumogakure envoys and denounces their proposed exchanges as an attempt to extract benefits from Konoha. When negotiations later involve demands against Xue Ge, he bursts into the conference room, breaks the table’s edge, and challenges the suggestion that Konoha should sacrifice its own ninja to preserve peace 109 123.

The confrontation is subsequently revealed to be a performance coordinated with Hiruzen and Sakumo. Hiashi, Fugaku, and Jiraiya join after independently approaching Danzo, strengthening the display of opposition. Although the dispute is staged, Danzo explicitly promises Hiruzen his support if war becomes unavoidable 124.

New Year and the Chunin Ninja Exams

At New Year, Xue Ge decorates Danzo’s secluded home and prepares a feast with his mission earnings. During the meal, Danzo relays Hiruzen’s offer to transfer Xue Ge into the Hokage Guard Platoon. When Danzo admits he does not want to surrender a weapon he has spent years cultivating, Xue Ge immediately chooses to remain in Root 128.

Xue Ge subsequently acknowledges Danzo’s exploitation but also credits him with saving and training him. He offers to remain a weapon voluntarily, provided his personal boundaries are respected, while rejecting interest in becoming Hokage. Danzo responds by observing how greatly he has changed 129.

As chief examiner for the joint Chunin Ninja Exams, Danzo gives Xue Ge advance intelligence and explains the procedures without helping him cheat. He demands that his adopted son defeat every opponent in the elimination tournament and finish first 86 132 134.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Release

Danzo demonstrates lethal, large-scale Wind Release and provides instruction in its principles 9 24.

  • Wind Release: Vacuum Great Sphere: Clears approaching flames and tears an enemy ninja apart with an invisible shock wave 9.
  • Technique instruction: Offers to explain Wind Release: Great Breakthrough and help simplify its hand seals 24.
  • Combination tactics: Previously combined his Wind Release with Hiruzen’s Fire Release to amplify their attacks 60.

Seals and Subordinate Control

Danzo uses seals to safeguard his secrets and retain control over selected followers 31 89.

  • Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal: His trusted ANBU faction bears this seal, allowing him to discuss clandestine research in their presence without fearing disclosure 31.
  • Self-Karma Binding: Placed on Xue Ge as insurance because Danzo cannot determine whether his attempts at indoctrination have succeeded 89.
  • Surveillance: Root personnel watch Xue Ge, though they do not prevent Orochimaru from visiting him 150.

Training and Ninjutsu Instruction

Danzo organizes instructors, training schedules, and techniques around a subordinate’s intended role and physical limitations 10 28 48 56.

  • Compiles practical Wind Release and Lightning Release material collected from ANBU ninja 28 30.
  • Agrees to teach Xue Ge the Storage Technique, which would let him carry spare prosthetic limbs 30.
  • Explains shadow clones’ memory transfer, training applications, and the danger of accumulated exhaustion and chakra depletion 56.
  • Uses Xue Ge’s training as a prototype for Root’s child-recruit program 40.

Sharingan Compatibility

  • Orochimaru identifies Danzo’s cells as compatible with the Sharingan. This establishes cellular compatibility, not a documented Sharingan transplant or awakening for Danzo 166.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Short sword: Carried behind his back; used to threaten and question Xue Ge before rescuing him 9.
  • Kunai: Concealed in his sleeve and drawn when attacking Chiyo 9.

Relationships

  • Waterbird River Xue Ge — Adopted son, disciple, intended successor, weapon, and experimental subject. Xue Ge eventually makes his continued loyalty conditional on Danzo respecting his boundaries 9 10 129.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teammate and political rival. Their arguments coexist with longstanding tactical cooperation; Hiruzen nevertheless considers Danzo’s temperament unsuitable for the Hokage position 49 50 60 90 124.
  • Orochimaru — Research partner supplied with subjects, bloodline material, and funding. Their cooperation is not transparent: Orochimaru later instructs Lin Yi to conceal Xue Ge’s experimental records from Danzo 10 31 151.
  • En — Trusted subordinate responsible for Xue Ge’s early training and for managing Root during Danzo’s absence 10 90 93.
  • Iris Moon — Injured outsider whom Danzo brought to Konoha despite a fierce argument with Hiruzen. She belongs to Root, answers only to Danzo, and becomes Xue Ge’s dedicated instructor 48 52.
  • Lin Yi — War orphan placed with Orochimaru as an assistant and messenger. She later supplies Orochimaru with information copied from Danzo’s office 31 151.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Xue Ge’s teammate, whose growing influence Danzo distrusts. Danzo publicly praises his Three-Tomoe Sharingan while privately worrying about his ties to Xue Ge 62 86 89.
  • Hiashi Hyuga — Negotiating partner in the proposed political and marriage alliance built around Xue Ge 90 91.
  • Chiyo — Battlefield opponent and acquaintance from the previous Shinobi World War 9.
