Background / History
Previous Life
Xue Ge was an orphan whose closest childhood companion was a girl he met at a park. Her father severely injured her, and Xue Ge lost sight in one eye during the same incident. The girl later died. These experiences influenced his decision to become a volunteer teacher working in poverty alleviation in the southwestern region 55.
After several years of teaching, he lost his footing on a mountain path and fell to his death. Although reincarnated into the ninja world, he had no familiarity with the original Naruto story 17.
War Orphan and Danzo’s Ward
In his new life, Xue Ge was born in the Land of Rain. His village was destroyed during fighting between Sunagakure and Konoha, and he was caught on the battlefield as a small child. He lost his left eye, left arm, and right leg; his birth parents were killed 8 24 39 70.
Danzo brought him to Konoha and arranged for chakra training and wooden prosthetic limbs. Danzo’s subordinates understood that Xue Ge was to become his apprentice, adopted son, and eventual heir, although En handled most of his daily care and instruction 10.
For four years, Xue Ge followed an extreme training schedule and underwent painful treatments in Orochimaru’s laboratory each night. At six, he entered the Ninja Academy and subsequently moved into Danzo’s home. The treatments left him with constant, severe bodily pain 11 12 17.
Appearance
- Missing left eye: Usually fitted with a prosthetic eye; his hair can cover the socket 39.
- Wooden left arm and right leg: Puppet prosthetics controlled through Chakra Threads 10 24.
- Walking aid: Commonly uses a crutch or cane outside combat 12 18 33.
- Concealed weapons: His prosthetic forearm contains a short blade, while his cane conceals a sword 20.
- Overload manifestation: Black mist rises from his body; purple traces later appear within it as his condition changes 114 116.
- Uncontrolled manifestation: Develops beastlike pupils, a purple chakra cloak, and chakra arms 120.
Personality
Xue Ge is reserved, pragmatic, and unusually mature for his age. His previous adulthood and four years of brutal conditioning leave him composed but detached from ordinary childhood. He finds academy work easy and struggles to relate to classmates raised in loving families 12 17 21.
He approaches training analytically, recording failed attempts, breaking techniques into components, and adapting them to his abnormal chakra circulation. In dangerous fights, pressure can sharpen rather than disrupt his thinking; he completes Righteous Piercing when he has only one opportunity to strike 30 32 109 115.
His apparent indifference conceals a pronounced gentleness toward children. He teaches patiently, protects vulnerable companions, and encourages Karura to value perseverance rather than measure herself solely by combat strength. Conversely, he kills violent criminals without much hesitation. Ameyuri’s combination of childhood and bloodthirstiness provokes anger that surprises his teammates 94 95 146 170.
His loyalty to Danzo is qualified rather than unquestioning. He recognizes that Danzo treats him as a tool, but remains grateful for being saved and trained. He explicitly agrees to serve as a weapon only while doing so does not cross his personal bottom line 129.
Abilities & Skills
Taijutsu and Swordsmanship
His strongest early discipline is taijutsu, developed through ANBU instruction and sparring with experienced ninja such as Sakumo. He defeats Might Guy by assessing his attacks, controlling their angles, and baiting him with a false prosthetic malfunction 15.
- Uses precise parries, joint control, throws, feints, and abrupt changes of speed 15 94.
- Combines a Cane Sword with the short blade inside his prosthetic arm, producing unusual attack paths and reach 20.
- Treats prosthetics as expendable: he can detach sections to trap weapons or expose concealed blades 20.
- Initially loses ground to Kakashi’s footwork while coordinating his prosthetics 20.
- Iris Moon trains him to react instinctively rather than rely entirely on consciously reading an opponent 53.
- Defeats Ameyuri through defense, misdirection, disarming strikes, and close-range control 171.
Chakra Threads and Strangling Line
Chakra Threads begin as the means of operating his prosthetic limbs, then become the foundation of his personal fighting style 10 33.
- Remote manipulation: Detaches and moves his prosthetic arm through the air 33.
- Strangling Line: Spirals two finer threads around a main thread, accelerating their rotation on impact to gouge stone and tear flesh 33.
- Body Manipulation Technique: Uses threads and their reaction forces to swing, redirect, or suspend his body in combat 59 115.
- Lightning enhancement: Employs lightning-infused threads against Anrokuzan and uses Lightning Release: Strangling Flash Peal to bind and shock Ameyuri 72 168.
- Limits: His initial thread control is insufficient for a proper puppet. Madara stops Strangling Line through precise chakra control, while Ameyuri cuts the threads with lightning-coated swords 33 38 169.
Rasengan
Xue Ge discusses rotational chakra with Minato during the technique’s development and later learns to perform it himself. Its principles also inspire Strangling Line 23 30 33.
- Offers greater destructive power than either Strangling Line or his imitation Righteous Piercing 117.
- Forms a thread-based spherical technique, Strangling Thread Rasengan, when Sara faces an incoming fireball 73.
- Uses the Rasengan defensively against projectiles and Karura’s Scorch Release 38 155.
- Early execution is incomplete; Madara disperses it with a slap 38.
Wind Release, Lightning Release, and Righteous Piercing
Wind and Lightning are his natural affinities, but he must modify conventional ninjutsu to accommodate his chakra flow 12 24 30.
- Wind Release: Great Breakthrough: Provides wind pressure and broad battlefield coverage. He also uses scattered chakra to interfere with Huru’s sensing 97 115.
- Lightning Release: Lightning Illusion Earth Flow: Spreads lightning across the ground to disrupt Ameyuri’s advance 169.
- Imitation Water Release: Righteous Piercing: Despite its name, his version combines a chakra blade with compressed Wind Release propulsion rather than relying on Water Release 109 115.
- Range: Righteous Piercing fills a gap in his arsenal by attacking distant targets 97 117.
- Limits: The projectile breaks apart against Afui’s lightning coating. Against a giant snake, he targets an eye because penetrating its scales is beyond his available attacks 119 146.
Overload Mode
Developed from Iris Moon’s proposed Taijutsu Mode, Overload exploits rather than suppresses Xue Ge’s diagonal chakra imbalance. Stimulation increases one side’s power while his prosthetics maintain balance until he releases it as explosive movement 53 60.
- Greatly increases movement speed and produces visible black mist 60 114.
- Can be regulated at lower intensity after he tests his physical limits 117.
- Originally causes bleeding and severe tissue damage when sustained 116.
- His later regenerative power extends its duration, but maximum speed can exceed what his eyesight can comfortably follow 116.
Dragon Vein Power and Regeneration
After the Rōran mission, Xue Ge experiences accelerated recovery and encounters a mysterious counterpart resembling himself. Muzi separately identifies an abnormal consciousness inside him 83 87 92.
- Regeneration offsets injuries accumulated during Overload 116 121.
- During an involuntary manifestation, purple chakra blocks Afui’s Nukite and forms arms capable of firing Righteous Piercing 120.
- In his inner consciousness, Xue Ge wrestles away a small white dragon; his control returns, but the regenerative energy disappears and accumulated damage immediately takes effect 121.
- The regenerative ability later returns 126.
- A purple dragon claims that Xue Ge’s body suits it and that the power within him is only one branch of its dispersed power 143.
Technical Knowledge and Limitations
- Chakra circulation: His missing left arm and right leg create an abnormal flow that easily disrupts ordinary ninjutsu 24.
- Genjutsu: Shows severe incompatibility with learning it and is caught by opponents’ illusions during academy tests 12 56.
- One-handed seals: Can cast adapted techniques with one hand 32 38.
- Shadow Clones: Uses clones for parallel training, battlefield deception, and watching over Karura’s experiments 63 115 133.
- Chakra Hand Blade: Learns a cutting chakra coating from Muzi’s notes, but does not establish that he can safely use it for surgery 107.
- Teaching: Applies his prior teaching experience to combat instruction; he has no intention of becoming a medical ninja 17 94 111.
