Background / History
Before arriving in Gotham, Qin Wei lived a sedentary working life, commuting by subway and returning to a cramped rented room. He was intelligent but habitually avoided effort and responsibility, preferring to complete assignments at the last possible moment. His father abused him while drunk; at seventeen, Qin Wei retaliated with a flying kick that hospitalized him for a week 4 12 34.
Qin Wei entered Gotham in an unfamiliar Western man's body. He emerged naked from a gutter beside a trash can, with no identification and a stitched stab wound passing through his waist. Although he retained memories of his own life, he did not know the body's identity or history 1.
His knowledge of DC came mainly from movies rather than comics. Seeking Batman's protection, he wandered through the East End asking about Bruce Wayne and was arrested. During questioning, he adopted the name “Will” and claimed his injury had caused memory loss. Gordon informed him that Bruce had died in Crime Alley alongside his parents 1.
The body's origin remains unresolved. Qin Wei experiences a fragmentary memory of being submerged in a large container while a voice urges him to understand, become, and surpass someone, then save Gotham's poor. He later wonders whether the body could belong to Bruce Wayne, but finds no supporting evidence and recoils from the possibility of inheriting Batman's responsibilities 11 19.
Appearance
Qin Wei's current body has a handsome Western face and an unusually developed physique 1 19.
- Hair: Dark brown, dry, and curling; often slicked back with styling products while dressed as a Roman gang member 1 2 21 37.
- Eyes: Gray, deep-set, and initially bloodshot 1.
- Complexion: Sickly pale during his early recovery, compared to a vampire's 1.
- Build: Tall and heavily muscled. His physique appears almost sculpted from granite when uncovered 19 47.
- Distinguishing injury: A stab wound through the waist, already crudely stitched when he first arrives 1.
- Usual clothing: A black suit associated with the Roman. He later buys a designer suit that becomes badly torn during his conflicts 2 21 43.
Personality
Qin Wei initially wants safety rather than status or heroism. He considers himself a gifted slacker, dislikes taking responsibility, and prefers following a team leader so that failures will not become his problem. Gotham repeatedly forces him into decisions where his own survival depends on rescuing others 12.
Fear does not prevent him from acting. He can hide under a pillow in despair, yet deliberately draw a Bioman away from Gordon and Selina moments later in his story. Selina comes to recognize that his bravery, cowardice, rationality, and recklessness are all genuine aspects of his personality 8 14 20.
His relationship with Oswald combines calculation with real loyalty. He hopes to hide behind Penguin's eventual power, but also regards Oswald as his best friend. Believing Oswald has been fatally injured, he challenges the armored bat-themed attacker despite knowing that remaining passive would be safer 21 40 42.
His compassion becomes more selective as he adapts to Gotham. Early on, he intervenes when an old man is beaten on a train; later, he walks past a similar attack rather than risk another confrontation. He nevertheless refuses to continue Dodge's drug business, which he personally loathes 3 21 35.
Over time, Qin Wei begins to enjoy Gotham's danger because it makes him feel alive. His ambition grows from a wish to escape coercion into a desire to prove that his previous life's limitations reflected a lack of opportunity, not a lack of ability 19 34.
Abilities & Skills
Predictive Comics
Mysterious superhero comics appear in Qin Wei's clothing and reveal events connected to his immediate future. They are his principal source of foreknowledge, not part of a confirmed quest or leveling system 2 20.
- Event previews: The first comic depicts Hugo Strange's casino attack, allowing Qin Wei to escape before the massacre 2 5.
- Developing pages: Additional pages appear after he escapes the casino, supplying information for the next danger 6.
- Decision warnings: Blank pages indicate a crucial choice. Qin Wei interprets a completely blank comic as a warning that his decision about meeting Harvey Dent could determine his survival 21.
- Replacement: After the first comic is ruined in the sewers, another appears in his jacket. He concludes that comics respawn around pivotal events 20.
- Restricted information: Foreknowledge does not automatically reveal practical answers, such as Hugo's hiding place. Qin Wei must work backward from predicted outcomes to identify usable clues 8.
- Changing events: Altering Dick Grayson's path produces an abnormal experience that Qin Wei interprets as resistance from the world's predetermined storyline 33 38.
Inherited Combat Instincts
The unfamiliar body possesses fighting instincts beyond Qin Wei's own experience. He first suspects this after instinctively evading an elderly man's exceptionally fast punch, then confirms it during the Lower District riot 30 39 41.
- Automatic technique: While blocking a knife attack, his body follows through with a correctly coordinated uppercut that incapacitates a Red Hood 39.
- Injury assessment: After the strike, his mind supplies a detailed assessment of the opponent's fractured jaw, concussion, and likely unconsciousness 39.
- Strength: He uses his greater body mass to pull the armored attacker toward him through a retracting grappling hook. Later, he climbs from a moving truck's cab using one arm 41 49.
- Limits: His conscious combat experience remains inadequate. The armored attacker exploits his mistakes, escapes his mount, and defeats him with a rear takedown 41.
- Vulnerability: Armor injures his bare fists and elbow; a Batarang wound prevents him from lifting his right arm. His right hand remains too weak to use during the later truck chase 41 49.
Strategy, Deception, and Improvisation
Qin Wei combines foreknowledge with quick thinking, bluffing, and improvised plans 7 8 15.
- Convincing lies: He maintains steady breathing, sincere eye contact, and an unhurried tone while deceiving Maroni and Selina 8.
- Fabricated identity: He recruits Selina by pretending to be a mob victim's son who infiltrated the Roman to oppose Falcone. This account is invented, not his actual background 8.
- Environmental tactics: He plans to use a charging Bioman's impact against a tethered corpse to pry open the sewer grate 14 15.
- Staged conflict: He and Oswald pretend to quarrel, reinforcing Maroni's belief that Qin Wei is greedy and becoming estranged from his partner 32 35.
- Operational caution: After taking a weapons truck, he anticipates a tracking device and arranges to transfer its cargo rather than simply keep the vehicle 48.
- Limits: His schemes do not eliminate fear or physical failure. During the sewer escape, his legs seize up and Bullock must complete much of the setup 15.
Language and Practical Knowledge
- Mandarin: Speaks with a Chinatown restaurant owner and explains how sharing the language can reduce distrust of outsiders 20.
- Chinese cuisine: Distinguishes food aimed at American customers from the dumplings he remembers from home 19 20.
- Limited DC knowledge: Recognizes major figures and uses Alfred Pennyworth's possible presence as an indirect lead concerning Bruce Wayne's survival 1 42.
- Poor driving: Takes the wheel during an emergency chase despite having little confidence beyond playing Need for Speed. Later, he hires Royce because he cannot reliably drive himself 17 43.
- Firearms inexperience: During his first use of a gun, he fears hitting an ally and does not know how to disengage the safety 48.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Predictive comics — Appear in his pockets and provide information about approaching pivotal events 2 20.
- Dodge Manor — Received from Maroni together with Dodge's businesses. Qin Wei dismisses the existing crew, closes the drug operation, and sells the estate 32 34 35 43.
- 1963 Ferrari GT — Selected from Dodge's garage; later traded to Victor as part of the payment for the Batmobile and equipment container 38 47.
- Batmobile — Wayne Enterprises' Multi-Terrain Bulletproof Armored Vehicle, purchased with a container of equipment for eight million dollars plus the Ferrari. It has two seats, heavy armor, 1,200 horsepower, and remote control 46 47.
- Wayne Enterprises equipment container — Purchased alongside the Batmobile. Inspected contents include a multifunction grappling belt, reinforced body armor, and a ballistic helmet 47.
- Shotgun — Carried during the weapons-truck operation, though his lack of firearms experience prevents him from confidently using it 48.
- Small dagger — Brought during the truck chase; ineffective against the Joker Gang's steel towing cables 49.
Relationships
- Oswald / Penguin — Recruiter, closest friend, and principal partner. Oswald frees him from detention and helps him adapt to gang life; Qin Wei later commits to helping him overthrow Maroni and rule Gotham's underworld 2 19.
- Selina Kyle / Catwoman — Ally and developing romantic interest. He recognizes her disguise, recruits her through a fabricated backstory, and grows closer to her over dinner in Chinatown 5 8 20.
- James Gordon — Initially his interrogator, later a trusted police contact. Gordon shelters him after the sewer ordeal, lends him money, and seeks his help identifying the bat-themed criminal 1 15 16 42.
- Harvey Bullock — Fellow sewer survivor. Bullock completes the escape mechanism when Qin Wei becomes physically incapacitated; Qin Wei later visits him in hospital 15 19.
- Harvey Dent — Ally against Maroni. Qin Wei recruits him after discovering Charlie's impersonation, but becomes uneasy about Harvey's willingness to bypass procedural justice 23 24 25.
- Dick Grayson — Prospective recruit whose fate Qin Wei tries to change. Dick initially blames him for his family's deaths; Qin Wei evaluates his potential through his ability to avenge them 26 32 33 37.
- Sal Maroni — Superior turned intended target. Maroni coerces Qin Wei by threatening Oswald, later grants him Dodge's assets, and attempts to divide the partners 7 32.
- Carmine Falcone — Dangerous crime boss whom Qin Wei approaches for leverage and resources. Falcone distrusts men who combine intelligence with courage, but later permits Qin Wei access to his black-market port 18 44.
- Royce Ben — Paid driver and operational ally during the weapons theft. Qin Wei uses money and a carefully maintained air of competence to secure his cooperation 43 45 48 49.
- Dr. Hugo Strange — Casino attacker whose stolen money Qin Wei is forced to recover. Hugo obtains a vial of Qin Wei's blood through Selina before leaving them with the money 7 17.
- Armored bat-themed attacker — Unidentified opponent whom Qin Wei calls a fake Batman. Their fight leaves Qin Wei hospitalized; afterward, he helps Gordon investigate the man's possible connection to Bruce Wayne 40 41 42.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Joining the Roman and Surviving the Casino
- Oswald breaks Qin Wei out of police detention and recruits him into the Roman. For three months, he collects rent, guards establishments, and adjusts to gang life 2.
- A comic warns him of Hugo Strange's casino attack. Rather than abandon Oswald, he works with Selina to remove his unconscious friend before the Biomen slaughter everyone remaining inside 2 5.
- Maroni demands the recovery of five million dollars within three days and threatens Oswald's life to prevent Qin Wei from fleeing 7 8.
Sewer Ordeal and Break with Maroni
- Qin Wei joins Selina's search for Hugo, eventually becoming trapped with Gordon and Bullock at the sewer outfall 8 11 12.
- His improvised grate-breaking plan succeeds with Bullock's help. The escape carries him into the sea, where Selina struggles to keep him afloat before a bat-shaped aircraft arrives 15.
- After waking at Gordon's house, he unsuccessfully searches Wayne Manor for Batman. Selina subsequently secures the money from Hugo in exchange for Qin Wei's blood 16 17.
- Maroni's killers pursue Qin Wei and Oswald as they take the money to Falcone. Following another near-fatal confrontation, Qin Wei resolves to build their own power rather than remain either boss's expendable subordinate 17 18 19.
The False Harvey Dent
- Qin Wei agrees to meet the real Harvey despite the risk of being seen cooperating with the prosecutor 21.
- He restrains Charlie, a man posing as Harvey for Maroni, and Oswald kills the impostor. A recording device on the body threatens to expose them 23.
- Qin Wei recruits the real Harvey into their counter-scheme. Harvey wears Charlie's clothes and communicates with Maroni under the dead man's identity, eventually taking risks beyond Qin Wei's original plan 24.
Dick Grayson and the Changed Storyline
- A comic depicting Robin's origin warns Qin Wei that he and Oswald may become the gangsters responsible for Dick's tragedy. Qin Wei attempts to settle the circus's rent peacefully 26 27.
- Baron's arrival turns the collection into a massacre. Qin Wei later funds Dick's treatment and considers recruiting him rather than allowing his development to follow the familiar Robin storyline 27 28 33.
- When Qin Wei declines to stop Dick's pursuit of revenge, he experiences an apparent disturbance in the world's storyline. A voice in his head urges him to overturn the worldline so they can meet 33.
- Qin Wei later connects the escalating Lower District violence to the consequences of changing Dick's fate 38.
Manor Sale and the Bat-Themed Attacker
- Maroni gives Qin Wei Dodge Manor and instructs him to mislead Falcone. Qin Wei uses staged hostility toward Oswald to preserve the deception 32 35.
- Qin Wei removes Dodge's crew and sells the estate, anticipating that Maroni's eventual prosecution would lead to its seizure as an illegal asset 34 35.
- During the Lower District riot, his body's combat instincts emerge. He then fights the armored bat-themed attacker and loses after more than ten minutes of close combat 39 40 41.
- Despite severe hand, elbow, and back injuries, he leaves hospital to accelerate his plans. He also suggests that Gordon search for Alfred Pennyworth 42.
Preparing for the Bank-Robbery Node Event
- A new comic depicts a forty-five-million-dollar robbery at Gotham Central Bank. Qin Wei notices green hair beneath one robber's hood and suspects Joker's involvement 31.
- With ten million dollars received as the manor's down payment, he hires Royce and seeks weapons at Falcone's port 43 44.
- After purchasing the Batmobile and equipment, Qin Wei and Royce disguise themselves as beggars and board a truck carrying the reserved weapons 47.
- They seize the shipment and arrange to transfer it near Wayne Manor, but the Joker Gang pursues them. Qin Wei climbs onto the moving truck to deal with hooked steel cables while protecting the explosive cargo from a potentially fatal exchange of gunfire 48 49.
