Background / History

Childhood and revenge against Falcone

Selina grew up scraping by in Gotham’s slums. Her father, Falcone, abandoned her and her mother, leaving Selina determined to destroy his criminal empire in revenge for her deceased mother. She kept this motivation secret—even Holly had not heard it when Qin Wei correctly identified her grievance 8 14 20.

As Catwoman, she moved between Gotham’s wealthy social circles and its criminal shadows, stealing valuables and using her beauty to influence others. Her usual contacts included wealthy businessmen and political figures 5 20.

Casino massacre and partnership

Selina infiltrated Maroni’s casino disguised as a waitress, then posed as a woman sent by Maroni to explain her presence in a restricted room. A booby-trapped telephone shocked Oswald, but Qin Wei recognized her as Catwoman when she changed into her leather outfit. After helping lower the unconscious Oswald out of a window, she confronted Qin Wei about his knowledge of her identity. Dr. Hugo’s arrival interrupted their confrontation, and Qin Wei fled with both of them before the Biomen massacred everyone remaining inside 5.

Selina later entered Qin Wei’s fifth-floor room to demand answers. He won her cooperation by claiming that his family had been destroyed by the mob and that he also intended to bring down Falcone. This background was fabricated, but Selina believed it. She agreed to help recover the five million dollars Maroni had ordered him to retrieve, accompanying him into the sewers despite the danger 8.

Sewer expedition and rescue

In the sewers, Selina overpowered Gordon when he attempted to arrest her, took him hostage with her whip, and confiscated his gun and handcuffs. Qin Wei persuaded her and the detectives to cooperate. When he proposed following the drainage current out to sea, Selina instead stayed behind to seek another route, accepting his flashlight 9 10.

Concerned that the group was being driven into a trap—and that she had left Gordon unarmed—Selina doubled back. She drove two Biomen away at gunpoint, but Hugo disabled their emotions, removing their fear of firearms. Selina then returned Gordon’s gun and used her whip and agility to buy Qin Wei time. A calf cramp and twisted ankle left her exposed, and Gordon saved her by firing three shots into a Bioman’s eye wound 13 14.

Her whip and the confiscated handcuffs became components of Qin Wei’s escape plan. After the group escaped through the outlet, Selina pulled Qin Wei above the seawater and tried to keep him afloat. Cold and exhaustion eventually overwhelmed her; a bat-shaped aircraft arrived as they sank and rescued them 14 15 21.

Hugo’s money and blood sample

Selina subsequently deduced that Hugo’s laboratory should be on the third sewer level: the lower level was unsafe around the roaming Bioman, while the upper levels were too easily discovered. She went there intending to steal the money, but Hugo was waiting 16.

She returned to Qin Wei with nine checks worth $4.5 million, which completed the stolen five-million-dollar sum when combined with money Hugo had already returned. When Hugo appeared, Selina unexpectedly pierced Qin Wei’s neck with a syringe and handed over a sample of his blood. She apologized for concealing the arrangement, explaining that she feared Qin Wei would refuse. He reassured her and accepted the recovered money 16 17.

Selina also supported Oswald’s proposal to blame Maroni before Falcone, reasoning that driving the two mob leaders apart would weaken the Roman Empire 17.

Friendship with Qin Wei

After the immediate crisis, Qin Wei found Selina teaching at a yoga studio in the Fashion District. She invited him to dinner, and they rode her Ducati to Chinatown.
