Background / History

Bruce witnessed Thomas and Martha Wayne being shot in Crime Alley. Their deaths remained a recurring nightmare more than a decade later and became the starting point of his life as Batman. He swore at their graves to protect Gotham and make the city better, even at the cost of everything he possessed 64 88 132.

Alfred had intended to resign from Thomas Wayne’s service, but stayed because he could not abandon the orphaned Bruce. He raised Bruce and continued supporting him after he became Batman, believing both Gotham and Bruce still needed him 23.

As Batman, Bruce developed an extensive surveillance network, criminal database, and collection of contingency plans. Alongside his nightly patrols, he maintained a public life as a wealthy playboy and the head of Wayne Enterprises 13 14 16.

Appearance

  • Original appearance: A burly man with a sharply defined jaw, pale cleft chin, and visible stubble beneath his cowl. His exposed face during Bane’s broadcast has deep blue eyes 12 76.
  • Costume: Black suit or metallic Bat-Armor, a pointed-eared cowl, flowing black cape, and bat emblem. His cowl leaves his lower face exposed 12 77 87.
  • Titan-enhanced form: Enlarged muscles, blood-red eyes, and a torn suit; further swelling eventually splits his armor 103 105.
  • Batwoman form: A slender, curvaceous woman with fair skin, glossy black hair, and blue eyes. Later appearances retain the black cowl and Bat-Armor, with a visibly pregnant abdomen 105 106 109 133.

Personality

Bruce is intensely committed to Gotham and often treats its protection as his personal responsibility. He refuses Superman’s assistance during the Crime Syndicate crisis, insisting that Gotham’s criminals are his concern rather than the Justice League’s. His determination also leads him to fight despite severe injuries and Alfred’s warnings 87 102.

He favors investigation, preparation, and contingency planning, but Lynn repeatedly exposes the limits of his control. Bruce studies Lynn’s equipment, commissions countermeasures, and upgrades his vehicle after failed pursuits. He nevertheless struggles against abilities that bypass ordinary technology, including Lynn’s untraceable calls and identity-swapping card 2 15 18 43 68.

His attachment to family can override tactical judgment. He holds back against the brainwashed Dick, grieves openly when Alfred appears to die, and hesitates to escape Lynn’s captivity because doing so might cost Jason the promised resurrection of his parents 18 23 85.

Bruce generally seeks to apprehend criminals and bring them to justice. Lynn challenges this approach by blaming repeated prison escapes for further deaths, leaving Bruce unable to answer. His later nuclear contingency against Bane shows how extreme his preparations can become when he believes Gotham faces collapse 13 72 74.

  • Lynn’s “Batman's Communicator” bypasses blocked numbers and more than ten changes to Bruce’s contact number, provided a communication device is nearby 68.
  • Bruce identifies the sexual images used to blackmail him as edited photographs and eventually destroys them, though Lynn retains other leverage 68.
