Background / History
The massacre and Shinji’s recreated encounter
After the Uchiha massacre, Sasuke lives alone in the clan’s largely deserted compound. Even at home, he divides his attention between studying and practising hand seals 197.
During an Instance recreating the massacre, Shinji protects Sasuke and challenges Itachi over the forces behind the clan’s destruction. Itachi repeatedly subjects Sasuke to genjutsu, while Shinji forcibly awakens him with Cursed Speech. Sasuke later experiences these events as dreams and becomes convinced that Shinji actually confronted and defeated Itachi five years earlier 199 200 216.
Sasuke pursues Shinji for answers, remaining outside his lodging despite hunger, cold, and being kicked into a lake. His insistence on learning why Itachi killed the clan produces enough emotional strain to advance his Sharingan to two tomoe, but he collapses before hearing Shinji’s explanation 217 218.
Seeking a way out of Konoha
Suspecting the truth behind the massacre destroys Sasuke’s trust in Konoha. He decides that leaving for an organisation capable of accelerating his growth is safer than remaining in the village and eventually acting on his anger. Shinji’s apparent victory over Itachi makes the Jashin Cult his preferred destination 224.
Hidan and Tobi subject him to a dangerous test that leaves him badly injured. Shinji subsequently offers him a chance to join the cult and help awaken his Three-Tomoe Sharingan if he takes first place in the Chunin Ninja Exams. Sasuke insists on entering despite his condition, and Kakashi agrees while reserving the right to withdraw him 225 226.
Chunin Ninja Exams
Sasuke enters the exams with Naruto and Sakura. Although frustrated with their behaviour, he recognises that later stages may require teamwork. He and Naruto defeat three Amegakure examinees and take their Earth Scroll before Orochimaru intercepts Team 7 233 235.
Orochimaru overwhelms Sasuke, recognises Kakashi’s Chidori, and identifies him as a desirable reincarnation vessel. Shinji’s intervention saves Sasuke and convinces him that following Shinji offers the fastest route to surpassing Itachi 235 237.
The exams are eventually suspended, preventing Sasuke from completing the first-place condition. Shinji nevertheless ends his assessment and uses the Sharingan Wraith Soul to grant him the Three-Tomoe Sharingan 251.
Leaving with the Jashin Cult
Sasuke leaves a letter telling Team 7 that the exams exposed his shortcomings and that he is departing to train. Naruto, Sakura, and their classmates pursue him, believing Shinji has misled him. They find Sasuke wearing the Jashin Cult’s uniform and carrying the Kusanagi Sword 252 253.
Sasuke defeats the pursuing young ninja with his Sharingan and Chidori, deliberately avoiding lethal injuries. Naruto’s escalating Nine-Tails transformation reverses the advantage, forcing Shinji to intervene before their fight becomes fatal 254.
Travelling with Shinji does not immediately close the gap between Sasuke and stronger opponents. Itachi defeats him with basic techniques and Tsukuyomi, leaving him unconscious for several days. Later encounters include a Kumogakure ambush, a shadow-user whom Sasuke escapes by driving Chidori through his own abdomen, and another shadow ambush from which Tamamo Hotaru and Bright Moon rescue him 260 271 276 287 305.
Training and growing independence
After more than three months away from Konoha, Shinji uses the Sharingan Wraith Soul again to evolve Sasuke’s eyes into the Mangekyō Sharingan. He explains that each eye contains a distinct technique and that further development can unlock Susanoo 324 325 326.
Shinji guides Sasuke’s development through sparring and dangerous real combat rather than teaching him a catalogue of ninjutsu. Sasuke independently develops Chidori variants, masters Amaterasu, and eventually manifests Susanoo. When he later spars with Kakashi, his former teacher notices that his attacks have become direct, lethal, and seasoned by life-or-death experience 343 371 398 448 449.
Itachi’s final battle
Shinji brings Sasuke to a meeting arranged by Itachi. Sasuke is initially unprepared and knows that he is still weaker than his brother. Their confrontation begins as a genjutsu duel; the borrowed Sharingan Wraith Soul reflects Tsukuyomi, but Itachi continues to exploit Sasuke’s assumptions and emotional reactions in physical combat 494 495 497.
Sasuke wounds Itachi, engineers a surprise remote sword attack, and clashes with him using Half-Body Susanoo. Itachi’s armoured Susanoo decisively overpowers his own. Under pressure, Sasuke unlocks Kagutsuchi and combines black flames with Susanoo, but his final arrow is blocked by the Yata Mirror 497 498 499 500.
Itachi dies before him, leaving Sasuke unable to feel the satisfaction he expected from revenge. Shinji then reveals the massacre’s circumstances and explains that Itachi’s threats against Konoha’s leadership were what kept Sasuke alive. Sasuke initially vows revenge on the entire village, but Shinji persuades him to target the responsible leaders rather than innocent people 500 501.
Revenge against Konoha’s leadership
After initially hesitating, Sasuke receives Itachi’s eyes through a transplant performed by Kabuto. With the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and greatly increased power, he returns to Konoha under the pretence of visiting. He houses Shinji’s group in the Uchiha Compound while gathering information 501 505 509 510.
During the attack on Konoha, Sasuke separates from his former classmates to pursue his targets. Koharu and Homura defend the massacre and express regret only that Sasuke was spared; he breaks their limbs and burns them alive with Amaterasu. He then confronts Danzō and ultimately confirms that he has killed him as well 511 513 517 526.
Sasuke delivers the final sword strike to Hiruzen Sarutobi, demanding justice for Itachi and the clan. Having personally killed the senior leaders he blamed, he considers most of his hatred vented and intends to begin a new life. Naruto attempts to stop him, but Shinji interrupts their renewed fight. Konoha subsequently lists Sasuke as an S-rank Missing-nin 526 527 528 531.
Appearance
- Jashin Cult uniform: Wears the organisation’s clothing when confronted by the group attempting to retrieve him 253.
- Konoha forehead protector: Retains it after leaving and uses it to enter Konoha before his revenge mission 509.
- Stubbly head: Seen after the card-game arc in which his hair is wagered 271 284.
- Purple Susanoo: His ocular construct initially appears as an upper-body skeleton, later developing flesh 398 450.
Personality
Sasuke is intensely persistent, particularly when pursuing the truth about Itachi. Refusal, humiliation, and physical hardship strengthen rather than weaken his determination. His confrontation with Shinji also shows an analytical side: he notices that Shinji knows his name despite claiming they have never met and challenges the explanation offered 217 218.
His desire for strength combines genuine diligence with pride. He practises outside missions, develops his own techniques, and enjoys displaying his progress. Before Itachi’s death, much of his aloofness is consciously cultivated to appear cool; during his spar with Kakashi, he privately wants his former teacher’s approval 197 343 449 501.
Repeated defeats expose the limits of his confidence, but Shinji’s influence also encourages a more aggressive disregard for authority. By their later travels, Sasuke readily attacks an abusive official and treats weak guards as uninteresting opponents 225 260 286.
Learning Itachi’s true motives makes his withdrawal more genuine and his grief more severe. Although he initially contemplates destroying Konoha indiscriminately, he accepts Shinji’s distinction between the responsible leadership and innocent villagers. Completing his revenge leaves him more interested in living independently than in continuing to fight 501 527.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Sasuke’s inherited ocular abilities are central to his combat development 251 326.
- The Three-Tomoe Sharingan helps him control Chidori and overwhelm his former classmates 254.
- He can engage Itachi in a genjutsu confrontation, but remains inferior to his brother’s deception and timing 495 497.
- Repeated Mangekyō use damages his eyesight before the transplant 344 499.
- The Eternal Mangekyō removes the danger of blindness, but does not remove chakra exhaustion or the strain of prolonged combat 505 520.
- Shinji identifies the Rinnegan as a possible further evolution, while stressing that hard work alone cannot achieve it. Sasuke has not obtained it in the documented events 530.
Amaterasu
The technique in Sasuke’s left Mangekyō produces black flames 343.
- Burns a large rock during training and kills Qian Chun despite his Steel Release 343 347.
- Later kills Jushi, Shuiguang, Koharu, and Homura 421 513.
- Can be used on a larger scale after his Eternal Mangekyō upgrade 506.
- Does not instantly bypass every defence: Itachi’s Susanoo initially keeps the flames from reaching him 499.
Blaze Release: Kagutsuchi
His right eye controls and strengthens black flames 499.
- Reshapes flames into protective coverings, a bow, and spikes 499 519.
- Can manipulate flames released by Itachi, not only Sasuke’s own Amaterasu 499.
- Increases the flames’ destructive power enough to make Itachi’s Susanoo begin melting 499.
Susanoo
Sasuke manifests a purple chakra construct for defence and powerful physical attacks 398 449.
- Its first skeletal form shields him from repeated explosions 398.
- Its half-body form resists Kakashi’s Lightning Blade, which only partially penetrates 449.
- Can be combined with Kagutsuchi and a black-flame bow 499.
- Remains vulnerable to superior abilities: Kamui cuts through it, Itachi’s stronger Susanoo shatters it, and Danzō damages or penetrates it 450 499 519 520.
- Extended use alongside Amaterasu can bring him close to exhaustion even after obtaining Eternal Mangekyō 520.
Lightning Release and Chidori Variants
Kakashi teaches Sasuke Chidori; Sasuke develops additional forms through experimentation 235 343 371.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Chidori | Concentrated lightning attack used in close combat; powerful enough to rapidly disperse Naruto’s Shadow Clones 254. |
| Chidori Blade | Channels lightning through the Kusanagi Sword, increasing lethality and paralysing pierced opponents 343. |
| Chidori Senbon | Releases a dense barrage of lightning needles; used after manoeuvring an opponent into the air 343. |
| Chidori Sharp Spear | A no-hand-seal ranged variant. Less powerful than Chidori, but longer-ranged, more sudden, and more flexible 371 498. |
Fire Release
- Great Fireball Technique: Used against examinees, shadow-based enemies, Itachi, and Danzō 235 287 498 520.
- Dragon Fire Technique: Sets trees ablaze when Sasuke senses someone watching Team 7 235.
Taijutsu, Weapons, and Tactics
Sasuke’s close-combat style develops from his childhood Uchiha foundation into a lethal variant shaped by real battles 497.
- Uses wired kunai and shuriken, concealed blades, and explosive tags to create layered attacks 225.
- Prioritises Shikamaru during the retrieval battle to prevent Shadow Imitation from deciding the fight 254.
- Combines sword extension, positioning, and Chidori Senbon to trap opponents 343.
- Uses apparent straightforward attacks as distractions for a remotely controlled Kusanagi strike 498.
- Despite rapid improvement, remains vulnerable to experienced opponents exploiting his excitement or assumptions 497.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword / Kusanagi Sword – Curse — His primary weapon. Shinji upgrades it into a cursed tool with Indestructible, Sword of the Sky, Eight Hundred Uncollected, Lightning Release Enhancement, and Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique properties 325 327.
- Sharingan Wraith Soul — Shinji’s item, used to evolve Sasuke’s eyes and later lent to him for the final confrontation with Itachi. It reflects Tsukuyomi and could absorb incoming Amaterasu; these protections are properties of the item, not Sasuke’s innate abilities 251 325 495 497 499.
- Ninja tools — Kunai, shuriken, transparent wire, and explosive tags 225.
- Konoha forehead protector — Retained after his departure and used during his return to the village 509.
Relationships

- Itachi Uchiha — Older brother and original revenge target. Itachi secretly protects him and intends to leave him stronger; learning this after his death transforms Sasuke’s hatred into grief and redirects his revenge toward Konoha’s leaders 259 500 501.
- Kakashi Hatake — Former teacher who teaches him Chidori. Sasuke retains respect for him after leaving Konoha and wants him to recognise his growth 235 448 449.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Former teammate and persistent rival who repeatedly tries to bring him back. Their clashes escalate through Naruto’s Nine-Tails transformations and later resume after Hiruzen’s death 254 371 372 527.
- Sakura — Former teammate who worries about his injuries and joins the retrieval attempt. Sasuke rejects her pleas and knocks her unconscious when leaving 226 252 254.
- Hidan — Cult companion whose dangerous test badly injures Sasuke. Later defeats him in a card game with his hair at stake 225 226 271.
- Tobi — Cult companion who views Sasuke as a potential means of making reconciliation between Konoha and the Jashin Cult impossible 271.
- Tamamo Hotaru and Bright Moon — Travelling companions who protect him when a shadow ambush temporarily blinds him 305.
- Ino — Former classmate who recognises him after his return and organises a welcome meal that he reluctantly agrees to attend 510.
- Konoha High Command — Targets of his revenge for the massacre. He kills Koharu, Homura, Danzō, and Hiruzen 513 526 527.

Trivia
- Shinji and Hidan previously use Naruto and Sasuke’s names as false identities. The deception later causes confusion when a black-robed man meets the real boys 85 180.
- Sasuke’s repeated collapses after encounters with Shinji become a running observation: by the Three-Tomoe evolution, Shinji counts three such incidents 251.
- He is exceptionally popular with girls at the Ninja Academy and regards admiring attention as routine 284.
- After receiving the upgraded Kusanagi Sword, he becomes so attached to it that he sleeps holding it 327.
