First Appearance Chapter 112, “Not Obito, but Tobi”

Background / History

During the Shinobi World War, Iwagakure ninja nearly wiped out Obito’s squad. Kakashi lost an eye, while Obito was buried beneath a massive boulder. Although he survived, Obito retained a deep hatred of Iwagakure and later treated an attack on the village as an opportunity for revenge 424 425.

Rin became the central emotional wound beneath his masked identities. An enemy impersonating her provoked immediate lethal retaliation, while a jujutsu exploiting his unresolved anguish left him unwilling to return to reality 135 137.

Before joining Shinji’s group, Obito had already worked to weaken the Five Great Nations and nearly brought Kirigakure to ruin. He was also present on the night of the Uchiha massacre and understood Sasuke’s importance to Itachi, knowledge he later used to cultivate Sasuke as a contingency against Konoha 157 224.

His larger objective is to gather the Tailed Beasts’ chakra and revive the Ten-Tails, which he presents as a means of creating a world without pain or war. His understanding draws on the stone tablet beneath the Uchiha Ancestral Hall, whose contents Black Zetsu has altered without his knowledge 534 535.

Appearance

  • Mask: Usually conceals his face behind a one-eyed mask, occasionally lifting its lower edge to eat or perform Fire Release 124 138 346.
  • Disguise changes: Adopts a patterned replacement mask with two apparent eyeholes, one of which is actually painted on, before spending time in Konoha 203.
  • Clothing and hair: Wears a long robe and has short hair. Deidara recognizes this combination despite a change of mask 531.
  • Visible eye: Possesses a Sharingan capable of activating the Mangekyō Sharingan 135 148.

Personality

Tobi performs an exaggeratedly timid, foolish persona: he screams for help during attacks that cannot hurt him, pretends to die, flatters his “seniors,” and supplies implausible excuses for disappearing. His repeated claim that he became lost while relieving himself eventually prompts Shinji to demand a different excuse 124 406 452.

Beneath the performance, Obito is calculating, observant, and willing to exploit personal hatred or diplomatic crises. He analyzes Shinji’s unfamiliar abilities, hides his own strength, and abandons opportunities when they threaten his cover. He considers both killing Mei Terumi and capturing Naruto, but decides neither opportunity justifies exposing himself 129 130 157 377.

His attachment to Rin can overwhelm that caution. After Spider Woman exploits her memory, he reveals Wood Release and inflicts repeated illusory deaths on the cursed spirit, disregarding the risk to his identity 135 138.

His companionship with the cult is not entirely an act. Being protected by Shinji, Hidan, and Hozuki Mangetsu begins to ease his emotional isolation. Shinji later suspects that Obito genuinely enjoys being Tobi, even while Obito continues plotting to force the cult into alignment with Akatsuki 137 218 271.

Abilities & Skills

Kamui

  • Intangibility: Allows physical attacks and ninjutsu to pass through him. Demonstrated against Spider Woman’s threads, sword strikes, Earth Release, and Ōnoki’s Dust Release 124 135 278 426.
  • Space-time transfer: Lets him vanish, reposition, and move people or objects into the Kamui Dimension 123 135 139.
  • Escape: Shinji considers him the group’s best survivor; even barriers do not prevent him from escaping through his dimension 149.
  • Rescue and storage: Saves Hidan’s dismembered body, transports rescued captives, disposes of corpses, and stores weapons and food 129 139 202 213 455.
  • Team attacks: His intangible body can conceal an ally’s attack. Sasuke uses Chidori through him to kill an opponent who does not understand the ability 278.
  • Secrecy: Initially mixes truth and lies when explaining the technique, and refuses to transport his companions when doing so would reveal the dimension’s interior 125 139.

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

  • Illusion combat: Uses his Mangekyō Sharingan to contest Spider Woman’s jujutsu, drawing both of them into an illusion space where she experiences repeated deaths 138.
  • Visual limitation: His Sharingan cannot see through the supernatural mist surrounding the mountain encounter 148.
  • Emotional vulnerability: Possessing the Mangekyō does not prevent Spider Woman from trapping him in anguish over Rin; his companions must intervene 135 137.

Wood Release

  • Lethal close-range attacks: Tears apart an impostor taking Rin’s appearance 135.
  • Wood Release: Hellish Rampage: Produces spiraling, thorn-covered trees that seize and crush Spider Woman 138.
  • Wood Release: Cutting Technique: Kills Iwagakure ninja with wooden growths, including an attack erupting inside a patrolman’s body 424 425.
  • Concealed strength: Usually hides this ability; revealing it shocks both Hidan and Hozuki Mangetsu 138.

Fire Release

  • Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance: Combines a massive serpent of flame with a gale created by Kamui’s spatial distortion. Burns away spider silk across almost half an underground battlefield 138.
  • Area clearing: Destroys one-third of a wave of Man-Eating Flowers with a single Fire Release technique during the Guard Athena challenge 404.

Infiltration and Deception

  • Acting: Maintains Tobi’s comic persona while conducting covert operations, and helps Shinji stage a death-and-resurrection spectacle that deceives Kirigakure’s onlookers 179 512.
  • Sleight of hand: Steals Hidan’s Jashin necklace without being noticed, demonstrating that his apparent helplessness is false 112.
  • Tracking: Quickly locates Orochimaru despite misleading footprints and another change of appearance 123.
  • Information gathering: Coaxes details about the Jashin Cult’s immortality ritual from Hidan 274.
  • Provocation: Engineers clashes with Kumogakure and distorts his account of the Iwagakure ransom mission to encourage hostility toward the cult 276 282 428.

Tactical Assessment

  • Cursed Speech: Recognizes Shinji’s commands as a potential threat to Kamui and considers destroying his own hearing as a defense. The narration establishes that deafness would only weaken the curse, not nullify it 129 130.
  • Risk management: Avoids attempting Naruto’s capture while Jiraiya is nearby because success is uncertain and his identity could be exposed 377.
  • Threat recognition: Suspects that Shinji’s Hollow Technique: Purple could affect space and bypass Kamui; this remains his intuition rather than a tested result 417.

Equipment / Items

  • Masks and robe: Maintain his anonymity and distinguish his public personas. Changing masks does not stop Deidara from recognizing his association with Shinji 203 531.
  • Kunai: Uses one to collect the Fishman Cursed Spirit’s blood for Hidan’s ritual 124.
  • Black Receiver spike: Drives a long spike through Spider Woman’s neck after phasing through her defenses 135.
  • Jashin Cult contract mark: Appears on his hand after he signs the contract with his real name. Later helps him and Shinji identify one another among impostors 114 150.
  • Sharingan Wraith Soul: Entrusted to him by Shinji; immediately radiates intense negative emotions when he holds it. He later returns it reluctantly, with no documented enhancement to his own powers 410 493.
  • Three-Tails chakra egg: Receives the extracted chakra from Shinji for the Ten-Tails revival plan 535.

Relationships

  • Akagi Shinji — His recruiter, senior, companion, and covert target of investigation. Obito initially seeks the secret of human–cursed spirit fusion, but Shinji’s protection creates genuine attachment. Their relationship eventually becomes open cooperation over the Ten-Tails, though Shinji insists on treating him as Tobi 137 157 534 535.
  • Hidan — A companion and constant target of teasing. Their chases and fights coexist with loyalty: Obito saves his dismembered body, while Hidan helps protect him from Spider Woman and promises revenge after his misleading account of Iwagakure’s treatment 137 202 428.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — A prospective pawn against Konoha. Obito arranges his initiation assessment and fetches Shinji when Hidan goes too far; he later cooperates with Sasuke in battle 224 225 278.
  • Rin — The focus of his unresolved grief. Impersonating her or exploiting her memory provokes exceptional rage 135 137 138.
  • Kakashi — A former squadmate toward whom he harbors a desire for revenge. Watching Shinji humiliate Kakashi leaves him satisfied and thinking that his revenge has only begun 424 452.
  • Hozuki Mangetsu — Helps defend him while Shinji breaks Spider Woman’s jujutsu; subsequently witnesses his concealed Wood Release 137 138.
  • Nagato / Pain — Central to Akatsuki’s operations, but not always under Obito’s control. Nagato’s unannounced attack on Konoha frustrates him; after Nagato’s death, Obito attempts to assume leadership 512 531.
  • Black Zetsu — Supports his claim to be Madara before Akatsuki. Obito remains unaware that Zetsu has tampered with the Uchiha tablet 532 535.
  • Kisame — Believes he is Madara and supports his claim to Akatsuki leadership 531 532.
  • Tamamo Hotaru — Becomes an obstacle to his plans when she argues against killing Kurotsuchi. He considers murdering her but decides preserving his cover matters more 428.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Joining the Jashin Cult

Obito introduces himself as Tobi after toying with Hidan aboard a ship. Claiming to admire Jashin, he produces Hidan’s stolen necklace and asks to join. The recruitment contract initially threatens his disguise because it requires his real name; Shinji gives him privacy to sign, and the resulting mark confirms his admission 112 113 114.

He travels with Shinji and Hidan through the Land of Waves and Land of Water. Against the crowned Fishman Cursed Spirit, he collects blood and distracts the enemy long enough for Hidan to complete his fatal ritual 114 124.

Spider Woman and the First Emotional Breakthrough

An impostor appearing as Rin brings Obito’s hidden rage to the surface. Spider Woman subsequently traps him in a jujutsu built around his anguish, leaving him exposed despite his exceptional escape abilities 135 137.

Shinji frees him using amplified Cursed Speech while Hidan and Mangetsu defend them. Realizing that the others stayed to protect him begins a small emotional recovery. Obito retaliates with Fire Release, Wood Release, and Mangekyō illusions, then transports rescued captives to safety before leaving alone 137 138 139.

Maneuvering the Cult Against the Great Nations

Obito initially considers using his Tobi identity to arrange an alliance between Akatsuki and the Jashin Cult. As Shinji’s influence grows, he instead plots to make the cult the Shinobi World’s common enemy, leaving it little choice but to cooperate with Akatsuki 157 271.

Sasuke’s hatred of Konoha becomes one route toward that outcome. Obito also engineers encounters involving Kumogakure pursuers and secretly releases a mouse carrying a message to Kumogakure ninja 224 276 282.

The Iwagakure Ransom Mission

Sent to deliver a ransom demand for Kurotsuchi, Obito uses the visit to indulge his hatred of Iwagakure. He kills village ninja, taunts Kitsuchi and Ōnoki, and evades their attacks through Kamui 424 425 426.

He returns with a distorted story portraying himself as an abused messenger. His desired outcome is Kurotsuchi’s execution and an irreparable conflict between Iwagakure and the cult, but Tamamo Hotaru’s intervention obstructs that plan 428.

Konoha and the Akatsuki Leadership Claim

During Pain’s attack on Konoha, Tobi accompanies Shinji, Hidan, and Sasuke in a plan to kill Hiruzen Sarutobi, Shimura Danzō, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura. Nagato’s arrival is an unwelcome surprise to him rather than a coordinated operation 512.

After Nagato’s death, Obito summons Akatsuki and declares himself its true leader under the name Madara Uchiha. Deidara and Sasori recognize him as Shinji’s masked companion; Black Zetsu and Kisame support his claim, but the others remain uncertain 531 532 534.

Revealing His Objective to Shinji

Seeking the Three-Tails, Tobi admits his Akatsuki connection. Shinji rejects his claim to be Madara and forces him to acknowledge his Uchiha origins, then surprises him by correctly identifying the Ten-Tails revival plan 534.

Shinji gives him the Three-Tails chakra egg and proposes obtaining the half of the Nine-Tails sealed inside Minato rather than targeting Naruto directly. Obito agrees. He later takes the immobilized Minato away to extract that chakra, with instructions to return him afterward 535 538.
