The following milestones concern Xia Xi’s development as the title’s holder, rather than separate ranks within the Dawn Hashira position.

Position and Authority

Hashira embody both the Corps’ highest combat standard and its authority to deploy swordsmen. Their positions also carry unusually dangerous assignments and a history of frequent casualties 68.

History

Northern Region Reforms

Xia Xi’s training was already known in Tokyo as “Hell Wednesday.” He explained that his team-combat exercises were intended to reduce Corps casualties, a purpose Sabito correctly identified 162.

The Northern Region became a testing ground for a new management model and coordinated squad tactics, including the Seventh Squad system. Reports of lower-ranked swordsmen succeeding against a Lower Rank convinced Kagaya Ubuyashiki that these reforms were producing results 167 170.

Training at Kūmachiza eventually expanded from Wednesdays to full-day sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The increased activity also raised food and equipment expenses, which Yukishiro Seiko brought to Xia Xi’s attention 207.

Swordsmith Village

Xia Xi visited the Swordsmith Village after learning that shortages prevented it from supplying his requested Crimson Red Iron Sand. He sought repairs, stronger weapons, and new equipment for the swordsmen under his instruction 217.

He helped secure a new ore vein that eased the Corps’ blade shortage, earning Ubuyashiki’s praise. During the visit, he also challenged Shinjuro Rengoku’s despair over Yoriichi’s unmatched strength, emphasizing the lives ordinary demon slayers could still save 228 230.

Shinjuro subsequently mastered the Bright Red Nichirin Blade and pledged to support Xia Xi in leading the Corps toward victory 234.

Upper Rank Victories

Against Hantengu, Xia Xi remained behind to fight Zohakuten while Kazetoriin and Shinobu pursued the demon’s real body. Ubuyashiki later publicly credited the Dawn Hashira with slaying Upper Rank Four, presenting the victory as proof that Upper Ranks could be killed 255 267.

His subsequent encounter with Kokushibo exposed a much greater gap in strength. Dawn Breathing and True Total Concentration kept him in the fight, but Kokushibo’s transformed body and fusion of Moon Breathing with Blood Demon Art overwhelmed his defenses 392 396. Xia Xi nevertheless rejected the offer to become a demon 401.

By his encounter with Doma, Xia Xi’s unenhanced attributes exceeded those of Upper Rank Two. Muzan ultimately killed Doma to silence him; Xia Xi then destroyed the remaining body and received the system’s Upper Rank Two slaying reward 475 479.

Preparations and Final Battle

Xia Xi’s ability to assess strength by sight made him central to the search for Muzan. Ubuyashiki explicitly ordered him to withdraw upon confirming the Demon King’s identity and secretly arranged for other Hashira to protect his escape 498.

During the final preparations, he used the Corps’ communications network to coordinate battle simulations with Ubuyashiki, intelligence officers, and the other Hashira. Their objective was to control the battle’s time, location, and pace rather than allow Muzan to dictate them 501.

During the fighting, Xia Xi beheaded the new Upper Rank Three, Dark Blade, and simultaneously decapitated Gyutaro and Daki. He later reached Dawn Breathing LV.9 during the confrontation with Muzan and unveiled its Fourteenth Form 546 567. He survived, received the cultivators’ thanks, and reunited with his companions 569 570.

Dawn Breathing

Xia Xi’s self-developed primary style emerged after he studied all Five Great Breathing Styles. Kokushibo judged it closer to the origin of Breathing Styles than his own first-generation Moon Breathing 392 457.
