Background / History
Origins
The Nine Hashira system began during the Sengoku Period, when Yoriichi Tsugikuni brought Breathing Styles to the Demon Slayer Corps. The Rengoku family’s records describe this as the turning point when its members became hereditary Flame Breathing cultivators rather than samurai fighting demons through physical strength and swordsmanship alone 229.
Michikatsu Tsugikuni, who later became Kokushibo, belonged to the original Nine Hashira. Despite the generation’s reputation, Tamayo attributes its exceptional standing chiefly to Yoriichi and Michikatsu rather than to uniformly superior Corps members 390 456.
Vacancies and Attrition
The nine positions were rarely all occupied. When Kagaya Ubuyashiki inherited leadership, Rengoku and one other senior were the only serving Hashira keeping the institution alive 12 287.
High casualties also limited succession: very few Hashira survived long enough to retire. Igarashi was an exception, surviving his encounter with Akaza through Xia Xi’s treatment but losing the ability to continue wielding a sword on the front lines 204 523.
Xia Xi’s Reforms
Xia Xi challenged the Corps’ dependence on accumulated merit as a measure of rank, arguing that mission assignments should reflect actual strength. His proposals included reorganizing the Hashira into squads with captains and deputies, although the reforms initially adopted centered on swordsman ranks and Provisional Hashira adjutants 167 168 202.
The resulting system combined stricter promotion assessments, supervised field experience, regular training, and stronger support personnel. By Kanae’s appointment, six Hashira served together; Sabito, Tanjuro, and Kiseki Tokito subsequently completed the roster 268 269 354 485 495.
Authority and Duties
- High-risk demon suppression: Hashira undertake missions substantially more dangerous than those assigned to ordinary swordsmen 68.
- Deployment authority: The title carries responsibility for deploying and assigning Corps swordsmen 68.
- Response to the Twelve Kizuki: Under the later deployment system, suspected Lower Ranks warrant a Provisional Hashira or Hashira; suspected Upper Ranks require at least one Hashira, preferably among the strongest 389.
- Regional responsibilities: Serving Hashira maintain their own jurisdictions and may leave collective training when urgent missions arise 277 279.
- Instruction and assessment: Hashira train other swordsmen, assess candidates, and provide recommendations for promotion 268 368.
- Intelligence exchange: Hashira meetings include reports on Upper Rank abilities and discussion of the Corps’ response 268 486.
Appointment and Succession
Promotion Requirements
| System | Requirements |
|---|---|
| Former rules | Hold Kinoe rank and kill either fifty demons or one member of the Twelve Kizuki 268. |
| Revised combat assessment | Kill a Lower Rank alone, or withstand a designated Hashira’s attacks for a set period. Killing enough ordinary demons is no longer sufficient by itself 268. |
| Revised service requirements | Already hold Provisional Hashira rank, gain familiarity with Hashira duties, and receive a joint recommendation from several serving Hashira 268. |
- Kanae’s appointment: Her record included thirty-seven demon kills, one Lower Rank, and four months as Kazetoriin’s adjutant. Kazetoriin formally assessed her suitability, while Xia Xi confirmed that her Breathing Style and Energy Level met the standard 268.
- Tengen’s refusals: Despite being judged strong enough, Tengen declined promotion three times because he wanted to kill both a Lower Rank and fifty demons, following Xia Xi’s example 202.
- Seiko’s refusals: Yukishiro Seiko declined formal promotion twice despite having independently slain a Lower Rank and reached an Energy Level of 327 384.
- Limited seats: Hashira-level strength does not guarantee appointment; the title is restricted to nine holders 316 380.
Provisional Hashira and Tsuguko
| Designation | Relationship to the Nine Hashira |
|---|---|
| Provisional Hashira / Hashira Candidate | Elite swordsmen selected to assist serving Hashira and prepare to succeed them. Each Hashira may have at most two such adjutants 202. |
| Tsuguko | A Hashira’s personally taught disciple and heir to their legacy. The designation reflects training and potential, not necessarily demonstrated combat strength 168. |
- Adjutant duties: Accompany their Hashira, develop coordinated fighting methods, provide emergency support, and independently lead teams when needed 202.
- Reassignment after promotion: When Sabito became Waterfall Hashira, Giyu and Makomo were assigned to serve under him 368.
- Tanjuro’s deputies: The newly appointed Sun Hashira received two Wind Breathing Provisional Hashira 486.

Abilities and Training
Breathing Styles and Swordsmanship
- Individual specialization: Hashira use distinct Breathing Styles, including derivatives adapted to their own physiques and fighting methods 13 268 520.
- Combat efficiency: Their advantage includes swordsmanship, experience, coordination, and the ability to extract greater performance from their physical strength—not merely higher attributes 376.
- Historical limitations: Before the reforms, many Hashira remained unable to defeat an Upper Rank alone. Xia Xi’s later briefing places their traditional range between stronger Lower Ranks and the weakest Upper Ranks 305 406.
Bright Red Nichirin Blade
- Effect: Suppresses demon regeneration; Xia Xi demonstrates suppression lasting several minutes against an Upper Rank 271.
- Requirements: Exceptional grip strength, precise force application, willpower, and adjustments suited to the user’s Breathing Style 262 277.
- Collective mastery: By Tanjuro’s appointment, every serving Hashira has mastered Grip of Ten Thousand Jun, the red-form Supreme Territory 486.
Transparent World
- Training: Xia Xi directs candidates to improve combat skill and experience, while also arranging theory instruction aimed at developing Simulated Transparent World 384 406.
- Documented users: Dawn, Stone, and Sound have learned it by the Grand Training Camp; Tanjuro possesses it before joining the Corps 486.
- Partial attainment: Kazetoriin is counted as having partial mastery at the same stage 486.
- Later development: Kiseki Tokito also uses Transparent World in the battle against Kokushibo 514.
War Marks
- Access: Scarce Martial Mark Drug doses are reserved for the Nine Hashira during the human trials 460.
- Impact: Wider availability of War Marks produces a qualitative increase in the Hashira’s strength and helps the entire serving roster attain the red-form Supreme Territory 486.
- Exceptional marks: Tanjuro and Kiseki Tokito possess Heavenly War Marks providing threefold boosts 514.
Collective Training
- Rotating annual camps: Swordsmen and Hashira instructors are divided into three groups for seven-day training sessions, allowing the other groups to continue missions 368.
- Red-and-White Battle: Hashira lead opposing teams in capture-the-flag exercises emphasizing coordination, terrain use, and adaptation to stronger enemies 371.
- Two-Hashira Hunt: Tengen and Shinjuro act as Upper Rank opponents while trainees attempt to resist through teamwork. The instructors must sustain their Supreme Territories as long as possible 376.
- Medicinal baths: Xia Xi prepares individualized formulas using ingredients supplied by Kagaya to improve the Hashira’s physical condition 279.
Xia Xi’s Informal Strength Categories
These are Xia Xi’s Energy Level classifications, not separate offices or automatic promotion requirements 210.
| Category | Energy Level |
|---|---|
| Weak Nine Hashira | Below 300; barely qualified holders from earlier generations 210 |
| Standard Nine Hashira | Above 300 210 |
| Upper Nine Hashira | Above 500, or possessing the potential to exceed it 210 |
Equipment
- Nichirin weapons: Equipment varies by fighting style, from conventional swords to Kazetoriin’s long whip blade and Tanjuro’s great axe 485 520.
- Protective haori: Xia Xi prepares special haori for the Hashira using materials and craftsmanship offering better protection than the standard uniform. Kanae receives one embroidered with the character for “flower” 268.
- Training weapons: Unsharpened Nichirin Blades allow the Hashira to practice Bright Red Nichirin Blade techniques during exercises 376.
Major Battles
- Kokushibo encounter: Xia Xi and Tengen are overwhelmed by Upper Rank One, prompting a reassessment of the Hashira’s readiness and the six-month Supreme Territory deadline 400 404 406.
- Upper Rank interception: Xia Xi assigns Hashira to intercept known threats and positions others to provide support from different directions 517.
- Battle against Kokushibo: Tanjuro, Kiseki Tokito, and Shinjuro coordinate attacks that wound him. The later seven-Hashira assault repeatedly denies him opportunities to isolate and kill a weaker opponent 513 553.
- Confrontation with Muzan: After Xiang Kai’s Blood Demon Art encloses the fighters within Drum Street, the Hashira and Provisional Hashira find their way into Muzan’s hall and surround him 563.
