Background / History
Mumuzawa was raised as a royal heir and trained from childhood to maintain proper courtly conduct. Dio regards her dignified bearing as a deliberate response to an upbringing marked by favoritism, rather than evidence of exceptional confidence or ability 21 28.
As one of Kakin’s lowest-ranking princes, she has little political influence and no Private Soldiers of her own. Her mother, Seventh Queen Sewanchi, commands soldiers and represents a possible source of assistance. Mumuzawa repeatedly tells herself that she can become king, despite privately recognizing her shortcomings and fearing the cruelty of the succession 29 50.
Appearance
- Face: Large eyes, a pale complexion, and a slightly chubby face 22 25 31.
- Voice: Usually soft and unhurried; also described as airy and slightly husky 31 49.
- Court dress: Wears a reddish-brown court gown during her travels and her later meeting with Dio 49.
- Shopping attire: Changes into a blue dress and replaces her gold necklace with pearls for a more understated appearance 23.
Personality
Mumuzawa is naturally quiet, gentle, and generous. Her royal manners keep her courteous even when Dio ignores her greeting—an unfamiliar experience for someone accustomed to immediate attention. In private, her formal composure gives way to nervousness, curiosity, and laughter at his stories 22 29 34.
Her ambition to become king is mixed with insecurity. After the Cave Restaurant attack, she describes herself as a useless burden and looks to Nen as a possible means of changing her fate. Dio’s repeated evasions leave her disappointed, but she continues asking until he agrees to teach her 29 49.
Her attachment to Dio also brings out a possessive streak. She glares at Bokushin while Dio carries both women and later wonders why he continues carrying Bokushin after reaching safety. Nevertheless, she offers Bokushin the auction house’s only available escape route, trusting Dio to protect her if she remains behind 34 35 45.
Abilities & Skills
Royal Etiquette and Political Awareness
- Maintains measured speech, formal greetings, and courtly gestures, including a curtsy when accepting Dio as her teacher 22 49 50.
- Promises royal commendations to Dio and Drobada after they protect her, using her upbringing to cultivate their loyalty 28.
- Recognizes that investigating a Kakin-linked organization could involve the military and her eldest brother, Benjamin 50.
- Can seek help through her mother, but has limited independent political resources 50.
Knitting
- Knits during conversations and can continue working without looking down at her needles 29 49.
- Her interest in antique knitting goods is the original reason for her Yorknew City trip 30 49.
Cooperation Under Threat
- Follows Dio’s instructions during the fight with Carl rather than moving recklessly. Keeping her eyes closed helps prevent Carl from marking her with the enemy’s ability 25 27.
- Begins evacuating almost instinctively when Dio warns of an attack at the auction 30.
- Remains dependent on her protectors in combat; no personal fighting technique is demonstrated 24 29 34.
Equipment / Items
- Parasol — Normally handled by her maid; Mumuzawa asks Dio to carry it during their shopping outing 23.
- Recording mouse doll — A blue mouse doll given to her by Dio; it has a recording function and makes a sound when squeezed 23.
- Dog-and-rabbit doll set — Another gift from Dio during the outing 23.
- Knitting needles and unfinished sweater — Used during her private conversations with Dio 29.
- Ancient Knitting Needle — Purchased at auction and recovered by Dio, who returns it in an old-fashioned wooden box 49.
Relationships
- Dio — Bodyguard and eventual Nen teacher. His rescues inspire trust and romantic interest; she briefly imagines that he was sent from heaven to save her. She agrees to help investigate the organization threatening him without making that help conditional on lessons, while Dio privately recognizes that he is exploiting her trust 22 29 49 50.
- Drobada — Protector whom she trusts alongside Dio after the Cave Restaurant attack. He coordinates her escape from the auction house and shields her from dust when the building collapses 28 35 45.
- Seventh Queen Sewanchi — Her mother and a potential source of soldiers and political assistance for investigating Dio’s enemies 50.
- Benjamin — Eldest brother and First Prince. His authority over military matters makes Mumuzawa apprehensive about the proposed investigation 50.
- Bokushin — Fellow auction attendee and escape companion. Mumuzawa is jealous of Dio’s attention to her but offers to let her escape first 34 35 45.
- San — Creates the one-person doorway through which Dio evacuates Mumuzawa from the sealed auction house 35.
- Qi Peixin — Organizes the Cave Restaurant assassination attempt and is later confirmed as the enemy targeting her during the auction-house incident 25 43.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival in Yorknew City
Mumuzawa arrives at Lingong Airport on August 31 after a three-day airship journey. Her party stays at the Red Dragon Hotel, where Kakin has reserved the entire eleventh floor. A shooting on the night of arrival places her guards on heightened alert 21 22.
For subsequent outings, her escort is reduced to five close guards, with additional personnel disguised farther away. Dio volunteers for close protection despite a bounty on his own head. During their shopping trip, Mumuzawa buys him a blue dinosaur doll for 10,000 Jenny as thanks for saving her 22 23.
Cave Restaurant Assassination Attempt
Gunmen attack Mumuzawa during lunch at the Cave Restaurant. Dio shields her, carries her upstairs, and fights Carl, a Nen user acting on Qi Peixin’s orders. He takes a gunshot while protecting Mumuzawa and later uses Ripple adhesion to keep her safely on the ceiling while defeating Carl 24 25 26.
Afterward, Mumuzawa notices that Dio’s wound is more than the graze he claims and briefly sees his white, cloudlike Nen Beast. These discoveries prompt her persistent questions about supernatural abilities. Back at the hotel, her trust narrows to Dio and Drobada rather than the rest of her guards 27 28 29.
Nampis Auction House
Mumuzawa wins the antique knitting goods she came to purchase, but the auction venue becomes sealed by an enemy ability. When Dio admits that the barrier is supernatural, she teasingly challenges his earlier claim that Nen is merely a martial-arts term 30 31.
San creates an escape doorway that permits only one person to pass. Mumuzawa offers it to Bokushin, but Dio prioritizes his assignment and pushes the prince outside instead. She waits nearby and is distressed when the building collapses, until Dio returns with Bokushin and orders her back to the hotel 35 45.
Becoming Dio’s Student
During the return journey, Dio brings back her forgotten Ancient Knitting Needle. Mumuzawa interprets his thoughtfulness as evidence that he cares about her and directly asks him to teach her his supernatural ability 49.
Dio proposes lessons in exchange for information about the Zoo, the organization connected to the bounty on him. She rejects treating her assistance as a bargain and promises to investigate regardless. Dio agrees to teach her anyway, and she formally welcomes him as her teacher 50.
Trivia
- Although female, Mumuzawa holds the title “Prince” and speaks of becoming “king” 21 29.
- Dio remembers her as the first royal child killed in the original manga after yielding her own interests at her mother’s insistence. This is his knowledge of the manga, not an event in the novel’s documented storyline 21.
