Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Acquisition of The World 2 A mental connection confirms the Stand belongs to him. It can become a phantom and merge into his body.
Initial Time Stop baseline 3 Stops time for approximately 0.5 seconds, with a one-minute cooldown. The damaged Stand's strength and speed are estimated at C and B respectively.
Time Stop duration increase 6 Duration increases by approximately 0.2 seconds, bringing it to about 0.7 seconds. Cooldown remains unchanged; Dio suspects improved synchronization after combat.
Temporary access to Nen and Dr. Yorkshire 10 Cheadle's Yorkshire Registrar lends him half her aura and shares Dr. Yorkshire for six hours. He manifests a sterile suit that blocks Post-Mortem Nen.
Independent Ten, Ren, and affinity identification 13 After the loan, he can see aura and maintain Ten instinctively. He releases Ren and identifies his Emission affinity through Water Divination.
Ripple–Nen integration 15 17 Experiments with Cheadle establish that different Ripples alter his aura's properties. He begins designing his Nen ability around Ripple rather than Emission alone.
Combat-ready Zetsu 18 Approaches Drobada almost face-to-face without being noticed, demonstrating the results of sustained concealment training.
Demonstrated Gyo and Ken 25 Uses Gyo to inspect Carl's aura and switches to Ken against her reflected attack.
Creation of a Nen Beast 27 28 Successfully creates a mist-producing beast during combat with Carl, then names the conscious white cloud Atmosphere Creator. Weather phenomena become its broader development concept.
Ko and veteran-Hunter-level aura reserves 34 After roughly a month of Ripple-assisted training, his latent aura reserves reach a veteran Hunter's level. He combines Ko with Ripple, though it cannot break the sealed auction building.
Metallic Ripple Nen developed into Nen Nails 42 Channels aura-dissolving Ripple Nen through embedded Light Steel Bullets, spreading it across the Leader Catfish's body.
Arrowhead Fragment absorption 47 The fragment enters The World's heart. An uncontrolled, DIO-like state produces a five-second Time Stop, but does not establish that duration as his normal limit.
Enhanced Time Stop and Time Stop Rampage 48 Normal duration rises from approximately one second to nearly two seconds, while cooldown falls to 45 seconds. He discovers he can force an extension at the cost of pain and dangerous mental interference.
Cooldown bypass 49 Confirms he can force one additional Time Stop during cooldown. Severe exhaustion and a temporarily longer cooldown make this usable no more than once per battle by his assessment.

Background / History

Arrival and the Original Body

Dio had traveled through the JOJO world before arriving in the Hunter × Hunter world. He believes DIO's severed head accidentally brought him there and supplied The World; he later suspects it also left an imprint within his soul 28 48.

After waking, he sorts through the memories of his body's original owner, Diego. Both had been orphans since childhood. Diego attended National Medical University through student-union funding and a full scholarship, leaving him with little savings. His mentor was Cheadle Yorkshire 3.

Cheadle remembered her former student as a promising undergraduate researcher whose work could potentially lead to a Diseases Hunter star rating. She had offered to supervise his master's and doctoral studies, but he declined at graduation. Her information described his recent ordeal as a shipwreck followed by rescue and recuperation in a kindhearted person's home 6.

Recovery and Blackbra

Ripple restores Dio from severe, bedridden injuries to near-full health within a few days, astonishing Ian. The World repairs itself much more slowly, preventing him from relying on its physical strength 3.

Dio's fight with the wanted criminal Blackbra exposes the danger of Nen intimidation and deceptive abilities. He overcomes the returning Magic Ball, burns it with Crimson Ripple Overdrive, and kills Blackbra with Spring Fist before the criminal can escape into a sewer. Despite winning, Dio recognizes that a more skilled Nen user could have made the encounter far more dangerous and decides to learn Nen 4 5.

Cheadle and the Secret Court

Dio travels toward Loi City and contacts Cheadle, presenting Ripple as a discovery concerning the human body in hopes of securing trustworthy Nen instruction. She subsequently recruits him as a substitute clerk for a Secret Court trial beneath Hundred-Ring Island. The proceedings immediately appear suspicious: the case file describes espionage, but Judge Bell announces a tax-evasion charge 6 8.

An explosion traps Dio and Cheadle in a passage contaminated by Post-Mortem Nen. Dio carries her to safety and revives her with Ripple; she lends him aura and Dr. Yorkshire through Yorkshire Registrar. During their escape, he accepts a confidential task in exchange for Nen instruction, while declining her invitation to join a team 10 12.

Temporary Hunter and Royal Bodyguard

At the Hunter Association, Dio awakens independent Nen use and meets Netero. The chairman warns him to conceal his secrets and killing intent, then offers him a commission and the loan of a Hunter License. Dio accepts Mizaistom's assignment, although he cannot use Netero's license, and prepares for encounters with experienced Nen users 13 16 17.

Assigned to Mumuzawa's security detail, Dio gathers information from private soldiers and learns the bodyguard trade from Drobada and the other guards. When Cheadle warns that a Secret Court-linked account has placed a bounty on him, he refuses to abandon the prince 19 20 21 22.

At the Cave Restaurant, Dio protects Mumuzawa from gunmen and Carl's Puppet-String Black Hole. The encounter also produces his first successful Nen Beast, whose fog supports his efforts to conceal Time Stop 24 25 26 27.

Auction Siege and the Zoo

During an auction, an enemy ability seals the building while fish-shaped Nen Beasts kill people inside. Dio uses Ripple Radar and fog to navigate the danger. After a coordinated strike with Drobada fails to breach a window, he hides Bokushin with his cloud and moves upstairs to confront the threat 31 32 34 38.

Dio discovers that the Leader Catfish tracks Nen and uses Zetsu, protected by Ripple, to escape its attention. He turns bullets embedded in its body into aura-dissolving Nen Nails, pushing his Ripple nearly to exhaustion before the beast collapses and Qi Peixin dies 41 42 43.

Evidence recovered from the mercenaries leads to Laka Buqier. Cheadle's investigation identifies him as a Kakin-connected spy belonging to the Zoo, but he dies by suicide before Dio can question him. Dio declines Cheadle's offer to continue the investigation and resolves to pursue the organization himself 43 46.

Arrowhead Fragment and Mumuzawa's Agreement

An Arrowhead Fragment forcibly enters The World, provoking uncontrolled laughter, a DIO-like mental state, and an unusually long Time Stop. Dio's subsequent tests reveal both a permanent improvement to his normal Time Stop and the dangerous limit-breaking technique he names Time Stop Rampage 47 48 49.

Mumuzawa asks Dio to teach her his supernatural ability. He agrees through a deal and asks her about the Zoo, seeing her royal position as a possible route into Kakin's political sphere. Although he recognizes that he is exploiting her trust, he is disturbed by his lack of guilt; the narration compares his unnoticed indifference to DIO's 49 50.

Appearance

Dio is a tall young man who appears to be in his early twenties. Ellie, a former laboratory junior, notices that his bearing has become markedly more mature in a short time 4 7.

  • Height: Approximately 195 cm 18.
  • Mission attire: A bespoke black suit 18.
  • Expression in combat: An expressionless face and icy stare that unsettle Blackbra 4.
  • Movement: Approaches the security team with utterly silent footsteps 18.

Personality

Dio is analytical but willing to revise a mistaken judgment. Blackbra's returning baseball forces him to reconsider the enemy's Nen category, while the Leader Catfish's reaction to aura-bearing bullets leads him to test ordinary ammunition. His familiarity with the original manga gives him useful information, but he explicitly recognizes that forgotten details can undermine that advantage 4 41.

He values independence and secrecy. He refuses Cheadle's team invitation because he has too many secrets, declines her offer to cover his lodging, and repeatedly conceals the nature of Nen from Mumuzawa. His willingness to remain on guard duty despite a bounty nevertheless shows a strong commitment to the responsibility he has accepted 12 16 22 29.

Dio is ruthless toward enemies: he considers an enemy's companions legitimate targets and uses hostile mercenaries to draw the Leader Catfish's attention. His reaction to Qi Peixin's death is less straightforward, however; the man's suffering leaves him without his usual sense of relief. By his agreement with Mumuzawa, that capacity for unease contrasts with a growing, DIO-like indifference 40 42 43 50.

Abilities & Skills

The World

The World is Dio's golden humanoid Stand, whose principal ability is stopping time. Its damaged early condition makes it physically weaker than Dio himself 2 3.

  • Time Stop: Allows Dio to reposition, interrupt attacks, and perform actions before opponents can react. Its documented duration and cooldown improve over time 4 6 48.
  • Physical assistance: Deflects Blackbra's suspended baseball and propels Dio toward Mumuzawa during Carl's attack 4 25.
  • Shared injuries: Damage to the Stand is also suffered by Dio. He therefore avoids exposing it to powerful Nen attacks 3 28.
  • Defensive limitation: The World has no aura protection and cannot use Ripple to accelerate its repairs 3 28.
  • Firearm limitation: Dio's firearms cannot function during stopped time 24.
  • Tactical limits: Dio identifies attacks faster than his activation, overwhelming defenses, distant or wide-area attacks, curses, poison, and traps as threats Time Stop does not automatically solve 28.

Time Stop Rampage

Time Stop Rampage forces The World past its ordinary duration or cooldown limits, but exposes Dio to alien emotions he associates with a possible DIO imprint 48 49.

  • Duration extension: Keeps time stopped beyond the normal limit, causing excruciating pain and increasingly severe mental interference 48.
  • Cooldown bypass: Provides an emergency additional activation, followed by mental exhaustion and a temporarily extended cooldown 49.
  • Mental effects: Produces manic exhilaration, feelings of invincibility, compulsive laughter, and the urge to cry “wryyy” 47 48.
  • Safeguard: The World can suppress the intrusive emotional state. After the cooldown-bypass test, the influence fades without its intervention 48 49.
  • Preferred use: Dio resolves to reserve Rampage for bypassing cooldown rather than extending duration, which he considers substantially more dangerous 49.

Ripple / Hamon

Ripple is generated through specialized breathing. It supports healing, close combat, movement, and resistance to hostile Nen, but Dio considers its standalone destructive power inferior to Nen 3 4 5.

  • Recovery: Heals his severe injuries within days and revives unconscious Cheadle 3 10.
  • Nen resistance: Frees him from Blackbra's intimidation, disperses clinging Post-Mortem Nen, and protects him from malicious aura while using Zetsu 4 10 42.
  • Sunlight Yellow Overdrive: A powerful heavy punch; Dio's blow breaks Blackbra's ribs and left arm 4 5.
  • Crimson Ripple Overdrive: Releases intense heat, burning Magic Ball and reducing Qi Peixin's corpse to ash 5 43.
  • Metallic Ripple Overdrive: Clings to metal. Its Nen-enhanced form strengthens metal weapons and dissolves opponents' aura 17 42.
  • Blue-Green Ripple Overdrive: Travels through water 17.
  • Adhesion and repulsion: Let him cling to ceilings, leap between surfaces, and temporarily secure Mumuzawa overhead 17 26 42.
  • Spring Fist: A technique taught by Baron Zeppeli that temporarily extends his reach by dislocating and extending his joints 5.
  • Breathing requirement: During the Blackbra fight, he avoids speaking because it would interrupt the breathing sustaining his protection 4.

Nen

Dio is naturally an Emitter. Ripple modifies the properties of his aura, allowing effects beyond straightforward Emission without changing his underlying affinity 13 17.

  • Fundamentals and advanced applications: Demonstrates Ten, Ren, Zetsu, Gyo, Ken, and Ko 13 18 25 34.
  • Stealth: His practiced Zetsu conceals him from ordinary Nen users at very close range, though he considers it ineffective against experts such as Cheadle and Netero 18 42.
  • Emission practice: Trains by releasing Nen bullets during patrol 22.
  • Accelerated growth: Ripple practice increases his aura capacity faster than usual 16.
  • Nen Nails: Uses embedded Light Steel Bullets to spread Metallic Ripple Nen over the Leader Catfish and steadily dissolve its aura. Defeating the beast nearly exhausts his Ripple 42 43.
  • Temporary borrowed ability: Dr. Yorkshire was available through Cheadle's six-hour loan, not established as one of his permanent abilities 10.

Ripple Radar

Ripple Radar is a sensing technique rather than a separate Nen ability. Dio sends Nen-amplified Ripples through solid surfaces and interprets their propagation and reflections 24.

  • Spatial mapping: Produces a three-dimensional impression of nearby layouts and moving people 24.
  • Combat reconnaissance: Locates concealed gunmen, monitors enemy positions, and helps him navigate an occupied building 24 31.
  • Fog compatibility: Remains useful when Atmosphere Creator's fog blocks his eyesight 32.
  • Contact limitation: A physical presence that cannot be reached through the floor or walls is difficult to resolve; this initially prevents him from clearly identifying the monster upstairs 31.

Atmosphere Creator

Atmosphere Creator is a conscious white cloud Nen Beast, also referred to as Misty. Dio develops it around weather phenomena, drawing inspiration from Weather Report 28 34.

  • Demonstrated ability: Creates dense fog to conceal movement, reduce the risk of exposing Time Stop, and facilitate escape 27 28 32.
  • Visibility trade-off: The fog obscures Dio's sight as well as his enemies'; Ripple Radar compensates for this 32.
  • Protective assignment: Remains with Bokushin while she hides in a restroom 38.
  • Replaceability: Dio favors a Nen Beast because he can recreate it if destroyed, unlike an injured Stand 28.
  • Unrealized development: Suppressing enemies' En through restrictions and covenants is a proposed upgrade, not a demonstrated effect 32.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Handgun and Light Steel Bullets — Custom ammunition arranged through Cheadle. The bullets briefly retain Ripple; Dio prepares seven magazines containing 49 rounds before the market outing 23.
  • Ordinary ammunition — Used to test whether the Leader Catfish responds to bullets themselves or the Nen attached to them 41.
  • Beetle Phone — Purchased before leaving for Loi City and used to coordinate with Cheadle and Drobada 6 22 34.
  • Arrowhead Fragment — A fragment of the Stand Arrow that enters The World's heart and cannot be retrieved. It strengthens Time Stop but does not give The World a confirmed Requiem form 47 48.
  • Ancient Knitting Needle — Retrieved from the auction and given to Mumuzawa 49.
  • Dinosaur doll — A gift from Mumuzawa; Dio reciprocates with a blue mouse doll that has a recording function 23.
  • Netero's Hunter License — Offered as a loan for the commission, but Dio cannot use it; the arrangement does not establish that he earned a license himself 16 17.

Relationships

  • Cheadle Yorkshire — Mentor of his body's original owner and subsequently Dio's Nen teacher. They survive the Secret Court disaster together, experiment with Ripple, and remain in contact over the bounty 3 10 12 17 22 46.
  • Isaac Netero — Advises him on secrecy, killing intent, and gaining strength through real experience; helps arrange his commission 16 17.
  • Mumuzawa — The Twelfth Prince and Dio's protection target. She trusts him after he saves her, seeks supernatural instruction, and becomes a potential source of information about the Zoo 22 29 49 50.
  • Drobada — Fellow security professional and tactical partner. They coordinate protection and attempt a simultaneous breach of the sealed auction building 18 24 34.
  • Bokushin — Private soldier whom Dio questions through a card game. He later rescues her from hostile Nen pressure and hides her with Atmosphere Creator 19 38.
  • Mizaistom — Arranges Dio's temporary Hunter commission and warns him that experienced Nen users may attack 17.
  • Baron Zeppeli — Taught Dio Spring Fist, which he uses to kill Blackbra 5.
  • DIO — Distinct from Dio himself. His severed head is linked to Dio's arrival and acquisition of The World; Dio suspects a residual imprint causes Rampage's personality interference 2 48.
  • San — An unpredictable Nen user whose intervention disrupts Dio's restaurant plan, but who later offers a way through the sealed building 24 35.
  • Qi Peixin — Organizes the attempt on Mumuzawa at the Cave Restaurant and becomes the enemy within the giant catfish. His death leaves Dio unusually unsettled 25 43.
  • The Zoo — Kakin-connected spy organization implicated in the bounty on Dio. He intends to find it and retaliate 46 50.
