Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Bio-Digimon fusion with Belphemon 42 43 Uses his own modification technology to merge with Belphemon after failing to develop remote control. The resulting bio-Digimon attacks New York; its green horns allow Mo Si to identify his involvement.

Background / History

Ten years before the main conflict, Kurata served as Suguru Daimon’s assistant and joined the expedition into the Digital World alongside Suguru and Captain Satsuma. An accident ended the expedition, and everyone except Suguru withdrew to the human world 24 39.

Kurata began slaughtering Digimon five years before his confrontation with Suguru. His actions obstructed peaceful coexistence and forced Suguru to stake his life as a guarantee for humanity, resulting in five years of house arrest under Yggdrasil 40.

Over years of incursions, Kurata captured Digimon, developed artificial Digimon called Gizumon, and harvested his victims’ life energy to strengthen Belphemon. His ultimate plan was to bring Belphemon to a perfected state and use its power to rule the world 14 24 31. Angewomon was among the Digimon imprisoned in his laboratory 5.

Appearance

  • White laboratory coat: Worn when he confronts Suguru Daimon in the Digital World 39.
  • Glasses: He adjusts them while discussing Saint’s next modification 41.
  • Concealed intentions: Frequently presents a friendly or relaxed smile while issuing threats or treating others as expendable 15 39 42.

Personality

Kurata is a conceited scientific genius whose ambitions extend far beyond research. He regards Digimon as inherently vicious and places virtually no value on their lives; even human lives matter little to him beyond his own. He initially dismisses Angewomon as an unremarkable captive, then becomes obsessed with studying her once she displays abilities he cannot explain 14 15 29 40.

His relationships are governed by usefulness. He accommodates the Digimon Hunters because their ability to release Digisoul is rare, but murders his guards when his backers abandon him and strips Saint of his power once he considers him unnecessary 29 31 42.

Kurata treats compassion as a weakness to exploit. Against Suguru, he turns the threat of a catastrophe of his own making into an accusation that Suguru would be responsible for destroying both worlds. He attempts the same manipulation against Mo Si, only to be killed before it can save him 40 41 44.

Abilities & Skills

Bio-Digimon Technology

Kurata’s modification procedures allow humans to obtain Digimon powers 14 15.

  • Implantation: His three Digimon Hunters—Saint, Nanami, and Ivan—undergo surgery and use Digisoul through their Digivices to become bio-Digimon 15 29.
  • Extraction and replacement: He removes Thunderbirdmon from Saint before supplying Darkdramon. The extraction also removes Chirinmon’s spiritual energy, inadvertently ending Kudamon’s control over Saint 30 31 39.
  • Medical applications: The technology can restore mobility to paralyzed people and strengthen physically weak people 14.
  • Life-energy conversion: He extracts Saint’s Darkdramon and converts it into energy for Belphemon 42.

Gizumon Development

Kurata creates and mass-produces artificial Digimon for hunting, security, and permanent extermination 24 31.

  • Gizumon AT: Its chrome digizoid shell withstands Mo Si’s initial attack with little damage 15.
  • Soul-destroying Laser Beam: Victims leave no Digi-Egg and cannot be reborn; their remains can be collected as life energy 15 24.
  • Gizumon XT: Evolved machines with limb-like structures, greater agility, and increased combat power 39.
  • Limit: Gizumon AT cannot withstand Sleipmon, while Gizumon XT can delay Suguru and BanchoLeomon but cannot defeat them 31 41.

Artificial Digisoul

Kurata cannot naturally release his own Digisoul, but compensates through technology 29.

  • Artificial Digisoul has functionality comparable to naturally released Digisoul.
  • It requires an external storage device, making it less convenient to use than an innate supply 29.

Belphemon Control

After failing to create a remote-control device, Kurata merges with Belphemon and operates its power from within 42 44.

  • Defeats New York DATS members and military forces during the peace conference attack 43.
  • Releases enormous black flames capable of destroying the conference building and a large area behind it 44.
  • Yggdrasil considers Kurata’s ambition incompatible with Belphemon’s embodiment of sloth and questions how much of its power he can wield 43.
  • Belphemon is destroyed by Mo Si’s Glittering Arrow, powered by Digisoul gathered worldwide 44.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Space-Time Shock Bombs: Open passages between the human and Digital Worlds. Repeated use weakens their separating barrier; further intensive use could cause the worlds to collide 24 40.
  • Modification Capsule: A liquid-filled surgical chamber used to implant and extract Digimon. Kurata later locks the depowered Saint inside as a research subject 30 42.
  • Life Energy Collector: Absorbs Gryphonmon’s life energy after a lethal laser attack 39.
  • Surveillance systems: Reveal Angewomon’s unexplained disappearance and subsequent transformation, prompting Kurata to demand her capture alive 15.
  • Remote switch: Triggers an explosion that opens a passage during his escape from Suguru Daimon 41.

Relationships

  • Mo Si / Angewomon — Escaped captive, research target, and eventual killer. Kurata blames her for exposing his operations and making him a fugitive 15 31 42 44.
  • Saint / Sei — Enforcer and modification subject. Saint’s warning saves Kurata from DATS’s raid, but Kurata later removes his Darkdramon and imprisons him 31 42.
  • Nanami and Ivan — Digimon Hunters under his command; alongside Saint, they are the only subordinates able to release their own Digisoul 29.
  • Suguru Daimon — Former superior and expedition companion turned enemy. Kurata exploits Suguru’s concern for both worlds to escape capture 39 40 41.
  • Captain Satsuma — Former expedition companion who organizes the evidence-gathering operation and authorized raid against him 24 28 30.
  • Kudamon / Sleipmon — Royal Knight who seeks his elimination and destroys his evacuated base 25 31.
  • Belphemon — Greatest trump card and intended means of world domination; ultimately becomes Kurata’s fusion partner 31 42.
  • Political backers and Guard Team — Former supporters and security personnel. When his backers cut ties, Kurata orders Gizumon AT to kill the guards who know his secrets 31.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Laboratory Escape

When Angewomon breaks out of her pod, Kurata initially orders the elimination of disobedient Digimon. Surveillance footage changes his priorities: her unexplained absence and ability to assume ZombieSatanmon’s form convince him that she possesses valuable secrets. He orders her captured alive and gives the Digimon Hunters a new mission 14 15.

Exposure and Failed DATS Raid

Saint’s interrogation exposes Kurata’s hunters, permanent Digimon killings, and use of Space-Time Shock Bombs. DATS’s barrier scans support the connection between his activities and increasingly frequent Digimon appearances near Tokyo 24.

DATS uses Saint to obtain footage of Kurata opening a portal. However, the modification procedure removes the spiritual energy controlling Saint, who reveals the undercover operation. Kurata relocates his important resources within half an hour, leaving Sleipmon to destroy an evacuated base. Abandoned by his human backers, he flees to the Digital World 28 29 30 31.

Digital World Pursuit

Yggdrasil declares Kurata a major threat and dispatches Royal Knights to hunt him 33. Kurata’s forces kill Gryphonmon, drawing Suguru and BanchoLeomon into a confrontation. When BioDarkdramon proves outmatched, Kurata threatens to destroy the barrier between the worlds 39 40.

His claim that timed bombs have already been planted across both worlds is explicitly a bluff. He supports it with a real explosion, diverts Suguru toward preventing further detonations, and escapes before Gallantmon arrives. Kurata then returns to the human world with Saint, surviving Gizumon XT, and his relocated equipment 41.

New York Attack and Death

Discovering Angewomon’s diplomatic role, Kurata plans to sabotage the peace conference and reignite conflict between humans and Digimon. He sacrifices Saint’s Darkdramon to strengthen Belphemon, merges with the demon lord, and attacks New York. Mo Si identifies him publicly despite his attempt to conceal his involvement 42 43.

Mo Si destroys Belphemon with Glittering Arrow. Kurata survives beside its Digi-Egg and attempts to escape with his last Space-Time Shock Bomb, but a Holy Arrow severs his right arm. He again claims that planted bombs will destroy the barrier unless he deactivates them. Mo Si immediately kills him with Heavenly Purple Light; the final bomb claim remains unresolved at his death 44.
