Aozaki heir and apprentice mage 194 207 Inherits her grandfather’s legacy roughly two years before the Misaki confrontation. Possesses True Magic, but protective formulas and psychological barriers prevent her from using it freely.
Recognition of her close-combat aptitude 202 Roland identifies Mana Burst as her circuits’ defining characteristic and recommends combining reinforcement with close combat rather than fighting as a stationary artillery mage.
Practical Mana Burst breakthrough 204 Applies Roland’s advice while answering Alice’s call for help, propelling herself toward the mansion like an azure rocket.
Integrated ranged and close combat 208 215 Combines rapid-fire Magic Bullets, evasive movement, and Mana Burst against Touko’s puppets. Against Touko herself, prepares a compressed, Crest-amplified barrage exceeding her previous performance.
Post-resurrection offensive breakthrough 216 217 Restored by Roland’s Bites the Dust after Beo destroys her heart. Immediately compresses three-stage magecraft into an instant and fires her strongest Magic Bullet yet; the resurrection is Roland’s intervention, not her own ability.

Advanced temporal applications 220 222 225 Demonstrates injury restoration, borrowing materials across time, separation from present cause and effect, and personal timeline acceleration. These applications still cannot overcome Made in Heaven.
Later development under Roland 640 Her True Magic has diverged substantially from its original World Line development. Uses Fifth Magic-powered bombardment to overwhelm Blackmore’s flock while serving as the allied forces’ emergency safeguard.

Background / History

Aoko originally intended to leave Misaki after middle school, work part-time in Tokyo, and pursue admission to a national university. Touko’s departure overturned those plans: before Aoko turned fifteen, the Aozaki Family’s magical responsibilities were abruptly placed in her hands 194.

She subsequently moved into Alice Kuonji’s mansion, where Alice became both her teacher and friend. Their shared life combined magical training and defense of Misaki with ordinary problems such as meals, commuting, and household expenses. At school, Aoko maintained a reputation as a conscientious student council president and a model student trusted by her teachers 194 197 204.

Her inheritance provided True Magic rather than financial security. She contributed her living allowance to the household and worried about food costs, while Alice’s expensive black tea purchases strained their budget further 194 210.

Appearance

Aoko has long, smooth black hair in her ordinary state and blue eyes. Activating True Magic changes her hair to a fiery red and gives her a markedly more mature presence 215 218 228.

  • Ordinary clothing: Frequently wears her Misaki High School uniform, even when expecting combat 212.
  • Patrol clothing: Initially changes only her upper clothing into a close-fitting wool sweater, retaining her uniform skirt 200.
  • True Magic appearance: Her uniform is replaced by jeans and an off-the-shoulder, short-sleeved top 218.
  • Magic Crest: Revealed on her right arm when she prepares her amplified barrage against Touko 215.
  • Expression and bearing: Usually looks stern or displeased, giving her an intimidating reputation despite her popularity at school 194 196.

Personality

Aoko is energetic, competitive, and direct. She prefers taking the initiative to waiting for an enemy’s plans to unfold, and being underestimated provokes her especially strongly. Even with her future self’s greater composure, she prefers settling disputes through a straightforward contest rather than schemes 197 207 220.

Her commitment to magecraft does not erase her ordinary moral judgment. She rejects the idea that killing an uninvolved person becomes acceptable simply because she is a mage. Against Touko, however, she accepts a potentially lethal confrontation because both sisters knowingly stand on the same battlefield 202.

Her loyalty to Alice repeatedly overrides self-preservation. She refuses to let Alice fight alone, respects the mansion’s restrictions on visitors, and feels guilty when her own inheritance draws Alice into danger. Alice later identifies Aoko’s desire to protect everything as a fundamental difference between her and Roland 202 207 226 228.

Aoko initially fears that using True Magic will mean abandoning her former identity. Ultimately, her promises, attachments, and refusal to accept helplessness become the reasons she crosses that threshold. Her tendency to leave consequences to her future self remains intact afterward 207 212 217 220.

Abilities & Skills

Magic Circuits and Energy Efficiency

Aoko’s circuits are simple and specialized rather than broadly versatile. Their speed, durability, and exceptional energy efficiency compensate for limitations in quality and output 201 202 218.

  • Activating her circuits can produce audible sound; her energy generation is described as faster than her blood flow 201.
  • Sustains far greater repeated fire than ordinary mages through minimal energy waste 202.
  • Performs poorly at several basic techniques, including suggestion, projection, and substitution. Even suggestion spells can accidentally become offensive projectiles 196 200.
  • Her repertoire remains small even after gaining future experience, making preparation and specialized countermeasures important 220.

Magic Bullets

Aoko’s primary offensive magecraft converts magical energy into blue ether projectiles. Her extraordinary firing rate earns comparisons to a heavy machine gun and, later, the title “Human Rocket Launcher” 202 218.

  • Rapid fire: Produces dense barrages capable of overwhelming ordinary mages and keeping Touko’s regenerating puppets off the riverbank 202 208.
  • Compressed barrage: Uses her Magic Crest and multi-stage compression to produce firepower exceeding a tank’s main gun or a missile. The close-range version also risks injuring her through its aftermath 215.
  • Future-enhanced bombardment: Deploys hundreds of bullets from prepared formulas and Mystic Codes, each described as having destructive power comparable to Age of Gods Grand Magecraft 220.
  • Material conversion: Recombines borrowed materials with her bullets to attack opponents who cannot be overcome through raw output alone 221 222.
  • Large-area suppression: Converts energy extracted through the Fifth Magic into a sky-filling barrage against Blackmore 640.

Reinforcement and Mana Burst

Mana Burst is the innate characteristic of Aoko’s circuits. It channels her efficient energy use into explosive physical movement and force 202.

  • Reinforces her speed and striking power sufficiently to shatter stone and break metal 200 215.
  • Propels her over long distances at speeds too fast for the naked eye to follow 204.
  • Extends force beyond her limbs, allowing her to break out of Touko’s encircling flames without a foothold 214.
  • Supports close-range evasion and attacks while she continues firing Magic Bullets 208.
  • Limits: Early sustained use exhausts her human body, requiring rest and Alice’s potion. Her initial inexperience also prevents her from achieving the brief flight that the technique could otherwise allow 207 214.

Fifth Magic — “Blue”

Aoko’s True Magic has a destructive essence; time travel is one expression of it rather than its complete nature 220.

  • Future experience: Adds the experience of her future self to her present body without replacing that body or its existing Magic Formulas. Much of that experience becomes dreamlike after she releases the effect 219 220 228.
  • Borrowing across time: Obtains materials she does not presently possess, including an AT Field borrowed from Alice in the future 221 222.
  • Injury restoration: Restores her damaged arm with blue radiance and later survives catastrophic injuries by throwing them into the past 220 225.
  • Subjective Axis fixation: Severs her connection to present cause and effect, allowing attacks to pass through her. While isolated this way, she cannot interfere with reality 222.
  • Timeline acceleration: Adjusts her own temporal flow to pursue Roland during Made in Heaven’s acceleration. To ordinary living beings, her resulting speed is effectively indistinguishable from stopped time 225.
  • World effects: Its activation produces a sea of white flowers and alters the surrounding world on a scale compared to a Reality Marble 218 640.

Limitations

  • Her initial access is obstructed by inherited protective formulas, psychological trauma, and fear of losing her former identity 207 212.
  • Temporal borrowing and shortcuts place burdens or energy debts upon the world and Aoko herself 222.
  • During Roland’s redirected attack, even briefly releasing her temporal protection would erase her present body 222.
  • The Fifth Magic cannot match Made in Heaven’s ultimate acceleration and fails to function in the void between the universe’s ending and creation, where the Timeline is absent 225.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Aozaki Family Magic Crest — Her inherited Crest supports amplified and compressed Magic Bullet formulas 208 215.
  • Alice’s invisibility prop — Conceals her opening approach against Touko, though Touko counters it with area-covering Runes 214.
  • Prepared Mystic Codes — Contain Magic Bullets used in her future-enhanced opening bombardment against Roland 220.
  • Roland Terminal — Used to investigate Roland’s standing within the Holy Church 569.

Relationships

  • Touko Aozaki — Older sister and rival over the Aozaki inheritance. Touko seeks revenge and True Magic, while Aoko refuses to flee their confrontation. After defeating her, Aoko agrees to stop pursuing her when Roland intervenes 189 202 214 220.
  • Alice Kuonji — Housemate, magecraft teacher, close friend, and combat partner. Their trust lets them coordinate with minimal explanation. Their shared involvement with Roland briefly creates distance, but they reconcile 204 207 234 236.
  • Roland — Initially mistakes him for Touko’s husband and calls him her brother-in-law. He guides her combat development, secretly gives her a chance to survive death, and uses her True Magic to advance Heaven’s Ritual. Their antagonistic relationship later becomes romantic 196 202 216 223 230 231.
  • Aozaki grandfather — Predecessor who leaves her True Magic and its protective restrictions, but little material wealth 207 210.
  • Kumari Kanaruko — Friend and student council treasurer. Aoko confides in her about her plans for London and difficulties balancing her personal relationships 231.
  • Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg — Fellow True Magic User whom Aoko calls upon when Crimson Moon’s influence threatens the planet and possibly parallel worlds. He appears while complaining that she is leaving the problem to him 640.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Meeting Roland and Defending Misaki

  • Meets Roland while treating herself to conveyor-belt sushi. His supposed connection to Touko leads Aoko to interpret him as her wealthy, exploited brother-in-law 194 196.
  • Discovers that the three banknotes he gave her are counterfeit, leaving her household finances worse rather than better 197 198.
  • Attacks him during a patrol, but his Shaori defeats her reinforced strikes. Their subsequent conversation redirects her training toward Mana Burst and close combat 200 202.
  • Answers Alice’s call during the Shadowkhan attack by returning to the mansion and releasing the Hound of the Rose 204.
  • Refuses Alice’s offer to stay out of the next battle. At Taochuan, she holds off Touko’s puppets while Alice prepares Night’s Banquet, only to discover that Roland is their enemy’s ally 207 208.

Duel with Touko and True Magic Awakening

  • Follows Touko to a snowfield and attempts to overcome her through reinforced close combat and a compressed Magic Bullet barrage 212 214 215.
  • Beo pierces her chest and destroys her heart before she can fire. Roland’s previously planted Bites the Dust restores her unharmed 215 216.
  • Uses the second chance to fire immediately, but Touko survives and immobilizes her with Mystic Eyes 217.
  • Draws resolve from her promises and attachments, activates True Magic, and brings her future self’s experience into the fight. She defeats Touko without revealing the Fifth Magic’s full nature 217 218 219.

Heaven’s Ritual and the Universe’s End

  • Challenges Roland after he rescues Touko, hoping to fight him before he acquires the power she remembers from the future 220.
  • Reveals increasingly specialized temporal techniques, inadvertently giving Roland the magician’s perspective on time needed to advance his ritual 222 223.
  • Attempts to stop Made in Heaven by accelerating herself and repeatedly displacing her injuries into the past. Her final punch reaches only a tangible afterimage 225.
  • Is carried into the void between the universe’s destruction and creation, where her True Magic no longer responds 225.

The New World

  • Awakens after the completed time cycle and acknowledges that Roland defeated her through superior strength, not merely deception 228.
  • Uses the Fifth Magic to determine that attacking Roland would deprive the planet and its species of a future 228.
  • Learns that his fate has been bound to the worlds he created. As the Fifth True Magic User, she is an indispensable participant in fixing the possibility of the Sixth Magic; she ultimately stops resisting his final demand 230.
  • Announces plans to continue her studies in London. To avoid simply accepting financial support, she borrows money from Roland in Touko’s name—then learns Touko has already borrowed money in hers 231.
  • Reconciles with Alice after their concealed involvement with Roland strains their friendship 233 234 236.

Later World Line Developments

  • Uses her True Magic User status to obtain confidential Clock Tower information about Dead Apostle Ancestors, whose existence differs from the future she remembers. Her investigation also reveals the Holy Church’s recognition of Roland as a living saint 569.
  • Remains in Misaki during the later conflict as a safeguard capable of responding to unforeseen disasters. Blackmore’s attack draws her into action, and she destroys his flock with Fifth Magic-powered bombardment 640.
  • Recognizes that Blackmore’s apparent sacrifice has delayed her while Crimson Moon’s influence spreads, prompting her appeal to Zelretch 640.
