Power Progression

Saber's documented improvements come from Master compatibility, magical-energy supply, Sacred Sword releases, and inversion rather than a sequence of cultivation realms.

Incarnations

• Proto Saber is explicitly identified as the male King Arthur summoned through Avalon while it is possessed by Shendu. He and Lancelot establish that they originate from different worlds 41 75.
• Artoria is the female King Arthur summoned by Rin in the later war. Rin distinguishes her from the male Saber she previously encountered 248.
• Artoria Alter is the inverted form of Rin's Saber, created after Kama takes over her Contract—not a transformation of Proto Saber 255.
• The early narration varies in its presentation: Chapter 24 uses feminine pronouns and the name Artoria, while later passages explicitly identify that war's Saber as male Proto Saber 24 41 75.

Background / History

Before accepting kingship, Saber was warned that drawing the Sword of Selection would lead to a tragic fate. The motivation for accepting it was the happiness of the people: protecting their smiles seemed worth the cost. Britain's destruction later became the source of a wish to redo the selection of its king 79 87 255.

Proto Saber initially believed that Britain could be saved only if someone else had drawn the sword. His confrontation with Lancelot and subsequent discussions with Roland forced him to consider the people living after Britain's fall, whose existence would also be affected by rewriting history. He ultimately abandoned the idea of weighing those lives against his homeland and embraced the simpler duty of a guardian 80 87 107.

The later female Saber likewise carries memories of Britain's collapse and a previous Holy Grail War. Kama exploits those memories to turn her self-denial into a ruthless willingness to sacrifice anything—including herself—for Britain's happiness 248 255.

Appearance

Proto Saber

• Wears silver-white armor woven from magical energy; he can manifest it almost immediately when danger arises 42.
• Frequently has a warm, sunlight-like smile, which disappears when he recognizes the otherworldly Lancelot 75.
• Usually conceals his Sacred Sword beneath Invisible Air 74.

Artoria and Artoria Alter

• Artoria is described as a blonde girl and normally wears a blue gown with her combat equipment 255.
• Inversion turns her clothing black and spreads crimson-streaked darkness across the Sacred Sword 255.
• Alter has cold golden eyes with vertical, dragon-like pupils 255.
• Her altered armor is heavier and bears scarlet magical patterns 263.

Personality

Proto Saber

Proto Saber combines genuine kindness with a sharply defined distinction between good and evil. He is honest and protective toward those under his care, but accepts cruelty toward evil enemies and rejects chivalry that obstructs victory. He explicitly regards rational sacrifices as necessary in war 50.

His deepest failing is excessive responsibility for Britain's destruction. He initially blames himself rather than Lancelot and sees his own kingship as something that should be erased. Roland's criticism helps him recover the original purpose behind his rule: protecting people's present happiness rather than preserving Britain as an end in itself 75 79 87.

By his departure, he refuses to condemn Roland for disasters that have not happened. He accepts the role of guardian without claiming the right to judge every possible future 107.

Artoria

Artoria is loyal to a Master who treats her as a companion. Rin's respect, abundant support, and willingness to return Avalon make Saber particularly determined to repay her with victory. Her first defeat nevertheless leaves her discouraged and unable to enjoy Rin's proposed outing 255.

Her chivalry is stricter than Proto Saber's pragmatic approach. Even though Scáthach's intervention saves her from Karna, she condemns the ambush for disrupting their duel and taking the victor's reward 251.

Artoria Alter

Inversion exposes rather than erases Artoria's underlying convictions. She retains her reason, but adopts the belief that any sacrifice is permissible if it ultimately saves Britain. Her own life is included in that calculation 255 263.

Kama's influence does not displace that priority. When their interests finally diverge, Alter chooses her country and a future opportunity over devotion to Kama 274.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

• Both incarnations use battlefield-honed swordsmanship backed by exceptional physical attributes and magical output 79 248.
• Proto Saber can contend evenly with Lancelot through his class advantages and rapid recovery, though he acknowledges Lancelot's superior close-combat technique 79.
• Artoria's technique exceeds ordinary human limits, but Karna's control of distance and weapon handling still surpass it 265.

Mana Burst

Concentrates magical energy into explosive movement and attacks.

• Allows rapid charges, heavy sword strikes, and wind-assisted movement through the air 45 98 248.
• Proto Saber has no flight skill; his aerial combat depends on repeated wind-powered bursts and sufficient magical energy 98.
• Sustained use places a substantial burden on the Master, making Rin's support a major improvement for Artoria 248.
• Artoria cannot initially match Karna's precise control over concentrated Mana Burst 249.

Red Dragon Heart and Dragon Factor

The dragon heart functions as a Mana Furnace Core.

• Circulates immense magical energy through Saber's body and supports powerful defensive releases 73.

• In Alter, the dragon factor is expressed more fully, improving physical performance, output, and self-healing 263.

Invisible Air and Wind King Hammer

• Invisible Air: C-rank wind concealment that hides the sword's dimensions and gives Proto Saber an opening advantage 74.
• Its concealment fails against Lancelot, who already knows the sword's length and Saber's fighting style 74.
• Wind King Hammer: Releases a violent wind attack. Proto Saber uses it to engulf and overturn Iskandar's chariot 45.

Instinct

• Warns Saber of hidden danger, hostile attacks, and potentially fatal situations 73 249 251.
• Artoria's intuition helps her react to Scáthach's unexpected spear attack while she is already recovering from Karna's counter 251.
• Inversion lowers its rank. Alter remains dangerous, but loses some of the perception and possibility for miraculous reversals associated with her original state 263.
• It is not absolute: Roland can move beyond its ability to track his sword 264.

Magic Resistance

• Artoria possesses A-ranked Magic Resistance, allowing her to endure the heat surrounding Karna during her close-range attack 249.
• She expects a single straightforward Command Spell to struggle to restrain her. Kama instead targets her concealed feelings and memories, successfully destabilizing her mind 255.

Excalibur and the Sacred Sword

A Divine Construct forged in the Inner Sea of the Planet, converting its wielder's magical energy into destructive light 41 263.

• Proto Saber's sword has thirteen restraints whose release depends on the circumstances of battle 99.
• Its approvals include fighting a stronger opponent, opposing evil, avoiding selfish desire, and fighting to save the world 99.
• Its radiance destroys Gilgamesh's flood and later overwhelms Angra Mainyu's monstrous body 99 101 107.
• Proto Saber is also associated with Beast Slayer and the duty to confront world-destroying calamities 41 105 107.

Excalibur Morgan

The inverted Sacred Sword wielded by Artoria Alter.

• Retains the sword's energy-conversion function, but releases destructive darkness without Artoria's former restraint 263.
• Can produce magical-light slashes without invoking its true name 263.
• Its fully released Noble Phantasm is described as exceeding Karna's in rank, but its force can also severely damage Alter when turned against her during Roland's test 264.
• The altered form sacrifices access to the original Sword of the Star's miracle-producing potential for greater practical output in ordinary combat 263.

• Kiritsugu Emiya — Original Master. Kiritsugu keeps his distance to avoid conflict over his assassination-based methods; Saber initially interprets this as distrust 24.
• Irisviel von Einzbern — Initially his acting Master, then his contracted Master after Kiritsugu's death. Their partnership rests on mutual respect, and her support significantly improves his abilities 24 33 44 50.
• Roland — Final Master. Engineers his confrontation with Lancelot, saves him from Gilgamesh, and challenges his wish to rewrite Britain's history. Saber leaves with gratitude but promises to oppose him if he threatens the world 75 80 87 107.
• Lancelot — Knight from another world. Their duel exposes Saber's guilt; Lancelot ultimately redirects his own killing blow and lets Saber pierce his Spirit Core 75 79 80.
• Mei Li — Teacher who warned him of Britain's fate and his duty as a guardian. Her imprint voices the Sacred Sword's approvals 45 87 99 107.

Artoria

• Rin Tohsaka — Master and valued companion. Artoria appreciates her support and immediately attacks Kama after discovering Rin has been subdued and their Contract taken 248 255.
• Kama — Usurps Rin's Contract and creates Artoria Alter. Despite the love binding her, Saber ultimately stabs Kama through the heart because her country matters more 255 274.
• Roland — Initially takes Rin hostage, later defeats and tests Alter. His revelation about the Grail leads her to abandon the current war and accept a future opportunity 252 264 265.
• Karna — Overwhelming opponent during her opening battle. After inversion, she becomes capable of meeting him on comparable terms 249 265 271.
• Scáthach — Rival whose ambush offends her chivalry. Scáthach acknowledges the courage required to face one's own weaknesses 251.
